Help with Preference pane DNS settings for Mail

I have a mail (not Apple Mail) issue with my Entourage Mail. I keep getting
the following error message and I have verified the server settings in my
mail accounts are correct for ATT that uses pop.att.yahoo.com. I manage to
get mail most of the time but I still get the following error message:

Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.

My System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS point to my 2wire Gateway combo
modem/router. The router is set for Automatic DNS. I tried changing it to manual
and it did not works any better.
If I change the DNS setting in the preference pane in OS X, will it really use that
DMS address and bypass the router?
I played around with the namebench utility
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/32784/namebench and each time you
run it, namebench makes a better recommendation - saying something is faster
than the previous recommendation.
I am lost on what I need to do correct the Network pane of my System Preferences.
Should it point to the router or to good DNS?
I do not think this is a Microsoft Entourage issue.
Have others seen this issue or is unique to my setup.

The problem is solved and I have checked the Yes button that my
question has been answered. The following is a copy of a posting

Thanks to a tip from Diane Ross I have gone two days without
getting the error message.
First, I know the Account Settings for my ATT DSL service
have been correct for some time and have not changed.
The short version of the fix that worked for was to open
the OS X 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) System Preferences/
Network/Advanced/DNS panel and add some better Domain
Name Servers from my location.
The default (or before) OS X setting was:
DNS Servers: Search Domains:
192.168.1.254 gateway.2wire.com
Note both were dimmed. The server listed tells OS X to use
the ATT provided combo 2wire modem/router for my DSL service.
The change that seem to have worked for me was to leave the
Search Domain the same; however, I added some good servers that
bypass the 2wire gateway with its automatic DNS setting.
DNS Servers: Search Domains:
208.67.220.220 gateway.2wire.com
208.67.220.222
65.68.49.51
192.168.1.254
I found the ‘good’ or better DNS Servers by making several runs
using the free Google utility called namebench 1.2

This utility takes some time and will make suggestions from your
location. If you add the namebench recommendation and run it
again it will find a better recommendation. I had to make several
runs to find the better DNS Servers for my location. The first or
primary is called OpenDNS, the second is a backup for the OpenDNS
and the third is SBC Global TX now owned by ATT and I live in
Texas. Note I ended with the default IP address.
FYI, I tied using the selected servers in the 2wire gateway in the
manual mode rather than the default automatic mode and it just
did not work right. Some pages would not open and others were
slow. For this reason I run the router in the automatic mode for
DNS and control things using the OS X Network preference pane.
The addition of preferred DNS Servers in my Preference seems
to have slowed down and hopefully stopped Entourage 2008
version 12.2.4 -3170 error messages.

Yesterday, the signatures were stacking instead of switching to the one I wanted to choose.

I had this and fixed it.
I had upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures in Mail were fine. But then about a week later, I got a new computer and used Migration Assistant to copy my stuff to the new machine. Upon opening Mail, I had all the correct Signature information in the Preferences>Signatures window, but nothing worked.
After lots of hunting, I found the Signature Folder. It's in:
Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
Looking at my previous setup (which works) I saw in that folder two types of files: .webarchive and .siganture
Looking in my new machine's Signature folder, I saw only the .webarchive folders, not the .signature folders
Since this was literally a clone of my previous setup to a new machine, here's what I did:
1. Quit Mail
2. In Problem machine, go to
Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
3. Move the Signatures folder someplace safe, but out of the MailData folder
4. Get the Signatures Folder from the working install (like a backup) and copy it to the MailData folder on the problematic machine
5. Start Mail on the problem machine
This worked for me. I don't know why Migration Assistant didn't copy the full signature folder, but this fixed it. It worked perfectly partly because I had just backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner and the very next day set up the new machine. I don't know where Lion or earlier versions of mail stored signatures, but the absence of the .signature filetype seems to be the problem.

You will need an external hard drive (formatted for a Mac).
Then you plug it in and go to system preferences>time machine and select the external HD and turn it on.
The backups are automatic.

