Help with Laptop buying decision

Ok I am a mass communications student in college and produce a tv show for the college tv station. I have a digital media technology certificate so I am not a total noob but video editing is a deep world and I don't pretend to know it all by any means. I use final cut studio currently in the tv station media labs for my show and projects. ( I want to expand to use more industry titles and not just stay with the familiar final cut) I have adobe cs4 after effects and premiere pro and while it is installed on my home desktop, any sort of rendering in after effects quickly makes it apparent that this computer is incapable of my needs. I am also learning to use blender and have a copy  so I am hoping to get into animation more heavily with the right computer. SO I would say my main programs to be running will be after effects, premiere pro, & blender. I am not a gamer at all, although it seems like gaming computers have the best specs. Ok so I am going to buy a computer and I need it to be a laptop because a) I will be using it for other student related tasks (i.e. note taking, paper writing, etc.) and b) often times it will be necessary to take it to my student job (lots of free time as I wait for people to check out equipment from the tv station lab), as well as take it to other campus locations and work on the go MY budget is about $1500. Not a hard budget but can't go crazy here. ( no suggestions over $2000) I am looking for suggestions. Up for anything. I am assuming through cursory examinations through google that an i7 quad core is gonna be a duh. I have had mac envy for the rich kids with macbook pros for a long time and I am familiar with final cut studio a great deal however it seems like my budget is going to go a lot farther in pc world than mac world. Yet I am up for all suggestions.  Obviously lotsa ram, quad core, hdd space (or multiple hd) , nice GPU card, firwire, (and I do love bells and whistles). Huge screen would be conveniant while working, yet inconveniant while walking around campus. (so that could go either way) No preference on brand and such but prefer something reliable to carry me into grad school. I am also interested in external peripheals to make my video editing workflow efficient (external drives, capture cards, etc.) that any one thinks are must haves or something. Until now I have always used school equipment and I am ready to get setup on my own. So if its laptop "a" with external thingy "b" or some configuration like that you suggest I am up for it! Beyond that I am confused. Here are links to couple of models I have been eyeing:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834157043 Not the best reviews but affordable from my local staples(1,000)
http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g73jha2-order-p-2761.html I think this is impressive. Duel HDDSs, 8gb ram, nice attractive deign, apparantly great graphics gpu....I guess this puppy is in the lead so far but for some reason no firewire????
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?poid=460942 interesting laptop and like the included ssd but a little 2 expensive and 18" screen...this is one big "laptop" but seems powerful
http://store.apple.com/us/configure/...co=MTM3NDcyODk ok so this one comes in about right with price and I have had mac envy forever but only 2 cores? only 4gb of ram? only 5400rpm hd thats only 250gb? It seems hard to justify the money when you see the specs of other computers in the pc world
So I am up for any suggestions, any brands, any components I must include in my hunt (i.e. certain video card or something) custom or namebrand, etc. I have a couple of weeks to shop so i want to be sure I get THE ONE (and I have no plans to upgrade to cs5 any time btw so something meshing nicely with cs4 after effects and premiere pro but capable of animation as well) Ok please HELP me

> Obviously lotsa ram, quad core, hdd space (or multiple hd)...
Yes.
> ... nice GPU
card,
No.
As far as After Effects is concerned, a "nice GPU card" is a waste of money. Having basic OpenGL 2.0 capabilities is all that you need (actually, you don't even _need_ that), and nothing above the baseline is at all important.
Spend the money on RAM, CPU, and hard disk resources.
And be sure to get a 64-bit operating system.

  • Help with a buying decision?

