Help with making DVD from quicktime movie

I just made a dvd using IDVD of my FCE sequence. I selected make dvd from movie. The FCE sequence was comprised of two parts. The first part of the time line was a sequence I imported as a quicktime movie and the remaining time line was the edited sequence which was the later part of the completed fce project. When I made an IDVD copy of the sequence (after exporting the full sequence to yet another quicktime movie), the only part of the sequence that recorded on the dvd was the first part --the quicktime movie I imported into the full sequence. As I watched the video asset encoding process I saw the 2nd half of the sequence encoding onto the burn but when I play the DVD it only plays the first part of the sequence over and over again and is missing the second part.
Any ideas why this happened?
Karen

thanks, Ronda, for your warm welcome!!!
nope, not yet, no door, no key, no membership card yet…
I think, I should give the folks at Cupertino a few hours… it's way too early…
oh, why do we Europeans don't use PST, or even EST…
nice smiley, Ronda, does anyone remember my old avatar…?
sorry, Karen, for jacking your thread!!!
… but, today, this is … excitin' for me... ;-))

  • Help with authoring and posting Quicktime movies on the web

    Greetings all,
I recently launched a new website (www.articles-of-war.com) with a 'movie trailer' page (http://www.articles-of-war.com/pages/down_trai.html) similiar to the movie trailer pages on the Apple site.
The page has links to Quicktime movies of different sizes (small, medium, high, HD, etc). When I click any movie, though, it takes a long time for them to appear before they can play (the blue Quickime "Q" logo appears as the entire movie loads, for example), rather than playing almost immediately.
When I built the trailer pages, I made sure to set "autoplay" to "true."
When I authored the Quicktime movies, I used these settings:
    H.264
Prepare For Internet Streaming (Fast Start)
    Data Rate: Automatic
I'm sure I'm skipping some simple step to make these movies play right away - is there anyone that can offer some advice?

You lost the "fast start" feature when you added the annotations and then used a regular "Save".
Use "Save As" (QuickTime Pro) to restore the fast start feature and upload those new files again.
You should also consider a more modern audio codec than IMA 4:1 to reduce the size of your audio track.

  • Does anyone know a good converter from quicktime movies to dvd format?

Does anyone know a good converter from quicktime movies to dvd format?

I'm guessing that your using One Step DVD . This will only work with one movie at a time.
Create a new project and all you should have to do is drag your movies from your movie folder onto your iDVD project. You can add as many movies as you like but obviously you can't exceed the maximum total DVD size.
Encoding can take a long time depending on the original file format, but you should be able to use pretty much any file format you can play with Quicktime.

  • Help with making JLabel visible for a few seconds only

    Hello guys,
I need help with making a JLabel object visible for a few seconds only and disappear when a JButton has been clicked.
Here is piece of code where I add mouse listener to the JButton object in my case is (jrbFigure1) and
when is called sets icon and text to the JLabel jlbl object:
    jrbFigure1.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() {
    jrbFigure1.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() {
    public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
    jlbl.setIcon(cross);
    jlbl.setText(wrong);
This piece of code is in a switch statement, the statement is in a method.
The JLabel jlbl object is added in a panel in the constructor of the class.
I really hope someone could help me on this issue.
I would like to thank you in advance for any help or advice given.

I want the label to appear for X seconds when then button is pressed and disappear after that. Then a Swing Timer is what you want to use.
I need to do this in a number of cases from a switch statement because I several buttons.Better to have several ActionListeners, one for each button or each type of button, rather than one ActionListener with a large switch statement, a so-called switch-board listener. They're messy to debug and upgrade.
I tried to use Swing Timer, but I cannot set it properly.Go through the Sun Swing tutorial on Swing Timers. It's all outlined for you there: [http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/timer.html]

  • M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker

    Hi,
My M30x MultiDrive will not burn DVDs from Windows Movie Maker and other applications.
I have also had problems burning CDs (unbranded) from Windows XP, built in utility.
Does the multidrive have problems, with cheaper brand disks?
    Just to note,
The laptop has been back to the support guys three times so far with various issues.
    (1) The hard drive failed.
    (2) The multidrive failed.
    (3) The motherboard got replaced, because of power failures, it wouldnt charge the battery or recognise that the power adapter was plugged in.
Note: The harddisk, not the exhaust fan makes the most noise in mine!
    Thanks

    Hi
As far as I know the preinstalled burning software (i.e. record now, drag ndrop) disabled the Windows XP burning option. In this case if you want to use the Movie Maker or Windows media player burning option, you should to enable this possibility.
Please go to driver properties (right click). Please select the Recording tab. The option Enable CD recording on this drive should be marked.
I use the Nero burning software and in my opinion its a one of the best burning programs. Furthermore you should try different CD/DVD manufacturers because some CDs and DVDs are not compatible with some drives. Check the TDK CDs and DVDs. I never had any problems with these medias.
    Best regards

  • MPEG-2 DVD or Quicktime Movie File ?? HELP!

