Help with non-RAID HDD setup for 975X

I have built lots of computers of the years, but I have very limited experience with SATA. I am not wanting to use RAID, but I plan on having 2 computers hooked up to 2 of the 4 Intel ICH7 SATA connections and then on the ICH7 PATA controller I plan on having 1 HDD and 1 DVD+R. I plan on going in to the BIOS and setting SATA mode to AHCI (or should it be IDE?) and then "On chip Serial ATA" to Enhanced so that I get the use of all four SATA and the single PATA. Then I plan on disabling the Onboard JMB361. If I do this, will I need to install any drivers to get the system to see the HDD or DVD+R? When I boot up with a Norton Ghost floppy, will I need drivers on their to see the SATA and/or PATA drives?
If I ever decide to use the JMB361, I know there is a driver, but it seems that all instructions are to install it as you are installing windows (hitting F6). How do you install it if your system is already up and running? Is required for it to work properly, or is this just so that it can be seen when booting from CD-ROM or floppy? The manual that came with this board isn't very clear. It claims that the JMB361 can only have a master hooked up to the PATA connector, but all of the specifications I have seen elsewhere on the MSI website says that this board is capable of 4 total PATA devices (Master & Slave for the ICH7 and Master & Slave for the JMB361). That should not be a problem. Set SATA mode to AHCI and enable "Force Gen.II" to enable full speed for your S-ATA drives. These settings do not affect the P-ATA drive that is connected to the ICH7-IDE-Port. In order to install Windows XP SP2 properly on one of your AHCI-enabled-SATA hard drives you need to point Windows to a disk that contains the ICH7-AHCI-SATA driver (F6). No additional drives will be needed to use the P-ATA drive that is connected to the ICH7-IDE-Port.
AHCI mode is necessary in order to support performance features like NCQ.

You can savely disable JMB361 as long as there are no drives connected to the IDE-Port or the S-ATA-Port that belongs to JMicron-Chipset. JMicron drivers are only necessary, when JMB361 is enabled and drives are connected.

I am not sure how Norton Ghost Floppy works, because I never used it. If it boots into some kind of DOS-Mode or any OS-mode prior to Windows XP/2000 you might have a problem seeing the S-ATA drives if they run in AHCI-mode because there are no DOS-based ICH7-AHCI-drivers.

You should be able to install the JMB361-driver after Windows-Installation. It is required to assure the proper function of all drives connected to the JMicron-Chipset.
The IDE-controller (IDE2) that belongs to JMicron chipsets only supports one Master Drive. Only 3 IDE-drives can be hooked up to the mainboard simultanously.

My Mac is very slow and applications take a long time to load, especially Safari and iTunes. Please help.    I have run the Etrecheck report and these are results.

I would like help with setting up time machine for backup.

You will need an external hard drive (formatted for a Mac).
Then you plug it in and go to system preferences>time machine and select the external HD and turn it on.
The backups are automatic.

Course for help with X Raid

Hi All,
My boss has given my the OK to go on courses for get up to scratch with X Serve so I'm going to go on the Mac OS X Server Essentials 10.5 4 day course but I also want to know X Raid setup. Is there anything else that go on to help with this?

If you are thinking the course covers the XServe then you might be mistaken. OSX Server is not the XServe, its any apple hardware that meets OSX Server's minimum requirements. It may well be mentioned on the course?
The XServe is dedicated hardware built for Server use although you can install OSX Client on it if you wish. To that end and as far as I know there are no specific courses for hardware other than Apple Certified Technician. This used to be ACPT and ACDT before apple unified the hardware courses under one umbrella.
As for the XServe RAID - apart from the fact that it is a discontinued product and has been for the last 2-3 months - I don't think there has ever been a specific course for it? Leastways not this side of the pond. There are plenty of manuals/user guides available for both products either on the Apple website or on the disks that come with both models.

K7N2-ISLR, IDE3 for non-RAID HDD

Hello,
Can I use IDE3 to support a non-RAID drive? If so, how do I set this up.
IDE1 has two 40 GB drives
IDE2 has CD-RW and DVD
I'd like to add a Maxtor 120 GB drive, but can't figure out how to set it up.
Any help would be appreciated...b

Using IDE3 requires you to set it up as a raid device, but it's not a problem. Just connect the drive, boot up, press F1 when it asks to configure for RAID, and use RAID 0. It'll work just fine there.

