Help with my daughter's iBook connecting to wireless internet

My daughter wants to connect to a wireless internet "node"(not sure of terminology) at her local cafe. She has an old G3 double USB iBook. What can she buy as a USB device to connect. Any help appreciated. Cheers

She needs an USB or Ethernet adaptor which supports any 802.11 protocol, or the original AirPort card.

I have tried restarting it and deleting the old usernames and paswords, but nothing works. I thought it might be an  internet problem but i am having the same problem at home and school.
    Can anyone help me?

My macbook stopped connecting to wireless internet. Ive tried everything. HELP!
Open System Preferences then select the Network tab.
Cick Assist me... then click Diagnostics
If any of the buttons on the left are red click Continue.
That should help narrow down whether it's Wi-Fi or your settings or your ISP.

  • Difficult to connect to wireless internet

    Hello,
I hope someone can help. I've been looking through these boards for days and nothing seems to work.
I am usually not able to connect to wireless internet if my macbook is more than about 10 feet away from my time capsule. However, SOMETIMES I am able to get a strong signal from another room - adding to my frustration.
    Here are its current settings:
Firmware 7.4.2 (I've tried all versions from 7.3.2 on - no noticeable difference)
    Connected to modem via ethernet.
    Radio mode 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Cannot install Airport Extreme Update 2007 002 because my hard drive does not meet volume requirements (???).
Therefore cannot install Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler.
TC is set to a unique channel according to iStumbler. Minimal interference.
    Many thanks for your suggestions.
    Paul

Wireless devices in the U.S. must by law, operate on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. The vast majority of wireless networks are running at the 2.4 GHz frequency, which is one of the same frequencies that cordless phones have been assigned.
I can't speak for Apple, but it's fair to say that they and all other manufacturers are limited to what they can do and have no control over that. The airways are already overcrowded and it will get much worse.
Your Time Capsule is capable of creating a wireless network at 5 GHz, so it's worth a try to see if that might solve your interference issues at 2.4 GHZ. There are far fewer networks in this range and cordless phones in general will not conflict with this frequency.
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Look for the Radio Mode setting and choose something like 802.11n only at 5 GHz.
    Update settings
The downside here is that older devices that operate on "g" speed will not be able to connect. I couldn't tell from your post whether you might have other devices there besides your Time Capsule and MacBook. I'm not sure if the MacBook will connect if it's more than a few years old, but worth a try.
Post back when you have had a chance to experiment.

When I try to download a movie it says it will be ready for viewing in 10 hours. I am connected to wireless internet. What is the problem?

How fast is your internet connection and do you know what wireless standard your router is? Because download time will depend on several factors. The 1st one being the speed of your connection,2) the size of the file being downloaded,& 3) how fast your router send and receieve the data.

  • Help with 10.4.5 VPN connection using PPTP to Windows 2003 Server

    Hi,
I've looked on the discussions for an answer to this but have had no luck so far, can anyone help?
I'm trying to connect my 10.4.5 PB to my Wn2k3 server (with RRAS) using PPTP VPN, however I keep getting stuck at the Negotiating phase of the connection and finally get this error in OSX Internet Connect:
Could not negotiate a connection with the remote PPP server. Please verify your settings and try again.
I can connect from my Win XP laptop so no issues with the router etc, do I need to make any changes to the server config?
    Thanks,
    Sahajesh.

  • TS1368 itunes on my new alienware laptop acts as if the computer is not connected. (which it is) can not sign in with my itunes username and password. itunes help even pops up with "your computer is not connected to the internet"....

so in other words, I can NOT sign in on my account, much less authorize this laptop. can't even access help.  have downloaded the latest itunes software, checked my firewall settings etc.... (the itunes help window even opens up with "itunes help is unavailable because your computer is not connected to the internet".  granted I am basically computer illiterate, in other words if something isnt working my knowledge is pretty limited with tweaking things. I need some help!

On an Alenware laptop, this issue is often older drivers on the Bigfoot networking card.
Head to the drivers and downloads page for your model of Alienware at Dell. Check for newer versions of the drivers for your Bigfoot card. If you're behind and you update, can you get through to the Store (or Help) now?