I am finished with a ten minute video that needs to be burned to DVD with the upmost quality.
I captured and edited the project in 1080i HD.
Should I export as MPEG-2 DVD and then to Encore?
Or should I export as a Quicktime Movie File at maximum depth?
Which one will look best on a DVD??
Are these my two best choices, or is there another way to do it to make the quality even better??
I need this done by tonight, so if anyone can lend there expertise, i would be so appreciative.
    THANK YOU ALL
PS- I have cs4 Premiere and Encore
    Mac Pro Quad Intel
    Canon HD cameras

As far as I know, the DVD specification calls for MPEG, not Quicktime... so Encore will just have to re-encode a QT file (if it will even accept that format as input)
You may, of course, export as DV AVI type 2 with 48khz sound and let Encore do the actual encoding to DVD format

  • Best Data Rate for Export to DVD as Quicktime Movie

Hello - hope someone out there can help me!!!
I put together a slideshow for my high school reunion using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and need help with settings exporting it as a Quicktime movie.
*I want to export it to a DVD* so that I can play it on a friend's laptop and I'm not sure if iDVD would be the way to go - my friend has a Macbook Pro I can borrow so it might be okay - I am worried about the fact that I've been working on older software. (I have read about opening iDVD and bringing in iMovie project vs. "share to iDVD"). So they suggested instead of iDVD I just export as a quicktime. Then I can burn it in Toast (v.6.0.2)
    Wondering about *BEST DATA RATE?*
    In export settings I have:
    compressor set at H.264
frame rate: current (should that be DV-NTSC?)
    key frames: automatic (?)
    encoding: best quality/multi-pass
    should data rate be automatic?
Some details that might be relevant to helping me:
*Stills brought in as clips with cross-dissolves, only two uses of "Ken Burns effect"
*Some stills were in the project from my LAST reunion - I realize I should have reimported all the stills since I am now recompressing them, but it's too late now!
    *no audio
*Slideshow is about 45 mins long, file size says 5.52GB although when I looked into exporting it last night it said 9+GB - not sure why
*Using a G4 Tower (not my ancient laptop) with OS 10.4.11, Dual 533MHz PowerPC, 1.5GB SDRAM
    iDVD version is 6.0.4
please help if you can!! thank you in advance...

Are you trying to burn a standard DVD or are you trying to put a QuickTime .mov file on DVD media?
A standard DVD doesn't worry about file size (only the duration).
A "data" DVD is limited to the type of media used. A single layer DVD is about 3.7 GB's.
In order to make a data DVD you need to keep the data rate low enough to not exceed the DVD media playback abilities. They can't handle the higher rates found in many of the preset options.
You can avoid all of these headaches by telling the viewer to "copy" the .mov file from the DVD to their Desktop. Then nearly any of the presets option will work.
H.264 is a great video codec and the "automatic" preset should work just fine. Use "multi-pass" for best quality (takes a very long time). Remove the check mark for "Audio" since your file has none. Leave it checked and you waste file size because a silent audio track would be added.

  • Making DVDs from DVCPRO HD footage

I DVCPro HD media (Panasonic HVX200 camera) in FCP timelines. I need to quickly create DVD's for translation of foreign language interviews - so quality can be so so. At this point, I've been advised to use Compressor, selecting Best Quality 16:9 90 min., and then to use DVD Studio Pro to make DVD's. Is there a faster way - or could it be done with iDVD? Thanks!