Xp pro clean install on sata but can't get it access my old raid hdd setup

I got the Neo4 nforce4 platinum board and i originally setup 2 300gb maxtor ide hdds to raid which had my old xp pro setup but its seen better days and wasn't legit but i own officially now and decided to do a clean install to the 250gb sata hdd i have. install went well with the exception of loading up the nvraid and storage controller during install which for some odd reason wouldn't copy to the sata hdd but none the less everything runs correctly and after i reenabled the raid, thats where i have a problem.
now after it was set in the bios and rebooted, windows found it as an unknown device which i then set it to the legacy nvraid setup files and installed fine but the problem is that it shows the raid hdd but gives me no access (nor did it come up with the correct name for the drive that was set but the size given was correct) and looking at computer management, it tells me i need to initize a drive which happens to be one of the 300gb hdds thats part of the raid ??? so from seeing that i know theres something wrong so i'm asking what can i do to correct this and get access to the files I already have on it? i don't want to lose what i got on the raided hdds, just wanna burn off whats needed and then wipe the hdd's.

Guys, I Finally got it to show up correctly I first did a mistake with changing the primary ide to nvidia's driver in which caused a BSOD lucky enough last known good option worked and going back to device manager, i noticed it mentioned a dual ide under secondary ide which i thought i'd try the nvidia driver on. sure nuff, after a reboot it found the 2 hdd's as raid and installing the drivers for them gave me access like before
Thanks for the help guys tho theres still one last thing i need to go and change now that i noticed it: the northbridge fan died and i searched around the forum and saw a few ppl recomend but i'm not sure what i can really fit as a replacement due to my Evga 6800u + nvsilencer 5 and didn't see any of the topic mention someone with the same. any suggestions on that?

How can I boot to a fakeRAID -Raid0 set drive from a non-raid hdd

First of all, my English is bad and I hope I can explain it what my problem is. Secondly, I need your expert help with my problem right now.
I'll just layout some hardware information and some history before I start. Currently, my motherboard has 3 hdd controllers which are:
1) Intel - 6 ports --> contains 2 sets of RAID drives = 2 x 60gb SSD (boot drive) and 2 x 500gb HDD (data drive) both in RAID 0
2) Jmicron - 2 ports --> 1 port is used by the DVDROM
3) Marvell - 2 ports --> I don't use these ports as they are slow and are so bad - currently disabled in BIOS
HISTORY: Before, my 2 x 60gb SSDs (RAID 0) contained Arch 64 + Windows 7 64 with Grub as the main bootloader. I remembered having a hard time setting up intel fakeraid with Arch linux + Win7 dual boot before, but fortunately, with your help, I found the solution and I've been using it ever since until today.
NOW is kind of a different issue. I bought a new 60gb SSD (just one). I totally reformatted everything with my 2 x 60gb SSD Raid 0 and I decided to just use that exclusively for windows, still in RAID 0. My brand new SSD will ONLY have Arch64 on it. So I installed Windows 7 first on my Raid SSD set. I plugged my new SSD to the Jmicron port so I can take advantage of AHCI. I don't want to mix my new SSD to the Intel Controllers since its not RAID anyway. Anyway, I installed Arch 64 on the new SSD in the JMicron Port fine.
Now here comes the problem, I set the Jmicron port where the Arch is installed to be the primary boot in the BIOS (since GRUB is there) and I can't boot to Windows! It gives me an error that It can't find the target drive (Win7 in the Raid 0 - intel ports). I've tried modifying the menu.lst and trying so many combinations and It still fails. Of course, I can boot to Arch fine since the drive is independent. It looks like grub legacy can't boot to fakeRaid drives if its not installed on that same drive.
Can you give me advice on how to fix this issue?
Also, I was just thinking, is there a 3rd party Windows Bootloader, that can be installed in Raid 0, that can pick up Linux and boot from it. I was thinking of just making the Windows 7 as primary boot in BIOS, with a 3rd party bootloader, then just boot to Arch.

