Help with LaCie eSata Thunderbolt Hub
I have a couple of Icy Dock 4-bay drive enclosures. At the moment one is set up with a JBOD configuration, and the other is set up as two mirrored RAID sets, each 3TB.
The Icy Dock enclosures support both USB and eSATA. When LaCie came out with their eSata/Thunderbolt hub I thought, "Awesome. I'll get one of those babies and connect the drives that way. It will be faster than USB, etc."
So last Friday my LaCie eSata Thunderbolt hub was delivered and I proceeded to hook the two Icy Docks up via eSata. I can't get things to work, though. Both drives, which work just fine over USB, don't even seem to want to appear on my iMac. On the occasions when they do, the iMac only "sees" one of the 4 JBOD drives, for instance...
What am I doing wrong here? Is there something obvious I'm missing? Do the drives need to be formatted in a particular way? Is there a driver my iMac needs to work with them?
Really hoping you can help because I'd love to take full advantage of the eSata speeds...
Thanks in advance!
Eurika!!!!! I switched the THUNDERBOLT ports in the iMac and BINGO! So it would appear that the Ports had to be HARD-RESET on the MAC after resetting the PRAM.

Need help with LaCie d2 and back-ups
I have a new MacBook running 10.4.9 and a Flat Panel iMac running 10.3.9 and 9.2.2 (for a couple of old games). Today I updated my LaCie firmware with the hopes of backing up my MacBook. The 120 GB LaCie has 4 partitions, 1 empty, 2 with 10.3.9 backups and one with a 9.2.2 backup. My plan was to erase the LaCie and repartition so that I would have 3 partitions: one for 10.4.9, one for 10.3.9 and one for 9.2.2. My flatpanel recognizes the LaCie volumes as bootable (they show up when I start while holding down the option key and I can see them in System Preferenes as start-up disks). My MacBook mounts the LaCie volumes, I can see them in disk utitility but they do not show up when I hold down the option key nor can I see them in System Preferences as start up disks. Is this normal? Will my 3 partition plan work? In order to backup my MacBook would I just need to start up from the Tiger CD and then use disk utility to clone a copy? I have read about SuperDuper and have it on my MacBook but I wouldn't be able to use that if booted from the CD, right?
As you can tell, I am a very BASIC Mac user, so please talk down to me. I am NERVOUS about wiping my LaCie--like working without a net! I also want to repartition my flat panel to 2 partitions rather than 3, if I ever get this figured out.
TIA for your patience and help.
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9) iMac Flat Panel and LaCie d2
iMac Flat PanelJust a couple of things. A bootable OS needs to be installed on a volume/partition before it appears in Startup Disk. Additinally, you'll need to partition the LaCie with the MacBook, since Panther's Disk Utility doesn't know anything about the required GUID partition map scheme. Finally, note that Panther and OS 9 can't use the GUID scheme. The See my post at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4511447 for details.

XSan with LaCie eSATA drives?
I have a client interested in XSan for video editing (36-node Mac lab). They have funds for the fibre cards and XSan software, but have existing drives they'd like to continue using. I fear the cost of new storage will break the budget and kill the project.
The drives are LaCie's Biggest S2S drives. The drive units are five SATA drives in one eSATA RAID-0 case, connected to a LaCie-provided eSATA card. They have four of these units, 2.5TB each, for 10TB total. Each case is its own independent volume. They're on a MacPro server, currently on 10.4 Server but a 10.5 upgrade is planned.
My question is obvious - can they use these existing drives (obviously connected through the host MacPro) and still take advantage of XSan? The most critical need is network throughput, which can't keep up over their ethernet LAN. Pooling would be nice, but currently not critical.
Thanks! In Xsan (or in any kind of "SAN"), storage is not "hosted" by a central machine and "shared" to a network. The proper term for that is "NAS." It's confusing, no worries.
All SAN nodes must be able to see the storage device via SCSI protocol. In XSAN (or in "file-level" SANs), you do have central servers that act as a sort of "traffic cop" for the shared volume, but it is a completely different concept from "hosting storage."
I do not believe there are any products out there that can take multiple eSATA devices, RAID them together, and then present itself to a fibre channel network as a LUN.
If there is such a product, I am not familiar with it.
XSAN is a very complicated (and expensive) product and should not be undertaken lightly, especially for a 36-node lab. You should not even consider using XSAN for this many nodes unless you can afford to do it correctly. (Multiple XServes as MetaData Controllers, true fibre channel RAIDs, good fibre switches, complete backup system, etc.)
Sorry.

Need help with Lacie Big Extreme that won't mount
OK Guys,
My buddy's Lacie 1TB Big Extreme won't mount to any computer we try. The blue light is flashing. We have tried different cables on different computers. After a web search for similar problems we found out several people had success just plugging in a new power supply. So, we ordered one. Didn't work.
I can hear the drive spinning up. Oh, I guess I should mention this unit is out of warranty.
Here's my question. After some research, I found out this drive has 2 hard drives inside and set up as Raid 0. This is the way Lacie sets these up for use right out of the box. So if I take the Lacie enclosure apart and try to mount the drives separately in another generic enclosure what will I see in terms of the files written on a single drive (assuming it mounts) since I am dealing with an initial Raid 0 set-up? My intention is to save the files. Please help.Same problem with an external LaCie Little Big Disk = does not mount, but shows up under FireWire in System Profiler. I assume it's a OS X issue, because I ran a software "Data Rescue II" and this software has recognized the disk.
Has probably something to do with one of the latest OS X updates, because I've used this disk with Time Machine now more than a year and never had a problem.
I recommend not to experiment with partitioning/reformatting (if you care about the data on the disk) and push Apple for a solution. It assume it's some kind of an access problem. -
I'm trying to copy 50 gigs of data from 1 hd to another and it takes 30 hours. But if I try coping the same data over my network from 1 computer to the next. it moves faster....
This involve all firewire 800 lacie drives...
Any ideas?
ThanksIf you put the drive cable into the USB port, it will mount.... or it should anyway. Then when the icon is on your desktop, open Finder and you should see it there. Finder is almost like Windows Explorer (File Explorer). You should be able to browse the drive. You can select the folder(s) and copy them to the appropriate folders on your MBA drive.

