Help with MacBook reimaging

Hello, I have bought a MacBook and it has no OS on it. I've started in Internet recovery mode, made a partition but when I go to install OS X Lion I get an error saying my Apple ID hasn't purchase lion. I don't have the original OS X disk. Can any advise?

Where did you buy it? All new machines come with an OS. Which MacBook? Details, please, if you want help.

  • Help with macbook to flatscreen tv

I have my comp going to my flatscreen from dvi to hdmi and into tv. my tv shows the "starry night with northern lights" on the screen the apple has, but nothing i do on the computer shows up on the screen??? I've tried switching from "hdmi source" to "computer source" and that didn't help? what am I doing wrong?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

  • Need help with Macbook reinstall on new hard drive!

    Hey Everyone!
So my old MacBook A1181 was damaged a bit in a fall from a shelf. I followed all the directions on PowermacMedic (bless them!) and put in a new LCD screen, as the old one was cracked. Cleaned a lot of cat hair out of machine while I was at it.
I also replaced the hard drive with a new one, because the old one had a question-mark-over-a-folder icon. I'm very proud of myself, as there are only four screws left over. LOL!
So now it's time to reinstall the Tiger system. The optical drive is not working, so I researched on how to make an external hard drive bootable, put the Tiger Installation on that and connected it via FireWire to the old MacBook.
Turned it on and pressed Alt/Option at the same time. Great...up popped the Tiger Installation information. I've clicked on Install, etc., and am at the point where I need to choose a destination drive. Except there is none listed.
I've gone to Disk Utility, and I can see the new drive there, but just the icon as the major piece of hardware...there's no sub-icon for it underneath, like there usually is.
So, any ideas on how to make my new hard drive readable so I can choose it from the Tiger Installer?
Any help would be much appreciated. I've never even attempted to do something like this before, and I don't want to give up just yet!
    Jenny

    Do this:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • Please help with Macbook Pro

Please read my story because I really need some help...
I've had my Macbook Pro for only a little over a year now but it has already given me tons of problems and headaches. I was very happy when I first got it but over the next few months I noticed strange things with it. For instance, the lid is slightly bent but not so much that it still looks ordinary when closed. I was annoyed with it but I tolerated it since it is not that disruptive. Then dust appeared underneath a small part of the screen, forming a rather conspiscuous, slightly discolored spot. Again I was annoyed but I just went with it. And then after only 5 months after purchase, something related to the hard drive broke. I think the ribbon cable that was connecting it to the motherboard died or something. It was still under warranty so it was easily fixed. A few months passed without incidents. Then a month after its warranty expired, it started to have kernel panics every single day. Most of the time the screen would just become a mass of messed up colors and nothing would respond. Sometimes the screen just went black and then the computer shuts itself down. Other times the computer just freezes with nothing responding and I have to force shut it down. I sent it to an Apple service center and had it diagnosed. The genius said that the hard drive is damaged and needs replacing but other components are still fine. So I bought a new hard drive and had it replaced. For a few weeks, the problem seem to have gone but soon, the kernel panics started again and occurred more frequently. After days of research I finally found out the problem is RAM related. I tested each stick and each slot and concluded that the bottom ram slot was busted. The Apple Service Center offered no help but to replace the motherboard (or logic board). I cannot go with this because I already spent a ton of money in purchasing the computer. I also could not get Apple Care because it is very expensive and I had no ability to spend more. So I resorted to just buying a single 4gb ram stick and tried to live with only one ram slot. I thought that I could finally relax and try to enjoy the computer even with all of its annoyances. But only a few days ago the Wifi just turned itself off and won't turn on. Only after a restart will it start working again. I tried to tolerate it but it keeps turning itself off just minutes after I turn the computer on. I suspect that it might be a hardware problem (again) because the same thing is also happening with my Bootcamp partition; wifi disconnects and will not reconnect. Bluetooth also is not working anymore. I know that this is a vague question but I'm desperate. Is there anything at all that I can do in order to fix all of the problems and prevent all sorts of headaches? I feel that I have tolrated enough and I just can't take it anymore. I want to have it replaced but I do not know how I am going to do that without Applecare (which again is very expensive for someone like me). Please help me. I do not want to go back to normal, less expensive PC's. If this keeps up then I will be forced to do so because it is very expensive to buy another macbook.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience but I do not think you can get AppleCare at this point in time.
Can I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime?
You can purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime within the one-year limited warranty period. Your eligibility for coverage under the AppleCare Protection Plan starts from your hardware purchase date. Apple strongly recommends that you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan when you purchase your Apple product to maximize the additional benefits provided under the plan.
You will most likely need to try to sell the mac for a parts machine and consider a PC. You may wish to explore Apple refurbished Macs that have a warranty of a1 year.
There are also many sellers of used Macs but since there aren't any extended warranties it is some what risky.

