Help with Mac to PC

Hello,
I want to format my Macbook which (I assume) means I need to get everything off it and on to another computer temporarily. (If I don't have to then that would be awesome, can someone tell me how?)
Unfortunately for me, the only computer available is a lame PC. I've read guides and instructions galore but they either don't work, tell me to select some option that I don't seem to have or just confuse me.
If someone could tell me, simply, how to set it up so I can dump everything onto the PC I would be very appreciative.
I am running Tiger 10.4.11 (too poor to upgrade) and the PC has XP Pro with service pack 2. PC is ethernet to the modem and Mac is wireless via a router to the modem.

I think the majority (or maybe it's the vocal majority) would say you do not need to defragment the way you do on a PC. OSX does automatic defragmentation of files under 20MB. Read the articles below and decide for yourself but I think you will find that not many OSX owners have a defragmentation utility.

There is a difference between defragmentation and optimizing. Defrag. makes files occupy contiguous space, optimizing puts things in a specific order. Techtool has a defragmentation feature. idefrag also does optimizing.
You can defragment a drive by completely copying off all the files (use a cloning tool), reformatting it and then copying all the files back on. Again, I don't see mention by many people here of ever doing that.

Help with Mac Help Viewer

Hello to whoever is looking at this posting. This may be somewhat out of the norm, but for some odd reason, if I ever try to use the Help function in finder, nothing displays. I just get a blank screen with the "ask a question column", but it acts like it is trying to load continuously. I have to force quit to exit.
Does anyone know why this would be or if there is a specific software update to rectify this problem. This machine is still under 1 year basic warrenty, would it make sense to contact support for this? I have no other software conflicts which is the weird thing. Im using Mac OSX Version 10.3.9.

This is a common bug in Panther. The solution to this problem is simple though:
• (~ means your home directory)
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the following files.....
com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpui.plist (you may or may not have this one).
com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Next go to ~/Library/Caches and delete the folder......
com.apple.helpui
Log out and log in. If the problem is gone, empty the trash. If not, put everything back.
or you can open MacHelp directly from .....
/Library/Documentation/Help and it works fine.

Sadly, Firefox no longer includes support for MacOS 10.4, however you can still use browsers similar to Firefox. <br>

Need help with Mac & PC not recognizing external drive (disk not readable)

I am having trouble getting my computer(s) to recognize my Seagate External Drive.
Have tried on my MacBook, iMac, 2 Mini's & my roommate's PC and all reveal the same issue: The Disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
MacBook/iMac both are working off of Leopard
Both Mini's are on Tiger
It won't show up in finder, rendering it unobtainable. I need to get the information if at all possible off of this hard drive (very important!!) so any help I can get would be greatly appreciated!

Need help with mac and java

Hi, I'm trying to develop an application on a Machintosh OSX 10.2.8 machine.
I'm having a herrendous time trying to get quicktime to work on it.
I've somehow managed t oget 1.3.1 and QTJava.jar to work together but now i need encryption, however that requires 1.4+
Now 1.4.1 doesnt work with quicktime
I've downloaded the latest software upgrades but Ive got no idea how to set up quicktime to work with java 1.4.1
Now to add on top of that mac reports it can use AES encryption. this is from source code ripped striaght from this website.
But first and foremost can anyone, annyonee help me out with setting up 1.4.1 with quicktime?

If you need encryption with Java 1.3.1, download the JCE from either Sun (http://java.sun.com/products/jce/) or Bouncy Castle (http://www.bouncycastle.org/).

Setup help with Mac Book Pro

I recently bought a wre56g v3 for my gf and tried to get her to set it up.
problem is she is on a wireless network with her appartment and due to her being on "the bad side" of the building, she does not get good signal throughout her appt. I want to setup the expander to get the signal to the rest of her apartment.
i cant use the CD since she is using a mac, and i dont know much about macs anyway. she dose have an old dell that i tried and it found the correct network and channel, but when it was searching for the expander it either found a diffrent SSID network (a0756030) or nothing at all (it has a very weak wireless card.
i tried to plut it into the dell but that didnt help anything.
Can anyone point me to directions/insturctions on setting up the wre54g with a mac book pro wirelessly?
can you set it up on the iphone?

