Help with Layers

Hi,
I need some help with Layers? Here is a link to a simple page
layout with 1 blue table, and 1 small green box. Both have a
capital "I" on the left. The table was aligned to "center" in DW.
http://sfrcreations.com/tbe.html
When I built this page at home, on my tiny 12" monitor, the
letters lined up over each other. When I look at it on larger
monitors, they no longer line up. I did have a suspicion that this
would happen due to my lack of knowledge of layers. So, my question
is. How does one, with a centered table, get a layer to always
appear where the designer wants it to no matter what the browser
size is. For instance if you move the browser to different sizes,
the blue box follows, but the layer stays where it is?
Are the menus on this forum site and the Adobe site in
general done by using layers? I ask, because if so, this site is
centered, and the layers seem to adjust to any browser size.
By the way, I am using Dreamweaver 8.
Thanks for any help!

8). I'm a shameless thief.

  • Photoshop elements 4  HELP with layers with layers

hello all I got photoshop elements 4 not to long ago and ive been playing with it but i just cant seem to grasp how to use layers.I would really appreciate any help anyone can suggest. Is there anywhere i can watch someone use layers? That would really help if i could see it being done. I bought the missing manual book and it seems really good, but i still dont understand layers. Thanks for any help.

    Charles
As a start you can try the imbedded help that comes with the program. Use the "help" box in the top right hand corner and type in layer. Then follow the links in each section. I'm using pse3, one version prior to yours. I have been using the program on and off for a year and I find that only just now I'm starting to use layers more often. I also on occasion "Google" photoshop elements "layers" which will take you to many sites where you can read more. It's an exhaustive topic and one that I find comes more easily as I use it.
Also use the adobe search engine at this site and type in "layers". You can read up on what other people have learned in the various threads.
I also have the Missing Manual and two other books. I find they are good but seem even better after you work away at various photos. Nothing like hands on. Just remember to keep an original of your file.
    cheers

  • Help with layers/blur

I have PSE 7, and have previously and sucessfully used the gaussian blur filter to blur the background of a photo. I followed the pse tutorial instructions to the letter, and had no problems. NOW, when I do the exact same steps, the blur occurs on my original photo. When I hilight the layer mask, use the brush to "unblur" the image, it shows the black marks on the mask, but nothing happens to the photo! It never gets clear.
I must have done something, but I have no idea what.  Please don't tell me to do it another way, I NEED to know why this worked before and isn't now.
    Thanks!

I opened a photo, made a duplicate copy (or layer..ctrl-j), with layer selected, chose gaussian blur. Blurred like 8.4 pxls, now, for some reason, my ORIGINAL photo has been blurred. I don't think that's supposed to happen! the lock is there, the eye is there. So then I make a layer mask, and with that highlighted, I used the brush to "unblur", but NOTHING HAPPENS!! waaa
I have done this sucessfully MANY times before, so I'm either missing a step, or I accidentally hit something I didn't know I did, and don't know how to undo it!
Yeah, nothing is going to happen via masking if both layers are blurred. Only the highlighted layer...the one you duplicated... should be blurred. There is a shortcut that applies the last filter that was applied without bringing up a dialog (Ctrl F on PC; I think it's Cmd F on the Mac). I doubt you would have highlighted the background layer then done that without realizing it.
Assuming you didn't hit Ctrl F, I'd recommend resetting your application preference file.
See step #5 "Preference File Gone Awry". There are instructions for both Windows and Mac.
    http://www.photokaboom.com/photography/learn/Photoshop_Elements/troubleshooting/1_troubles hooting.htm#Preference
Hopefully, you didn't close and save the blurred file with the original filename because that would overwrite your original. Then again not sure exactly how version sets work so if you did save it might still be in your Organizer.

  • I need help with layers!

I pulled up an image in PS CS3 to edit (Tiff file). I added a few designs using a couple of different brushes. And I also added text. It's for a birth announcement. Now, when I try to open it using iphoto (for a slideshow) OR when I try to open it with my Press Products (CPQ), it won't open! All of my images (that haven't been edited with brushes, etc.) appear. The images I have edited appear but I cannot click on them... their numbers, etc. are faded.
The only place I can open them is PS CS3! I have tried saving them every which way. One thing I've noticed is it says something like "File must be saved as a copy"... and then it has an exclamation mark beside the Layers box... but I CANNOT click on the layers box to 'save as a copy', etc...
What do I do? Help! I've never experienced this with CS2... on my PC. I have to have this birth announcement ready by this week!
    TIA,
    A*

