Help with photo quality

I hope help is available but know fixing this is a long shot. Ten yrs ago I made a video using photos only. I do not remember what program I used to create it-probably something pc based. I have a copy of this video in Itunes captured as MPEG-2.
I dragged it into a FCP7 project I am creating and it plays without audio and the photo quality is not good.
To fix the clip, I tried 2 methods:
1. I compressed it using best 'DVD quality for 90 minutes 'This restored the audio however the photo quality is still poor.
2. I tried using the program MPEG streaming. It did not improve the photo quality.
I know the indiv. photo quallity is pretty good becauseI have these photos in IPhoto.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks, Sandra

Thanks Mtd..is it Meg?.
I was pretty sure that was the case, but actually wanted to use some of it because it is for the same client and thought it would be fun to use that file. As I think of it, you gave me an idea. Maybe I will start with the poor quality file which the client knows well and morph it into a clear (new file) with those photos....Could be fun
Thanks again

  • HELP: How do I print a photograph from my computer (not from a memory card) with photo quality ?

How do I print a photograph from my computer (not from a memory card) with photo quality ?
Is there a software that enables me to let the printer know that what I am sending to print is a photograph and not, for example, a document?
I sent a photograph to print from I-Photo and from Photoshop and the printer prints it like a document, that is to say, quickly and with very poor quality...for what is a PHOTOGRAPH.
I bought my print yesterday in Spain and Monday I must turn in a printing job at work. Pleas help. (Today is already Saturday.)
    Thanks

In OSX when you go to file and print you will usually get a window that pops up with print settings.
In 10.6 it may only show you the printer to use, and the preset to use, but you can click the square to the right of that with a triangle in it to view more options.
From here there is a drop down for paper type/quality, where you can select photo paper, and a higher quality, then go to print.
The following link will actually show screenshots of these settings and how to navigate them:

  • Help with photo import quality in iMovie!

The resolution of the iPhoto (5.0.2) pics once dragged into iMovie (5.0.4) severly deteriorates on my iMovie project. The photos are 21 inches widecrystal clear JPEGS in iPhoto, Preview and Photoshop, except once dragged onto iMovie they look blurry and pixely. My digital camera is a Sony 7.2 (shot pixs at 5M)
Playing project footage on full screen in iMovie looks this way as well. So it is not just the import still shot on the clipboard that looks bad.
How do I fix this problem to get clear quality ?

Create your iMovie project in a high quality format (choose the highest one possible) and then the pics you import will be imported in a high quality. iMovie automatically adjusts the quality of your pics and movies based on the quality of the iMovie project you are creating.
I'm not sure what you mean by "a high quality format", hlokty. Are you referring to the iMovie Playback preference, which lets you pick one of three playback settings?
If so, note that preference does NOT affect the quality of the imported image. It has no affect on the quality of project clips like video, photos, or anything else. The preference only affects playback in iMovie itself. Low quality improves the playback smoothness. High quality improves the playback image.
If should be noted that iMovie NEVER shows us all the quality that's there, for either video or photos. That must be kept in mind when viewing photos imported to iMovie. It's important to not judge quality by what you see in iMovie. iMovie is a video editor, not a video player.
There are many Topics here discussing photo quality. To find them, search for words like "blurry" and "jaggies".

  • Help with Photo Slideshow

I would like to create a photoslide show with Premiere Elements 4. I did once in the original version many years ago, but I am having trouble find the best way to create. Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to do this. I know how to import the media, but had trouble creating transitions for the photos without having to create one between each photo. I also want to import music. Rather than set the time of the show, I would like Premiere to choose the photo length based on the time of the music in the show.
Any assistance, or if someone could point me in the right direction, would be great.
    Thanks for your assistance.

I have an article on creating slideshows using both Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements, MD. It's available in the members are at Muvipix.com.
The basics are that you (a) want to make sure your photos are no larger than 1000x750 pixels. This gives you best performance with highest photo quality. And (b) you import the photos into either program and either simply assemble the stills on your timeline or use the automatic Slideshow Creator. To use Create Slideshow in Premiere Elements, gather all the photos in the project media panel, right-click and select Create Slideshow.
My article discusses in greater detail all of the options and which might be the best methods and techniques.

  • Problem with photo quality when exporting interactive pdf

    Hi guys!
I made a simple pdf with before/after retouching samples with photos overlayed, changing on mouse rollover.
When I export it as an interactive pdf (on lossless jpeg quality), the photo quality on the final pdf looks like a jpeg on 40% quality, really bad. Rollover works.
When I export it as a pdf for print on high quality - the photo quality in the final pdf is flawless but rollovers dont work.. (I checked "Interactive Elements: Include Appearance) but still nothing..
Pleeease help cause I can't find a way. I just need the rollovers to work and to have the photos in the best quality possible.
    Thanks,
    Jelena

If you haven't already you need to change the resolution as well.  Like this:
72ppi is the default which in theory should be fine for on screen viewing, but play around and use what works for you.

  • Help with display quality (LCD TV)

I've hooked up my Mac mini to my Samsung 32" LCD TV via HDMI cable.
The overall quality is just far from desireable and is taking away all of the fun from using this new mac.
I set the resolution output to 720p, which is what the TV supports. So that's good.
I played slightly with the Contrast and Brightness on the TV settings.
But I must be missing something. Although the image is sharp, it's very difficult to read from 6ft away, pictures look terrible (seeing the same picture on a different computer and monitor is so much more revealing), and the display is bad for everything basically.
Please help with any settings suggestions or perhaps a detailed guideline for my setup.
I started to configure a color profile on the display settings but the results weren't that great and I reverted to default. Too many subtle changes. My colorblindness probably doesn't help.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the response.
It's the latest Mac Mini with 2.5ghz i5, AMD Radeon HD 6630M, and 8GB RAM.
I am familiar with the "Just Scan" setting under picture size on the Samsung TV.
I'll look for the digital noise reduction.
Are there complete guides with recommended settings for different setups? Or maybe even general, that would help me here?
    Thanks.

I am creating a photo gallery using Spry.  I used the Photo Gallery Demo (Photo Gallery Version 2) on the labs.adobe.com website.  I was successful in creating my site, and having the layout I want.  However I would like to display a caption with each photo that is in the large view.
As this example uses XML, I updated my file to look like this:
    <photos id="images">
                <photo path="aff2010_01.jpg" width="263" height="350" thumbpath="aff2010_01.jpg" thumbwidth="56"

                   thumbheight="56" pcaption="CaptionHere03"></photo>
    </photos>
The images when read into the main file (index.asp) show the images in the thumbnail area and display the correct image in the picture pain.  Since I added the pcaption field to the XML file, how do I get it to display?  The code in my index.html file looks like this:

  • Help with photo albums Please

Hi, i really need some help with my pictures, I've only got a very basic understanding of how my phone works and have somehow put a load of albums on my phone when i plugged it into the computer-I want to delete some of them off the phone but cannot work out how to do it, when i plug my phone in i can find the photo tab but cannot actually see the pictures and can't see any delete button!!! Please can someone help me, basic explanations would be gratefully recieved xxxx

The photo sync is one way: computer to phone. To remove photos, synced to your phone, remove the check marks next to the albums/folders under the photos tab in itunes & hit the apply/sync button. They will be removed from your phone. You cannot delete photos that were synced to your phone, directly on your phone. The easiest way to manage photos synced to your phone is to create albums or folders on your computer. Move whatever photos you want on your phone into these albums/folders & then select them under the photos tab in itunes to sync to your phone. You can then remove or add photos to these various albums/folders on your computer & the itunes sync process will update your phone every time you sync.

  • Need help with Photo Stream

I am having issues with Photo Stream and iPhoto when the iPhoto library is stored on a Drobo NAS. When I access the library stored on the NAS I see Photo Stream on the menu and when I access the library I get a  message that tells me I need to switch Photo Stream to this Library. I did select to switch Photo Stream over to this NAS library and I did get a big blue button that is suppose to start Photo Stream but when I push it nothing happens.
I have contacted Apple support and they said that this is the way Photo Stream works and recommended that I submit a request to have this feature added at Apple\Feedback, if it is something I would like to have. They said if enough people request this feature they will add it but that Photo Stream does not currently support an iPhoto library stored on a remote NAS or shared network drive.
My question is has anyone found a work around for this?  If you would like to have this feature added to Photo Stream can you please submit your request to Apple so they will add it, perhaps a little sooner than later?

I checked today and this issue has been solved with the latest iPhoto update from Apple. I am running iPhoto 9.2.3 on my Snow Leopard Server which is sharing a Drobo NAS. I am also running iPhoto 9.2.3 on my MBP running Lion and I can now open my iPhoto Library and Photostream will work with the library and even automatically create events and move all my Photostream pictures into these events within the Library. I can then close the Library on my MBP and open the same Library from my Snow Leopard server and the new Events are there and I can move them around with no problem. Thank you Apple for this fix.   Even though I cannot deal with Photostream directly from the Snow Leopard server this is a very eligant work around.

  • Help with Photo booth

IS there a way that I can turn off the flash that happens when i take pictures with photo booth?
I was also wondering if the camera records video?
    Thank you!

    Hello Sarah CMac
To disable Photo Booth flash, hold shift while you click.
BTW, holding option disables the seconds countdown. You can use both at once if desired.
Photo Booth 2 that comes with Leopard adds video recording with "effects" and sound. If you do not want to upgrade to Leopard, you can use WebcamTweaker for "effects" videos or any of the apps that can record video or movie clips from this list of Some Applications You Can Use With iSight for video without Photo Booth's "effects."

  • IMovie and iDVD help with low quality

I am working on a large project that consists of 480 still photos that will be set to music with motion, etc that is 1.3GB total. When I import them into iMovie the project quickly becomes 15GB+. I then exported it full quality to iDVD which compressed it to around 2.5GB. My issue is that the quality is bad...wavy type pictures, etc. Is this because I have too many pictures and the project is too big? What should my settings in iMovie be to get the best quality project. The photos are high quality shot with a digital SLR and look great by themselves so I know it's not the pictures themselves. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!!

There are a heap of threads on how to improve the quality of your photo's from iMovie to iDVD. Any reason you are using iMovie for a slideshow? Do you have video in the project as well? I say this because iMovie is essentially a video editing tool, rather than a slideshow application. I use either iPhoto, FotoMagico or iDVD direct to make my slideshows. ALL much better quality than from iMovie.
My first project was a still photo slideshow made in iMovie and I was really disappointed with the end product (pretty much as you described it). It was recommended to me to try a couple of things.
    1. Import your photo's with KB turned on (although this seemed to make my photos worse - it seems to work for some).
    2. DON'T EXPORT or SHARE your iMovie with iDVD. Rather, save it and close iMovie. Then open your iDVD project and your finder where you will find your project listed in the movie folder. Drag it's virtual icon and drop it onto your iDVD menu. I found this worked particularly well for me. If you DO export or share with iDVD make sure you don't allow it to re-render things (it asks permission). That also may make a difference.
    3. When you eventually go to burn your disc, save it as a disk image (the option just under the burn button in iDVD). Once it is saved to disk (this will take a while to render, so perhaps do it over night) then you can view it in your DVD player and if all is ok, burn it through Disk Utility or Toast at a speed of 1x or 2x.
Hope these ideas provide some help.

    > When confronted with a situation like this, I would ask the client what he/she preferred. With women, especially, they'll almost always opt for a softening effect to downplay wrinkles and at least a nudge or two on the double chin. For the most part, people don't have a professional portrait made to see what they look like in the mirror.
Quite often it seems a digital photo actually accentuates problems, to where they are more noticeable in the photo than in person. For me, the goal is to minimize distractions while enhancing that which would compel.

We know Wades specialty is architectural photography, and Ive seen some of his past work that really amazed me. I dont pretend to understand his need to do what he does in threads like this, but I trust he will get it worked out internally.
    > Consider the source, Linda. Wade's people photography skills are even worse than the stuff he's "supposed" to be good at. I'd hire you to shoot my family portrait over our self-professed expert any day.
Phil, It means a lot to hear you say that. Thank you! The image you posted is powerful. It gave me an idea for something I might like to do with a recent photo that has similar skin tones. Your advice is insightful and worth keeping. I agree with Donald it that it would be a pleasure to watch you work your magic.

Thank you for saying that Ann. An honor to hear that from you. My work doesn't come close to the quality portraiture of Phil, Phil (my friend from Alabama), Ashley, and Peter, but I do what I can and try to improve as I can make time. I'm grateful for all the help I've received from you and the others with photography over the past 5 years. I trust Patricia finds it equally helpful.

  • FCP Novice needs help with video quality and FCP 5!!

    Hi,
I have a real problme that I cannot seem to fix. I think its because I am doing something really wrong!
I have a Sony HC42E MiniDV Camcorder which by default records video in full widescreen. I recorded several tapes this way and have now begun trying to edit them in FCP 5.04 (Tiger 10.4.6). Whenever I log and capture my clips they appear to be fuzzzy and unclear on the Mac monitor whilst being totally crisp and sharp on the camcorder viewfinder. I tried capturing using the DV PAL 48Khz Anamorphic Preset which keeps everything the right size (the final output needs to be true widescreen and not with black bars added) but the resulting video on screen is blurry and bitty. I then tried capturing using the DV PAL 720 x 576 normal preset and the video is a little clearer on the screen (for both presets I have chosen lower field dominance) but when I play back it plays back in widescreen on the mac canvas window but at 4:3 on the camera's viewfinder.
I then assumed that maybe this is just becuase the mac screen (CRT by the way) doesn't use fields. So I exported the sequence as a QT movie using DV PAL 16:9 and used quicktime (OS9 Classic - my compressor has never worked because of the dreaded "unable to connect to baackground process" problem which I've never managed to correct) to convert it to MPEG2. When I import this as an asset into DVD Studio pro 4 and set the track size to 16:9 it comes through at the right aspect ratio. However it looks blurry on screen. Thinking that this will be fine on a TV I burned the disc - inserted it into my DVD player (a good one!) and watched it on my new 32" widescreen TV (a good one!) and the picture qualitty is poor. Its so much blurrier and bittier than the original footage looks when played through the camcorder's viewfinder!
The final footaage looks like an old VHS recording that's a year or two old!
Does anyone know how I can capture my footage in FCP with the maximum quality, edit it without quality loss and the export it for DVD again without such significant quality loss whilst all the time keeping it at proper 16:9 widescreen?
Is there some presets I should be working to?
I'm tearing my hair out! Help!

    Hi Guys,
    thanx for your replies.
    here's the latest:
Brian, I followed your instructions and the DVD burned successfully. However the video quality of the dvd when viewed on my TV ('ve tried on all 3 of my tvs now) is still a lot poorer than the quicktime movie that was imported into DVDSP4. When I play the original QT Movie on my Mac CRT monitor it looks a little blurry and grainy because I guess its non interlaced however when viewed on an external Video monitor it looks great - very sharp.
When I view the burned DVD on my television the picture quality looks like the non interlaced version of the original QT Movie that appeared on my Mac CRT and not the sharp interlaced (lower field) version that appeared on my external video monitor.
Its almost like taking a sharp jpeg into Photoshop and applying a gaussian blur of about 0.3 followed by jepg compression compressing it down to 5% quality!
I'm totally mystified. Can the conversion to Mpeg2 be removing all interlacing so that you get the less sharp computer monitor look? I just want the video on my final DVDs to be as good as the original source footage! I appreciate that along the way there might be loss of some quality but surely not that much?
Does this make sense to you guys or am I still doing something very wrong?
Robert: I have tried setting all manner of drives including a fresh external firewire HD with nothing on it (clean out of the box) but it doesn't seem to help.
Brian: I tried the no network suggestion a few months back but I'm not sure if I got it right. At the moment I have broadband through an external speedtouch usb modem and am also connected (occasionally although not for the last 3 months) via a crossover cable to my PCs ethernet card. When I last tried the No Network solution I had immense trouble getting my internet to work again! Can you please help me by directing me to the best ay to do this while protecting my internet settings?
any more help guys would be greatfully appreciated.

  • Help with photos in project???!!

    Hello,
I just bought an iMac about a month ago so that I could edit home movies and create DVD's of family vacations/events to share with my family. I have done this in the past on the PC with Pinnacle Movie Studio Software but it was buggy and more of a pain than it was worth.
So far pretty impressed with the iMac and FCE seems like it has potential. However I keep having problems with still photos in my video.
Here is what I have done - created a new project using the NTSC 48k template (not at my desktop now so I'm working off memory as far as naming). I captured all of my Sony Mini DV footage to the PC and dropped it into my timeline and edited it. Went smoothly. At the end of my movie I want to insert a "recap of the trip" using the still photos that I took with my digital camera and use the ken burns effect and transitions with music playing. My plan is to render and burn to DVD with iDVD for playback on a 1080p 60 inch plasma.
My photos are jpegs saved on my hard drive. I cropped them and adjusted color, etc in CS2. I didn't do anything as far as re-sizing them etc in photo shop as this is a little new to me and I didn't want to mess them up. Do I need to resize them for FCE? Seems like the program does this? If I need to resize them what size should I make them? Remember I want to be able to zoom in by creating the burns effect.
I have taken the photos and imported them into FCE. I drop them on the timeline and push play and everything looks great. When I start adding transitions with and applying the ken burns effect with key points the image plays fine by itself in the viewer window. However, when I watch the project play back in the canvas the stills appear very jumpy - not like a frame is missing in the render - the still literally looks like it jumps up and then settles back down. This is driving me nuts! FCE has to be able to do this smoothly. Can anyone provide me with a simple step by step on what settings I should be using for my sequences, etc to make this work. The settings really mess me up and I must be missing something.
I do have Tom's book but I can't find anything to help me with this issue. It is driving me nuts. Thank you in adavnce!

Thank you for the link. I went there and read the information. I still have questions:
Assuming I am using just still photos (let's keep it easy at first and assume no video) - what settings do I use for FCE under easy set up and for the sequence? Photos are jpg images shot with a digital camera that have been saved on my computer for a few years. I want to output my contents to DVD using iDVD and play back on a 1080p plasma tv.
Do I have to edit or resize the photos in photoshop first? It sounds like I can just import them into FCE and that it should work. I am not working with advanced photoshop images - just simple jpg images - no layers. The chart on page 2 of the link above says for 1080i - rectangular size N/A and square size 1920x1080. What does this mean? Is this telling me to resize my images to 1920x1080 before I import into FCE? If I want to use the Ken Burns effect and zoom should I double this to 3840x2160?
If someone can tell me step by step what they would do with the settings for FCE if they wanted to create a still photo slideshow with music, transitions and pan and zoom I would appreciate it. Again - source material is jpg images and I want to output to DVD using iDVD to display on a 1080p plasma tv. Also assuming that you had a standard landscape photo shot with a 4 megapixel camera what steps would you go through to prep it for FCE in Photoshop - if any?
Sorry that I am asking for a detailed example but I learn much better that way - after I am able to get one photo into an acceptable format for FCE the rest will be easy.
Has anyone actually created a successful slide show in FCE using transitions and the Ken Burns effect or do they get jitters in their photos as well - the image doesn't appear to flow smoothly.
