Help with PDF export

Hi,
I'm a beginner with InDesign, and I need help badly. I've gone through lots of threads with no solution yet.
Earlier today I exported an InDesign file to PDF and parts of the document with black text went to gray. It's been that way since, even in the original InDesign document. I don't know if it's just a color thing. If I change the color to red it simply looks like a "light" red. When I'm  scrolling down the page it looks black, so long as I'm holding down and scrolling. Does anyone have a solution to getting my "light" font to be rich with color again. All of my black text is gray!
Thanks in advance.

No, I didn't make any changes. How do I find the opacity?
Does the opacity not show when you scroll? It may very well be the opacity, because it looks the same even in PDF. But then it doesn't explain how some parts look like opacity has changed and then some parts look completely normal.
EDITED TO ADD: THANK YOU SO MUCH. I FIXED IT.
It took me hours. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

  • Fonts Not Embedding Consistently with PDF Export - Inconsistent Fix and Unknown Cause

    I have had ongoing problems with PDF export from FrameMaker. Sometimes the correct fonts do not embed in the PDF and Times New Roman is substituted. The problem appears and disappears and is causing me a lot of lost time and frustration.
    I am running FrameMaker 9.0 fully patched on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have seen people complain about this issue and am familiar with the suggested fixes. However, the exact cause and solution eludes me because the problem continues to recur and I am only able to recover with guesswork and workarounds.
    Initially I did the following:
    ACROBAT PDF SETTINGS
    - In the printer properties for Adobe PDF settings I turned off the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts."
    ACROBAT DISTILLER SETTING
    Under "Font" Settings I changed the following:
    - Under "Settings/Font Locations" I added the font folder for Technical Communication Suite 2.0 and made sure all the fonts existed there and in the Windows default font directory.
    - Under "Settings/Edit Adobe PDF Setting/Fonts" I changed the following options:
                - Selected "Embed all fonts"
                - Under "Embedding" chose "Always Embed" for the target fonts.
    I tweaked these settings for hours and got no results. Then I rebooted and the problem had magically disappeared. I fixed the issue in the same way on another machine and the results were permanent and I was just happy to finally have it fixed, But this time it didn't last.
    I should note that upon reboot, when I used the stock "PDF Job Options," the correct fonts still embedded, leading me to believe that the fix had nothing to do with the changes I made to Distiller settings.
    After reboot I generated PDFs with the correct fonts embedded. Then I shut down FM, but left the system running. The next morning I opened FM again and the same problem occurred.
    So I rebooted again -- and the problem disappeared again. I therefore thought maybe the issue fixes on reboot but recurs when you shut down FM and reopen. So I shut down FM again and reopened, but it is still working fine for the moment.
    I verified that the Adobe PDF settings under "Printers & Devices" that I turned off (Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts) remained correctly unchecked through all these changes.
    I would really like to know why this happens so I can resolve it permanently and avoid more lost time.
    Thanks in advance,
    Douglas

    The common theme I'm seeing here is that the setting edits you make in
    Distiller through the FM "Save As PDF" option don't seem to take effect.
    Do you know if that is true or could you elaborate on the notorious nature
    of this method for me?
    >
    There are too many potential and transient problems to list. The only thing
    I can say is that I've been an active member of the FrameUsers listserv
    (http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers) since FM version 6.0,
    circa 2001, and probably 95% of the PDF problems reported there have been
    fixed simply by using print to Adobe PDF (or to Acrobat Distiller in older
    PDF versions), instead of using Save as PDF. Common advice there has always
    been to avoid Save as PDF and even some Adobe employees have recommended
    against using it. It doesn't matter which FM version.
    The once-busy FrameUsers listserve has been fading away, recently, as this
    new Adobe forum software allows reading via e-mail, and attachment of
    screenshots.  Even if you look around on this forum now, you'll probably
    find that there are two main fixes for issues with PDF. One is NOT using
    Save as PDF, which seems to fix a whole bunch of issues. The other is the
    use of a Windows hotfix to squash a Windows OS bug that causes dropped
    characters in PDFs.
    In the rare instances that someone has issues with printing to PDF, they are
    almost always related to errors in settings. Or occasionally someone can't
    embed fonts because they are trying to the embed the virtual fonts that come
    with their printer driver instead of fonts that have actually been installed
    on their computer. (The fonts are hard-wired on their printer, so the system
    can use them but not embed them.)