  • Kernal Panic Help with Macbook Pro 2010

    Hello fellow Kernal Panic enthusiasts.
I've had random panics more frequently on a Macbook Pro 2010. I've tried correcting permissions, resetting PRAM etc. It seem to happen at random, sometimes with flash (which has been disabled by default) in Chrome. Other occasions its completely random when using the finder, etc. Chrome crashes frequently, and again at random. Same happens for Firefox and Safari – it seems to be whichever I am using most frequently There's no way to repeat the panic.
Thank you for the help/suggestions in advance.

Pace is a copy protection software for some third party program your running, it's for Snow Leopard and this issue has appeared here before and once today even.
Quark Inc was here about their driver, so check them for a update.
Take note of the softwares above, your going to be reinstalling some of them from fresh sources and updating.
Run through the Steps 1-8 here and see if that solves your problem.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Disable all at login/boot softwares.
Yes some third party software mentioned above is not going to work as #8 Reinstall Just OS X will kick their parts out of OS X itself (but not out of Applications), but what you do is reinstall them one at a time, when it's been updated and verified to work with your OS X verison. (uninstall using the developers program or instructions, do not use AppDelete type software)
Take your time and if problems come back you know it's the last one installed is at fault.
The object with #1-8 is to make sure machine and OS X is fine, then decide from there what third party software is at fault.
If your problems continue despite the above software not being run or installed, then proceed with the further Steps #9-16 in the hunt for the real cause.
Chrome has been known to cause problems around here, it runs a root level updater for all Google software, it's hard to remove and one has to not use any Google software to prevent it being reinstalled.
Good luck in your process of elimination.

  • Need some help with Macbook Pro A1260

I purchased a non working MacBook Pro from Ebay as way to try out servicing Apple hardware along with the Windows hardware I service.
I have been able to get the laptop to power up, but only in an odd way.  By reflowing the logic board it will now start up, but only in certain order.
If I reset the SMC by pressing the power button for 20 seconds and than connect the power supply and still holding in the power button for an additional 20 seconds it starts when I release the power button.  I can turn it off and on until I unplug it and plug it back in.  When I do that it will not start again, if I perform the same SMC reset procedure it will work and turn on.  During this time the light on the power connector is off.  When it is LIT it will not start.  I also get just a white screen and no Apple logo.  It will also boot directly from the harddrive.  The problem is that the drive is a windows OS drive.  I put the drive in to see if the logic board would see it.
This machine was shipped to me without the hard drive and without the recovery disks.
Now as I understand it, unlike Windows and Linux you cannot boot from an install disk for the OS with an Apple product, is that correct?  That means I'm stuck here without the recovery disks?
When I first reflowed the logic board it booted to the apple logo then asked what to boot.  It seemed to boot fine and show the apple logo a couple times but now it is not.  I did start it up prior to getting it completely installed in the machine.  Should I try the reflow again?  Is it possible to get the recovery disks from Apple?  The apple store near by was not very helpful.  The person at the door was a little condescending, "it's nice to try and save a little money", "wow that's an old piece of hardware",  He totally missed the point that this an exercise in education.  I'm trying to learn how to help people when they cannot afford to purchase a new machine.  The same thing I do for Windows PC users.
Thank you for any and all suggestions and assistance.  I look forward to recovering this and checking out what the Mac users have telling me for years.

