Help with msi k8n nforce 4 platinum

recently my mobo msi k8n nforce4 platinum SLI burned. the northbridge chipset caught fire.
i found a used msi k8n nforce 4 platinum but NOT sli.
my processor is a 4400 amd socket 939 dual core.
os: windows vista with sp1.
1) i just installed the mobo and boot my pc. vista booted correctly, installed all the new controllers, restarted BUT from that moment i cant use the cool n quiet mode , vista shows that i have 16gb of ram!!! but i have only 2, and the mobo shows that the model of my 4400 is unknown so it cant show the one processor!! it olny shows one processor...
cool and quiet is enabled from the bios. but everest or amd power monitor shows 1,39 volt instead of 1,10 i used to have when the processor worked idle..
2) how can i change the rate of the ram in bios? in my previous mobo had specific option to choose between 1T or 2T. Now i cant find that option.. can you help me?
Thank you and sorry for my english...
bios version show on first screen 031105

sorry i didnt wrote the solution, i assumed you understood the bios issue.
my mobo had a bios with date 031105 now has the latest bios from the official site of msi
at the beginning a assumed that it had the latest bios because the guy i bought from told me that he had flashed the mobo with the latest bios so i didnt think to look for a bios from the beginning.

  • Help with MSI K8N Neo Platinum

HELP please- motherboard MSI K8N Neo PLATINUM: I tried to take away the backplate for the heatsink (on the back side of MB) in order to install the zalman HS beafore i read the forum (use a fan...) and the worst of all happend:
I scratched the back surface!! the scratches are minor, that is 4 scratches half a milimeter long each and not deep but i can see the copper of some lines leading from the memory slots to the processr. My question is : can I try and build the computer on that motherboard anyway or better buy a new one? is there a risk of dammaging other components? oh god what a mistake!

Make sure the new backplate is non-conductive. The backplate for the Hyper 6 has a non-conductive sticker on it. Make sure to keep it on if youve got one... If the lines are exposed even with the back-plate on perhaps you should cover them with some non-conductive (100% non conductive!) tape or something.
Then it doesnt matter if they are exposed, as long as they are ok.
A good tip, which got when i was removing my backplate, is to use a blow dryer to heat it up and the remove it with your fingers. That way youll also notice if it gets to hot
The glue gets sticky at blow drier temps. And pls, dont singe the MB with your blow dryer, you only have to make it hot, and if you cant touch it, how can you remove it with your fingers?
I guess theres no way of telling if you have a serious prob and no way to tell if your cpu will be ok. I guess you could (?) try and start it wíthout anything (cpu, mems) but a PSU, and then, if it (and maybe the PSU) goes "!Pfsssssss!"  or "bang!", youll now you will have to replace it.
I put a screwdriver through an asus board once, and it still worked...

I 've got a simple question and I hope that the answer is gonna be the same
Does PDP Systems PEP5123200+XBLK is compatibile with MSI K8N 2 Neo Platinum?
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything about this pair on the web and on manufacturers site either. So I've decided to post this subject on this forum, expecting that somebody would pop up with the answer.
    Thanks for your replies.

And yes I have tried different multis etc, but like I say, these memory contollers on Winchesters are pretty weird.  I found that my CPU does not like running with a memory divider, for example.
Its never a great idea to run asynch anyway.  Not unless you have really crappy ram that's holding you back so much.
    Quote
Besides, 9x285 is only 2565Mhz, which would slow memory bandwidth down anyway due to the mem contoller running slower.
Ummm.  I wouldn't worry too much about that if I were you.  You will have higher memory bandwidth running at A x 285 than you will at B x 265, no matter what memtest and others tell you.  (Providing the timings are the same of course.)
The problem is when you run your processor faster, it fools some benchmarks into thinking your memory bandwidth is higher, when it isn't.
Now whether 9x 285 runs faster *overall* than 10 x 260 (say), you would have to bench for yourself using whatever games/benchmarks you normally use.  I would say 9x285 probably *is* faster than 10x260, and you can probably achieve it with lower voltages too.  Its worth messing around with to find out.  3dmark01 is a great test for CPU performance.  Its very sensitive to CPU speed, yet unlike the really synthetic tests - like Super_PI, for example - it exercises your video card too.  At the   other end of the spectrum is 3dmark05, which is a fairly useless benchmark as far as CPU's are concerned.
    Chip
I was always under the impression that the memory controller matched the speed of the CPU.  So a slower CPU = Slower mem controller = slower bandwidth.  Can you tell me which memory banchmarks do not get fooled into showing lower memory bandwidth when the mem contoller is running slower when in combination with higher HTT?   I'm also aware that asynch is not as good as synch, I was just illustrating that the mem controller on my winnie is quirky to say the least.
I tried running higher again last night and running lower memory voltage prevents it from entering windows.  I need 2.85v to hit windows at higher HTT, apparently PDP use the voltage loving variety of TCCD.  If I could get my OCZ booster to work, I would test this theory.
What speed are you running your PQI at anyway?  I'm guessing it's not the speed shown in your sig, or you wouldn't be bashing the speed I'm running my memory at.