I now have to open my mail in-box and wait for my email messages to download. Do I need to reset or change my mail settings? Hi Chris. Thanks, for the suggestions re: my email issues. They were helpful and yes I did check all items you referenced. I even contacted Apple support and spent about 40 minutes on phone checking all settings. However, after all these efforts, my mail and calendar issues were not resolved. Apple Support finally recommended deleting the mail account and then reloading it - and it worked! I am now receiving my emails and calendar appts. in real time again.
Just wanted to share this in case anyone elest has a similar problem with mail/calendar after downloaing i.O.S. 8.1 onto iPhone 5.

I need help with some technical YouTube Settings, third party tools page

How can I add ios mobile Safari, back to my google + third-party tools page? I updated my ipad 2 to ios7 and could no longer upload videos to youtube for my blog. YouTube had been saying unrecognized file type because it's not longer compatible with ios mobile photos app.
I went into settings via the google/youtube help files and removed some old stuff from the third party apps, like blogger-an inactive blog and obviously deleted the ios moblie too that was right underneath blogger. tried jumping through their hoops, add a phone number, verify your account, lengthen your video time, add 2 step verification (which was horrible and I went back in and removed it), add a password for ipad, etc.
They (youtube/google??) have been working on stuff because there is all kinds of new things the second day I tried to figure this out via their help/redirect links. ios mobile was there before and now it's gone, even though I did not choose/select it. But I have noticed that the ipad screen is much more sensitive than it was before the ios7 update. I don't even have to touch the screen for some things, it accepts and goes on it's own while my finger is hovering over the screen.

The Title of my post, should really be....I have ipad2 with ios7.0.3 and Safari, I can't upload videos to YouTube because of Google? or ios7?
It's now November 1st. LOL 53 folks have read my problem and it only gets better. I pleaded with Google/YouTube via Feedback form (because they are one and the same now) to please add ios mobile back to Google 3rd party apps and after checking every single day, someone finally added it back for me. Yay! Then I asked if I needed to "revoke" Google+ in the 3rd party apps because some of the help files suggested Google+ is attached to your YouTube channel and might affect uploading of videos? For the life of me, I could not figure out how to get it off my YouTube channel. And the help files didn't take me to a place to change it. Upon checking 3rd party apps, I could no longer find the page they were on, and the Google+ app icon now goes no where.
Hey, but there are new menus with all kinds of statistics now about your account, like how many subscribers you have, what the average number of minutes people watch your videos,etc. Hmm... so I tried uploading a video and it worked. I got the message that ios7.0.3 with bug fixes was available a few days ago and updated to that. I'm back to, no longer upload videos, yesterday it was still freezing on the upload screen, where you add the title of your video and all of the specs, it appears to be half uploaded with a solid blue bar half way and goes no where. I have to close the app after an hour or more. I have rebooted a couple of times every day. Today it says, we could not upload your video, we did not recognize the format of this file. And when I go to YouTube and can see all of my videos, my subscriptions, I can not remove the videos that tried to upload, they are blank gray squares. A few days ago I could edit them out. I guess they are still working on it. These are the same self recorded videos, that I have been uploading for a year, same ipad. I have sent feedback to Google/YouTube once again.
I'm completely at their mercy. I have yahoo mail, so I can't send my videos via email, even though my channel has a special email address to send videos to for upload. Yahoo will not send a video more than a minute or so. I created an AT&T email address today, and it's the same there, will not send a 15 minute video. The upload link on YouTube no longer works, there on the same page with your special email address to mail your videos in, even though there is no email that supports a 15 minute video. My husband suggested video compressing program. I have not tried to upload from a PC, I do have icloud, so that may be my next route. Other forums say they/Google/YouTube are fully aware of it and are working on it. Still 30+ days in...
It's a shame these companies can't work together, it's a shame that there is no answer, because we all have these devices we spent hundreds of dollars on and want them to work. I have been searching the web for 30+ days and no one knows the answer. Hard to believe I'm the only person having this ipad issue.