Yes, I have redirected my User folder to the D: drive.
I know that some shared components must reside on the C: drive; that's fine. I just don't have room for the entire installation on there.
The real issue here is that, when a drive other than C: is selected as the destination, the CS6 package installs into a broken state every time, out of the gate, on my system. Some components get installed to D: and some to C:, but the various components of the programs seem confused about what exists where, as shown below:
I select a folder on D: as the destination folder for the install, and here is what I get:
64-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the D: drive as specified, but attempting to start them results in a configuration error message stating that the program must be uninstalled and reinstalled, and lists "Error code: 1".
32-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the C: drive against what I specified. The shortcuts installed in the Start menu for the 32-bit versions point to the locations where these program files SHOULD be, on the D: drive. If the Adobe folder containing the program files is copied over to the correct location on D:, these programs function normally with no errors.
I have the 32-bit versions working by copying the program files from C: to D:. I just want to get the 64-bit versions working as well.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated; I'm really looking forward to testing the CS6 suite on my system!

What Is the Best Raid Array Setup for Photoshop?

I'm considering going to a Raid Array both at the Scractch Disk Level 2X Solid State 90GB Drives, and also at the stroage level 3X Hitachi 2TB HDD.
Which Raid Array setups should I use for each?

Something to consider:
An advantage of RAID 0 is that you get all the space of both drives, while multiplying the throughput.
While RAID 0 also multiplies the possibility of failure, you can offset that by buying high-MTBF enterprise class drives. The Western Digital RE4 is an example (and is the model I use in my RAID). Such drives are not really that much more expensive than their consumer-grade counterparts, and the difference is well worth it, IMO.
Do good backups - e.g., to a large external USB drive (e.g., Western Digital MyBook), and you'll be covered against loss of the entire array.

Help with mail users and setup 10.6 mail server bound to 10.8 Open Directory

We have a 10.7 Open Directory server which was upgraded from 10.6. We have had some Open Directory issues since the upgrade. I am manually creating a 10.8 server as a replacement for the 10.7 server. All settings for services are running as expected and we are ready to turn over to the new server except for a problem with the ability to receive email.
Setup in both the original and the replacement has the OD server with DNS running with a correct MX record pointing to our 10.6 mail server.
In the replacement OD server the mail users were created as network users, with no userhome, with access to the mail service, and email addresses given.
The mail server was unbound from the original OD server, bound to the replacement OD server without SSL exactly as with the original, and restarted.
Initially the mail service said that mail clients had the wrong name or password. Opened WGM 10.6 on the MAIL server and checked the OD records. They showed the mail users not having the checkbox saying they were set up to receive mail selected. Selected the checkbox to receive mail.
Now the mail client seems to connect to the server correctly but does not show the emails in the system for the users. It is as though there is no email and the account is brand new.
Unbind the mail server from the replacement OD server, rebind it to the original OD server, and restart.
Mail clients connect and receive the mail in the accounts as expected.
Any ideas?

I figured out what the mail server is doing. It has created new email stores for each of the new users. If we bind to the original OD it uses the original set of email stores. If we bind to the replacement OD it uses the new set of email stores.
I have tried to make sure that the userIDs match in each OD but that did not help.
The server is working for each OD. Does anyone know if I can tell the 10.6 mail server to use the old emails in the mailstore for the new user in the new OD?
If nothing else I can solve the problem by archiving the emails and copying them into the new user when running the new OD.

Help with my current hardware configuration for primere pro

Earlier this year I built a computer for video editing, I thought it was a decent build till I start running in to problems with render speeds, media pending for minutes after I open a project, playback issues etc. After reading post from multiple forums I realized build an editing rig a different type of beast and I need help to get the best out of my hardware
This is my current hardware

Crucial Ballistix Sport 16gigs DDR3-1600
EVGA Supernova 750watt bronze power supply
Hard drives-
C drive - 2 tb Seagate 7200rpm
D drive - 1.5 tb Seagate 5400( I think, it only read and write around 65mb)
F drive - 2 tb Seagate 7200rpm
I use adobe pp cc, after effects cc, Photoshop cc and want to use Speed grade in the near future.
I mostly edit AVCHD and dslr footage
Any suggestion would greatly be appreciated. I know my hard drives are not the best configuration. I want to redo that with a solid state and a couple of new hard drives.
Please let me know if any other of my components could be slowing down my computer.
also will my system run better with a internal or external raid configuration

Help with initial RAID config

Hello there,
I am setting up a law office to move from PCs to Macs. About 12 client workstations in two offices. There is a WAN VPN tunnel between the offices.
I have two questions. The first concerns the setup of the headless Mac Pro Server, which came with 4 one TB drives. My initial instinct was to make a single RAID 5 set out of these drives with a 200 GB volume for system, 1 TB for user and service data and ~500 GB for time machine. I realize I will have to install a monitor to run the RAID utility to accomplish this. Any advise/wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
My second question concerns the remote office. The office has about 50 Gig of current files for user work and I would like to implement full folder replication of this shared data between the two offices. I've looked into CCC/Bombich and he does not reccomend CCC for replication. Any ideas in that area?

