Help with .mov files that QuickTime Player says it can't read

Help. I have .mov files (on an external hard drive) I can see that they are there, but every time I try to open any of them with QuickTime Player I get the error message "could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands."
Help....suggestions...ideas????

Same boat, hope someone has some ideas on this.

  • HELP! QuickTime Player says it can't read .mov files

I have .mov on an external hard drive. When I connect it to my MacBook Pro I can see all the files, which are in .mov format, but QuickTime Player says "The document “BSOL1480_01.MOV” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands."
    How can I fix/change this?

Did you try playing the file with Quicktime 7? Do you have Perian, Flip4Mac or VLC installed?

Putting aside copyright issues in (naive?) belief you have a legitimate use of the material, your problem lies in the file or disk. One of them is either corrupt or not compatible with the drive you are trying to read it on. Try it on another computer (even a PC) and if you can read it on that computer make a new copy of the file on a new disk or a firewire drive (or USB stick if it fits).

You should be able to play it using the free VLC:

  • Need help viewing mov. files in Quicktime 10, with Mac OS X, 10.6.7

I have Quicktime 10.0, and laptop with Mac Os X, version 10.6.7. I can't view certain mov files. So I looked up info online, that said to download Quicktime verson 7 to run with Version 10.0. When I downloaded Quicktime 7, I was told I could not install it because I already had Quicktime 10.0. Could definitely use some help!

Thank you so much! I successfully download the other version of Quicktime.
But, I'm still unable to view my mov file. I looked at the 'more info' tab and the Codecs is: MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode.
Any ideas of how I can get this file to play in Quicktime, or open in Final Cut?

  • Help with movie files

I searched for an answer to my problem and couldn't find one...
I am trying to put 6 short mpg movie files into my iDVD project. I know you can't use mpeg video, I used Quicktime to convert the mpeg video to .mov files and lost my audio. I need to be able to put these files into my project with the audio, can someone help me?
    Thanks in advance.

I figured it out on my own, thanks anyways.
I used MPEG streamclip to convert to AVI files, and it didn't butcher my audio. Turns out they were MPEG-1 muxed files, I had to demux them.

  • How can i recover corrupt .mov files that quicktime does not recognise?

we recently 'lost' a whole day's footage by accidentally deleting it. in trying to recover these files we have used many different programs and have had odd results.... sometimes the data is recovered and shows only thumbnails but not the proper film and othertimes says tht quick time cannot open the link because it doesn't reconise the codec. these clips were filmed with a Canon SLR camera and we have searched the reformqatted sandisks as well with the same result.... quicktime does not recognize the file.
any thoughts? it would be a tragedy to lose this footage... well not really, but you know - a whole day's work!
thanks in advance for your help.
    Gabi

I managed to rescue damaged AVCHD footage using photorescue. Some files were not complete, but I got them to play by trying different players like VLC, or mpeg streamclip, then exporting the clip as a new same format file. One or two were too badly damaged to rescue, but I got most back eventually.

  • Help with transferring files that can't be read

Recently lightroom or my computer has been acting up. My files can't be read through my camera from a CF card to an external drive of mine. Has anyone else had this problem?

Maybe you could give us more details, like the exact error message you are getting, and exactly what you are doing and what happens. What type of files (JPG, RAW, other) and what camera? What operating system?
It could be any one a gazillion things (well, it could be any one of a dozen things) including hardware, permissions, wrong version of LR for your camera, etc.

  • Having issues with docx files that contain images. I can only see the first page of a multipage docx (the docx only contain images)

I'm trying to open a file for school on my ipad.  The file is a 14 page document that is text in the form of an image (i.e. someone scanned the document and pasted into micrsoft word).  When I open the file (docx format) in safari I only see one page.  If I save the file on my computer as a .doc I have the same problem.  If I save it as a pdf, I have no problem viewing it.  I was wondering if anyone else is having the same issue and if so, what they've done to solve it.  I use my ipad heavily for school, and do not always have access to a computer, so a solution that stays within the ipad would be best, although at this point i think my best option is to save it as a pdf on a computer to view on my ipad.

    Hey all,
I solved this problem. It was not a code-problem but a printer problem. This code do not work on a BrotherHL1660e-printer. On all other printer I tried it works fine.

  • No Picture with mov files

I'm trying to view mov files on Quicktime Pro. I can hear the sound, but no picture. Any suggestions?

Codecs codecs codecs. You need to have proper codecs to play certain types of video. What does ti say when you look at the movie inspector option for your video?

    Help!

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

In what file type and compression format did you download the YouTube content? I.e., to avoid such issues, you would normally download the source files as content that is natively compatible with your target player or convert incompatible file type/compression format combinations to files that are compatible with your targeted media player.