  • Help with a simple configuration to connect a pc and router

Since I want to access to my openwrt router at my network's home I discovered I am forced to use OpenVPN. In fact the ISP which provides the internet connection doesn't allow his customers to be visible from the exterior (it is an Italian ISP named Fastweb).
The pc with what I want to access my router from the exterior is connected to the internet with a public IP and I can open the doors I want. For this reason I want to install the openvpn server on that pc.
What I would like to achieve is to see all the devices connected on the openwrt router (and the router itself) from the PC with the public IP.
For example, access the router web interface by simply writing 192.168.1.1 on the pc with openvpn server of which the local address is 10.0.0.2.
At the same time I would avoid to install the openvpn client on each device connected to the openwrt router. Is this possible? So reach the 192.168.1.3 pc from my openvpn server pc with 10.0.0.2 as local address, without installing openvpn client on the 192.168.1.3 pc.
Is this kind of operation called "bridging"? I am pretty new with openvpn, so I came here to gently ask if you can suggest me some configurations for the openvpn server and client.
What would happen if I restart the pc with the openvpn server? I mean does the router with openvpn client automatically reconnect as soon the openvpn server is again on?
I think an image is better descriptive of what I want to build:
    Really thanks in advance.

EDIT: AFAIK, the concept of "Server" and "Client" in OpenVPN only refers to which machine initiates the connection. It doesn't affect the resulting connection. That is entirely dependent on the configuration.
Garret wrote:At the same time I would avoid to install the openvpn client on each device connected to the openwrt router. Is this possible? So reach the 192.168.1.3 pc from my openvpn server pc with 10.0.0.2 as local address, without installing openvpn client on the 192.168.1.3 pc.
You only need the Client on one machine.
Garret wrote:Is this kind of operation called "bridging"? I am pretty new with openvpn, so I came here to gently ask if you can suggest me some configurations for the openvpn server and client.
If you setup a bridged VPN, the "OpenVPN Server" machine will get a second address within the 192.168.1.x network (for example, 192.168.1.20). It will use this address (via the VPN) to connect to the other hosts inside your network.
If you setup a routed VPN, then both address ranges (192.168.1.x and 10.0.0.x) will "become visible" at both ends.
If you only want the "OpenVPN Server" to be able to access your "home", then I would recommend a Bridged VPN.

    Yes.

  • I need help getting my Airport Extreme to connect to the internet

    Hello everyone,
I need some help setting up my AirPort Extreme. I'm trying to reestablish the express after a couple years of not using it. When I've set it up in the past, I've always had a hard time, and by accident it seems, I click something or turn something on and off, and I get it to work.
I have  a 802.11g second generation airport extreme. I'm able to connect to my network and I can move files back and forth from the laptop to the desktop, and vise versa.
I have a MacPro 2007, ethernet cable connected to my Linksys router, with two internal hard drives. One has OSX 10.5.8, AirPort Utility 5.6.1, and everything is up to date. The other has OSX 10.6.8, AirPort Utility 5.6.1. I also have a MacBookPro 2011, It came with Snow Leopard installed and I upgraded  it to OSX 10.7.4. I installed AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
All three systems can see and connect to my network, but will not connect to the internet.  The extreme's IP starts with 169.254.xxx.xxx, and there's an exclamation point on the wi-fi icon.
The set up I have now is a Westell DSL modem from Verizon. I have the ethernet cable from the DSL modem connected to the WAN port of the express and the other cable going from the ethernet port from the extreme to the ethernet port of my Linksys router 4 port switch, model #BEFSR41 V.3. I have reversed the connection to and from the extreme with the same result.
This is what I've done so far with no luck:
    • Unplugged the DSL modem, Linksys router, and the extreme for about twenty minutes.
    • Updated the Linksys firmware.
    • I have reset the extreme from the back and thru the AirPort Utility many, many times.
    • I've done a hard reset. I don't know if it worked. After the extreme powered back up, my network's name and settings were still the same. On a positive note, I'm now able to get on the web when I set the connection sharing to "Distribute a range of IP addresses" using the ethernet on my desktop. Before, I was only able to do so when the connection sharing in AirPort Utility  was set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
    Any other Ideas?
As always, your help is always appreciated,
    Rick

    Hi Tesserax,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Sorry about the confusion. My goal is to get online wirelessly with my MacBook Pro and be able to use the ethernet connection for my MacPro.
My DSL modem is a Westell WireSpeed model A90-210015-04, the Linksys router, and the AirPort Extreme.

