Help with purchase decision?

Please direct me to another section if this is not the right one. I've searched for "purchase advice" & other choices, but come up empty.
My current system is listed below. (Includes lame VGA monitor.) I'm finding it harder & harder to use my system 9.2 on the internet, due to lack of recognition of installed applications -- such as new versions of Flash Player, etc. IE has been problematic lately (auto-quitting with Type I or Type II error messages). Also a lot of screen "complaints" about low system memory. ("Unable to display image" etc.)
My primary needs are (1) a more current OS, with more current application options suitable to today's technology, (2) space, space & more space for a Ratpack Major.
I don't make movies, don't even own yet a digital camera, wouldn't compose music, etc. We are generally a low-tech household by today's standards. Also still have an old inkjet printer. Have Apple's old but great-condition LaserWriter, but it has not been connected.
Primary needs are internet research & word processing & e-mailing. Organizational kinds of software could be helpful (like iCal or .mac), but lots of video/audio bells & whistles are not needed.
Would a macMini be a better purchase or a G5?
G3 converted to G4   Mac OS 9.2.x   non-wireless but have Airport Extreme for wireless laptops in household. Also have an External HD.

Thank you, Tom. I have another concern, though. Having spoken to a friend yesterday, who recently purchased a mini, & who was also upgrading from OS 9.2, I'm having concerns about data transfer. She had this problem Major, as (I've noticed) other discussion board posters. I do not know if data transfer is a problem from G3/G4 to G5. I cannot afford to encounter significant data transfer issues -- or worse, risk a meltdown or significant delay in that transfer. I need my computer 18/7. So, crazy as it sounds, I'm considering purchasing a mini + flat screen (or a G5) side-by-side with my current G3/G4 set up & VGA. This would additionally have the advantage of keeping my work separate from my personal stuff, should I choose to do that. As some of my work is obviously on this computer, I would like to network. (Never done that either.)

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Help with my decision to purchase a Mac

I am in business and must use PC based software for certain applications. The machinery I use is only PC based, and there are no plans to create a Mac version. I am fine with that. However, since I have started using a Mac at my church, for recording and editing, I am ready to make the switch, if only partially.
One big selling point is the apparent ease in creating presentations, brochures, websites, blogs, and podcasts. So, to help in my decision, I need to know if creating a website, and maintaining it, is as easy as the Apple website makes it out to be. My church has a website, and it seems very difficult to make changes, and writing all of the HTML code, which is all done by someone else, who does not like Macs.
I love how the Mac works, and I am not intimidated at all at the technology, because I haved learned AutoCAD with relative ease, Router CIM-Tech which runs a CNC router, Cabinet software, Final Cut, GarageBand, Live Lite 4, as well as all of the Microsoft Office stuff, which is a pain to use at times. And 2 years ago, I was almost computer illiterate.
I will always have to use a PC, but I would love to use a Mac for the majority of my work, as well as for fun. I just need to see that the pros overwhelm the cons.

    Power Book G4   Other OS

I am on the diving board and ready to take the
plunge. I do understand that some people may not be
able to view the site. Could I have a free download
of what it takes to view it on the site? Or will I
only be able to post it on .Mac? If I give
prospective customers the web address, will they be
able to access it, if they do not have a Mac? I am
using my Windows IE version 6.0 right now and I can
go pretty much anywhere. But is that because I have
    installed iTunes and Quick Time?
Compatibility is always an issue and exists even for Windows developers aiming at a Windows only market. Many tend to think of Windows as being monolithic but it isn't. There are a significant number of people using Windows 98 and the original Explorer browser. Indeed, there are still people using Windows 3, old versions of Netscape, even Mosaic! All developers make a fundamental decision: try to support all browsers or don't try. My experience has been that my iWeb websites are viewable by WindowsXP users who have the newest version of Explorer or FireFox. Older versions of Explorer and Mozilla have issues.
I just want to be able to say go to "xyz.com" to view
my product offering, and be done with it. But what
are the costs in maintaining this "xyz.com" site? If
it is just a subscription to .Mac that would be cool.
If I have to pay a third party to allow me to have
it, then I would like to know who that is and what is
    involved.
I did a quick search for the .Mac terms of service. I'm not certain if .Mac allows you to create commercial sites. There are lots of alternatives. I don't want to give any endorsements but I will say that my wife found a hosting site for her business that charges $12 a month that provides double the bandwidth of .Mac and an unlimited number of email accounts with POP and SMTP services. She got her domain name through that service for nothing, it was part of the deal. We simply did a search on Google for 'web hosting' did some comparison shopping, and rejected any service that didn't provide references.

