Help with PiP - iMovie 11

So - I am pretty good at figuring stuff out, but this one if baffeling me and I thought someone on here might be an iMovie 11 expert and could help.
I am using iMovie 11 v9.0.4 on a MacBook Pro.
I have been doing a 3 minute video and putting several pictures in the video. (mostly jpgs, and a few PNGs).
What keeps happening is I will drag a picture from my destop to the timeline, use the advanced tool and choose Picture In Picture... and then what ends up on the screen and timeline is not the picture I dragged in, but a schruntched version of one of the pics I alreay have in the video.
OR
I will insert a transparant PNG - and what appears when I play back in the iMovie timeline is an different picture of what I dragged in... BUT - when I export/share -- the correct picture appears.
Any help in figuring out how to correct this?
I believe the problem is just in what appears in the TIMELINE of iMovie -- not what ends up in the video... it just makes editing hard when you are not seeing what the final output is (and have to in a sense 'render' the project to see if it is inserted correctly).
Also - I have set the PNG to 1080 X 720, so it is the size of the video.
Is this just the nature of the transparent PNG beast?
Any help would be appreciated.

Need help with lost iMovie project.

I was creating an iMovie project for school and needed to save it on a USB, so I clicked on 'Export Movie' from the 'Share' options menu in iMovie. I chose the type I wanted it saved in (viewing for computers) and then a smaller screen in iMovie popped up saying it was exporting the movie, or something like that. It took about a good 30 minutes and my project was a 7 minute movie with film clips, music, transitions, ect. I exported this project to my USB but when it finished it wasn't on there and when I finally found it on the Mac somewhere, I went to drag it into my USB but it said it was full. I then dragged the project onto my desktop and tried to open it to see if it worked. When I did the iMovie icon jumped once and stopped. I clicked on iMovie and it was still there in the projects screen. I then decided to close iMovie and open the project again from my desktop to see if it would play like a normal movie but once I clicked it the iMovie icon jumped again, opened but my project that I was trying to open was not there anymore and wouldn't open from my desktop file. I cannot open it at all and view it, it has been lost from my iMovie. Is there a way that I can get it back? Really need some help with this.

What version of iMovie are you using?

Please help with workflow - iMovie '08 and Panasonic HDC-SD1

My two teenage sons play high school basketball and I've been videotaping their games using our new Panasonic SD1. Picture quality is terrific, but I've been taken aback by how much time it takes to get the footage from the camera into iMovie and then how long it takes to burn a DVD from that iMovie file. I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong and that there's a quicker way to get the job done.
The kids play four periods and I've been stopping and starting the camera in between, so I end up with four separate files on the SD card. Total time is usually an hour and change.
Okay here's the workflow from there:
~ When I get back to my iMac (2.16 Core 2 Duo with 3GB of RAM) I place the SD card in a card reader and import the four files into iMovie from there. Importing the hours' worth of video takes a couple of hours.
~ I then make one project with all four files for export to iTunes so the boys can watch on our Apple TV. Exporting, using the "large" format takes another couple of hours.
~ I then use the same exported file to make a DVD for the coach using iDVD. That process takes more than three hours.
I'd actually like to split out the four quarters of the game into separate menu items on the DVD. My thought was to make each quarter a different iMovie project, but it looks like I can't queue the four exports so I'd have to stay close to the computer to do them individually.

If you only have 1 file per quarter, one obvious thing to do would be to edit out the time in between plays, the time-outs, and the like. That is easily done in iMovie.
Having said that, importing (and exporting) in high definition takes time, and your times do not seem unreasonable.

Help with Handbrake/iMovie/mpegstreamclip

I really have almost no experience with any of this movie stuff, but I'm trying to do two - maybe three - things:
1. Gradually move all my dvd movies off the disks on onto a big external drive so I can more quickly and easily access them.
So far, all I've done is run handbrake and have it copy the movie. I just go with the settings it has (since I really don't know how to handle the options). I end up with a m4v file. Interestingly, these files won't import into iMovie 09, which is one of my issues further on.
The resulting movie seems fine, though even one of the disks of The Lord of the Rings (Return of the king) only takes up 1.5 to 1.7 gb.
So, I'd appreciate any info on whether the default settings (seems to choose "normal" on the list) are all I need or am I missing a lot?
2. One set of dvds I have is from the old Victory at Sea TV series from the '50s. I play one part of one episode for my band students since we occasionally play the music from that part. However, there is about a 5 second section of partial nudity which I can't show. So, I needed to, for now, insert a picture at the start of that point and have it last long enough to cover up that section (while the music kept going).
I did that and created the new movie, but there are some issues.
First, as mentioned, the m4v file that handbrake made would not import into iMovie. I think I used mpeg streamclip to convert it to an mp4 file (could have been quicktime pro). Anyway, I assume making that change meant there was some loss of quality as well as the time to take that step.
Then to get the still image, I played the movie in one of my players, paused at the spot I needed, and used command-shift-4 so I could make a section to make a picture from the actual movie. I was wondering if there was any way to do that within iMovie directly - as well as, regardless how I do it, get the best quality for such a picture.
Next, when I saved this new project into a new movie, it was MUCH smaller (maybe 25% the size), less quality, and, of course, yet another copy. It also gave me an m4v file and this one does show up as importable into iMovie! What gives? Oh, and the dimensions were different! Was 620x480, but it ended up 640x360!
3. I may opt to put some movies into the iphone. I know mpeg streamclip will convert to that too, but, as before, I'd like to know what the best approach is if starting from scratch with Handbrake.
Any help on these things will really be appreciated.

