Help with Optiarc AD-5630A causing sleep problems

I have an original Macbook pro 17" 2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 120Gb hdd, 2Gb ram.
The original superdrive fried, so I had to replace it. I picked up an Apple MacBook Air external USB superdrive and removed the drive from the enclosure to replace my fried one. I believe my old drive was a mitsumi, the new one is a Sony NEC Optiarc AD-5630A with firmware 1CHQ
Ever since I replaced it, here's what's happening, and I can duplicate the problem reliably.
If I put the computer to sleep (closing the lid or otherwise) with a disc in the drive, it becomes un-responsive after the computer wakes. Console logs show a constantly looping error:
8/24/09 5:53:23 PM kernel IOATAController device blocking bus.
This error will loop endlessly several times per second until I restart the computer. In the meantime, nothing can access the drive and the OS struggles with the sleep/wake cycle. Usually, ejecting the disc will result in the OS succesfully unmounting the volume, but the eject signal is not reaching the drive, so the disc gets physically stuck in the drive until a restart. The drive functions normally at all other times.
Thinking the new drive was faulty, and following Applecare's suggestion, I replaced it with an identical unit, (actually the manufacture dates are only a month apart, September and October of 2008) but the problem still persists. At this point, I'm thinking that it's either a hardware compatibility problem or an incompatibility with the firmware version.
This is a fresh install of OS X Leopard 10.5.8 on a repartitioned and erased drive. All software is up to date. I have reset the PRAM.
This drive is (was) used in the newish iMacs, and obviously, the MacBook Air USB drive. Some googling shows that there are different firmware versions for this drive.
Anyone have any insight? Please? Help?
Here's the log entry from sleep to wake to the error:

Anyone have any ideas? Anyone? If there's someone out there with a macbook pro using an internal optiarc drive, open system profiler and post your macbook pro model, what model number the drive is and what firmware the drive is running. Anyone? Please? (can you tell I'm desperate?)
aaron - was applecare of any assistance? It sounds like you've got a problem compounded by a vm. I can probaly help you out - I do mac IT work for a living. Does your IOATA error loop like mine does, or is it just a couple entries in the log?
To help narrow down the problem, shut down Windows and quit Fusion. Open console so you can watch the log. (make sure you aren't currently getting the IOATA error - if you are, restart) Then put your mac to sleep and wake it back up. See if you then get the looping error in the log. Whether the error is happening or not, make this behavior repeatable so you cna predict what's going to happen ie: restart, check log, sleep, wake several times so you know what's supposed to happen.
What we want to know is, does the error occur independently of Fusion, or only when fusion is running?

  • I think new mobo (MSI 770T-C45), is causing sleep problem in windows 7.

Hey all, I'm new and first time buyer of MSI mobo....   Finally got way from Biostar and Asus...lol   Anyways, I upgraded to a  770T-c45 and so far so good.  One problem been having is my PC wont sleep, monitor does but not pc.  Before I upgraded everything was fine, so my only isolated cause is to be the motherboard, I think..
I've tried everything in power options.....geesh...   I've gone into bios tried a few things there also, but still no change.  I wonder if the APS thingy is causing this???
Anyone having this problem or maybe help with a solution.
Btw...i have this XCLEO WInd tunnel tower, and it has 2 huge (super bright)  Blue fans on the side and it's really nice to get those to sleep along with pc..
    thanks everyone.

Did you set the ACPI standby state to S3?  If not, go to Power Management in the bios and change ACPI Standby State to S3.

  • Problems with itunes 5 download-causing other problems

I am having some problems with my itunes 5 download. It really messed up my Mac. Not only do not have itunes, Quicktime & Reason are not working either . ALL of the icons just bounce one time, (freeze) and then I have to force quit. I tried to upgrade to QT 7 but more of the same problems. Seems like since I started trying to upgrade, I'm killing my home studio. I can use any advice. I have tried many shut down and reboots and have reinstalled itunes 5 and Quicktime 7. I am unsure if I installed itunes 5 incorrectly or correctly the first time because I could not find very clear instructions. Please Advise! Thanks so much!!!!!!