Yea, I know I have a slideshow in bridge but I like the iphoto options, etc... My main problem is that I cannot open the pictures in my press products for ordering... or anywhere else. The only place I can open them is in PS CS3. I would like to do a slideshow too but my main thing is getting these images ordered. :D Thank you for your response! Have a great day. :D

  • Need immediate help with layers

    Hello.
Can someone please tell me how I get a selected background to  "go behind" the writing.
Its an elementary question, Im aware, but Ive been fiddling with this thing for ages and can't see a way out.
    Thanks
    L

What version of InDesign are you using? In CS5 and later it's pretty easy to arrange objects just by dragging them in the Layers panel (you may have to click a layer's triangle to expand it and expose all the objects it contains). Ther are also the commands in the Object > Arrange menus to send backward, forward to the back and to the front. These work only for th layer on which an object currently resides. Objects on other layers will remain above or below depending on the layer positon in the layer stack.
You may want to add a layer just for the your background objects, and once you've put the things on it that belong there you can lock it so they won't accidentally get selected.

  • Help with layers please!!

Hi! I just downloaded Elements 8, and purchased a pre-designed template for use in creating 1-inch circles that will be used in craft projects.  This template has multiple circles just waiting to be filled with images. Each circle has it's own layer. I am trying to add an image to a layer (which is the entire point of this), but it keeps creating new layers, and I can't see if the image I'm adding is positioned how I want. What can I do to make this easier? Even if it's not easy, how do I go about doing what I want with this?

Select your chosen layer in the layers pallet - so that it highlights.
Drag your image from the project bin into the main window.
Use the bounding box or corner handles to re-size and drag your image to the position you want.

  • Help with layering...I think (!)

    Hello!
I am very very new to Adobe Illustrator CS2 so please bear with me
I have been pushed in at the deep end at work with a whole rebranding project being thrust upon me as we have no internal design department to speak of. I started off using publisher to create the basic templates but am now having to use illustrator to create the logos and backgrounds for all the documents. Ahhhh!
Basically, I have our logo on illustrator. I have tried to colour it white (as I want to put it on a dark background) but everytime I try and do this the whole thing turns white!
    See below:
    Before
    After
    Can somebody please help me!
    Thank you so so much!
    Jess

    Jess,
To elaborate a bit on the answer in the first post:
You may create  a large rectangle (fill/nostroke), move it beneath the artwork,  possibly on its own layer, and give it the dark colour, then see.
To create the rectangle, you may click the Rectangle Tool (which looks like a rectangle) in the Toolbox, or just press the M key, then DoubleClick som ewhere on the Artboard and set the size and colour, move to suitable position.
To move it beneath everything else, you may Ctrl/Cmd+X to cut, then Ctrl/Cmd+B to have it reemerge.
You may use paler colours instead of white (and reversed gradients).
You may select the b in bradley, then use the dropdown Select>Same>Fill Color to have all the dark blue parts selected, then change to white or a paler blue.
You may select ENVIRONMENTAL and change its colour in the Appearance panel (click Fill) if it is done with colour change, or change its Opacity in the Transparency panel, or just leave it if the background colour is dark enough.
You may click the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) in the Toolbox, or just press the A key, then select each crescent shape and look at the Gradient panel to see the current colours and decide how to change them.

  • Help with layered objects

I am new to Pages and struggling to layer objects. I am working with opacity, but unable to move one object on top of another.
    thanks for any help,
    Kim

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Kim
When you insert any object in a Pages document & have it "fixed on page," by default wrap is turned on with a 12 point gutter. This results in objects "pushing" other objects out of the way. With your object(s) selected, go to the wrap inspector & uncheck "object causes wrap." Unfortunately, there is no way to change this default setting, it will have to be done manually for any object inserted. You may wish to leave feedback for the Pages team asking that the ability to have wrap apply to all objects or not be added as a preference in future versions of Pages.

  • Help with layering HTML over Flash?