I´m a german Designstudent and I have bought the Adobe Creative Suite 4. Students-Edition. Problem #1: It`s the english version. Ok, were living in a big worldwide town, we´re all speaking english, so that won´t be the biggest problem.
My question: Is anybody out there who can help me to get Indesign started?
- Indesign doesn´t react, when i use shortcuts, and they are not next to the menus, like it´s normal.
- I´m not able to make new textlines in textfields
- in the adjustments direktly after installing, there are no toolboxes visible, i always have to open them again after new starting.
This are the Problems, wich make it very hard to work.
I even uninstalled Indesign, installed it again, but the problems are the same. I tried to use the keycombination strg. alt. and tab, when I started Indesign, to make the preferences to the adjustments of the beginning. This doesn´t work too. I searched on the computer after a file with preferences, ore something else.
But now i´m at the end of my ideas!
Please answere in english or german!
I hope that there is an other sollution, than to buy a new german version. I´m a poor student =)

On Vista you should find your InDesign settings files under Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\6.0\[language] and it's that [language] folder that you should try renaming (copy the whole indesign folder to a safe place as a backup, first). There may be another folder in that same area as well, but I don't have vista and don't know the paths. It might be Users\[username]\local settings\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\6.0\[language]
Also look in the program files\common\adobe direcectory for any InDesign folders that have a language designation for version 6, and in the InDesign program directory. You might want to wait until one of the vista users comes on board to give you the correct path information.
In any case, back up anything you are about to change, and make notes so you can undo the damage if it doesn't work. Setting a restore point first would also be a good idea.

DNS Zone for Mail

Following on from my first question which the nice Mr Camelot answered for me
I have a server which has a DNS zone of companyname.net.
Internal mail has been setup using Mail Exchanger set to mail.companyname.net.
I have checked changeip -checkhostname and there are no issues.
The public DNS records have been set to make mail.companyname.com the MX record, and an A record for mail.companyname.com has been setup pointing to the static IP.
As I see it I have two options I can move forward with (3 actually if I wipe the server and start again )
1. Try and rename the DNS zone to companyname.com and then reset the mail settings to match.
2. Setup a CNAME on the server internal DNS to point mail.companyname.com to mail.companyname.net and leave the mail settings as they are.
I am in the process of installing SL Server on a VM to test the first option to see if it is viable, but my question is are there any options I have missed, and what would you suggest I do in this circumstance?

So you have a zone for a host mail.example.net within your network, and valid external DNS services with an A record and MX at mail.example.com within your external DNS services, and you're wondering about rebuilding this all?
It'd be far easier to just enable mail.companyname.com as a virtual host within the mail server configuration.
Personally, I'd look to remove the use of the internal example.net MX for the mail server, and use the external path. You can set up the MX for the internal network to resolve to mail.example.com, for instance. With that (and with a firewall that knows how to reflect" outbound traffic for the WAN IP address, or - somewhat uglier - adding a DNS A record for the mail.example.com within your internal zone), the configuration is the same for all hosts, whether internal desktops or mobile devices.
Note that the companyname.com and companyname.net domains are real and registered domains. The domains example.com, example.net and example.org are RFC-reserved for documentation and for these sorts of postings.

Help with imap gmail account via mac mail

What are the best settings for gmail as imap in mac mail?
I have my gmail account set up with mac Mail as an IMAP account.
I notice that in the last few weeks?? not sure how long, my mac mail is taking forever to load. I opened the activity window and it seems like there are so many things happening. I did find an old account that was still had some activity and while I had delteed it, I did need to do a few more steps to get it out of the process.
Now, as it still seems to take forever for my inbox to fully load, I began looking into the settings.
I am not able to change the settings for trash and I think saving the deleted messages to the server could be a waste of time. This is the advanced setttings page
the trash is 'grayed out' and won't allow me to uncheck the 'store deleted messages on the server'. Anyone know how to change this?
Also, I want to uncheck 'store sent messages on the server' as I think that will save a LOT of process activity, but gmail's directions for imap accounts says to leave it checked. Not sure why, any thoughts?