If I were you, I'd first try just re-installing Quicktime 6.5.2 using the re-installer. Then do the thing with the Digidesign Core Audio Setup:
It will take care of the Quicktime problem, but not the ITunes problem. Re-Installing ITunes will not solve this. You must go to your Digidesign Folder and enter your Digidesign Core Audio Setup then remove ITunes. At this point ITunes should work fine.
Maybe re-installing QT 6.5.2 will help with Reason, too.
    best,

  • Please help with strange monitor/Lightroom 4 interaction problem

I bought a Dell Ultrasharp U3011 yesterday, and I'm now facing a very strange problem. It's sort of related to the common discussed issue of Lightroom's color management, but there is a twist here. I'll explain.
The monitor I had been using (and still have) was a Samsung SyncMaster 244T. I had no problems at all with it.
With the U3011, I've run into this problem:
-When I view files in Lightroom 4, the colors are muted and contrast low. The same files seen in Xnview, ACDSee Pro (with the color management turned off), Digital Photo Professional (colorspace set to sRGB), are much more vivid. In Photoshop, if I use the default color setting, it looks muted like Lightroom (I'm guessing because Adobe products have default color profile set to ProPhoto RGB), but if I set the color profile to the monitor's profile, it becomes vivid and matches the other software I mentioned. If I use any other profile such as sRGB IEC81966-2.1, ProPhoto RGB, Adobe RGB, etc, it doesn't match the other software I mentioned. This is strange because the other ones match each other because they are set to sRGB, but in Photoshop, even if I set the color profile to sRGB, it still doesn't match.
-In Lightroom 4, even if I use Soft Proofing, nothing changes. It's as if Soft Proofing is broken--it doesn't do anything, no matter what color profile I choose.
-Now, here's the twist. I didn't have any of these problems when I use the 244T. This leads me to assume that the problem is how the U3011 is interacting with Lightroom. I did a quick comparison of opening up the same image on both monitors in ACDSee Pro, and they looked identical. (At this point, I had the U3011's preset set to sRGB. This is the only preset that makes the U3011 look identical to the 244T).
Next, I did an experiment, and I was very surprised by what happened. This is what I did:
With both monitors as a dual display setup, I turned on Before/After comparison in Lightroom (made sure both version had the same setting and look identical by copying the After's setting to Before). I then moved Lightroom's window so that one photo is seen on the U3011, and the other shows up on the 244T. And OMIGOD, they looked different! Why is this happening? I've already established that the same image looks identical on both monitors when viewed with ACDSee Pro, but in Lightroom, they looked different on each monitor.
And then things got even more weird. When I dragged the Lightroom window fully to one monitor or the other, Lightroom actually started changing the colors right before my eyes as it responded to which monitor was displaying which photo! Lightroom was somehow interacting with the monitor in real-time. So if the Before looked muted on U3011 and the After looked vivid on the 244T, when I drag the whole window into 244T, the muted Before will stay muted for about a second or so, and then it'll suddenly change and become identical to After. And when I did the reverse (drag the window into U3011), the reverse also happened--the vivid After will stay vivid on U3011 for about a second or so, and then it would suddenly change and become muted. Lightroom was identifying each monitor's color profile setting and changing the images according to which monitor was doing the displaying, and when the images were split between the two monitors, Lightroom was slitting them into two different settings to match whichever monitor is displaying which side.
So what the hell does that all mean, and what can I do to get Lightroom to display the photos so that they look the same as on all the other software I mentioned (so I don't have to play the guessing game of editing the images, export them out to other software to check how they turned out). Also, remember that I didn't have this problem with the 244T--Lightroom displayed the photos the same way as the other software I mentioned. The problem right now is that the U3011 is somehow causing Lightroom to display the photos differently, and no color profile presets in the OSD control can make them match.
I need to solve this problem, or else my last resort would be to return the U3011 and try another brand/model and see if that helps.
    Any ideas?

Yes, that's basically sensible advice you got there (but I was more succinct ).
An important point that was mentioned over there is that you must not confuse document/source profile with monitor profile. They are both links in the color management chain, but they serve different purposes. The document profile defines the colors in a standard color space. The monitor profile describes the monitor's own native color space - its response to the RGB numbers it's fed. So one is translated into the other, by the application on the fly, through a normal profile conversion, and that way the colors appear on-screen as intended.
If those two profiles/color spaces are roughly similar, as they would be in the case of an sRGB document displayed on a standard gamut display - then you can get by without color management. It won't look too far off. But a wide gamut monitor changes the rules, because its native color space is not similar to sRGB, it's much closer to Adobe RGB.
Anyway, this is what color management is about. Any profile can be translated into any other. So in this context it doesn't really matter what color space the document is in - as long as you have a good monitor profile it will display correctly (within practical limitations). Lightroom is a sort of special case because its internal working color space is not one of the standard ones, instead it's a modified ProPhoto space with linear gamma. But the basic principle is exactly the same: source profile > monitor profile.
Just to go a little more in-depth while I'm at it: When you calibrate a display you actually do two separate things. You first calibrate it to a more or less standardized response. But that's just a linear one-dimensional correction. It does nothing about how color is actually reproduced, how red is red for instance. The calibration is global and affects everything system-wide because it's read into the video card or monitor hardware.
Then, once calibrated, a monitor profile is made. This is a full, complete and accurate description of the monitor's behavior, in three-dimensional color space. The precision level is much higher. This profile is used, by color managed applications like Lightroom and Photoshop, to display the image.
Other applications that are not color managed will simply ignore this profile, and send the RGB numbers straight through to the display, unmodified. With a standard gamut monitor (and an sRGB document) the difference won't be too dramatic and you may not notice it unless you look closely. But a wide gamut monitor will make the difference jump out immediately.