  • Can't connect to wireless internet with Virgin

Installed Virgin media three weeks' ago and have not been able to use the wireless internet since. We have had 2 modems and 2 routers and spent about 12 hours talking to various people at Virgin but still does not work. Had AOL before with no probs. We have been able to connect it a couple of times but as soon as we turn off the mac, it loses the connection. Works fine on the modem with the ethernet cable. A lot of the time we can't even see the router on the airport but when we can and we try to connect, it just comes up with 'timed out'. The routers we have are D-Link and Netgear. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I'm just wondering if it is a problem with the Mac but we can connect to neighbours' unsecured networks. Please help!

thanks for your help, but sadly this did not work. even when i click the wireless airport icon on the top taskbar, no networks show up on the pull down menu. the only option i have is 'other.' shouldn't my secured network at least show up in the pull down menu, to which i provide the password?
is there any way to get this extreme card to work? has anyone else had this same problem with their iMac G5? this is ridiculous, thanks.

  • Can't connect to wireless internet with my airport extreme card.

hello, i need some help connecting to our wireless router. i do not have an airport base station, i am trying to connect to a third-party, secure wireless network. anyway, i've called apple, i've called linksys (the router company), and i am still using hardwire connected to the router. whenever i click the airport icon on the top taskbar, no networks show up. i have had my pc laptop in the same room as my iMac G5, and the laptop can autmatically connect to the network, but my iMac cannot. i am running out of options. i connect with a secure, wireless internet. its wep, whatever that means, and i've tried my user name and passcode numerous times, but to no avail. what do i do????

thanks for your help, but sadly this did not work. even when i click the wireless airport icon on the top taskbar, no networks show up on the pull down menu. the only option i have is 'other.' shouldn't my secured network at least show up in the pull down menu, to which i provide the password?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Just a hunch. The Sony and iBook may not be able to handle WPA2 Personal Security, which is the default Security setting of the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Change the setting for Wireless Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Update to save settings
    Any luck?

  • G5 with 10.5 unable to connect to the internet TCP/IP shows 194.454?

My G5 running 10.5 is having internet connection problems. I use ethernet and DHCP. I turned in my cable modem after having to unplug the power and cable to reset it each time i wanted internet access. The cable company gave me a new cisco unit. I was able to connect once with tech help from the cable folks. I called them again trying to connect. They suggested the problem was with the G5. I tried creating a new user account with administrative privildges, logging in on this attempting to connect, no success, and logging out. I trashed the phlist file on configurations and restarted. No changes. I am at the library computer and will checkfor any replies. Thanks.

Hi, the 169.254 IP just means it isn't communicating with the Router or Modem to get an IP, so assigns one itself.
Self-assigned IP address problem - My solution...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15624919#15624919
Though that may be for Wifi/Airport only.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.
    http://x704.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=6291&p=76975#p76975
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    Or...
System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the Ethernet Tab, set it to Manually & try 10BaseT Half Duplex, see if that connects after a reboot, then try Full Duplex.
Do you have another Ethernet cable to tryt?

I have just got back from Christmas holidays to find that my mac won't connect to the internet through the wireless hub or bt open zone. I have reset everything I can think of, restarted the router etc, etc, but with no success. Can anyone help? It's so frustrating as it was fine before I went away?

Hello j2534a, welcome to Lenovo forums!
Please ask your admin. I had the same problems. The firewall is the main problem me thinks.

  • I cant connect to itunes store, when i go to itunes help it says i am not connected to the internet when i am

i cant connect to the itunes store from windows. when i go to itunes help it tells me i have no internet connection when i am already connected to the internet.

I have the same problem. I can't connect to the store, and I can't update, and I can't stream music. Watch the discussions people post and you can see the same complaint, in various forms.
Some people have tried a netsh winsock reset: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3396443?start=0&tstart=0
and this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3259052?start=0&tstart=0 BUT a netsh reset can cause other problems and doesn't work for everyone.