There are two conversions happening in this workflow, the framesize frm HD to NTSC, and the mpeg compression for DVD.
If you send the sequence directly to Compressor from FCP, it will re-process all of the original frames, and ignore any pre-rendered material. So if you nest the HD sequence into a SD sequence, don't nother rendering.
Now I have had good results going directly to SD mpeg directly from my HD sequence. However, encode times have been roughly 2 or 3:1 on my 2.66 Intel Mac Pro. That's using 2-pass VBR encoding (best).
Nesting the sequence might increase the amount of time required to encode with Compressor. You might find it beneficial to export a SD Quicktime Movie of your sequence to the finder from your HD sequence. The total amount of time required should be about the same, but you can then drop the SD QT file into Compressor without tying up FCP during encoding.
    Hope this helps -

  • Chapter markers lost from quicktime MOV in compressor

I searched on this topic and can't seem to find it specifically. Soo....
When we export from FCP through compressor to an m2v, chapter markers come through fine and appear in DVD SP just fine. However, an editor of mine exported to a quicktime MOV with the chapter markers. The file, when opened in quicktime, show the chapters there.
However. If I run the MOV through compressor using the same set ups, the chapter markers are striped from the resulting file.
I am wondering if there is something I am missing when I have to do this from an MOV with chapters.
    OR
If there is some way to export or extract the chapter marker information in a way that DVD SP can import. The text track that is in Quicktime has a good deal of other information that DVD SP won't accept as a chapter marker file. Argh.
Can FCP export JUST the chapter marker text. I am obviously going to just go in and add the chapter markers to the track in DVD SP myself. But, as everyone knows doing this after compressing to M2V I will no longer be able to have those markers on the exact frame I want due to GOP.
So, I am asking this for the next time I have an MOV with chapters that I want to convert to mpeg2 and retain the markers for DVDSP.
Just so you know... yes. These markers where properly tagged as chapter markers. (obviously because quicktime shows them as such.)
Thanks guys. I know someone else has had to deal with this somewhere.

I must be losing it. I meant to post in this thread.
My chapters are clean. Pretty good at avoiding anything problematic. I even keep spaces out of my folder names because when I learned to use computers they weren't allowed. (only 128 characters too, if I remember correctly)
I have the previous versions of Final Cut Studio. The recent decline of DVD and the economy has eaten my departments budget to upgrade the OS to Leopard and to Studio 2 so FCP 5.1.4, etc.
Maybe this has been fixed in the upgrade?
My editor has upgraded. So, this would be entirely a moot issue if Apple saw fit to make their projects backwards compatible. (Don't get me started on that) I guess I will have to stay on top of my contract editors and sending me an XML so I can work in their projects. Or giving me the M2V's I ask for already rendered.
Until we can upgrade around here.
    thanks for the help tho.

  • Need help with "batch saving workflow" quicktime / automator

    Hi, my goal:
I have a lot of folders with (windows) DV-avi files I need to change container to apple mov.
The best way - I found out - to just change the container from avi to mov - without touching the video and audio stream or metadata - is:
open the file in quicktime pro 7
save as self contained movie (same filename, same location).
    wait til finished.
    open next file...
As far as I understand, the script should open and handle many files automatic, file by file - always waiting til process is finished, before starting with next file.
A probably similar thing I found is a script for batch encode..... but I need batch save , because I don't want to "touch" the source media
    on run {inputFiles}
if inputFiles is equal to {} then
set inputFiles to (choose file with prompt "Select the file(s) to convert:" with multiple selections allowed without invisibles)
      end if
      open inputFiles

    on open droppedItems
tell application "Finder" to set inputFolder to (container of first item of droppedItems) as Unicode text
set outputFolder to (choose folder with prompt "Select output folder:" default location (inputFolder as alias)) as Unicode text

tell application "Finder" to set fileName to name of currentItem as Unicode text
        convertFile(currentItem, outputFolder & fileName & ".mov", exportPreset)
        delay 30
      end repeat
    end open
    on convertFile(inputFile, outputFile, exportPreset)
      tell application "QuickTime Player"

      do shell script "/bin/ps -xco %cpu,command | /usr/bin/awk '/" & processName & "$/ {print $1}'"

As I can’t get it to work myself, I ask for help…….
    Appreciate your answer
    all the best from austria

You don't need to go through the double export process. You can either place the edited and rendered 720p sequence in the 352x288 sequence and then export, or you can scale the image down on export in the QuickTime Conversion export module, or in Compressor. Any QuickTime can read uncompressed video.

  • Help with slideshow & labeling from iPhoto and Apperture on iMac

I have an extremely long slideshow of photos on iphoto which is causing me not to be able to download it to a DVD. I was told that if I put it in Apperture, I would be able to make the DVD from there. Can someone please help me with this project? I also need to know how to insert names over the photos, or at the bottom of each one. I did this for a family reunion and promised everyone a DVD and now it's 6 months later and I still don't have them ready. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance. D

Export the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.
    Other options:
    Burn: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn
    Toast: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/6351/toast-titanium
But there are lots of others too. Search on the App Store or MacUpdate\
You don't need Aperture for this.