Help with Mac OS X Lion clean install

I have a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro that has Lion installed which was upgraded over Snow Leopard. I have heard that performing a clean install can freshen up the system and is just generally a good thing to do. When I downloaded Lion from the Mac App Store I made a bootable disc because I heard it's something good to have just in case. I have also been backing up to an enxternal hard drive using Time Machine. So I was thinking about doing a clean install but I wanted to make sure of a few things and to get your thoughts on if it is actually a good idea or a waste of time.
I would format my hard drive then restart and hold down the option key, choose to boot from the disc and clean install. Once finished use Migration Assistant to move my data from the external hard drive with my Time Machine back ups and that should be everything done and dusted.
I know I have probably got something wrong somewhere and have maybe even got the completely wrong idea about the whole thing.
I would appreciate any help and advice, thanks.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

Seeking help with Mac refurbs and licensing

This question has been dogging me for some time.
I work with a company whose primary mission includes delivering computers and computer training to low-income citizens in the Seattle area. While we deal primarily with Windows PCs, we have a small but significant number of Macs. All of the computers we receive are donated by local businesses, and many ship without the benefit of an original OS to work from.
The Macs in question are primarily "Sawtooth" G4's
We've tested many of these Macs with OS X 10.3.
I am the only person within the company who has any knowledge of the Mac platform, and in my testing, I've found that the Macs we carry perform on a level with our typical Pentium III desktop units. I'd absolutely love to help the company get these Macs out the door--but we've been stumped by licensing issues.
So, here's the question: As a small non-profit organization, are there any avenues we can pursue to acquire Mac OS X licenses for refurbished units at minimal cost?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Like Donny has suggested I'd try contacting Apple.
Failing that, it seems a shame there isn't a simple and cheap way for people to donate their old OS X system discs/licences. I only use my Mac for home use here in the UK but have a whole load of old OS X system discs (original full retail versions) going back to the public beta. They're not in use anymore as the computers have since been upgraded with later versions of the OS. I guess I could try and sell them on eBay but for the few pounds they'd fetch it probably isn't worth the trouble. I'm wondering whether there are any similar people closer to home (in the States) that would be willing to donate their old OS X system discs/licences to a good cause - and not subjecting anyone to Windows has to be a good cause no matter where they live!

Help with MAC OS x 10.6.8

Both Mac Book Pro & Mac Mini updated to OS x 10.6.8 - Snow Leopard. Two questions. When trying to print to HP Photosmart B210 the printer icon bounces & states it is busy. Attempts to re-install printer, new drivers failed. Is it possible that the printer is no longer compatible with this upgrade? Also, when in Safari I get a blank page when selecting an item. IE - when in HP.COM I select shop now & I get a white page. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Need help with Mac Pro purchasing decision

I've read preliminary reviews on the new Mac Pro, and I'm ready to upgrade my current Mac Pro (which is Dual 2.4 Ghz Quad-core with 32 GB RAM). But I'm going through some major turmoil in the decision. My current Mac Pro, aged as it may be, has been good to me, and when it needed upgrading, it was so easy to do. I installed an additional two internal hard disks, giving the Mac Pro 3 TBs of internal storage. RAM upgrade was a breeze, and when the graphics card went out, I was able to buy and install a replacement without a hiccup.
I love the low profile of the new Mac Pro, albeit I'll still be putting it on the floor - I don't like having my desktop computer in my desk work area. And it looks like upgrading the RAM in the new Mac Pro is pretty simple (although horribly expensive). I would require a CD/DVD drive, so that becomes a piece of "stuff" I have to clutter my work are with. However, most importantly, the internal storage issue, FOR ME, is huge. Without the ability to add internal drives, getting the 1TB flash storage is a must, but sooooooo expensive. AND.. I still need additional storage (more than half of my current 3 TBs is in use).
Moreover, the whole lack of upgradability has me concerned that the new Mac Pro may disappear like the G4 Cube. I haven't seen any rave reviews of the new Mac Pro overall.
But I need to upgrade.
I have configured a new Mac Pro on the Apple Store about 100 times now, but never making the purchase for all of the above reasons, as well as the $5K price tag that it keeps ending up at. I even started looking at refurbished Mac Pros (newer than mine, but the same old huge silver case). The advantage is that it's upgradeable, and I won't end up with an optical drive or external hard drives cluttering my desk space.
The truth is, every time I go to buy, either a new Mac Pro, or a refurbished one, I hit a wall. I'm walking the fence, wondering if I should walk it until a newer Mac Pro shows up with more expandability options (although it seems unlikely since Apple's direction seems to be form over function).
The new Mac Pro has been out for awhile, so I am looking for feedback from people who are kind of in my shoes, but already bit the bullet. I don't want to encourage replies of regret, but I also would prefer the truth over grandiose reviews simply to justify making the leap (and dropping some huge bills). It happens... "I just spent 5 grande, I better **** well love it, and I'll make sure everyone else thinks I do!" ;-)
Please share your experiences. How have you gotten around the lack of upgradeability on the internal storage? I have had bad experiences with external drives in the past. Firewire drives were fast and furious, but the were not as reliable as internal drives. USB drives lag, and that dreaded spin up time every time the Mac OS does something that wakes up all the drives, even if the external drives weren't actually being accessed (never had that problem with Firewire drives, maybe because they were always spun up?).
Anyway, I don't want my buyer's pain to turn into buyer's remorse, so I appreciate all the wisdom any of you would be willing to share.