I am using stylesheets to layer an html table over a flash element. The page renders properly in Safari but in IE, there are some display problems. The table cell bumps over to the right. Can anyone assist?
    http://www.kleewebdesign.com/hpcc/index2.html

Start by validation your page here:
    http://validator.w3.org/
It will tell you that you must declare a DOCTYPE, more info:
    http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_doctype.asp
Then learn how to use Z-indexing here:
    http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_pos_z-index.asp
You will also need to give the container <div>s declared positions:
    http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_positioning.asp
Here is example of Flash layered between 2 layers of HTML:

  • Please help with layers

Hi TOTALLY new to flash but ive just followed this tutorial
    Snow
I have added some of my own graphics to the above tutorial to
    suit my needs.
The problem I'm having is that the snow ALWAYS appears above
    all other graphics.
I want the 'snow' to be under all of the graphics except the
background. Obviously I've stacked them in the order I want but I
think there;s something in the actionscript overiding this.
Please can someone show me what do do and where - I am a
complete novice, but apart from this hickup my banners ready to go,
    Thanks
Here's the code if u dont want to visit the webpage for the
    snow....

What you can probably do is create an empty movieclip that
sits below all other layers and have all your snow code inside that
instead of on the main timeline. That way, the snow is added to the
movieclip instead of the stage itself.
I'm just curious because there's been alot of multiple posts
lately... when you posted, did you click the button three times
before it finally worked? The forums have been slow responding at
times and I'm wondering if people thinking it's not working are
    doing that.

  • Need help with show/hide and layers moving

I'm more of a designer, so I don't know code or CSS well at
all. I'm doing an online portfolio for a class and need help with
layers not staying in place in different browsers. The portfolio is
created with a table, but I wanted to use the show/hide function
for thumbnails of work. Are layers the only way you can use this
function? I read layers don't work well with tables, so how else
can I make it so when you mouse over a thumbnail, the larger image
    appears in another cell?

    > I don't know code or CSS well at all.
    That's unfortunate.
    > layers not staying in place in different browsers.
Layers don't move. But the rest of your page does.
Before you get too wrapped up in layers, though, please read
    this -
    http://www.great-web-sights.com/g_layerlaws.asp
They are not good when be used as a primary layout method.
    > I read layers don't work well with tables
They work fine with tables - but you have to understand both
    tables and
    layers to use them.
Why not show us your page, so we can see what you are
    struggling with?

  • Help with Moving Layers

I am working on the porfolio section of my web, and I am
using the "show hide" function with layers to rollover and show
larger image. The layer in dreamweaver moves when you resizing the
screen. Is there a way of fixing that?

These two links are not helping your cause -
    <link rel="stylesheet"
    href="file:///E|/webcentered/Templates/aboutus.css"
    type="text/css">
    <link rel="stylesheet"
    href="Artistic%20Media%20Graphic%20Design_files/aboutus.css"
    type="text/css">
The first one is broken, since it points to a file on your
    hard drive. The
second one is liable to break because you have used spaces in
    the
file/pathnames (which you should not do for the web).
The root of your problem is this -
    <td>
    <div id="sienna" style="position:absolute; width:242px;
    height:302px; z-index:1; left: 349px; top: 357px; visibility:

    src="Portfolio/images/sienna_04.jpg" width="245"
    height="309"></div>
You must never put absolutely positioned elements directly
    into table cells.

  • Help needed with layers stacking order

    Hi all
I have been using Photoshop for 5 years and feel confident in its use, however, and you may think this is a little strange, I have never understood stacking order.
I some how just fell into the habit of applyng a layer and flattening. Now i really want to get over this hurdle so that i can save important images unflattened for further re-adjustment later.
I have browsed the web for two days and found nothing that helps me. The crux of the issue is that i get to a point where i have applied maybe three adjustment layers and then aaply say a sharpening layer only to find i cannot see its effect on the image due to its order in the stack. This is what i reall need help with.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks
    Peter

The way I deal with issues like this is by toggling the "eye-cons" in the
layer palette to hide and show the various layers. In general, sharpening
should be done on the uppermost layer, but this can be problematic if you
have several layers, each with pixel data.
One technique that might interest you would be creating a sharpening layer.
For the simplest case, duping the original image, applying the high pass
filter, using the same radius you would for Unsharp Mask, and set the mode
to Overlay. I have this assigned to an action, attached to a function key.
Set the transparency to the amount (up to 100) that you would use for that
filter as well. If you need more sharpening, you can approximate this by
duping the sharpening layer. Use a layer mask and/or erase the sharpening
layer to control which areas are sharpened. Adjustment layers and other
changes can be applied either above or below the sharpening layer.
For more complex images, for example a group portrait with several layers
for the different people in the image, the sharpen layer needs to be
created by duping the entire image, flattening it, running high pass,
dragging the resulting layer onto your original image, and setting the mode
    to Overlay.
If you clone or otherwise change the objects in the image, the sharpen
    layer needs to be recreated.