  • Audio is not synced with video after Exporting QuickTime Movie

I have Canon DSLR footage shot 24p/1080p on the timeline. Timeline settings are the same as the Canon footage settings.
When I Export a QuickTime Movie, the audio is out of sync...
Can someone please help with this issue...
    Thanks,

Don't tell me...you edited the files the camera shoots without converting, right? The camera shoots H.264...FCP doesn't like to work with H.264. The problem is that it SEEMS like it will work, but really is rife with issues when trying to work with it. You have encountered one...loss of sync.
The proper workflow is to convert the footage first...
    #51 - Canon 5D MkII / Canon 7D footage into FCP
Shane's Stock Answer #51 - how do you bring in footage from the Canon 5D and 7D cameras into FCP to edit?
You need to convert all of the Canon 5D MkII footage from the H.264 format that it records, to ProRes 422 (ProRes HQ is unnecessary...no quality difference)  Yes, the file sizes get drastically larger.  H.264 is an acquisition and delivery format, not an editing one.
You can use the Canon EOS Log and Transfer plugin that works with the 1D, 5D and 7D cameras.  This plugin is great because it brings in the camera's TIME OF DAY as timecode, instead of starting each clip at 00:00:00:00 like Compressor or other conversion software will do.

Here is a tutorial on how to use it:
    http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/ssimmons/story/canon_releases_a_dslr_plug _in_for_final_cut_pros_log_and_transfer_tool/
And the workflow for tapeless ingest into FCP:

But for a quick fix...change your SEQUENCE SETTINGS to ProRes...render, and then export.

  • Need some URGENT help with 3 DVD mastering issues PLEASE! :

    Hi there,
Firstly, I am running DVD SP 3.0.2 on Mac OS 10.4.7 on a G5 Dual 2 GHz 3Gb Ram plenty of HD space...
I am creating a DVD with: An intro sequence, a main menu, 4 sub menus, and 4 sections with around 12 chapters each.
I am having some big problems, and a pretty stuck. I will lest them separately below, numbered. If you are able to help, please refer clearly to which number you are helping with. Any help is MUCH appreciated! Many thanks!!
    1. Each of the 5 menus (1 main, 4 sub) have a background video, and a separate audio track. I added the background videos by simply dragging them to the assests panel, then from there onto the menu editor window. They are created in FCP and are properly encoded. However, when I click the motion button, or use the simulator, the videos do not show up. The music plays, but all i see is plain black.
    What is going on?!?!?!
    2. I am really struggling with rollover buttons. I have custom created buttons, and I wand them to have a soft red glow around them when hovered over. HOW ON EARTH DO I ACTUALLY DO THIS??
The buttons are in photoshop so can be exported with/without background/glow in any format.
    3. Is it possible, once I have got the above rollover working, to have an image to the right hand side of my buttons which changes with the the button rollover. i.e. hover over button 1, see image 1. hover over button 2, image changes to image 2.
PLEASE PLEASE give any help you can, I have a deadline coming up and am quite stumped. Thanks again!!