Hello everyone. My wife is considering buying a Mac laptop for her architecture grad school work. She will be using Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop and Indesign). I've customized a 14" iBook on the Apple store that matches a customized 15" Powerbook in almost every detail (1.42 Ghz to 1.5Ghz G4, 1gig DDR333, 100GB HD, 8x Superdrive, OS 10.4, Airport Extreme) for about $800 less than the Powerbook!
So far this is a no brainer, but the iBook only offers a 32Mb video card, while the Powerbook comes with a 64Mb card as standard. Given the graphics programs my wife will be working with, what impact would the lesser graphics card have on her productivity, if any? I'm not sure how much these programs rely on VRAM. She's not a gamer (I wish), so that won't be an issue. Thanks for any advice!

    Hi, Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First thing: 2-3 years ago I switched to Apple and now I have to admit that was one of the most beautiful and clever things I ever done in my life.
I think you were just unlucky with Apple products but I suggest you to buy a Mac because they produce great computers and Mac OS is the best OS ever! I know that you could be not sure to buy another Mac but remember that in a PC you'll find less system performances and more difficulties and troubles (settings, spyware...). If you want to buy a notebook I suggest you the iBook because it's a complete computer and you can use it for common tasks and some pro applications. If you're looking for a desktop, take a look at the new iMac... I think it's the best buy (specs - $).

  • Please help with a buying decision

I'm a new Mac user. Two things happened in the past few months that is turning me off to Apple, but I'm still ambivalent.
    1. I bought when they were running a promotion for rebates on the ipod and a printer. So two days after I got these items, my 2 year old niece was diagnosed wtih cancer and rebates were the last thing on my mind. So 10 days after the rebate date, I wrote a letter and put in all the paperwork and asked if they could kindly extend the date as I wouldn't have bought the other items without the rebate. But they didn't and I thought that was pretty intolerant.
    2. I bought an ibook g4 14.1 in August 2005. I was using it under normal and careful use--slowly sliding it into a shelf and it wasn't all the way closed and hit the shelf and the lcd cracked in a spot in the corner, leaking and spreading.
I understand Apple won't cover screens, but I'm pretty angry because the iBook is advertised as being "built to make an impact and take an impact" yet the screen broke so easily. So I did the best I could with what I had, took the loss, and sold it for parts.
So I'm torn--do I go back to the dark side (PC's) or are there compelling reasons I should continue to be a Mac user. Part of me wants to be convinced to stay with Apple because I hear such great things about them, but these two experiences make me feel like I'm a fool to continue buying their products.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

  • Need help with Laptop decision

I am sorry about the length of this post, but I really need help. I am trying to buy a laptop and what should be a really exciting prospect (buying my first laptop) is turning into a nightmare that just about had me in tears over the weekend.
My budget is not big - 600 absolute max, but would prefer to spend a bit less than this.
I do mainly office work (Word, Excel, Databases and PowerPoint) and also some Photoshop work. I also play a strategy game called Caesar 3. I very much want to load my copy of XP on the machine, either replacing Vista or as a partition.
Looking through the models available in my price range and looking up the benchmarks I have found the following:
Most have processors like the Intel T5250 or T5450 or the AMD TL 58, which are all benchmarked as ok, but not great. A few have the AMD TL 60, which is a bit better and one or two have the Intel T7200 which is even better.
On the bulk of the machines the graphics cards are either the ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 or the Intel GMA X3100. Both of these are benchmarked as not great and the review says that they cannot handle strategy games. A few of the models have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 or HD 2400XT and one or two have the HD 2600.
The problem is that the models that have the better processor have the lower rated graphics card and those that have both don't have XP drivers, as far as I can see.
Don't mind a 15.4'' screen (although the 17.1'' would be very nice to have) and would like a reasonably big hard drive (160 +). I will be getting 2GB of RAM.
I am at my wits end. I don't want to buy a computer that will end up taking a minute or more to refresh a screen when you have more than two things open, or that you have to keep rebooting to get it to work. I want to be able to play my one and only game (Caesar III) which is a strategy game and I want to be able to work in Photoshop and perhaps have one or two other things open at the same time, like a website perhaps.
Please help me, anyone. Am I asking for the impossible? I can't get hold of an email address for Toshiba to try to get clarity from them on the issue of drivers and whether they will be made available in the future.
Then there is of course the retailer issue as each retailer only stocks a limited number of models and one has to choose between those.
I hope someone can help me!!