I'll offer my comments although there are others much better qualified to answer than I am.
First, the reason I bought the machine that I got was that I found an "open box" deal at a local retailer and got a substantial discount from the normal list price. Otherwise, I might not have gone to the nMP quite as quickly as I did. Regarding ram and the ssd drive, both of these can be upgraded at some later date if I find that is needed. The ram I will probably bump asap, filling the one empty slot with likely an 8gb OWC module.
To run your VGA monitors, you will need 2 passive mini-display port to VGA adapters. You can buy these pretty much anywhere, the Apple ones are superb quality at a price but other options are out there. These will plug into 2 of the Thunderbolt ports on the nMP.
Regarding cpu's and gpu's it gets a bit confusing. Basically right now it depends on the software that you are going to run. It is not likely coincidence that FCPX 10.1 came out basically at the same time as the nMP, as it really highlights full use of the multicore cpu's plus the dual fast gpu's. FCPX really screams on the nMP.
Right now, it seems more video software is making optimum use of both the multicore cpu's and dual gpu's in the nMP. Other software, most notably photo software that should also benefit, is lagging behind. For instance (going only from memory) Adobe software is not very good at using multi-core cpu's nor does it use multiple gpu's either. You can find comparisons of running Photoshop filters on a 3.7ghz 4-core vs the (slower clock speed) 6 or 8 cores and the 4-core comes out close or even faster in some tests because Photoshop uses only a single core, which on the 4-core machine is faster.
However, this is a pretty specific instance and generally buying the fastest cpu and gpu that you can afford is a good plan. Especially so for the gpu's as right now, the video may end up being the only component that does not end up with some sort of upgrade option in the foreseeable future.
If I was going to order a system under the circumstances you have stated, the 6-core with the D500 gpu's sure looks like the sweet spot in the lineup, and probably money well spent. After I would probably upgrade the ssd next, since in order to upgrade it later you have to remove a perfectly good ssd since there is only one slot. Personally I am ok with the 256gb as my boot and system drive, since with Thunderbolt you have basically PCIe access to an external box that can have either Sata or PCIe expansion for whatever storage you can afford.
As I said earlier, right now I am going cheap and using Apples Thunderbolt to firewire cable, which is allowing me to run my existing Lacie firewire drives in a daisy chain just as I did on the old MP.
Upgrading the ram at purchase or later is your choice, there are certainly less expensive options but with only 4 slots you have to weigh the cost of discarding or trading in the original Apple ram when you decide to swap it out for bigger modules. Plus not all ram can be mixed and matched, you may have to remove all the existing ram in order to add just a single high capacity (16gb or larger) module.

Help With MAC Mini Server and New SSD

Hey Guys,
I just got a Mac Mini Server. I swapped out one HD for a new SSD. A Crucial One.
I am booting in recovery mode and it only sees one HD and says it is 1.5 TB, (1 tb regular and the new SSD is 512)
I just want to run osx on the SDD .. help

I'm unsure of the proper procedure as I'm not experienced dealing with Fusion Drive setups. If Disk Utility shows you have a 1.5 TB drive, then what do you see when you boot the computer and check disk drive space using Get Info? I know you can revert the volume you have back to standard format if you don't mind using the Terminal in your Utilities folder:
Open the Terminal and paste or enter the following at the prompt:
diskutil list
Press RETURN. This will list for you the device information for your HDD. Here is an example of the output:
/dev/disk1
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *120.0 GB   disk1
   1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk1s1

You want what you see at the top left - /dev/diskn, where n is the integer number. Then enter or paste at the prompt:
sudo diskutil cs revert /dev/diskn ; replace the n with the integer number found above.
Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen, so be careful typing. Press RETURN again. Wait until it completes the process which is when the prompt returns.
Given the potential danger when using the Terminal in this way, please be sure you have first made a reliable backup. Better safe than sorry.

