Help with my internal speakers

Yesterday my macbook was working fine... but ll of a sudden today I tried to play music and the speakers won't play. I try to turn up and town the volume as usual but there is a circle with an cross through it below the volume bar... Also, there is now a red light that comes out from where the headphone input is. Are my speakers broken or is there some special setting my computer is all of a sudden on?

Hi Charles: I haven't had this particular issue but, I have read about it quite a bit on here. The little switch inside the headphone jack becomes stuck in "Digital/Optical" mode. Most people have success by slightly poking the jack with a small toothpick or similar object. It would probablly be best to use something that was resistant to breaking inside the jack.
Good Luck

  • Anyone have trouble with the internal speakers?

    I had my internal speakers reset in May after an update download messed them up. NOw they aren't working again. anyone else having this problem?

    Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article.
    2. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    3. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and a red light is coming from it, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
    If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    4. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    5. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    6. Reset the NVRAM.
    7. Reset the SMC.
    8. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Help with Built in Speakers

    HI!  WE moved into a new home two years ago and it had five built in speakers in the living room.  We have never done anything with them becasue they are just wires coming out of a port in the wall.  I want to buy my husband a blu ray player for Christmas but I don't know if I can buy one with a connection for those or if I have to buy something else?? Please help!

    You will need a 5 channel amplifier/receiver to power those speakers, or one of the 5 channel surround blu-ray disc combo's sold by Best Buy.  If yo don't understand how such things are accomlished, shuggest you have Geek Squad come out after purchase and hook it all up for you.  Enjoy!

  • Please help with "500 Internal Server Error"

    Hi all,
    I get a "500 Internal Server" error when doing some processing with a Java program that makes HTTP calls into an application API deployed as WAR file on a OC4J midtier installation. The process works fine until I get a "500 Internal Server" after about 100 transactions. I can see reference to the 500 error in the Apache access_log, but that is it - no other references whatsoever in any of the logs (OPMN, OC4J, Apache, etc.).
    Can anyone point me to some sort of "500 error troubleshooting guide" or have any suggestions as to how to track the problem down?
    Thank you.
    Anton.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply! And yes its very frustrating. There is no other reference to this error - and I have the app and all Oracle components (oc4j & Apache) at their maximum log level.
    I have logged a SR with Oracle and off course their first response was that it "must be an issue with the 3rd party app". Needless to say the 3rd party vendor suggests I speak to Oracle...Anyway I am still working with Oracle on the SR.
    I have in the meantime upgraded to 9041, but I still get the same. I will try 9042 next. I have also started a "Plan B" workaround in my code...
    Thanks for the sympathy and any other other insights still most welcome...
    Cheers.
    Anton.

  • Help with my Internal Hard Drive!!! New to Mac

    Hello! I've only had my iMac for a few months now after switching from PC. I have a 1TB hard drive, which is plenty for my files and photos.
    It says that I only have 244 GB left on my internal. I don't know how this could be. I checked in all the folders that I have, music, pictures, documents, desktop, etc, all the file sizes add up to about 350 GB. What else is being stored in there? I tried to download Adobe Acrobat and it told me I didn't have enough space. What? how can this be?
    Do all my software and applications get stored on there too? I run Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom. I'm sorry if this is a stupid and obvious question. I'm not very mac literate yet.
    Thanks

    Yes, your entire system including applications is on that drive.
    To see where all the space is going, try Omnidisksweeper (free) http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/
    If there's excessive space being used by cache files or other background processes, come back to the forum and and someone will point you to a solution.
    Even if there is "only" 244GB available Acrobat should not be complaining. (But then, it is Adobe) I'd ask Adobe themselves about that one.

  • Need help with connecting internal cables

    I opened up my iMac to install a new superdrive and I am having trouble finding where 3 cables go. One cable comes from the internal camera One comes from the monitor and the third one is from a card . The first 2 are pins and the third one is a rounded plastic connector. Any ideas.

    If this iMac is from 2001, it is probably not an iMac G5. This forum category is for the iMac G5. So can you confirm the type of iMac. 2001 would probably make it a slot-loader iMac G3.
    Your options will depend on the type of iMac you have.

  • HELP ME PLEASE- Internal speakers aren't recognized

    So, here's what's wrong:
    1- Under sound in system preferences- output volume is muted and I can't un-click it
    2-Also under sound in system preferences no devices are found under output and input
    3-The sound symbol doesn't show in the top toolbar.
    Also I googled this same problem and a lot of other people say a red laser is coming out of the head jack on the computer, I however don't have this problem.