    Hi
The problem is that you want to buy an all-round notebook but dont want to spend much money.
Additionally you want to change the OS to XP and need the XP drivers.
Well this is very hard decision buddy ;)
A notebook for gaming equipped with the power full graphic card cost a little bit more as 600
So you have to take a decision; Do you want to buy an gaming notebook and spend more as 600 or you will take an notebook which is great for a common usage like DVD watching, working with Office software, etc
The Cesar game is not known to me but I presume it doesnt need a high performance graphic card and it should run on a normal notebook too.
I think a Satellite a200 is not bad choice for you because some A200 notebooks were delivered with the Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor and a NVIDIA GeForce graphic card.
And very important is that all XP drivers were already released ;)

  • Need help fast with a buying decision - Leadtek 6800 GT

Hi there, I have the opportunity to swap my Club 3D 6800 GT for a Leadtek 6800 GT. The reasons I would do this would be the cooling and the games bundle.
I just wanted to know if anyone knows how the cooling is on this particular card and if it would be better than the reference design?
My other concern is that it has a huge copper heatsink on the back of the card, this would sit directly under the CPU HSF. There really would only be a few millimeters between them and due to the position of the socket on this board, the heat sink fins go up vertically. Would the heat from the card's copper heat sink rise up into the CPU HSF grooves and raise the temperature of the CPU?
    Thanks for any help
I kind of need help fast as someone said they were gonna buy my other card of ebay today, there's still time to stop them if this is gonna be a bad idea

i would definately take the leadtek one over the club3d card, the cards themselves are all based on refrence designs just different cooling solutions and bundles
and the cooler on the leadtek is a lot better, and it isnt more noisy then the club3d one at all
it has better cooling, and they seem to be the ones which are the most available, and they overclock very well due to the better cooling

  • Need help with laptop that won't start up

I have a Toshiba c655 laptop that had some viruses on it; *thought* I'd fixed it and all was well.  When I turned off and re-started the computer, the screen showed "Toshiba Innovations", and at the bottom the options of pressing F2 for startup or F12 for boot manager...this screen is quickly replaced by a black screen with a white cursor in the top left hand corner.  When I hit F2 or F12 and go to those screens, I'm not computer savvy enough to know what options (if any) I should choose that might help me to get this thing started....seems nothing happens with any of the buttons I push.  The scenario I just described is the only thing this computer will do now.  Any help?  Thank you so much!

it sounds like missing system/boot  files on hdd
    1. try to press f2 during toshiba screen to go in bios and load default settings.
    2. press f12 and select boot from cd if you have system rapair disk...or any live cd to backup your files
    3. the last option ... press 0 on toshiba screen for system recovery...this will delete all information
    sorry for my english

  • Help with laptop screen?

I am wondering if all I need to order is a new laptop screen or if I will need anything else replaced. I'm not sure what all comes when you order a new laptop screen like if its just the outer glass or full screen assembly. I will try to give as much detail as I can. I was also wondering if anyone knows of a good site for screens that has a good reputation and pricing?
I have a Lenovo B570 Model: 1068-AFU Laptop. My son was using it and he closed the screen with a pencil (or something) laying on the keyboard. He then decided to lay his book(s) on top of it. When he opened it the next day and turned it on the screen was all messed up. The glass itself about 2" from the bottom of the screen up against the left side is a small crack that spider webs out about 1-2 inches. Around the crack the screen is black with a purple line surrounding it. Most of the upper left of the screen is white with multicolored vertical lines, the rest of the screen you can see the login screen but has horizontal lines and the whole screen is flickering like crazy. I can still move the cursor around but can only see it in the top right ⅓ of the screen where the only change is the flickering.
    Solved!

    hi DreadSpawn,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Based on your description, You just have to replace the LCD Screen,
This link should get you going, Screen from resellers don't come together with the covers. So I would suggest to examine the LCD covers on your computer see if it took damage as well, Normally If the Plastics were damage the LCD Itself will move while still attached to the covers.
You can Check this Hardware Maintenance Manual about Checking and replacing parts on your B570.
Just be extracareful in replacing parts, If you can have a Local Tech replace it then that's OK.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers!