  • I really need help with my decision in purchasing an iPhone 4! =(

I will just go to my main concern.
I lost the phone of my aunt which is an iPhone 4. It was stolen from my bag. Out of common sense, I have to find a replacement because I know the my aunt invested money on it. However, brand new iPhone 4 here on our country are still pretty expensive for my budget. It is also hard to find becuase mostly stores no longer carry it becuase there is now iPhone 5. So, i have no choice, but to purchase a second-hand iPhone 4. So far, the second-hand iPhone 4 that I saw are from Singapore and Japan.
Now, my question. How can I be sure that the iPhone 4 that I purchase will work in the United States when my aunt will go back to the US. She works and live in the United States. I want to make sure that she can use the phone when she goes back to the United States.
Please please please I need help.
I am already stressed finding money to buy a replacement.

Verizon's offers full theft and loss protection. I am an attorney and tend to read fine print :)
The $8 a month is nominal compared to the benefit and peace of mind. I have had it on all my phones and typically you have to ask for it.
Over the past two years I have used it twice. My phone at the time was an HTC Evo, about a $500 phone. To replace outside the 2yr contact you must pay full price. That is $1000 for 2 phones.
The insurance cost me a couple hundred plus the deductibles. That's under $500 to replace two phones, or a savings of about $500 or 50%.
Even if you replace 1 phone in two years, your saving a few hundred- more if its an iPhone which retails starting at $700.
It all depends on where and how you use your device. If you never replaced one before the you may be better off without. I also don't put cases or screen protectors on my phones. I wouldn't dare put one on my beautiful iPhone 5.
Just a thought, if you don't have insurance, you should be ready to drop $750 at any given time for a new iPhone. Otherwise you end up with a temporary flip.

  • Help with purchasing new Mac Book Pro- 2014 release vs. 2013?

OK, so my 15" 2008 Mac Book Pro is on its last gasp--didn't help when I dropped it while open (I can now see into its innards though it's still working...sort of).
I'm not a technophile (mainly use my laptop for writing--my profession--and eBay business) so my sister told me to make sure that I had at least 8 GB and a fast processing speed. Retina display not necessary (her graphic artists friends hate it apparently) so that would lower the price; however it seems that there are two releases: Oct 2013 and July 2014.  Read up on the latest release but not sure how much is necessary for to have...or care about.
Can you all weigh in and tell me (a) how important it is to have "the latest and greatest" and (b) how necessary is Retina display and (c) which would YOU purchase if you had my budget constraints.  Thanks!
Anyway, I've narrowed down my choices of MacBook Pro purchases to what was within my budget: $1300 including tax.  I wanted a 15" but it was too much $$$$, plus I can just use an external monitor.
Both are available at Apple. Both come with 1 year and 3-year extended warranties and both have the standard software installed, including Pages.
One more thing....Wondering if having Flash Storage is important?  Only refurbished one (see below) has it.
Prices for both end up being almost the same--around $1250 out the door, including tax.
OPTION #1  NEW LAPTOP. July 2014 Release   NON RETINA DISPLAY
2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    4GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x2GB - NOTE: I WOULD HAVE THIS UPGRADED TO 8 MG
    500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
    Accessory Kit
OPTION #2   REFURBISHED  -Oct. 14 Release - RETINA DISPLAY
13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch
    8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    256GB Flash Storage1
    720p FaceTime HD camera
    Intel Iris Graphics