I have movie clips from a sony digital camera. after importing them from photos, I can see and hear the clips on the media pane window, but aft I drag them to the timeline and press play I cannot hear the video clip. can anyone help me?

Can anyone help with iMovie

Totally frustrated! I find it impossible to cut and paste parts of my video clips or to merge video clips or to move parts of a clip.Isn't that what video editing is supposed to be all about?
The help topics for iMovie aren't even in an understandable/make sense kiind of language.
Can soneone help with some simple procedures to do the above? Or do they not exist?

Also, why is there no iMovie 11 anywhere? I've seen references to it, but all the App Store has is 10.

On the rest, that's helpful too. It kind of tells me I must be off base somehow. I've tried all the copying, cutting, pasting and dragging and none of it works because when I drag a selected part or all of a clip, it doesn't work and when I copy a part and then click to paste it, nothing happens and the cut and the paste and the insert are always grayed out. It makes sense what you're saying about the selecting and cutting or copying or pasting. That's always standard procedure. That's why I'm so frustrated.
Maybe I don't know exactly what the "timeline" is. ???
What I have is 5 clips from one stage show that I converted to .mov files and 6 clips from another that I also converted. Then I imported them into iMovie as 2 new events and I tried doing the editing on each of the events, deleting some frames and trying to copy some from one to the other. That didn't work, so I put both shows (events) together in the updated projects folder and nothing still worked.
I remember when I did this last year, I made it work somehow, but I sure don't get it now. I guess maybe another part that I'm missing is how to get them into a project and then to a finalized movie. None of the pieces seem to fit this time.

Help with event in iMovie '09 event library?

I am going nuts with an iMovie project!
I am trying to make a movie of my recent vacation (which I do every year). I have already invested about 15 hours in the project. I opened iMovie tonight and tried to view it. Immediately, I noticed something was odd because as my cursor ran across clips in my project they did not show in the viewer and where ever the cursor was over a clip (either in the project or on a clip in the event I was working from) the thumbnail image in the filmstrip switched to light gray.
When I play my project all the music and titles I added play but the clips are blacked out AND the clip's audio doesn't play. The source clips in the event library also play the same in the viewer (blackout and with no audio). The problem seems to relate only to the event I am working with to create my project. I checked some other events in my library and they play fine in the viewer (although I am not using any video from those events in my current project).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just for the record I am running OS 10.5.8 on a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I am using iMovie '09 v. 8.0.6. Also, the clips were imported directly into iMovie.

I wound up resolving this on my own. I finally went to Time Machine and restored the folder "movies" under my account name. I went back about an hour before I stopped working on the project. This restored the project and allowed me to continue to work on it. I only lost about 3 minutes at the very end that I had to recreate (much better than recreating the entire project over). It has been about a week since the restore and (knock wood!) all has been well. I have learned the value of a Time Machine back-up.
One thing of note: Immediately after the restore I did have an issue with iMovie not recognizing my iTunes library. Once I opened iTunes and went back to iMovie the library was there.
Hope this helps someone else.

I need some serious help with MPEG Streamclip and iMovie 11

Hello, everyone!
I hope that some kind soul here is able to help me. My sister-in-law asked me if I could help her re-edit a video that they made of a conference she gave because she didn't like the way some parts were edited. I oh-so-kindly (and perhaps stupidly) offered to help her out!
A little background: even though I studied audiovisual communications in college, I leaned (a LOT) towards the audio production part of it and, lately, photography, too. That means that I'm not very good at the whole creating-a-movie-in-iMovie thing, even though I know it's supposed to be easy.
So, here goes: I have a DVD from her which has the typical TS files for audio and video. I downloaded a program called MPEG Streamclip and then it said I needed to buy the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component so that I could rip the DVD my sister-in-law gave me. I bought the component.
I've converted, done small, 1-minute tests, of the DVD with MPEG Streamclip to DV and also to MP4 (just in case). I do it, then import them to iMovie 11. I don't edit anything at all, just a test to see how it looks, so I immediately send the project to iDVD to see how it looks. It DOES NOT look good.
Compared to the DVD she gave me, which looks all smooth (picture-wise), mine has a certain amount (NOT HUGE) of pixelation. I can tell especially because there are some slides that were added to her project, so I can see the pixelated parts around the edges of the letters.
The DVD she gave me does NOT look HD. In fact, it looks SD (4:3), so I don't believe it's that.
If anybody here knows about this, what am I doing wrong? Am I not ripping it correctly using MPEG Streamclip? Am I not making the iMovie 11 project right? Am I burning in the "wrong way"?
If it's the MPEG Streamclip ripping that I'm doing wrong, what are the settings I should be using? What format should I be using so that it is VERY iMovie-friendly?
I want the final video that I would edit to look exactly as the one she gave me. That IS possible, right?
For extra information, if needed, I am running a MacBook Pro, 13", i7 with 4 GB of RAM and am running OS 10.6.6. I've been a Mac user since the OS 9 days.

Z, thanks a lot!! Now things don't look pixelated and my test burn looks exactly like the dvd my sister-in-law gave me... except for ONE THING:
There are these graphics done in I-don't-know-what program with a cube transition. They look like when you do 3D cube transitions in virtual desktop, you know?
Anyway, HER dvd looks completely smooth when you see these transitions but MY dvd looks... well, not right. It looks a bit like the screen or the letters "tremble" or shake a bit. I hope you can understand what I'm saying.
I followed your advice to the letter and everything is perfect with the exception of those transitions (because after the transition passes and you see the slide with the writing, it looks completely smooth).
Do you know of something that I can do to help with this problem?

Help with iMovie 11

Hello friendly Support people, I am new to iMac and Apple and the Support Community. I have been learning how to do most things by searching the net, user guides, etc, but I can't find this specific answer. How can i add fade out and in within a section of my clip and not at the start or end? I want to keep the audio as is. I filmed a school event on my iPhone and there's a wobbley, out of focus frame or two and dodgy head in front of my kid, so I just want to fade out and then back in for a few seconds. Can anyone help please?

For a transition, you need 'beef' - there's clip A, there's a clip B; with the Blade-method, I mentioned before, for sure you can add after cutting the scene, add a dissolve btw. the two clips = because 'underneath', both clips are offering still material='handle' for a dissolve
With a Cut-away, it is a bit trickier:
You can not dissolve btw the two 'tracks' (original below, 'black' above).
You somehow have to manage to get the trimmed and positioned cut-away into the main storyline (aka, timeline). In FCPX, I have a key-combo - click, done. In its tiny brother, iMovie, this is a bit less convenient…
• you have to seperate the audio from the video
• you have to manually chop the clip into parts
• you have to manually replace the unwantred part by some other material, the cut-away (other pics, black, …)
• and finally, you are allowed to apply your dissolve…
Plan B)
… no need to do all that editing in the timeline!
• when you know exactly, what parts you do NOT want in your project, select only the ranges you like:

Jeanne, you are going to have to give us some additional information: what kind of files are they, on what computer, using what application, were they made, how was the USB key formatted in the first place?
Do the files not copy to your desktop?

Help with imovie project got deleted??!

when i was finished with my imovie, i dragged the document to my flash drive. when i ejected it and went back to imovie the entire project was deleted. even on the flash drive the project was deleted. only the videos which i created were there, not the slides. i know i did not delete anything and i checked the trash and it was no in there. is there any way i can get it back??

There may be more than one cause for this error, but in most cases the project to be published includes short clips of less than about 1.5 seconds duration.
Duplicate the project. From the duplicate, delete the short clips and try to publish. If that doesn't solve the problem, see the comments of Didorx in this thread and of jguttenberg in this thread.

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto. I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them. I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows. I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years. Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge. 180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive. For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge. The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows. What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient. If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward. However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto. In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases. If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated. I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

Need help with overlapping divs!

Hey everyone,
I'm working on another website and I have come up against a common problem for newbie designers from what I hear, the dreaded overlapping div problem! I have a 2 column fixed layout with a floating left div. My left div has my nav bar and various images. When my main content div has more content than the left floating div, the left div border does not reach the footer! Until now, I have gotten by with just hitting return in my left column div until it reaches the footer. I am sure it is not the right way to do it but it has worked so far. The problem is, now one of the pages has the left column div overlapping onto the footer! I did some reading and I am guessing it involves either the box properties or clear float which I am not too familiar with.
Any advice would be stellar! I know this is just another stumbling block to get over but I would feel so much better if I was doing it the right way.