  • Flip4mac/quicktime causes sleep problems

I installed Flip4mac and when i try to watch YouTube the computer spontaneously goes to sleep. I uninstalled and it stopped, but it's caused me so much grief in the past that it started happening when i used quicktime among other things and i had to reinstall my system software.
Does anyone know why this would happen? Is it definitely Flip4mac or is something else going on with my system?
What would cause the computer to just sleep in the middle of multimedia?
I've had hardware checked and cleared of problems twice.

I don't believe there's anything in Flip4Mac code that sends commands to the system like that.
Do you have a "hot" corner set up for screen saver? Maybe there's something goin on there. Do you have a schedule set up for sleep in energy saver?
Try this simple test; create a new user account and head over to youtube. Then playback something and see what happens. If things work without sleeping, then there's something in your primary user account causing the weirdness.

  • Help with kernel and possible power supply problem

From 2 days after getting my imac I had my first Kernel restart.  Since then I have done everything apple has asked.  Ram resets and removing everything from the imac itself To find that it still had a kernel problem.  The error messages are Plugnplay or spinlock usually but have also been various ones such as  Kerneltask.  I have done a full reinstall of the operating system and only installed official apps from apple store, adobe flash and silverlight and next day was a kernel error for plugnplay.
The imac is currently in the shop for a look at but 2 phonecalls back saying they have had no evidence of errors. In fact its perfect for them.  The kernel is usually a few hours from turning it on but can go all day fine But they have had the imac almost a week.
So the only thing I can think of is if it works great for them is either they are really lucky or have a different electricity supply/cable.  So this leaves me thinking as stupidly as if it is working perfect for them then could it be a surge protector or power supply causing the random crashes?  Even something to do with the power lead itself?  I am really pulling at strings and going crazy because the only other thing I have been told to do is spend a week at a time just adding one thing at a time till the error shows itself so could be months and months.
i know kernel issues are historically hard to diagnose but any help would be great.  At the moment i have a £3000 paperweight on my desk thats only turned on a few hours a day  because I have no faith in it.

    Hi Joel,
For the external drive issue try resetting your firewire ports.
To do this, shutdown and disconnect the firewire devices from your computer and from each other if there is a chain of them. Now disconnect the power cords from both your computer and from the firewire devices. Wait fifteen minutes. Connect up again and see what happens. The FW ports on Macs have a 'self re-setting fuse" that requires all power to be removed for a period of time for re-activation.
You may also want to try a PRAM reset if that doesn't resolve the issue. Sometimes this can also be implicated in FW problems. Shut down. Hold down the command option p r keys. Now start up, keeping the keys mentioned depressed until the chimes have sounded three times.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Need help with MSI GT70 0NC-029NE bluescreen problems

I've just bought this new MSI computer, and downloaded a few programs like skype, steam, origins etc. When I open all of them at the same time, the bluescreen appears saying; memory management. The computer has 8gb ram, so it shouldnt really be a problem.
Would really be nice with some help on this as it is quite annoying

    Quote

The amount of memory is not the problem, but a fault with the memory, or the memory controller (in the CPU) could be the problem.
Is there a particular program that causes this BSOD?