    +The MacBook Pros always seem to have this problem - especially when they get used as 'portable' computers - correction - I mean used at all!... My 07 and 08 MacBook Pro 17s both developed this problem pretty much right away - and I rarely have anything other than one of these $100 'special' cables connected (and I always get an Atari graphics card too!). I have been working from home - so I doubt that it has been connected and disconnected 35 times - and no more than 3 or 4 flings with a dirty head-phone-jack.... so the problem is more than 'dirt' or wear. I live In Mexico, and it tends to be humid and dusty simultaneously.... so where other people might have a 'stuck' switch because of using it, disuse can cause it too. The point is - its not 'user-error', it is a by-product of having one 2mm hole interfacing with those iconic-white Apple 1$ ear-phones, $5000 home stereos, and $50 000 sound-boards... i suppose a mini-dv hdmi would be good.... I just remember my happy disbelief when I discovered the 'little-red-light' on my new and silent Mac - I thought that it jammed to spite my already disappointed frustration with the mediocre connection options I was tinkering with (I know - read the manual)... I guess it was just get me to leave the gold-plated Radio-Shack crap to Dell!+
    +A sound card interface that is multi-channel headphone-jack AND optical is.... well, unheard of! It is fragile (optical tends to be... ) then again, when we get the best of both worlds - the real concern is that Apple will shelve it with the FireWire, and we will all be in the same spot as we are now - no sound, and trying to figure-out ways to convince each other that adapting our other equipment to pair with our wireless freedoms (airport express connected via - optical?) is w-a-y better that a sticky switched headphone jack that secretly held full spectrum optical Dolby deliverance!!!!+
    +Oh yeah... the 'FIX' - which I read about here and there (and has worked on two consecutive machines for me) is to keep the little socket clean, and lubricate the mechanism into functioning - as opposed to 'toothpicking-it'! Clean it with electrical contact cleaning solution (with the battery removed!). LUBRICATE the 'switch' to get it working ad to keep it that way. I used WD-40 on the 2007 mac... but the right stuff is an ultra-light 'dry' lubricant specifically for delicate contact applications - I am not sure, but I believe that the operation is at least partly electrical, so a non-conductive would probably exacerbate the problem - and would only work until it made it worse. The other tip is to use the right cables instead of paperclips and toothpicks. I found that the 3.5mm to mini toslink - the cheapest - seems to 'fit' the best. Also, the longer of the Apple earphones (iPhone 1st Gen?) kind of 'clicks' in - I put one cable in, then the other - then with the battery in, and the computer on I again rotated the cables - for me it seemed to start working when I had the cables connected to the amp at one end and the MacBook at the other+

  • I have an iMac running snow leopard. I have trouble with my internal speakers, I cannot adjust the volume without having an earphone plugged into the jack.

    The volume only works when I have earphones plugged into the jack, otherwise when I try to adjust the volume it has a circle with a cross. Ive tried restarting it with and without the headphones plugged in. However it does make that mac sound when turning on the machine before the apple logo comes on and takes me to the desktop screen. Is there anything I can do to fix this??

    I'm having a very similar problem.
    I've got a 2010 iMac that I've got hooked up to my Pioneer Elite via HDMI cable using the Moshi adapter.
    It's been working great for months, but today the audio began dropping out -- a fraction of a second, every six seconds or so.
    I installed the latest Snow Leopard update today. Does anyone think there might be a connection?
    thx!

  • No sound with internal speakers

    My HP dv1660se P/N et732ua laptop does not have internal speakers working?  Head set works but not with DVDs, no sound at all.  I just installed Windows 7 32 bit.

    Hi Kubotaboyz,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
    The Lenovo K450e does not come with an internal speakers.
    All Lenovo Tower PC does not have an internal Speaker and you must connect one either through the back Audio port or at the front on some units.
    You can check this K4 Model series Maintenance Manual to verify that the unit does not include speakers internally.
    Hope this helps

  • X201 Internal Speakers Stop Working

    I am having a problem with the internal speakers on the X201.  Basically, the speakers just stop working.  I could be in the middle of playing a song and the speakers pop and then go out.  I have to reboot the system for them to work again.  Headphones still work despite the fact they go out.
    I am thinking this is a fault with the IO Assembly board, but am not sure..  I have reinstalled Win7 clean with updated drivers and still see the same problem.
    Another interesting thing is I keep getting the disconnect/connect sound ( like you are plugging in a usb device ) at random times.  That always seems to correlate to the windows AUDIODG process.
    Any ideas?