 Radon is a cancer causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today.

 If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, you're at high risk for developing lung cancer. Some scientific studies of radon exposure indicate that children may be more sensitive to radon. This may be due to their higher respiration rate and their rapidly dividing cells, which may be more vulnerable to radiation damage. 
 
 <h5>Why Is It Dangerous?</h5>
 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and the Surgeon General's Office have estimated that as many as 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused each year by radon. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon-induced lung cancer costs the United States over $2 billion dollars per year in both direct and indirect health care costs.
According to the US EPA, nearly 1 in 3 homes checked in seven states and on three Indian lands had screening levels over 4 pCi/L, the EPA's recommended action level for radon exposure.
The alpha radiation emitted by radon is the same alpha radiation emitted by other alpha generating radiation sources such as plutonium.
A family whose home has radon levels of 4 pCi/l is exposed to approximately 35 times as much radiation as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would allow if that family was standing next to the fence of a radioactive waste site. (25 mrem limit, 800 mrem exposure)
 At the 4 pCi/l EPA action guideline level, radon carries approximately 1000 times the risk of death as any other EPA carcinogen. It is important to note that the action level is not a safe level, as there are no "safe" levels of radon gas.
 
<h5>How Does It Get Into My Home?</h5>
 Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.
 Radon from soil gas is the main cause of radon problems. Sometimes radon enters the home through well water. In a small number of homes, the building materials can give off radon, too. However, building materials rarely cause radon problems by themselves.

1) Regarding validation, what does it do?
It validates by telling you where your code isn't er... valid. Sometimes the results are a bit jumbled but if you work through them one at a time and revalidate, it's a good way to learn. If you fix all of the errors shown up through the validator you should end up with standards compliant code. Not necessarily the best, most efficient code you can write but at least it will be valid and it helps you spot errors that hours of code-staring never seems to find.
I don't use the DW validation tool because I find the W3c one easier.
The W3c validator has a check box of HTML Tidy which can tidy up your code but it's not always as easy to see what changes.
2) I know the tag for spacing is wrong, I could just feel it in my bones. I just didn't know what else to do. If I all the way down won't the code be just as cluttered?
You're obviously a born web coder!
 will bloat your page if you use them to position elements.
Here you need to get used to a) the Block Model and b) CSS positioning. Once you crack these, CSS opens up for you and becomes a little more intuitive.
if you have two elements on top of each other rather than push them apart with other elements you do it with padding and/or margin. There are things to watch out for here namely, collapsing margins but if you start to read up on the above, you'll get it.
I just thought of something. If I add a div in main content, align it to the bottom center with CSS, use a line break between it and the text above, and add the image in question in the new div, will the spacing between the text and image work itself out? I just really want to get out of the bad habit.
Keep thinking! Web design is not like desktop publishing or print. Elements on a HTML page don't behave like paragraphs on a page. Once you begin to figure out why not it all gets a little easier.
If you want an image at the bottom an element you put that at the end of the content in that element. Then you need to ensure there is no margin, padding or border between the img element and the next element (your footer). HTML elements come with some styling that is applied by default in the browser. Many web developers include a rule like this:

This sets the margin and padding to zero of course and it's purpose is to override the defaults. Some people advocate applying similar rules to all elements and if your interested try googling Eric Meyer who has written about it online.
One of the key purposes of CSS is to take styling out of the page. It's leaner, more efficient for the viewer and the coder and helps with site management.
3) AP divs are weird, and I did only use as a last resort.
See? You're a natural!
The reason is I am confused by the float and clear float classes. My left column is floated left and that element is what I was having problems understanding. I tried to make new divs and float right but I screwed it all up. I am sure I am just not applying the clear float in the right places.
Getting the hang of floating is key to CSS positioning. You use a float if you want two elements to sit side by side on the page. It disrupts the "document flow." Ordinarily HTML elements are rendered one after the other, on top of each other. Floating an element takes it out of the document flow and allows other elements to occupy its space. When you float an element it should always have a width. If the element below it also has a width, that width has to be sufficiently narrow to allow it to occupy the space. In short, floated elements can't be wider than their containing element.
The clear property is used after a float to stop an element occupying the space left by a floated element. It works but confuses the heck out of me!
So that leads me to my final point. I am a novice too! I might have fluffed a few of the technical points above but it's pretty much there.