  • Trouble with PDF Export from ID CS6

    I am having the following problem with PDF exported from an ID CS6 document. I have a couple of pages where a b&w photograph is partly covered by a non-wrapping text frame and in that text frame there is blue text. In ID it looks like this:
    It also looks like this in the exported PDF in Apple Preview.app and for most of these pages they also look good in Acrobat Pro. But two are giving me trouble. They look like this:
    and sadly, they also look that way when Ingram tries to use them. I export using the typical print format PDF/X-1a:2001
    I have a minimal ID document that shows the problem with 3 such pages, one with the problem.

    Select one of the troublesome objects and open the attributes panel as well as the effects panel.

  • Problem with PDF export and embedded font (characters disappear)

    Designer: Crystal Reports 2008 SP 2
    Engine: CR4E 2.0 SP2 (runtime_12.2.203)
    Hi there!
    we found a problem in the pdf export. It seems like there would be a problem with the embedded fonts, the problem is as follows:
    Rpt file with, for example only a text box which contains the german string " Änderungs Schlüssel ".
    Export the Rpt file with CR4E to a pdf file.
    When we open the pdf file in Adope Reader 8, the text appears to be correct,
    but if we print the PDF file from the Adope Reader, the text changes to " nderungs Schl sselu201C,
    here we are missing ther german umlaute.
    When we open the file for example with an alternative PDF reader like Foxit Reader, there they are also missing.
    After i found some posts here in the forum, there are people facing the same problem, since i couldn't find a solution in the forum, we build a little workaround for it that works for us.
    For all of you that have the same problem here the workaround:
    We used the IText JAVA library, this jar can can help as to fix the PDF file so the text is displayed correctly.
    Here the code:
    ReportClientDocument doc = new ReportClientDocument();
    doc.setReportAppServer(ReportClientDocument.inprocConnectionString);
    doc.open("C:\XY.rpt", OpenReportOptions._openAsReadOnly);
    //... database logon,.....
    InputStream inputStream = doc.getPrintOutputController().export(ReportExportFormat.PDF);
    inputStream = PDFHealer.heal(inputStream);
    //... write the stream some where

    The helper class using IText:
    import java.io.ByteArrayInputStream;
    import java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import com.lowagie.text.Document;

    import com.lowagie.text.pdf.PdfContentByte;
    import com.lowagie.text.pdf.PdfImportedPage;
    import com.lowagie.text.pdf.PdfReader;
    import com.lowagie.text.pdf.PdfWriter;
    public class PDFHealer
       public static InputStream heal(InputStream in) throws DocumentException, IOException
          try
             ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
             PdfReader reader = new PdfReader(in);
             // we retrieve the total number of pages
             int n = reader.getNumberOfPages();
             // step 1: creation of a document-object
             Document document = new Document();
             // step 2: we create a writer that listens to the document
             PdfWriter writer = PdfWriter.getInstance(document, out);
             // step 3: we open the document
             document.open();
             // step 4: we add content
             PdfContentByte cb = writer.getDirectContent();
             int i = 0;
             while( i < n )
                document.newPage();
                i++;
                PdfImportedPage page1 = writer.getImportedPage(reader, i);
                cb.addTemplate(page1, 0, 0);
             // step 5: we close the document
             document.close();

             out.close();
             return ret;

  • Indesign CS5 - Problems with PDF-Export

    Hello community,
    we do have a problem with Indesign CS5 and exporting data into PDF. It is about that logo on that white surface, which doesnt come along with the rest after the pdf-export. What we did was: We created that white surface in Indesign itself, put an effect on it with the Indesign effect gallery and then imported the logo in the surface ... the logo itself is .psd data. So, if we export it into pdf like that, it is just dissapeared. Does anyone have had a similar problem and what can be done about it?
    By the way ... if you put, for example, a simple backgroundshadow on a picture ... done also with the Indesign effect gallery, then you get just a white surface instead of the shadow, after the export into pdf. It does maybe correlate with the other problem ... not sure. Any suggestions?
    Thank you very much for your help and kind regards ...

    I would create the entire logo, including the white background, in Illustrator, save as PDF and place that in ID.