Lacie 2big thunderbolt drive won't stay asleep
I am connecting a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt drive to a 15" Macbook Pro late 2013. When the computer sleeps, the drive spins down and then immediately spins back up again, on and on. The drive will not stay asleep, but constantly powers down and then back up, down and then back up, on and on. Ejecting the disk first has no effect. In an odd twist, if I connect the disk through the thunderbolt port on a lacie esata/thunderbolt adapter that has an esata drive also connected and powered on, then the disks will power down and stay down when the computer sleeps. If, however, there is not a powered on esata disk connected to the hub, then the lacie thunderbolt drive will not stay asleep.
I contacted Lacie technical support and they replied "The automatic shut-off feature is based off the drive detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port. If your computer, even when powered off, keeps a little current running through, the drive may not know it is supposed to shut off or on. "
Has anybody else had this problem or connected this drive and had it work properly?I have two of the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt devices (I hesitate to call them 'drives' because each device has two disk drives in the enclosure) and when I put my MBP to sleep (which is seldom) the drives 'sleep' (no spinning sounds).
I'm not sure why your device would be "detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port" - unless that's something new in the Retina machines (which I don't have!).
If I were you, I would work your way up the tech chain of command at LaCie - I've owned their drives for decades and have always had good luck with their technical support, even if I had to notch it up a bit to get satisfactory results.
Good luck,
Clinton -
i am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??
You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

Any experience with LaCie Thunderbolt drive?
LaCie's thunderbolt drive is getting reasonably good reviews on the Apple store -- http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/H7150ZM/A.
Good, save for the fan noise. It sounds like in some units, for some people, it's intolerable.
Anyone here have experience with it? I'm considering it as my primary video editing drive.1 TB, 7200. Only have 3-weeks experience but no problems so far. Huge improvement in FCP X performance. Attributed most of my problems with lock-up, dropped frames, beachball, etc. to disk drives. FCP X simply won't work reliably with USB, FW400 on my system. FW800 (pure) is okay. TBolt is better choice. LaCie has 2 drives inside metal case - significantly more drive noise than my WD FW800. Not a major issue for me but could be problematic if you're trying to record naratives while editing.

I try to backup my Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt with my Time Capsule but the Lacie is not active (grey) in the Time Machine preferences. Why ?

Thunderbolt hub with dvi-d dual-link, daisy chain that isn't too expensive?
I've been following a number of thunderbolt hub progress for 2 years now, and STILL can't find one that I need.
UTTERLY MUST HAVE dual dvi. This means a minimum resolution of 2560x1440, which is what my current 27" IPS monitor does.
UTTERLY MUST HAVE gigabit ethernet. Wireless N does not cut it.
Really nice to have a daisy chain so I can hook it to my thunderbolt external drive, but not critical.
NICE TO HAVE a power out so I can power my MBA from it, e.g. have two cords - thunderbolt + power, so I don't have to carry a spare power adaptor to the office.
Basically what I've been seeing is either DVI single, or hdmi, or no daisy chain, or no video at all.
Here's things I've looked at that DON'T cut it:
http://www.newmagic.com.au/products/Matrox/Editing.asp#fragment-6
http://www.belkin.com/us/support-article?rnId=8415
http://www.caldigit.com/thunderboltstation/index-ee.html
Oh, and just to pre-empt the guy who who inevitably suggest that I just buy a new apple display (as if they are worth throwaway money): NOT AN AFFORDABLE SOLUTION, please just move on.I don't believe that a product exists that meets all your requirements, though it's possible I've missed something. Probably the only way you'd get even the primary two requirements is to get an expansion chassis and add the appropriate PCI cards, and that's not going to be cheap.

Help with white screen and thunderbolt icon!
I have a new MBP. I was trying to transfer stuff from my iMac to the new MBP using a thunderbolt cable and pressing down the 'T' key while restarting my iMac.
Long story short, there was not enough room on my MBP so I just continued on without transferring anything. Disconnected the thunderbolt and my iMac is still on a white screen with a floating thunderbolt. How do I proceed?

Please help with my incessant spinning wheel of death!
I have almost always had the spinning circle of death… Almost the whole life of this late 2011 15" 4 GB mbp. I just can not easily use this computer anymore. It takes so long to do anything. I need to exit all apps but the one I am using to make it work. I have to restart is almost daily to make it do much. So frustrating! Please help!
I already tried a disk repair under disk utlility with no issues shown.
I read on another post to run an etrecheck app and to post that info. Here is what it says.

Help with a kernel panic?
Hi, all,
My new (two weeks old) Macbook pro has been randomly restarting, sometimes two or three times a day. I talked with Apple Support and they had me repair the disc permissions, which wound up being quite lendthy ... something like 147 pages in Word when I copied and pasted the report. I've not had one since, but I'm hoping to get this nipped in the bud as I'm a photographer and need to get this guy stable so I can start taking it on jobs with me. I'm not tech savy enough to understand a panic report, so can anyone help with this one:
