Help with photo import quality in iMovie!

The resolution of the iPhoto (5.0.2) pics once dragged into iMovie (5.0.4) severly deteriorates on my iMovie project. The photos are 21 inches widecrystal clear JPEGS in iPhoto, Preview and Photoshop, except once dragged onto iMovie they look blurry and pixely. My digital camera is a Sony 7.2 (shot pixs at 5M)
Playing project footage on full screen in iMovie looks this way as well. So it is not just the import still shot on the clipboard that looks bad.
How do I fix this problem to get clear quality ?

Create your iMovie project in a high quality format (choose the highest one possible) and then the pics you import will be imported in a high quality. iMovie automatically adjusts the quality of your pics and movies based on the quality of the iMovie project you are creating.
I'm not sure what you mean by "a high quality format", hlokty. Are you referring to the iMovie Playback preference, which lets you pick one of three playback settings?
If so, note that preference does NOT affect the quality of the imported image. It has no affect on the quality of project clips like video, photos, or anything else. The preference only affects playback in iMovie itself. Low quality improves the playback smoothness. High quality improves the playback image.
If should be noted that iMovie NEVER shows us all the quality that's there, for either video or photos. That must be kept in mind when viewing photos imported to iMovie. It's important to not judge quality by what you see in iMovie. iMovie is a video editor, not a video player.
There are many Topics here discussing photo quality. To find them, search for words like "blurry" and "jaggies".

  • Help with photo quality

I hope help is available but know fixing this is a long shot. Ten yrs ago I made a video using photos only. I do not remember what program I used to create it-probably something pc based. I have a copy of this video in Itunes captured as MPEG-2.
I dragged it into a FCP7 project I am creating and it plays without audio and the photo quality is not good.
To fix the clip, I tried 2 methods:
    1. I compressed it using best 'DVD quality for 90 minutes 'This restored the audio however the photo quality is still poor.
    2. I tried using the program MPEG streaming. It did not improve the photo quality.
I know the indiv. photo quallity is pretty good becauseI have these photos in IPhoto.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
    Thanks, Sandra

    Thanks Mtd..is it Meg?.
I was pretty sure that was the case, but actually wanted to use some of it because it is for the same client and thought it would be fun to use that file. As I think of it, you gave me an idea. Maybe I will start with the poor quality file which the client knows well and morph it into a clear (new file) with those photos....Could be fun
    Thanks again

  • Photo image quality in iMovie

Hi ... I am attempting to create an iMovie that will include photos and video footage.
I read that the best presentation quality for the photos would be achieved creating a slideshow in iPhoto and exporting the slideshow, and importing the resulting Quicktime movie into iMovie. This would bypass issues created during the iMovie image rendoring process.
I just did a brief test run using the above steps. The image quality in the Qtime video was not very good.
Am I missing a step in here someplace?
The final show will be played on a large screen, so I am very concerned about image sharpness.
    Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean by media folder, a folder of JPEG files is a media folder as is a folder of audio files.
    More Info:
When dragging any folder of high quality photos to iMove it has to change it from stills to video. Apples and oranges; a conversion takes place. I just experimented by exporting iPhoto file of high resolution photos to QuickTime changed the QuickTime resolution from 640 x 480 to 1280 x 800 then imported it into iMovie. Then I exported iPhoto full resolution pictures to my desktop and then dragged them to the time line. These photos have text in the pictures. The original photos are 2581 x 1836 when I played the slide show from iMovie I could not tell the difference from the QuickTime movie that I placed in the time line and the full quality photos exported to a folder on my desktop then dragged to the same timeline as I did the QuickTime movie. However the QuickTime movie played independently in QuickTime was far superior to the QuickTime Movie played in iMovie on my computer. My monitor is set at 1680 x 1050.
Text in iMove will show Jaggies when viewed at close working range as I mentioned in an earlier post you must view iMovie at the proper viewing distance because your slides have been converted to video. Drag one of your slides to the desktop you will see that it becomes; example > Still 10.dv > in QuickTime format, no longer a JPEG file. Once you export your slide show to QuickTime you don't have the editing ease of moving your pictures position, changing slide duration, music etc.
For others to view your movies you will eventually have to burn your slide show in iDVD unless you are using your computer and a projector. An hour long iMovie can become a very large file about 10 GB but will play very nicely from a computer. Burn that movie to iDVD it will become about 1GB.

  • FCE import quality vs. iMovie

Is FCE capable of capturing/importing video at an improved quality level than iMovie 6?
I understand the superior editing & functionality aspects of FCE, but am trying to see if using FCE also gives you the ability to produce a higher quality video. FYI, I will be working with a bunch of MiniDV tapes.

I went to FCE because I was disappointed with the DVD final results of iMovie 06 at its best setting (at least what I think is the best). Thinking Imovie was just a poor factory add-on program I got FCE and on my initial tests with the same footage imported then exported through their respective programs, I saw great differences in the picture. Viewed back on a good Panasonic Gaoo 37 inch TV.
Smoke or fog, trees, anything with a lot of detail seemed less vibrant with iMovie.
I am open to opposition on these findings as perhaps something wasn't set right, but to date I have not been able to encode a DVD from Imovie as well as that from FCE
I suppose this is off topic since the question was of import quality, not export.
    Cheers

I am creating a photo gallery using Spry.  I used the Photo Gallery Demo (Photo Gallery Version 2) on the labs.adobe.com website.  I was successful in creating my site, and having the layout I want.  However I would like to display a caption with each photo that is in the large view.
As this example uses XML, I updated my file to look like this:
    <photos id="images">

The images when read into the main file (index.asp) show the images in the thumbnail area and display the correct image in the picture pain.  Since I added the pcaption field to the XML file, how do I get it to display?  The code in my index.html file looks like this:

  • Help with photo albums Please

Hi, i really need some help with my pictures, I've only got a very basic understanding of how my phone works and have somehow put a load of albums on my phone when i plugged it into the computer-I want to delete some of them off the phone but cannot work out how to do it, when i plug my phone in i can find the photo tab but cannot actually see the pictures and can't see any delete button!!! Please can someone help me, basic explanations would be gratefully recieved xxxx

The photo sync is one way: computer to phone. To remove photos, synced to your phone, remove the check marks next to the albums/folders under the photos tab in itunes & hit the apply/sync button. They will be removed from your phone. You cannot delete photos that were synced to your phone, directly on your phone. The easiest way to manage photos synced to your phone is to create albums or folders on your computer. Move whatever photos you want on your phone into these albums/folders & then select them under the photos tab in itunes to sync to your phone. You can then remove or add photos to these various albums/folders on your computer & the itunes sync process will update your phone every time you sync.

  • Dates not coming with photos imported from shared libraries

My partner and i both have macs, we both use iphoto. Usually we use the shared photo library features to exchange photos so that we both have all the photos we want.
The problem is that the dates don't follow. I'd actually like to see all the metadata imported (faces etc) but i'll live without that but the dates is a real problem.
I'm pretty sure they used to come with the photos imported from shared libraries, not sure why they stopped... Ideas?

How are you sharing the Libraries? How are you reading the dates?

  • Need help with Photo Stream

I am having issues with Photo Stream and iPhoto when the iPhoto library is stored on a Drobo NAS. When I access the library stored on the NAS I see Photo Stream on the menu and when I access the library I get a  message that tells me I need to switch Photo Stream to this Library. I did select to switch Photo Stream over to this NAS library and I did get a big blue button that is suppose to start Photo Stream but when I push it nothing happens.
I have contacted Apple support and they said that this is the way Photo Stream works and recommended that I submit a request to have this feature added at Apple\Feedback, if it is something I would like to have. They said if enough people request this feature they will add it but that Photo Stream does not currently support an iPhoto library stored on a remote NAS or shared network drive.
My question is has anyone found a work around for this?  If you would like to have this feature added to Photo Stream can you please submit your request to Apple so they will add it, perhaps a little sooner than later?

I checked today and this issue has been solved with the latest iPhoto update from Apple. I am running iPhoto 9.2.3 on my Snow Leopard Server which is sharing a Drobo NAS. I am also running iPhoto 9.2.3 on my MBP running Lion and I can now open my iPhoto Library and Photostream will work with the library and even automatically create events and move all my Photostream pictures into these events within the Library. I can then close the Library on my MBP and open the same Library from my Snow Leopard server and the new Events are there and I can move them around with no problem. Thank you Apple for this fix.   Even though I cannot deal with Photostream directly from the Snow Leopard server this is a very eligant work around.

  • Help with Photo booth

IS there a way that I can turn off the flash that happens when i take pictures with photo booth?
I was also wondering if the camera records video?
    Thank you!

    Hello Sarah CMac
To disable Photo Booth flash, hold shift while you click.
BTW, holding option disables the seconds countdown. You can use both at once if desired.
Photo Booth 2 that comes with Leopard adds video recording with "effects" and sound. If you do not want to upgrade to Leopard, you can use WebcamTweaker for "effects" videos or any of the apps that can record video or movie clips from this list of Some Applications You Can Use With iSight for video without Photo Booth's "effects."

  • Help with photos that can't be imported

    Hello all,
Every time I open iPhoto there is a message saying new photos have been found and asking if I want to import them to the library. I click "yes" and the same message is shown again.
After that, I get a message saying the photos have been added to the folder Recovered_Photos_NN.
The problem is that the folder is empty and that no photos are added to any library. I already have up to Recovered_Photos_25 folder with no photos in it and every time I open iPhoto a new folder will be created.
I think this happened for the first time once I connected my iPad 1 to the iMac.
I have never been able to identify what 24 photos they're talking about. It's always 24 photos.
Can anyone help me to find what's going on?
    Thanks,

    - quit iPhoto and all other open applications
    - in the top menu bar, select "go", then home.  Open you pictures folder.  Hold down your "control" key on your keyboard, and click on your iPhoto Library.  Select show package content.
    - locate and drag to trash, the following:
    - the "auto import" folder and the "import” folder
    - launch iPhoto

  • Help with very advanced slideshow using imovie?/idvd?/iphoto?

I am trying to create a more advanced slideshow for the first time, and I need some advice on how to manage my project and the order in which to use (if to use) the various applications (iphoto, idvd, imovie). I've been in all of them trying to figure out the best format to use, as each of them have certain features I'd like to incorporate into my slideshow. It gets a little confusing since this is all new and I just don't know how to approach it. If anyone has experience with all of these programs, maybe you could give me some suggestions on how to get the most out of what is available. Here is what I'd like to do:
I have a 4 minutes song from itunes which I want to use with a slide show of about 30 pics (whatever is a reasonable amount).
FX features (a sound effect at beginning before song and maybe some of the cool video affects on a few of the photos (in addition to Ken Burns )
Ken Burns zoom like an animated slideshow
Use a theme (preferably one from idvd as it seems to have more to choose from.
Since it is only one slideshow, I don't need the confusion of all the zones to import clips into, so I'd like to keep it simple. While I want to keep it simple, I'd like to have some sort of preview in the beginning with the cool stuff imovie offers like the title floating in etc..
So my problem is, I just don't know how to get all of these affects into one slide show because I'm training myself on bits ad pieces of each one, but I don't where to start (magic imovie, magic idvd, start from scratch idvd, or just slide show to import to idvd). I 've tried them all, but I can't figure a way to get more affects as each one has something different. Not sure if this makes sense, but I've trying so hard to get this right (for a Xmas gift) and I'm going in circles trying to keep it all straight. So, if this is possible, I would really appreciate help as to the best way to approach it. Thank you.

    Hi n
You have one day more for Your project than in Sweden as Santa has to start
somewhere and home is close. (We start at about 15.00 24 of dec).
I would start with - if the music is bought from iTune store (a fix for a known
problem) to save it out as an audio CD (.aiff) else it will look OK till You try
Your DVD disk = No sound.
Then I would start a new iMovie project and from media button select photos
and drop one start photo from iPhoto down into timeline. Then I would import
the music from the new CD.
Cont to put photos one at a time into timeline. Change duration so that they
match the tempo in Your movie.
    Transitions
    Effects
    etc.
Save from time to time to keep safe.
When the "movie" is done - close iMovie and open iDVD and drop Your movie
project icon into this - or - use the import function in iDVD.
DON'T Share/Export from iMovie to iDVD - it will destroy Your movie by a bad
rendering work. iDVD does this so much better.
I don't know any way to use the "themes" in iDVD into iMovie. Sorry
    Merry Christmas !!!
    Yours Bengt W

  • Help with Photo Slideshow

I would like to create a photoslide show with Premiere Elements 4. I did once in the original version many years ago, but I am having trouble find the best way to create. Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to do this. I know how to import the media, but had trouble creating transitions for the photos without having to create one between each photo. I also want to import music. Rather than set the time of the show, I would like Premiere to choose the photo length based on the time of the music in the show.
Any assistance, or if someone could point me in the right direction, would be great.
    Thanks for your assistance.

I have an article on creating slideshows using both Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements, MD. It's available in the members are at Muvipix.com.
The basics are that you (a) want to make sure your photos are no larger than 1000x750 pixels. This gives you best performance with highest photo quality. And (b) you import the photos into either program and either simply assemble the stills on your timeline or use the automatic Slideshow Creator. To use Create Slideshow in Premiere Elements, gather all the photos in the project media panel, right-click and select Create Slideshow.
My article discusses in greater detail all of the options and which might be the best methods and techniques.
http://www.muvipix.com, a site set up by a number of experienced Premeiere Elements users with some support from Adobe, offers one of the most friendly, helpful forums on the web and includes a large number of complimentary products including tutorials, tips, DVD templates, stock footage, motion backgrounds and sound effects. And, for a small annual fee which we use to keep the site up and running, you can have unlimited downloads from our ever-growing library of high-end tutorials, tips and products.

  • Need help with FCE import (1920x1080)

I'm new to FCE and unfamiliar with the settings and format.  I bought the software in order to use one third party filter on a particular four minute project.  I thought this would be easy (I'm not even editing the show in Final Cut, just applying a filter.)  But  I've spent literally days watching tutorials and reading discussions trying to get settings and file formats right for a simple four minute project.
Here's my situation.  I created a video in Photo to Movie.
I exported it with the following settings:
    HDV 1080i
         Dimensions: 1920 x 1080
         Video
              Compression: Apple Intermediate Codec
              Quality:  Medium
              Frame rate: 29.97
              Preset: HDV 1080i
         Sound:
              Format: Integer (Big Endian)
              Sample rate: 48.000 khz
              Sample Size: 16-bit
              Channels: Stereo (L R)
Initially I was working in version 4 and could only work with the 1440 x 1080 sequence settings.  The film looked great in FCE but rendering was giving me poor image quality.  I thought this might be a problem with sequence settings.
I just updated to 4.0.1 so that I could work with 1920 x 1080 dimensions.  In Easy Setup I selected AVCHD  Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60.
But when I drag my Quicktime movie into the browser it's listed as 1440 x 1080.  I'm puzzled as I'm sure I formatted it at 1920x1080 and if I
use command+i on the .mov file it shows as 1920x1080.
I'm completely confused.  I have MPEG Streamclip and Iskysoft media converter if that's useful.
Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong?
In the initial export of my Photo to Movie project?
    In my import into FCE?
    Both?
I'm far behind my deadline and really need some help.
Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.

Hi Tom, you are right, of course.  The inspector says:
    Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062)
    Millions 16-bit integer (Big Endian)
    Stereo (L R)
    48.000 kHz
    FPS 29.97
    Playing FPS (Available while playing.)
    Data size: 2.66 GB
    Data rate: 89.58 mbits/s
    normal size: 1888 x 1062
    current size: 1888 x 1062
I won't ask you to explain why I fed in one resolution and ended up with another or why the file shows up in the  preview menu as being 1920x1080.  Obviously I don't understand these basic concepts.
The more immediate question is--which settings should I be using to import into FCE (or should I be converting this to something else before it's imported into FCE?)
Finally, when it's time to export (after applying the filter) which settings should I use?
I need a high quality version that can be put on a DVD and also something that can be used on Youtube. (The more urgent need is for the You Tube file).
I truly hate to bother you with all this, but it's remarkable how many different online tutorials I've consulted and they all differ.  I've probably spent thirty hours this week trying different approaches (insane).  Each asserts that this or that format and setting is the "best" but no one seems to agree.    And none have entirely worked so far.  (I even had a professional come to my house this morning to help and he told me all my settings looked fine--obviously not true.)  Ultimately I need to understand the underlying concepts (and should have invested my time this way) but in the meantime, I urgently need to get this project out.
I saw in other posts that you have written about FCE.  Is there a particular title I should pick up to get a good overview of these concepts?  And, in your opinion, does it make sense to study FCE when everything seems to be moving toward the Pro X software?  I ask these additional questions, in part, for the benefit of others.  I'm sure I'm not the only layman out there who is struggling with this learning curve.  Thank goodness for individuals like you.

  • TS3634 Help, how to importing video in iMovie'11

I am using the Sony Handycam HDR-HC 9
    OS X 10.8.4, MacBoo Pro early 2011
    iMovie'11
I want to import the video shot with the Handycam into iMovie. The cable I am using is iLink to FireWire 800.
When I put the camera mode in to edit/play and I plug in the cable I excpected to be able to import the HDV into the iMovie.
It does not work, and I must say not any more.
About 6 months ago I did import  video from the same camera to the sam iMovie Aplication on the same MacBook Pro
I could chose the import from and select the Handi cam etc. and I cpuld control from iMovie the handycam.
Recvently I wanted to import clips from the camera to my computer again and I was unableto do so.
In the iMovie app. I am unable to select the camera, in the view finder of the camera it only shows HDV in when I plug in the iLink cable.
The omly thing that has changed in the last 7 months since i last imported movie clips is OSX updates and iLive updates.
    could this be the reason?
If so how can I correct this and import clips again from the camera.
Will realy appreciated if anybody can help me solve this problem.
    Thank you.

    Ok
I tried that but no go.
In the handy cam viewer as soon as I plug in the cabe it shows HDV out iLink and immediatly changes to HDV in iLink. I assume that the cable is right than.
I have no possiblety jet to check the cable but it is only 6 months old and not used much.
The port on the MacBook pro is ok I used a firewire 800 external drive and it shows up an I can browse the disk.