Ogelthorpe suggested that I add my two cents here.
This site is a wonderful accurate resource for a Lot of information about every Mac ever issued. The link is directly to the MacBook you seem to have:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .4-15-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
Your Mac initially runs the Power On Self Test. When that test passes, the chime is generated by software. If a reliable source of software can be found, booting is likely. If it fails only due to memory, the power light will flash a deliberate pattern (not just flickering), and it may also beep in a similar fashion. This indicates "not enough working RAM to start up", so in some cases, you will want to remove all the memory and look for those flashes.
The simplest boot-up procedure any Mac can do is to boot up while you hold the Alt/Option key. This runs a ROM-resident routine which draws a pale blue or gray screen, and over the next several minutes, explores all possible addresses looking for all possible appropriate source of appropriate software. If any are found, an Icon is drawn for each, and its name will be listed underneath. The mouse can be used to select one and click the arrow to proceed. Mac OS X can boot from any attached device, such as a USB stick or external (self-powered) DVD Reader or External Hard Drive.
The gray Apple in not resident inside your Mac's Hardware. Its loading indicates an appropriate source of software was found, and the first blocks of the boot loader were successfully transferred into memory. Hanging with the gray Apple on the screen indicates it failed while trying to run the loaded blocks of the Boot Loader.  With certain extremely rare graphics issues, the gray Apple can appear scrambled like a puzzle.
Many system functions, including fan and temperature control, charging, system clock generation and low level inputs such as keyboard presses are handled by the System Management Controller SMC. Resetting the SMC in case it has gotten into an odd state is vital to debugging.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If you removed the motherboard for baking, you may have seen the MagSafe charge board. These sometimes need replacement if there have been serious power problems previously, and are available as spare parts from the sources mentioned in posts above. Most other components are soldered in place, and in much later models, the RAM chips are soldered in place as well.
Mac OS X 10.6 uses the Installer/Utilities DVD to do auxiliary functions. Once you move to 10.7 and beyond, these are moved to the Recovery_HD partition on the Hard drive. Once installed, you can copy your Recovery_HD to a 1 GB USB stick using an Apple Utility, which can be booted independently. Macs after about 2011 (except the silver tower Mac Pro) have added the ability in firmware to get this stuff off the Internet via common WiFi set-ups. They can, from a cold dead start, download the stuff needed for Utilities and Installs.
If you download 10.7 or later form the Mac App store, you can make an Installer/Utilities USB stick on an 8GB stick. Making a dual-layer DVD is also possible, but is not as popular because it takes so long to boot up and install off a DVD. You must intervene in the process to make such an image. It must be done after the download is complete, and before the Installation has finished, because the Install package is deleted at the end of the Install. You can steer this or any Install to nay attached and properly-initialized drive.
There is no EXPLICIT copy protection on Mac OS X tools and images, but when downloaded, all will be tagged with the Apple-ID you supplied, and any re-load will require that same Apple-ID and password, or the new owner will need to download their own fresh copy using their own Apple-ID. If you are working mostly for a single client organization, you can ask them to provide their preferred Apple-ID, or create one and provide it to them to be used for their overall Mac APP Store purchases. Once purchased (even for $0), items in the Mac App Store appear on the Purchases page of the logged in Apple-ID, promised as "forever".
Windows does not believe there are any other Operating Systems in existence, so it limits you to booting from the Internal drive, limits the number of partitions that can be created to a total of four, and as its crowning achievement: should you use ANY Windows tools to directly modify or even resize disk partition information, the Apple Partition information is lost, and Mac OS X can no longer boot. Windows is a terrible guest.

  • Need help with Macbook Resources needed

    Hi,
I would like to buy a new laptop (probably a Macbook) and I would like to know if
1 Go is enough to make personnal video (via video capture with my digital 8 video camera)
Thank you very much for your help.