I very much appreciate your description of TM. It confirms some of the worries I had about it. This is my first server deployment, outside of a lab. I was thinking the users could backup the clients using TM, and that the suitcases could be managed and eventually moved to off-line media--perhaps I am mistaken.
I intend to use CCC for the server itself, and manage and test those backups regularly. I have some familiarity with command-line UNIX stuff from previous lifetimes, and am willing to give rsync a try for folder replication. The office has a lot of data spread out in a fairly flat fashion so I wanted to do folder replication for performance reasons--for sharing documents between two offices--backup would be handled seperately. The remote office will have a 1 TB mini OSX server for this purpose and for a directory replica.
Update: The setup went fine (with borrowed monitor). 2.61 TB RAID 5 set! I have a few test accounts logging in on directory, and am managing to keep acocunt names from matching (the local vs. directory account thing). I have some more testing to do but so far directory users, with a network home at //srvr/volumes/usr/Users works great, at least if I wait five minutes or so after hitting "Create Home Now".
Add-on question: Is there a way to have network home folders sync with local/client home folders for performance reasons? MS does this with mapped folders and off-line synchronization. I may want to do this for some users that travel, and I will definitely need to do this for check-out MacBooks. This is something I have not seen covered in the Server Essentials nor in Support Essentials, or perhaps I skipped over it.

Need help with an advanced MIDI Setup

I have used Logic since v5.5 as a tape machine but haven't dived much in to MIDI. I have recently added the following hardware:
1) Novation Zero SLMkll control surface; hooked up via USB and seems to be functiong as it should.
2) M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 hooked up via USB; it i seems controlling virtual instruments as it should as well as the plug-ins I have assigned.
3) My Roland Juno Di synthesizer is giving me issues. What I play on it triggers its internal sounds as well as the virtual instruments in Logic. What I play on the Keystation also triggers the sounds in the Juno.
I have tried assigning different MIDI channels to the Juno and Keystation but still have the same results. I have set the Juno and Keystation as described in their manuals to no avail. The Apple Audio/MIDI Setup Utility will not let me change MIDI channels on any of it.
How do I get these things to work independently of eachother?
Any help would be appreciated!
PS; for my audio I am using an Apogee Ensemble and Duet.

Your username and password are stored in your keychain. You can remove the key from the keychain and the next time you connect you'll be asked to authenticate again.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, find the relevant key (sorted by server name) and delete it.

If you're usin the Finder as your FTP client, you can't. The Finder only supports read-only FTP. To upload files to a FTP server you need to use some other client.

Please Help Me Complete My Office Setup for My MacBook Pro

OK, here is what I am in the market for:
1. Bluetooth Keyboard
2. Bluetooth Mouse (preferrably rechargeable)
3. External LCD Monitor, DVI (20-24 inch, preferrably 24)
I am looking to spend around or under $600, if possible.
I have a MacBook Pro, 15", 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It is my primary computer. I run both OS X and Vista (via Bootcamp). I have been running Vista much more lately for business purposes.
Basically, I am looking for a setup for when I am sitting at my desk (as opposed to on the couch, for example, where I use my Rain Design iLap).
I am not opposed to having a wired keyboard or mouse either, but I thought bluetooth would save me the hassle of having to plug those in every time I sat down to my desk, in addition to the monitor and power plug.

I need help with java Time Zone Updater for Venezuela Time Zone

Hi,
I've run the latest Time Zone Updater (1.3.5) on JRE 1.4.2. It is supposed to support the time zone changes for Venezuela. The problem is that when I set my Windows time zone and run java.util.TimeZone.getDefault() it says that I am on GMT instead of GMT-04:30.
Am I doing something wrong?

I have found the solution for cases in which you cannot update your JRE to anything further than 1.5. You will have to create an extra entry in the Java tzmappings file as follows:
Venezuela Standard Time:90,90::America/Caracas:After doing this, you will have to create a new String Value in your Windows registry for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Venezuela Standard Time Key as follows:
Name: MapID
Value: 90,90