  • Need help with laptop recommendation

my current laptop is a dell d800, intel pentium "M" 2.0 ghz single processor. 2 gigs of RAM. nvidia ge force fx go 5650 video card, firewire card. xp professional, 17 inch screen. still running pp2 on it, but cs3 at home on desktop.
i shoot and edit in hd with a sony hvr v1u. the above laptop takes 45 minutes to export a 90 second clip to a flash video file, for example. and the image stutters and lags during playback.
i assume the main issue with current laptop is processor speed. i'm looking to buy a new laptop and would like recommendations as to what to buy. my company seems to buy from dell exclusively. i also am assuming we ought to revert to xp on the new laptop.
    thanks,

I've been very happy with my Sager notebook. Got the recs. for it here. Now, most heavy work is still done on my workstation, but the laptop is quite fast and stout. Have a look at:
    http://www.sagernotebook.com/product_customed.php?pid=29175&action=customize
I went with the 3x 200GB SATA HDDs, and often use FW-800 externals. Not a cheap laptop, but I could also get it with XP, just by asking.
So far, the unit has been great, and what little tech support/serice, that I've needed, has been quick, professional and easy. I'm a happy camper with this unit, hence my rec.

  • Help with Laptop

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite and my CD/DVD ROM drive no longer works. I bought this laptop about 2 years ago. I wanted to know what could I do to fix this issue?
The numbers on the botttom on my lpatop are as follows:
    TOSHIBA SATELITTE A205-S5804 SYSTEM UNIT
    MODEL NO SPAF3C-0NR00V
I was trying to reinstall the recovery disk, but my drive is not reading it al all. I bought an external DVD to try and boot Vista through the external device. I used a separate desktop to give power to the external drive, while plugging the USB part into my laptop.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

OK, well, I have a rather long, complicated, and drawn out idea.
    You'll need:
A computer running Windows that is connected to the internet.
A flash drive (1 GB or greater capacity) that you don't mind formatting
(optional) another external hard drive or flash drive to back data up with
    Go to
    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
and download the Windows version of Unetbootin
Now, plug your flash drive in, go to My Computer, right-click on the drive and click format. Format it to the FAT file system.
You probably want to remove any other non-critical pieces of external memory (again, this isn't essential)
    Now, run Unetbootin.
In the Unetbootin window, there a way to select a distrebution of linux to download. I'd recommend Ubuntu.
Next, select the letter of your flash drive at the bottom of the window and click Start.
I'm writing this from memory, so you might have to do something else. But Unetbootin is REALLY simple to figure out.
Unetbootin will download the Unbuntu operating system and install it onto your flash drive. The download is about 700 MB, so this will probably take hours and render your internet connection nearly useless.
Once, Unetbootin has finished (I think it asks you to restart your system), eject the flash drive and plug it into your troublesome laptop.
You probably know how to edit the BIOS settings by now (if you don't, then you can keep reading, learn to edit them, and just boot off the recovery disk w/o the whole Ubuntu/Linux thing).
TO edit your BIOS settings, hit the key to enter the BIOS menu (F2 on must computers) repeatedly after pressing to power button to turn the computer on.
ONce in the BIOS menu, you have to navigate to the Boot Sequence page and move the USB (or Disk Drive option if you're trying to boot off the internal disk drive) option to the top of the list. Play with this list. You can't really screw it up beyond repair (just change it back if it doesn't work).
Save and exit the BIOS (usually by hitting F10)
Now, your computer will start off the flash drive (no changes are made to your computer). If you're prompted to, select the option of Booting without changing any settings (usually the default).
After about fifteen minutes, you should have the Ubuntu desktop running. You can put a disk into either your internal disk drive or your external one and see if it registers. If it does, then your reinstall disks could be bad or you could have some other problem.
You can use the linux disk to pull any files on your hard drive to a second flash drive by going to the places menu and opening your hard drive and a second flash drive that you've plugged in previously.
If all else fails and you like linux, you can install it to the hard drive so that it'll run at full speed. You might want to make sure that the sound works and that you can connect to a wireless network. There is a little icon on the top bar that you click on to see the wireless networks available.
I used linux for a couple of years without too many complaints. You're kind of at the "nothing to loose" point with your OS, so you could give it a shot. Just remember, its a different OS and will take a few days to learn. Don't get mad at it. There are some awesome forums avalable (google Ubuntu forums) if things get too bad.