  • Terrible Graphic Quality with PDF Export from FM9

    I'm using FM9 unpatched on Windows XP Pro.
    I cannot get the PDF export to work properly with graphics. Everything else looks great in general, but the graphics lose quality, both upon import into FM and even more so upon PDF export.
    I have tried every option for importing, both working with native files (ex. .ai) and with JPEG or other format exports, as well as importing the files themselves directly and importing by reference.
    I have also tried tweaking the PDF "Image" settings, removing any and all compression to see if it would help, which it did not.
    In the end, the best results actually come from imported JPEG files, which are a bit blurry, but (relatively) usable, considering the alternatives. The Illustrator files I want to use are just awful, they are completely bitmapped upon export to PDF.
    It is also worth noting that I do not encounter this problem when using the FM drawing tools. The output of those graphic files on printer and in PDF is excellent, vector-quality art.
    I find it unusual that I am having this problem and see no other mention of it in the forums. It is causing serious pain and delays on my project, so if someone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Douglas

    First and foremost, you mention using FM unpatched, but you don't mention any specific reason you haven't applied the patches, can you elaborate on that? What version are you running, then?  The latest version is 9.03 aka p250, as shown in Help > About.
    There were several fixes to PDF generation in both the .02 and .03 update, so that would be the #1 recommendation.
    Second thing is to tell us
    1)  how you're creating the PDFs, are you using Save As or are you printing to a print file,
    2) what printer do you have set as your default printer (in FM) when you create the PDF

  • Help with PDF settings in InDesign for Newspaper print

    Hi I work for a newspaper and until recently we have done the newspaper layout in Pagemaker. We finally changed to InDesign. I am now at the point where I have to export to PDF. What would be the best to use, export as PDF or printing to postscript? I'm not exactly sure what PDF setting to use if I do export it? With Pagemaker I used to print to a
    Postscript printer

    I suggest you ask the person that will recieve your file, what suits him or her best.
    If it's a PDF exported from InDesign, you could even ask for a definition file to import (see screen shot for the menu item to select), so that you don't need to make all settings yourself, but get them correct from the start.
    Best regards

  • Help with pdf tasks

    Hello,
    I am trying to automate a couple of specific tasks with pdf files but I am having some trouble. At my job we are printing files to pdf but afterwards we must go back and edit the pdf files. Basically what we need to do is this (in order):
    1) Rotate the first 'one to three' pages. The first page(s) need to be rotated counterclockwise but it can be 1-3 pages that need this. All we know is that they always appear first. These pages are very similiar in content so I was thinking about making the program search for a keyword common to those pages then rotate it if it finds that keyword. That way we can ensure that its only rotating the pages which need to be rotated.
    2) The last 3 pages of the document need to be moved to the top. These documents vary in number of pages so I cant just tell the program to move certain pages numbers to the top. All we know is that its always the last 3 pages of any document that need to be moved to the top. Also, just for clarification is another way to reorder pages in Acrobat besides dragging them with the mouse?
    Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Fazal

    Both of these could be implemented using JavaScript, perhaps using a batch sequence. #2 is easy, and #1 may or may not be possible/reliable based on the actual content of the document.
    For #1, a script is able to loop through the words on a page to search for one or more words. If found, it can look at the position of the word on the page, and if it meets the position criteria, use the setPageRotations document method to rotate the page.
    For #2, just use the movePage document method to move the last three pages.
    If you need help with the code, consider posting in the Acrobat Scripting forum. Include more information for #1 if you do.

  • Help with PDF Generation

    We are currently evaluating LiveCycle ES to potentially convert numerous Pro/E 3D drawings to PDF. Unfortunately, I am having a difficult time finding the proper resources to help achieve this. What we would like the process to do is:
    1) Take a Pro/E file, and apply a forms template
    2) Add an "Exploded View" animation for the 3D drawing (such as what can be generated by Adobe 3D Reviewer)
    3) Expose the "Bill of Material" to the template fields
    4) Save the generated PDF to a defined folder
    5) Perform these steps for a "watched folder" for when new drawings are submitted
    In LiveCycle Workbench, I have been able to read a Pro/E file and apply our template. But I cannot find information on how to achieve the other steps.
    Could somebody please point me to specific resources and/or samples that would help with this? Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply.
    If I'm understanding you correctly, option 1 probably won't work for this situation, because we're working with existing ProE drawings -- hundreds, if not thousands, of them. So, they don't want to go back and add the exploded view. Unless you're saying that we could use javaScript to generate the exploded view and BOM from the ProE files?
    Do you know of an example (or other resource) that describes either of the options you outlined? Could you explain a little more?
    Thanks again!