    As you have already reinstalled the Operating System and drivers are also updated.
    I suggest you to update the BIOS and check

  • Force internal speakers

    Hey there,
    The pin of my speakers broke inside of my Audio Jack. My warranty has expired and I am not able to get the pin out.
    I would like some help on this matter.
    So, I tried forcing my mac to revert all sound through the internal speakers. Since there's no software out there that will do this, I'm a bit on my own here.
    I changed the preference files in library/preferences/audio
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
    This is what I changed it to. I'm assuming 1B,0,1,2:0 is the code corresponding with my internal speakers.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
              <key>0</key>
              <dict>
                        <key>current default output device</key>
                        <string>AppleHDAEngineOutput:1B,0,1,2:0</string>
              </dict>
              <key>501</key>
              <dict>
                        <key>current default input device</key>
                        <string>AppleHDAEngineInput:1B,0,1,2:0</string>
                        <key>current default output device</key>
                        <string>AppleHDAEngineOutput:1B,0,1,2:0</string>
                        <key>current default system output device</key>
                        <string>AppleHDAEngineOutput:1B,0,1,2:0</string>
                        <key>primary default output device</key>
                        <string>AppleHDAEngineOutput:1B,0,1,2:0</string>
                        <key>secondary default output device</key>
                        <string>AppleHDAEngineOutput:1B,0,1,2:0</string>
              </dict>
              <key>version</key>
              <integer>1</integer>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    I also made sure that _coreaudiod is added in the user permissions, through terminal. I gave it a READ ONLY status for coreaudiod, because I don't want it to change on reboot.
    Ofcourse I'm not sure wether 1B,0,1,2:0 is actually the right code for my internal speakers. There's no way to test this, other than trial and error. Ofcourse I'm not going to trial&error for hours over this issue.
    I rebooted (duh).
    Now when I go to preferences it still says for Digital Out - Optical Digital-Out Port
    How is this possible, since I have manually overridden it?
    Also, please do not respond with:
    - Go to apple store & get the pin out
    - Get an USB headphone
    - Get a new logic board
    -> I know these will get the problem fixed, but since my warranty is over I'm not persuading these options.
    Basically, I also would be thrilled to be able to solve this using my method. There are other people out there (I googled this thing for hours), who might be helped with a fix.

    +I need to enforce the use of headphones.+
    I think that's your answer. Headphones always connected to each iMac. Teacher enforcement. If need be, you could even epoxy the jack on the back of each iMac so the headphone jacks can't be removed.

  • Sound from external speakers, but not from internal speakers

    I tried searching as much as I could and couldn't find an answer....
    I always use my function keys to turn my volume up and down. It has worked fine until today, then all of a sudden, my internal speakers wont turn up or down when I use my function keys. The volume window comes up and below the volume level bar there is a circle with a line through it (like no smoking sign, but without the cigarette)which I guess leaves my internal speakers on mute.
    So i came home, and plug in my logitech speakers, and I can control the volume fine from my function keys. Then I disconnect my logitech speakers from my computer and I get the same problem with my internal speakers.
    I probably confused everyone but I guess a short version is my function keys wont turn on my internal speakers, and when I have external speakers plugged in, everything is normal.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

    If you look in the headphone jack, can you see a glowing red light? This happened to many people, it was an issue where a switch got tripped to make the computer to think that a pair of headphones or external speakers were plugged in. Try inserting a toothpick inside the headphone jack and gently probing around in there to try and turn off the switch.
    See here.
    And by the way, you don't need to bump topics that are only three hours old.

  • No sound from internal speakers, no microphone

    I'm having a problem with the internal speakers of my powerbook 17 inches laptop, when I turn on my computer I always hear the startup sound that all apple computers do, but there is no sound after that. The internal speakers and microphone are identified in the sound preferences panel, even if I connect my headphones the system identifies them but it doesn't play a sound. I don't know how to fix it, I already reset the PRAM, create a new account, etc. etc. yesterday I even format my computer and did a fresh start the I still hear the startup sound but no sound after de OS is working. Does anyone know if this could be hardware or software?? I there a way to fix it???