I'm not familiar with CalbeOne, but you can follow the instructions they provided at their site:

You might also want to make sure you followed their transfer instructions.
Build your accounts in Mail as per the POP or IMAP settings provided. When adding accounts to Mail, when you get to the first screen, you can hold the option key down when you hit continue for more options on the Mail configurations rather than the standard defaults.
If you are viewing these accounts at the gmail website, then you might need to do some configuration there also. I'm not sure on how much they are integrated with gmail.

DNS Settings for Westell 9100EM Router

I have continuously been experiencing issues with Verizon's preset DNS setting when using DHCP, and therefore plan to use a different set of DNS servers (I hear that 4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.5 are recommended in the DC area where I live).
I wonder, however, where to change the DNS setting in the router. The 9100EM has primary and secondary DNS settings both for the LAN (i.e. the internal network) (under My Network - Network Connections - Network (Home/Office)) and for the external WAN network (under My Network - Network Connections - Broadband Connection (Ethernet)).
Are the settings for both networks supposed to be identical, or can I use different settings for the LAN and for the WAN.
Any recommendations which DNS servers I should choose for either network connection?

If you are trying to do that in the router's UI, no kidding.
If you are trying to do that on a computer behind the router, perhaps the router does not act as a DNS Server relay.

DNS settings for virtual host 10.6 server

We have just gone through a rebranding exercise, i.e. the company name has changed from 'mycompany' to our 'ourcompany'.
For various reasons we have decided to not rename our complete setup, but rather add a virtual host for our mail server including a second primary DNS zone for the new domain 'ourcompany'.
We are hosting our website externally, however since we added the second primary DNS zone incl. an A record (www) pointing to our external website hosts IP for 'ourcompany', workstations on our LAN can no longer access the website.
Running DIG for 'www.ourcompany.com.au' results in the correct A record IP address being shown, but it is still not showing in any browser – we also made sure we emptied our caches.
Although we thought this should work relatively easily, we are now totally confused as to the additional primary zones general settings... currently we allow zone transfer and provide an entry in the nameserver section.
Any ideas as to what might be going on here would be greatly appreciated.

Correct we are not using my bad example domains.
Each host should have one A record (and one AAAA record, if you have IPv6 active), and one of the more common errors in these migrations is setting up an A record for each new domain that might arrive; each host has one A (and possibly one AAAA) record, and that's the canonical name for that host. Externally, that'll probably be the latest name in any sequence (such as www.example.com), and all previous names (including www.example.org) will have CNAME entries.
To clarify do you mean the following: internally we should not have more than one A record for each host... i.e. one for example.org and one for example.com and presumably any other subdomains should be CNAME records?
2. externally we should change the A record for www.example.org to a CNAME record and create a new A record for www.example.com;
Internally (and here's why having a different domain inside is handy) use one of the old names; use example.org, for instance. This means you can use the public DNS services for the external web sites and resources; your internal DNS servers receive the requests for example.com hosts and go "duh, lemme ask somebody else for that", and that somebody else is the (public) DNS server your external DNS services for example.com hosts.
Exactly what we had initially done - basically we (naively) thought we could get away with only relying on external DNS translations... however that resulted in mail clients on our LAN loosing their connection every 5-10 minutes, thus we decided to setup another primary DNS zone which fixed that problem but created the other.
Please also note we have created a subdomain admin.example.com which properly resolves to the CMS backend - btw. from within this backend you can then preview the any page on the regular website with their non www. URLs.
Since the current setup resolves to the correct IP address I wonder if it could be a problem with the .htaccess rewrite rules the web developer has setup to remove the www. ... or is this too far fetched?
The usual trigger for not reaching the external A (or AAAA) records is either a stale cache on the particular client (for translations inside the Time To Live (TTL) values for the old DNS translations, or pending a local cache flush on each client), or (and this is more common) confusion over authoritative DNS servers; you have your internal DNS configured as authoritative for the new www.example.com domain, and also authoritative for the old www.example.org domain, and your external DNS is also authoritative for (probably) both domains. Internal requests get as far as the internal server, and get an authoritative translation (possibly being "no such host"), and don't go any further.
Safari & Firefox present with 'Server not found' errors.
So we are still stuck thus any further advice would be much appreciated.