I am still having problems regarding issue Number 1. PLEASE ANYONE HELP?!
Sorry, I'm not sure about the motion menus. I avoid those whenever possible. But you might click on the menu in the storyline tab (whatever it's called -- the hierarchical view with the disc, tracks, slideshows, etc.) and look at the properties and see if there's anything you have to enable specifically for motion. And be sure the motion button is on on the main display/preview area, but it sounds like you already know how that works.
For your information, here is a screen grab of the menu I am trying to create:
    http://www.redhavoc.co.uk/stuff/menu.jpg
I think it is obvious that when a button is hovered over, I want it to glow red, and the image to the right will change to match the respective button.
IS THIS GOING TO BE POSSIBLE????
    Yes.
First, your menus have to be layered menus. Unfortunately, there's no way to convert non-layered menus to layered menus, so if you already have non-layered, you'll have to just delete them and create new layered menus. The button (and menu item) to create a layered menu should be right by the normal new-menu item.
Next, the graphical work is all in Photoshop.
Side tip: You may already know this, but I found it's best to use 640x480 for the Photoshop document. When I do text and leave it as a text object in the Photoshop file, it resizes poorly in DVDSP. So this ends up being another 720x480 vs. 640x480 square/rectangular pixel conversion thing. DVDSP plays in the 640x480 world, at least as far as the designer can see. So I keep my images at 640x480, and it doesn't have to resize, and everything looks right.
Moving on... Set up your basic background, the part that won't change (or will have other things covering it, like for your square image).
Then put in all the buttons and images you'll be using, each part in a separate layer. This could have fifteen buttons (you have five buttons, and there can be three versions for each -- inactive, selected, and activated versions) and five or six square images (you said one for each button, and you might want a blank default if, say, you want to add a "back" button on the menu and want some blank or default image for the square when they're on the "back" button).
Sometimes people don't bother with a separate "active" button state, but you usually want some visual feedback that they clicked the button. Also, I usually just build the default (unselected) button into the background; that's less hassle later on, and it will just draw the selected or activated buttons over that when the user is on that button.
Line up all your buttons and images. All the square images lined up perfectly on top of each other, all the buttons in the right places (so you'll have three buttons stacked on top of each other in each spot). Give each layer a short but quickly recognizable name, and line them up in a consistent order. (button1-default, button1-selected, button1-active, button1-squarepicture, then button2-default, ... etc.) Photoshop and DVDSP don't care, but it makes it easier for you later.
Note that earlier versions of DVDSP won't show Photoshop layer effects. (They handle layers, just not the effects, like inner glow, outer bezel, etc.) I don't remember when they changed this, but I think it was version 4.something. So if you're using that method to make your buttons glow, you may have to flatten each selected or active button layer, and you may even need to create a dummy blank layer underneath it first to give it something to flatten onto.
Save the file as a standard Photoshop file (.psd). Drag the file onto your DVDSP layered menu and set it as the background.
Now, in DVDSP, create all your buttons. Just drag boxes over/around the button pictures you have. Feel free to make them extra-big; users won't see the actual area you've selected, and bigger areas makes it easier for people to hit them if they're using a mouse on a computer to watch the DVD. You can point the buttons to their targets now if you want, and set the end jumps on the tracks if you want. (I tend to set the end jumps on the tracks so they automatically select the button for the next track.)
Now's the fun part, since it will actually hook everything up and should be easy if your naming layer order were consistent. Click on the layered menu (in that hierarchical view) and look at the properties window. (Sorry I can't remember the technical names for all these windows; I'm doing this all from memory. So feel free to ask more questions if you can't find what I'm talking about.) One of the properties tabs should have a grid of checkboxes with a list of your layers. Make sure the background is checked for all of the states. Then check the layers you want to show for each button state, as well as the corresponding square image to show for each.
Again, I'm doing this from memory, and I can't remember exactly how things are listed in that grid. But I remember it keeps your layers in the same order you put them in the Photoshop file and shows you those names, so it should make it easy to go down the list and check the right boxes.
And another side tip: You can update the Photoshop file, but once you've put it in DVDSP, if you change the layer order, it will screw up the check boxes you checked. It always shows you the layer names correctly, but it keeps the checkboxes in DVDSP simply assigned to the layer number, so the fifth layer will keep the same checkboxes even if you juggle them so some other layer is now the fifth layer. So if you do juggle the layers in Photoshop, go back and fix the checkbox list in DVDSP.
I put a sample Photoshop file based on yours in
    http://dan.black.org/layered-menu-sample.psd
It's quick and dirty, but shows the layer layout, and you should be able to drop it on DVDSP to play with. (I also won't leave it there forever, maybe a few weeks, so anybody reading this in a month or more probably will get a 404 for that url.)
Again, doing this from memory, so feel free to ask if anything doesn't work or doesn't make sense.

  • How to Create a DVD from a .mov File?

I have a .mov file of a concert and I want to make a DVD out of it. Ideally, I'd like to have full menu options just like a normal DVD. From the main menu, I'd like to have two choices: 1) being able to watch the full length concert, and 2) being able to select individual songs (much like a scene selection on a regular DVD). The .mov file is in really great quality (the concert was filmed in HD) so I'd also like to keep as much quality as possible. How can I separate my .mov file into separate chapters so I can place each individual song into the menu choices? Thanks for any help!

NOt sure what you mean by "first play." I've done the tutorials on iDVD, but still can't figure it out. Is it possible to delete a movie that in the right box, i.e., previously selected? For some reason it says i've exceeded the size of the DVD even though it's only 1.8 GB. So i want to delete it and compress what i have, but i can't get rid of what's there. I suppose i could just delete the whole iDVD file and start again, or change the file name of the movie on the HD, but that seems very unMac-like.
There's nothing in the iDVD help either on "project validation" errors or how to correct other errors. But right now a simple way to delete a movie would be helpful.
    Thanks