.. So I'm not going to yell after my "futur" macbook because it's too slow (video and/or CPU) because I just have 1 Go for the RAM....
    define 'slow' ...
I know, in the 'PC' world, speed is a huge issue.. I'm using Macs since '86, and used Windows at work... speed was never an issue for me... probably, I'm a slow man ... responsiveness, 'snappy' - yes, THIS is important, that's why I'm allways recommending to use at last 1GB of RAM.. the 'min. recommendations' of Apple for OsX are, imho, too low...
OsX/iM makes widely use of the 'speed' of the built in graphic-cards.. e.g. older Macs don't support that 'Quartz' thing... just read the specs of the apps... compare to the hardware you like to buy...
but, as said: iM is a consumer product; it fullfills consumer needs; if you want HiDef imports rendered faster than realtime, and encoding of a 2h videoDVD in less than 65min.. a MacBook is too 'slow'... if you want to edit family video, burn some nice 24min onto a DVD with good looking menus, and you're finishline is next Xmas... get any Mac ...
... the hardware needs of forthcoming (next week) 10.5. nobody can tell you, speculations are not allowed on this board...

  • Need help with MacBook. "You must restart your computer..."

So I just got a new MBP 13" back in April. Then a few weeks ago, I started getting these "You must restart" crashes out of nowhere. They weren't really specific to any task I was doing, but I noticed it happened most either while browsing the internet, or directly when opening the lid after it slept over night. It was just a bunch of random Kernal Panics that didn't really point to one specific thing. I suspected Google Chrome, but after an uninstall (deleting complete Chrome folder) and reinstall, still happened. Then just removed Chrome altogether and went to Safari, still happened.
Went to the genius bar and they did a few things that didn't work and said that they wanted to do a fresh install next. I hadn't backed up my system, so I bought an external, picked up my MBP, and took it home and did it my self. I backed up, then did a full reformat of the hard drive and did a fresh install of Lion. Restored my stuff from my backup. All was well for almost 2 days. Then bam, it happens again.
So I thought maybe I may have restored whatever software problem was there before I reformatted? But then I decided to test the RAM I put in it. About a week after I bought the MBP, I upgraded to 8GB. Got it from Newegg. Here is the specific RAM I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233215. Did a memtest over night, passed! But was still getting the problem. So I took the RAM out and put the factory RAM back in, and the problem hasn't happened since. And it's been about 5 days. Before, it was happening everyday, sometimes up to 3 times a day.
So I guess it's safe to assume that the RAM was the issue? Even though it passed the memtest? Only thing is, how do I go about getting them to warranty it? What do I tell them? Do you guys think that was even the problem or do you think it will happen again?
I can't get the apple hardware test to work. First, my computer shipped with no DVD's, so it has to use the internet. When it tells me to select my wireless network, my network isn't even showing up on the list. I tried typing it in manually and that didn't work either. Tried rebooting my router. Didn't work. So I tried using MyWi from my iPhone and that showed up immediately. But after it connected, it did nothing. It just displayed the grey spinning globe. Then gave me an error "apple.com/support -1005D" which gives me absolutely nothing when I search it.
The weird part is that when I'm using the computer normally, it connects to my network immediately upon booting. Why is the internet retore function not able to see my network?
I remember when I was trying to do the fresh install, my network wasn't showing up immediately either. It took about a minute to show up, while all my neighbors' networks were showing immediately. It also takes a long time for my Mac to see my Windows PC's on the network after it boots or wakes from sleep.

Definitely has to be the RAM.  Reinstalled the Corsair 8GB Ram about 24 hours ago and the problem has already happened twice back to back, where as it hadn't happened for a week when I reinstalled the factory RAM.  Here are the two new errors.  The second one happened right after rebooting from the first crash.  Still can't get AHT to run.  Getting a -1006D error.

  • Help with Macbook

I accidently put my Installation Disk for iMac in my Macbook and now it is stuck.  Any suggestions?

Ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode by hold down ⌘ -S through the boot process. At the prompt enter
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
To restart the computer enter reboot at the prompt or shutdown
    6.  restart hold down trackpad button