Changing password from single user mode:
You can also change the administrator's password from single user mode or create a new administrator account.
You need to get into single use mode for steps one and two that are listed below.

Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
1) You can change the password on an account. ( Do you know Unix. You are in a Unix single user console. ) The setup commands you need should be listed on the screen. For Mac OS 10.4.11, the commands are:
# Type the follow two instructions to accessing the startup disk in read/write:
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
# Start up some utility processes that are needed.
sh /etc/rc
# You will probably need to press the enter key once the system stops typing.
# To find out the users on the system type, use the list command:
ls /Users
# One of these accounts will be the administrator.
# Pick one of the users which I'll call a-user-name and type it in this command:
passwd a-user-name
# and enter the new user password. You need six characters.
# You will need to enter your password twice. Your typing will not show up on the screen just
# press enter when you complete the typing.
# For cryptic information on these commands try:
man ls
man passwd
The root account isn't enabled by default. I am not sure if changing the password on root will enable it.
2) Get the Mac to set up an additional administrative account. You can then change the password on your old account.
Start with your computer power off. Hold down command-s. Power on your computer.
Type in the following:
The first two commands will depend on your release of Mac OS X. Looked at what is typed out in the console to determine the exact format.
# Type the follow two instructions to accessing the startup disk in read/write. Press return after each command.
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /var/db
pwd
mv -i .applesetupdone .applesetupdone.old
reboot
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

Help With Mac OS X Disk Utility -

Hi, I have upgraded to Mac OS X Lion by download and had it a while. My MacBook Pro "13 crashed and i had to use the hold the power button to turn it off. I think the HDD needs a disk repair, I have tried to do it by booting the snow lepord disk I got with the laptop and the Disk Utility. It says, "the disk volume can not be repaired" do I have to do it with a Lion OS X disk or does it not matter? Will I have to reformat my hard drive and loose all my stuff?

Urgent Help With MAC Partition

Hello All,
I am completely new to MAC so please forgive me if its a silly question.
I recently brought a MAC RMBP (Late 2014) model which has OSX Mavrick 10.9.5 installed.
I managed to create a Bootcamp partition 120GB to install windows.
I want to create another 2-3 partitions from the remaining 380GB space assigned on MAC side.
The idea is to create separate logical volume for Data and Media and format them as FAT 32 inorder to be accessed by both OS.
I understand that I can create a cloud based storage or use an external HDD to store large data. But I am interested in knowing if I can further partition my MAC drive to different logical volumes.
I have actually used disk utility to sub-divide mac side into different drives, but now I can not boot with Windows.

Steps done:
1) Removed Recovery Partition
2) Merged the Blank partition to main Mac partition.
3) Started Boot camp and created a windows Partition.
4) Restarted PC before windows installation.
5) Opened Disk utility and created a shared partition (Out of Mac partition).
6) Formatted the new shared partition as FAT32.
7) Restarted the computer and holding option key selected the bootcamp option.
8) Windows installation starts but after a while I get a error message saying that its not able to detect the USB drive.
Note:
The USB drives with windows ISO and bootcamp driver (Both created using Bootcamp) are connected all the time.
Can someone please suggest if I am doing anything wrong?

I started downloading a game from a website I should probably never gone to, it wasn't bad it was just, sketchy, I started to download a game I wanted to play and then decided it may mess up my computer, so I cancelled it. But later on my computer started to get slow and glitchy, making it frustrating to do anything on my computer. Photoshop runs horribly and makes it so frustrating to draw, things load slow and it sometimes even types slow as a result. I think it's because of the website and game I tried downloading... what should I do? The mac isn't that old and I love the computer but I hate how slow it is. I tried clearing my browsing and downloading history and all to see if that would help and it didn't, so I was hoping someone could tell me if there's a way to fix it? I really want to draw and it's making it impossible to do so, in fact it's making it hard to do anything, even open a browser or play a game. I tried playing the sims on my computer after it happened and now the game glitches as well! What can I do?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