  • Help with a Kernel Panic caused by NTFS filesystem

    Hello All,
I need  a little help trying to diagnose a reacurring kernel panic.
I originally thought it was being caused by Intego Virus Barrier, but that has been uninstalled for over a week now. On avergage, I get about 2 kernel panics a day. I have not been able to isolate why it panic's when it does. Looking at the Panic logs, I believe the issue to be with the Bootcamp partition, but before I go and reformat the drive, I wanted to check with the community to see if there was anything I can do.  I have not launched into Bootcamp in probably over 2 months, but the panics started about 2 weeks ago.
I have performed the Extended Apple Hardware test several times and there seems to be no issue.
The consistant item in all the logs is
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.4)@0x14da000->0x1539fff

    Hi Hatter,
Thanks for the response.  I actually did not intend to post this in the Windows Software Category. I'm not sure how it ended up there as I thought I was in the MacBookPro discussion area.
So, I am running Mac OS 10.6.7 and get these panics. I have neither VirusBarrier or Little Snitch installed.
The kernel extension com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is what I am assuming is the culprit as it is consistantly listed in the backtrace.
I have read both of the mentioned articles.  I do not seem to get the Kernel Panics when booted in safe mode, but I assume that is because the com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is not loaded when in safe mode and the Boot Camp partition does not mount (and cannot be).
So if Apple Hardware Test shows the drive as being healthy. The panic also mentions the active thread as mds. So I'm guessing that Spotlight is trying to index the NTFS partition and something in the middle is getting angry and causing the panics. Without re-formatting, is there any way to re-install just the Bootcamp extenisions for Mac OS X?
Or am I off base here?

  • Help with P5800 5.1 rear speaker problem.

    I have the Inspire P5800 5.1
When I test the speakers with the Surround Mixer control panel I get the test voice on all 5 speakers. If I play a DVD with 5.1 Surround (Spiderman 2) I get no sound from the rear speakers. I have Soundblaster Live. 24 Bit. I am using ATI All-in-Wonder to play the DVD.
What could be my problem? I beleive it should be a set up in the computer, I just don't know where.
    My computer skills are intermediate.
    Thank you for any help,
    Al

Using the Creative software (double click speaker icon in tray) then go to speaker setting make sure that you select 5.1 Speakers. If possible, try and download PowerDVD6 this software allows you change the speaker configuration to 5.1 etc...
You may also have this feature in ATI all in wonder. Check Audio options, make sure that 5.1 is selected or similar. It could also be that the ATI software does not support 5.1 only stereo 2 speaker.

  • Please, I need help with this 60GB ZEN Vision: M Problem... ASAP!

I had to format my computer earlier this morning, and I have to do it again soon, but not before moving all my music files to another computer thanks to my flash dri've. Here's the thing now: My ZEN Vision: M decided to have a firmware problem when I really can't do anything. I have to Reload the Firmware (I believe), so I can update it with the new one. The thing is, I'm not sure if there's a problem here, as I tried connecting it with the USB thing, and said it found no hardware. Alright so... I try doing the Realod Firmware thing, but the firmware doesn't detect the player, and I've already hit Reload Firmware. Now I don't know what's going on with my ZEN and I can't check things out nor can I go install the CDs for the programs/drivers and whatnot, because I'm in a bit of a hurry. I can do it all tomorrow once I get home but I just wanted to know what I have to do, since it's pretty much been quite a while since I last did a firmware update and I don't remember what to do, anyway.
Anybody willing to help? I'd appreciate it if this wasn't ignored like all my other topics in the last year, where I got little to no help at all. But I have been grateful of those who have helped me before. It's just been so long, really...

When you connect the player use REAR usb port if desktop. If laptop direct connect to usb port NO HUBS. & At least 50% battery charge on the player. Boot the player in Recovery /Rescue mode then do a Format>cleanup Then connect to computer to see if Windows loads the driver or "sees" the player. If it does then disconnect it &? Open the firmware file & on the player choose reload firmware The screen on the player will prompt you to connect via usb? connect it. Now the Autoplay window may open DO NOT CLOSE IT (ignore it) The firmware file should see the player choose the upgrade & let it run. Good Luck

  • CPU PLL overvoltage causes sleep problems

Dear members of the MSI HQ forum,
My computer doesn't wake up from sleep.
It does go well into sleep mode, but it will never get out. If I tell it to come out of sleep, the power LED stops flashing and is constantly illuminated (like it should), but the computer never gets out of the sleep. I just see a black screen in front of me and nothing works. The only way of getting out is to press the reset button.
The way to recreated this problem is by enabling CPU PLL overvoltage and select a CPU multiplier of 45x or higher.
I need to enable CPU PLL Overvoltage in order to boot into windows at 4.5GHZ (100MHz*45x)
I am using the latest 1.H bios.
Seems ASUS has already fixed this problem: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?276146-CPU-PLL-S3-Issue-FINALLY-FIXED...Standby-now-works-with-CPU-PLL-ON&s=91d5f46a11f7b7b4f521c7e5801c56f5
This issue has been addressed to MSI support. Does anybody else have this problem? Can it be fixed?
    My system:
    OS: Windows 7 64 bit
    CPU: i7 2600K
    Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) Bios 1.H
    Memory: Corsair XMS3 8GB dual channel 1600MHz