DNS Settings for multiple domains internal and external.

First forgive me if my post is in the wrong area. If it is, kindly show me to the right location..
OK, here is the deal. I have an xserve running 10.5.6 perfectly. 5 Domains running on it as well perfectly fine. lets call them domain1, domain2, etc...
I run web services and mail services for all 5 domains. but heres the problem...
I want to add another domain "domain6" but I only run the web services not mail. how can I set this up? I tried to add another Zone and only set up the www.domain6.com part but then no mail works as there is no mx record available.
I am behind a firewall. when I am on a local machine and there is no domain6 DNS entry the mail works as the address to the external mail server is correct. but no local web works because I am getting the external IP to the www server. I need to keep traffic on the LAN.

Ok that worked. but let me clue you in on something that was happening...
When I set up the domain6 then set up the ns record went on to create the www, mail1, anad mail2 entries when I went to save it addded domain6 to the end of the nameserver host name and both mail MX entries. That was my problem I just didnt see it the first time. I then edited the mail entries and removed the "domain6.com" and left the real mx host names and all is working now. Thanks for helping me.

Please help with highest quality export settings...

I have searched the forum and web for hours (no joke!) and I am still trying to figure out what are the best video settings to give me the highest HD quality video in daylight. I am using a Canon HF200 and the latest updated version of FCE. My problem is that I am unable to produce an HD quality video at 1920 x 1080 Full HD without being "jagged". I have two questions; what do you suggest to be the best FCE import and export settings to produce the best HD video, and what settings do you have your HF200 set to (for normal daylight conditions), to produce the best HD video file? The file will be played directly thru my computer to a plasma HDTV.
I have tried several settings, but using anything above 1280x720 16:9, makes the video "jagged". Again, I don't care about the size of the file or how long it takes, I just want the best. Is there something I am missing?
My FCP settings are the following:
I log and transfer the video from the camera into FCP (on a black MacBook; 2.16 GHz with 4 GB RAM) using the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i source. I then export the video using the following:
Export using "Quicktime Conversion".
Quicktime options video settings are:
Frame Rate set to "Current"
Key Frames set to every "24" frames
Compressor quality: "best" (Encoding set to "best quality")
Data Rate set to "automatic"
Quicktime options video size are:
"HD 1280 x 720 16:9" (anything higher produces the jags!)
Deinterlace source video is NOT checked
My Canon HF 200 settings are the following:
- P mode
- FXP (17 Mbps)
- 60i framerate
all others are set to the normal default
I have read some reports saying the above is good and others suggesting changing FXP to MXP (24 Mbps) and/or the framerate from 60i to PF30. I don't care about the size of the file, I just want the highest quality HD file.
Any suggestions for the best FCE settings and/or HF200 settings would be very much appreciated!

Let me try my best to answer the above (I'm new at all this and I appreciate you guys taking the time to try and help me out).
First off, I tried rendering and that did not help.
Here is my sequence. I am not going into FCE from the camera directly. I have archived the video file from the camera using iMovie (as well as just making an exact copy of the camera files; they both appear to me to be the exact same, both can be logged and transferred into FCE, and both files give me a jagged FCE result).
Once I log and transfer the file(s), I then take the clip and add it to a sequence file (rendering or not rendering the clip(s) at this point does not make a difference), and then click/highlight the sequence file in the browser and export it.
As for "editing the video in a 1920x1080i60 sequence", I think I am. I am not doing any editing to the clip. It is logged and transferred using the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i and then exported using either as a Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion (set for 1920 x 1080 using H.264 compression; both ways still result in a jagged video).
That's about it...log and transfer, add clip to sequence, and then export sequence...

Also, if I use iMovie, with similar export (share) settings, I get a non-jagged video (I have tried with deinterlacing and not deinterlacing, and both video results are fine)