  • 250GB harddisk work in MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum

    Hi!
    I have a pair of WD 250GB SATA2 16MB cache harddisks (WD2500KS).
Currently they don't work in my Asus A8N-SLI DLX (BIOS messes up LBA and CHS setting with them)
(smaller 120 and 160 GB hdds work flawlessly in that mobo)
So i am considering to switch to MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum.
can anyone confirm these babies would work in that mobo?
Are there any known issues with higher capacity harddisks on MSI nforce 4 boards ?
also i hear that the chipset fan is very noisy. Is that true?
The other option would be the Abit A8N Ultra which has the heatpipe design but i am not so comfortable with Abit, since there are too mayn rumors about them.
    Any ideas?

  • MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Clarification of SATA

    Hi Folks!
Just some clarification from you guys in the know.
I have an MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Mboard. The specs say it will run SATA drives and am looking to upgrade.
Now from shooping around for price i was presented with three options.
SATA 150 , SATA 300 and SATA II
I have worked out that SATA 300 and SATA II are superior to the 150 but is my board capable of running any of the three or is my choice limited.
My motherboard specs just show that it is SATA compatible but no further info.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance.

Q-Tex, All your nVidia SATA ports [1-4] are SATA II 300 mb/s and the Silicon Image SATA ports [5-8] are SATA I 150 mb/s. SATA II drive brands to consider are: Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, WD [I know from personal experience that Seagate 's work]. I belive that there are still issues with Maxtors. If buying drives from retailer with a high turn over you will get a drive with the latest firmware [has the bugs worked out] and if you buy a drive that doesn't have the latest firmware it's not the end of the world - you can get a firmware upgrade if neccesary.

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum. DOn´t boot

I have a problem with my MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum.  Yesterday I started to mount my computer and when I finished to install everything the computer does not bind.  It swims happens, the Motherboard this not obtaining to receive energy  .  Until my Power Supply it is not functioning, does not receive energy!  Somebody has some Idea of that it can be happening?  Power Supply:  Seventeam ST-420bkv Processor:  Athlon 3000+ venice.  OBS:  All the components are new.

    Well it wasnt the battery
The one I pulled from the board was reading 2.68v, the new one is reading 3.17v, but the problem remains :((
BUT, I discovered if I hold the case power button in while switching the PSU on fom the back that the CMOS details are fine after all?!?! Not pressing the case power button results in the no boot problem. Maybe the switching that disables the battery when the AC is on is broke ???
Its a weird one alright but I can live with it till my next upgrade - which wont be MSI - too many bugs. I have a Gigabyte board in my second PC and its rock solid, dual BIOS and never had a single problem with it - maybe that or ASUS next time round )
Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
Would still like to know what the flashing led error is though??
many thnx for all the input guys.

MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum Problem

A lot of things could be wrong but it will be easier to figure out if we know what you did.  When you say you changed settings in Bios, do you remember your last settings and what you did?
It might be helpful if you created a sig (as described in the forum rules) to show what you have in your system like my sig below. (Hint- use profile button in sign on screen.)
Things could be broken even if there is no visible evidence (such as flames or melted component) of course.
If I had to guess and your d-bracket reading is correct, corrupted bios requiring new bios chip, but let's not guess as a lot of things could be wrong and you don't want to invest in a new bios chip if the board cannot be brought back to life.  Consider removing parts and testing them in an other machine.  Start with CPU and memory?
    Good luck.

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard extra firewire ports?

I'm installing an MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard into my case and although I don't need them right now, I would like to be able to access the extra firewire ports. Does anyone know the best way to get ahold of the MSI motherboard 1394 connectors for J1394_1 / J1394_2 option?
I have the D bracket with the LED's and two extra USB connectors but I don't have the firewire connector. I have USB ports and audio ports on the front of my case which I will use, but no firewire connector, but there is a place for one, just no connector/wires or hardware. Also what is the difference between those two connectors shown in the picture of the optional firewire that appears in the owners manual? They have a different shape.
Where can I get one? I don't need the proprietary peice if I can use something else.

Fireware ports are faster for example external drives will be fastest 1394 rather than usb2.
there are many companies doing drive bays which can add ports to your current case see Front Port Extension Unit however you need to decide what exactly you want,
The example shown passes through case & connects to rear ports.
I prefer ones hich connect to the mobo risers leaving rear ports free, however you then have the complexity of matching the pin outs so that it works with your system. Remember it's not like tring to boot, you may not get a 2nd chance if you miswire connection. . If you can find them the best connectors are those with single pin leads, where each individual wire has its own plug so that you can match it to the mobo's pin out diagram for the particular port.
    luck

  • MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Smart CPU Fan reports 0 rpm ?