  • Help with a tough decision Apple is forcing me to make.

    Hi everyone,
So, like many of you, I have been patiently waiting for about five months now for a Mac Pro refresh. With the newer cpu's, gpu's, and hds out now, I was expecting to have seen them update it by now, but they haven't. They also refuse to announce anything about when they might, in a greedy attempt to get people to pay top dollar for old stock. I need to get a new system for 4k video editing now. When it was first released I was impressed by the value. Building a comparable system cost about the same. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore, and since they haven't upgraded the system, or lowered their prices to compete, I feel like I need to abandon the dream and look else where.  Anybody disagree? Is there any reason why the Mac Pro still can compete at a $5,000 price point? If not, any recommendations on what I should get?

It is easy to start with as 4,1 $495 and have 4k and even 5k.

  • Need Help with Laptops and Internet Access

I have been having difficulties during the past week with my internet access.  I had been using FIOS for a couple months with few problems.  Initially, I thought the problem was related to thunderstorms that passed thru our area a week ago, and wondered if the router had been damaged during the storms.  But now I suspect it may be a more pedestrian issue with the computers' settings.
I have the Actiontec M1424WR router.  With the power on, the power, internet, coax, and wireless lights are glowing and green.  I have tried rebooting the router, and have used the various "fix my connection" and optimizer tools available from online support here.
We have 4 PCs in the home, all with wireless adapters.  Two are desktop PCs, the other two are an HP (XP) and a Dell (Vista) laptop.  I am generally able to get internet access on the desktop PCs, since these have linksys wireless adapters with the linksys utilitiy installed, and I have a profile created in the linksys utility that usually works fine with the desktop units.
But there is no such utility for the laptop units with their built-in adapters, and I must use Windows services to connect to the network and the internet.  I can sometimes find available networks with the Windows services, and connect to the network manually.   But many times, the SSID for our network will not be listed as avaialble, and at other times, the Windows service says that I have a network connection, but it will not connect to the Internet.  And even when connections are made, they will intermittently be dropped.
Is there anything I can do to make the network and internet access for these laptops once again reliable?
    Thanks,
    Rich

Thunderstorms knocked out power, and your router reverted to it's original setting ("automatic channel selection").
Now you have intermittent connectivity due to the change in configuration.
When you go into your router to change the channel, check to see if there is an option to "keep current channel settings after power cycle".  If so, check that box.

  • Dad needs help with laptop out of hard disk space

You Ipod users willh have to excuse me but I need some help. Bought my daughter an 30gb for xmas and one by one we are getting thru the problems. She nows has 1100 songs on it but I had to send her my laptop as it would not talk to her p3. Anyway her hard disk is now full on the laptop. Question is do you have to keep all in library to keep it on the ipod cos she cant get more song on? Can she delete anything from the laptop as I think she is going for the full 7,500 songs on her IPOD Thanks people

Use the instructions in this article to set the iPod to sync manually, and then delete the songs from the iTunes library; they will not automatically be deleted from the iPod.