A few weeks ago MSI replied that they got their sleep working with PLL overvoltage enabled, MSI's Reply:
    "Below is my test configuration:
    MB: P67A-GD65 (B3)
    BIOS: V1.H
    CPU: 2600K
    Memory: 2pcs of G.Skill DDR3-1600 4GB (F3-12800CL9D-8gbxl)
    VGA: MSI R4870
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    BIOS settings:
press F6 to load optimized defaults, set CPU ratio at 45 and enable Internal PLL Overvoltage, enable XMP function to make memory work at 1600MHz, enable the option of Resume from S3 by usb device, save&exit setup.
I can wake up PC from S3 by my usb mouse. Thanks! "
I did just that, only difference I had to manually set my vcore to 1.32V to ensure a stable overclock.
However the problem still persist :( This concludes my motherboard is defective? Since they got it working...
Also I haven't had any reply on this board from users who also had this problem so it seems I am the only one.
MSI has not responded until since. I'm going to try and RMA it.
I've really had it with this board

  • Help with CS3 Adobe Version Cue Server problem.

Adobe Version Cue Server (CS3) doesn't display in the system prefs, niether will install a working copy off of Install disc after removed. There seems to be no way to fix this, In bridge it can't connect. All I get is a bunch of errors.

CS3 is known for the worst version ever of Bridge and also not supported any longer, you are using Bridge version 2 and current CC version is Bridge 6.
Also Version Cue has been discontinued per CS5
There is a blog post about a fix for a certain problem but not sure this is what you need (it is for a Mac), you can give it a try:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/03/a_tip_on_photoshop_mac_stability.html
Also keep in mind Bridge is not developed nor official supported for use over a network.
And in general, when something happens with Bridge first thing to try is resetting the preferences holding down option key (Mac) or ctrl (Win) while restarting Bridge.
But also I'm not sure you are in the right forum. Do a forum search about Version Cue using the Adobe Forums as source and see what result you get.

  • Need help with Mac Pro (2008) iCloud sync problem

I am using a Mac Pro (Early 2008) with multiple drives and partitions, some of which I use for various software testing.  I wanted to have access to the same data on various partitions, so I tried to use iCloud to store some Pages files. I found that in the Mountain Lion Partition that I normally use, that the document data ( Pages, Numbers, etc) would not upload to the cloud... just showed as waiting. All other iCloud Data ( Calendar, Address Book , etc) did sync fine. If I accessed iCloud using a browser or looked on iClould using the iCloud Manage function in the iCloud system preferences, I could see all the files.  I then found that I did have another Mountain LIon partition in which the data syncing all worked.  Other testing showed that if I did a clone of the working partition using SuperDuper, the clone worked properly, but if I did a clean install of 10.8.4, the document data did not sync.If I did a clean install and used the migration assistant to migrate from the working partition, it still did not work.  I later found that if I replaced the top level Library file in a non working partition with the one from the working partition, that I could make the non working partition sync properly. I have not been able to find a subset of the folder that would make things work, but have not tried every combination. At this point my only conclusion is that there must be a bug in the 10.8.4 installer. Apple has been working on this for a few weeks, but has not found anything and cannot duplicate... but they are testing with iMacs.
Is there anyone with a Mac Pro (2008) who can do a clean install of 10.8.4 on a partition and see if they can still access their iCloud data (Pages, Numbers, Etc). If so that would probably confirm the otherwise unexplanable problem.

  • Help with Nokia Ovi Suite - Phone Space Problem

Hello. I need some help. I have a smart phone Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. Well, the problem is, when i connect my phone to the Nokia Ovi Suite, and try to get some themes on my phone, i can't, because it says, that i don't have enough space on my phone. And when i check memory on my phone it shows: Left space: 2,5 mb And on memory card it says: Left: 2,5 gb. Why can't i then download anything on my phone anymore? Please help.
P.S.: Themes are not too big, they're only about 1 or 2 mb.
    Using Nokia 5530 XpressMusic

The problem is the lack of free space in your phone memory. Even though the memory card has plenty of free space - some content require still space in the phone's internal memory. And in many cases it requires more space than the actual file (if the file is decompressed in the device, it takes easily twice the size of the original package).
Freeing space in the device's internal memory should help.