    Hi
I have a MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum (MS-7125) motherboard with an Athlon 64 3700+ CPU and an Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64 HSF.
In the BIOS setup, in the 'Monitor H/W' area you can set something called the 'Smart CPU Fan Target'.
o  If I set this to disabled, it reports a fan speed of about 2,280 rpm.
o  If I set it to 40°C, it reports a fan speed of 0 rpm !  (the fan is turning)
The MSI Core Center utility and Everest Ultimate also both report the fan speed as 0 rpm.
I assume that if I disable Smart CPU Fan, the fan always rotates at max. rpm; if I set it to 40°C, the fan runs at a slow speed until the temperature exceeds 40°C, at which point it speeds up (likewise if I set it to 50°C or 60°C).  However, the fan IS turning.
Can anyone explain this ?  I would like the reassurance of having the CPU HSF speed reported.
Incidentally , the PSU is an Akasa AK-P460FG
       (3.3v = 30A, +5v = 30A, +12v1 = 14A, +12v2 = 15A)

Very old post yes but I feel the need to reply anyway because I have the same problem myself.
Very strange and would be nice to hear if any more of ya guys out there can see the same.

    Using 4xsata drives with MSI K8N NEO2

    Hi , yes unfortunately it's true !
Sata ports 3/4 is the fully nforce3 native chipset integrated (uses nvidia integrated PHY).
Use only theese if overclocking .
Satallink clock will be retained at 100mhz always .
Sata ports 1/2 are bridged from the nvidia chipset to an external marvell PHY .
Theese ones can not be used with HTT ref clock beyond ~230mhz +/- a few mhz without producing data corruption .
Satalink ref clock of 100mhz will scale upwards with increased HTT .
This issue applies to all nforce3 250GB/Ultra based motherboards with more than 2 sata ports regardless which vendor/make/model.
It's the chosen hw design that is the issue and no bios ever will fix it .
If you must have 4 sata drives , do like me and install a pci SIL sata controller card for the drives used for storage .
Take Abit NF8 (nf3) as an example .It has only 2 sata ports .
    Why ?
Only the true/fully chipset integrated sata ports is used .
Although the nforce3 chipset supports a sata link to an external PHY for port 3 and upwards some has chosen to not utilize it .
Nforce 4 chipset has corrected this hw design by adding more sataport by the link to external phy .
In nf4 four ports are fully/true chipset integrated , and does not suffer from this overclock barrier .

Need help with msi mega 180 + athlon xp-m combo

AFAIK, you shouldn't need a pinmod for a Mobile Athlon XP CPU to work in a nforce2 mobo
did you have any other CPU installed prior to this one? if so, refer here to clear the CMOS: Clear CMOS Guide
next, refer to your manual, or download from MSI, for location of the FSB jumpers; ensure J8 is shorted across pins 1-2, and J7 is shorted
finally, enter your BIOS setup menu, and under Advanced Chipset Features, set CPU FSB to 133mhz (or even 166mhz if you have DDR333 memory). the only thing i can't see in the Mega 180 manual is where you set the multiplier...
which is where the BIOS has limited overclocking features, and you might have a problem here
i think i'll pass this over to the Overclockers forum, where someone may be able to give a better answer....

  • Is my speaker system compatible with MSI K8N SLI Diamond?

    Hi!
Can I use my old speaker system with MSI K8N SLI Diamond. My speaker system is Creative Inspire 5.1 5500D Digital with decoder. Now 5.1 sound doesn't work properly. When I try look movie with PowerDVD6, center speaker is dead and no speech on movie. On PowerDVD6, SPDIF output is selected and tried also 6.1 channel options but no, speech will not play at center speaker. Some games too 5.1 surround doesn't work. I have connected my speaker system on motherboard coaxial SPDIF to speaker systems Decoder coaxial SPDIF, and speakers on that decoder. Do I have to buy new analog speaker system to get 5.1 surround working? If I connect my speaker system directly on MB analog outputs, sound balance in very bad, rear and front speaker is good but center speaker crackling and speech at center speaker sound like volume level is much too high.

Quote from: Stick on 10-February-06, 19:24:28
if you know that the speakers are working (tested on another pc) it is usually a software configuration error. if the decoder would mess up the sounds, it is unlikely that you would hear anything in the other speakers too.
My speakers systems works perfect my previous setup, when motherboard has nForce2 SoundStorm integrated chip.
Some other forums, peoples claims that this MSI k8n motherboard can't send multichannel 5.1 surround audio on SPDIF and I have to connect my speakers on motherboard analog sound outputs.