  • Help with PDF Javascript calculation involving checkboxes

    Hello Everyone,
    I have a PDF Form, and need help with a calculation.
    For the sake of simplicity, Lets say I have 5 fields. FSA1 and FSA2 are checkboxes. TotalClaimed1 and TotalClaimed2 are text fields which allow only a numerical input.
    The last box, FSA_Total, should add the value from TotalClaimed1 if FSA1 is checked, and it should also add the value from TotalClaimed2 if FSA2 is checked.
    The code is malfunctioning, however. Something is causing it to add to the total every time the box is checked. Its almost like the checking off of the box is what causes the addition.
    It seems like the code is being read as "When the box is checked, add the value to the total", so each time the box gets checked, it adds to the total again.
    and it should be "IF the box is checked, add the value to the total" so if there is a value in the field, and the box is checked, that value is passed on to the total; and if the box is not checked, the value is ignored.
    Can anyone spot what might be causing this? Code is below.
    var claim1 = parseInt(this.getField('TotalClaimed1').value),
        claim2 = parseInt(this.getField('TotalClaimed2').value),
        fsabox = parseInt(this.getField('FSA_Total').value);
    if (this.getField('FSA1').value == 'Yes') {
        fsabox += claim1;
    if (this.getField('FSA2').value == 'Yes') {
        fsabox += claim2;
    event.value = fsabox;
    Thanks
    Thisguy1234

    This is a custom calculation script for FSA_Total, correct? The code is working correctly, it's just not what you want. Assuming this is a custom calculation script in the FSA_Total field, it should be something like:
    var sum = 0;
    var claim1 = parseInt(getField('TotalClaimed1').value, 10),
        claim2 = parseInt(getField('TotalClaimed2').value, 10),
    // Add field values if corresponding check boxes are selected
    if (getField('FSA1').value !== "Off") {
        sum += claim1;
    if (getField('FSA2').value !== "Off") {
        sum += claim2;
    // Set this field value
    event.value = sum;
    Why are you using parseInt, exactly?

  • Need help with PDF/X-1a

    I am beyond frustrated here so I hope someone can help me!!!! Ii have Adobe 8 Standard and I can't find the PDF/X-1a in my distiller. I need this particular preset to upload a book cover. The website won't accept any other format. The only thing I have in my distiller is PDF/A-1b.
    Does anyone know where I can get the correct distiller? Everyone I know with Adobe 8 has the PDF/X-1a in their options and they don't remember having to do anything special to get it.

    Assuming you have Acrobat installed, it would not hurt to verify compliance after the document is created. With the doc open (on my vesion 9) Advanced > Print Production > Preflight > PDF/X Compliance > Verify compliance with PDF/X-1a  hit analyze
    Note that a document must have a Title in the Title box under Document > Properties (ctrl+d) to pass X-1a and, for whatever reason, analyze and fix cannot add this.
    And I'm far from the resident expert here..

  • HELP - lost pdf export presets?!

    Help! This morning I began work in ID and suddenly discovered that my long list of PDF export presets (which I use for work daily) was simply gone. I have only the default list - screen, print, press, etc. These are very complex presets that I need on a daily basis to produce files for my clients - I really need them.
    What happened?? Nothing is different about today; I went through my standard work process this morning. Nothing traumatic happened to ID. I repaired disk permissions and restarted yesterday, but that was a standard maintenence procedure for me - nothing unusual.
    This morning I noticed that the files in the user>library>pref?Adobe InDesign folder all showed as being modified at 8:30 this morning, when I started work.
    I back up my files and can probably (I hope) recover any missing file - but where exactly is it? I can simply replace the entire preference folder in my user folder...

    Just checking: I think this is what I do now: open Export PDF dialog; set all options,
    and click Save Preset... in bottom left? they then all appear permanently under File>PDF Export Presets and in Export PDF dialog. Is that what you mean?
    (don't mean to bug you, Buko; I appreciate all the help as ever. just trying to collect all new info.)

  • Help With Pages - Exporting To PDF - PHOTOS BOTCHED

    Hey guys, would really appreciate some insight to this.
    I created a report for my board in pages and included photos. It looks great but when I export to a .PDF, instead of seeing a page of 4 different photos, it is all the same photo! WHY???? I have no idea why..... It is the weirdist thing.
    Now, the document is like 140 meg since the photos are a bit big, so I am telling pages to export to a 'good' .pdf instead of a 'best' since it will make the file size smaller. If I were to make the pics smaller and then put them into the document, would that work? Your help is appreciated since I don't want to do this unless it works. It will take tons of time.
    Intersting note though, when I export to word or 'best', the pics are fine. Something weird is happening when it is making the .pdf smaller. Any thoughts?
    Thanks all.

    You're probably using sections. Is there a little triangle over page 8 in the Pages palette? That means a section starts there. Select the page and go to Numbering and Section Options in the Pages palette menu. Remove the prefix.
    You can also export using absolute page numbers if you use a + (plus) in front of the page. If your book's pages are numbered: i, ii, iii, 1, 2, 3 you could export as pages +1 - +6.