Hmm... I'm not really sure where you found a July 2014 release without a retina display. I think it might be the old version because that laptop was last updated in 2012 (to my understanding. Also, your sister is kind of wrong, if you want a computer that will work well for everyday things, 4gb of ram is just fine. I have a three year old MacBook Air with 4gb of ram and do things in Photoshop, Illustrator, Pixelmator, FCP, etc. all the time running OS X Yosemite and it runs like brand new. However, if you want to future proof it, you might want 8gb so it can always run the latest OSes.
Flash Storage is amazingly fast compared to a Hard Drive. It also has no moving parts, therefore is much more durable, and much more likely to survive a drop than a Hard Drive (which would seem to be useful in your situation).
Also, I don't know why your sister's friends would hate the Retina display. Many people love it because it gives them the ability to edit pixel by pixel with perfect accuracy.
I would go for the Retina display. It has better specs for the same price so why not? Not to mention that it's much faster and will likely receive updates much longer than the new MacBook Pro without Retina display.
    I hope I helped.

  • Need help with purchase of PC please

My husband needs to purchase a computer for a PlasmaCAM which is a metal cutting system.  He has charged me with this task since I know a little more about this stuff than he does.  Although I have no idea what some of these items mean on the requirement list.
Below is a list of requirements for the pc on the PlasmaCAM sheet that husband gave me.  What exactly do we need to buy and can I get it at any old Wal-Mart or Best Buy?
In advance--I sure appreciate the help!!  I have no idea what I am looking at here (Obviously I understand a Pentium processor to some degree and Win 7 but some of this stuff I am clueless about)
    *Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz or equivilent/faster PC
    *Windows 7
*DVD ROM drive with and 10 GB free hard disk space
*Standard bi-directional EPP or PS/2 mode (5V preferred) parallel port--dedicated strictly for controlling the PlasmaCAM cutting table.  A true physical parallel port is required (not a USB to parallel converter, for example)
*IEEE 1284 compliant parallel port cable (optimum length is 6 foot)

This is it. Computers used to come with these standard, until they were replaced by USB. Some equipment manufactuer's still use the good old parallel port, as it's extremely simple to pin-out and write basic programs for.
StarTech.com PCI Express Parallel Adapter Card
    Model: PEX1P | SKU: 9658074
This adapter card installs into a PCI Express slot allowing you to connect printers, scanners, Zip drives or memory card readers via the DB25 parallel port to most PCs.

  • Please help with purchased application on app world....

Hi. I hope someone can help me. I purchased an application (shazam encore) on bb app world, I clicked on the price tag, and then entered my password 2 start the purchase and downloading. When it was supposed to start the download, it gave me an error message of insufficient funds, while I had R160.83 in my account. When I checked my balance, I found that app world billed me for the application which I can't download. What can I do?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I suggest that you clear the AppWorld application cache:
    1. Open App World
    2. Go to My World
    3. Follow one (and only one!) of these steps:
3a. For keyboard-based BB's -- Hold down the ALT key and then press, in sequence R, then S, then T
3b. For Touch Screen Only BBs -- Hold the num-lock (!?123) button so it locks and then press, in sequence 3, then 4, then (
    3c. For newer (e,g., OS6 and 7) BB's, see this KB:
KB24714 How to clear the BlackBerry App World cache
    4. AppWorld should close.
    5. If your BB locks after issuing the cache clear, perform a battery pull reboot
    6. Return to AppWorld/MyWorld (it may be sluggish while it re-synchronizes).
If step (4) does not happen as listed, then the clear cache did not work.
Hopefully that will allow you to download the app you paid for. If not, then you need to contact your mobile service provider (vodacom, according to your profile) for resolution of this...they may have to escalate you into RIM so that teh records can be properly checked. Please be aware that if the vodacom rep tells you they can't help or that you need to contact RIM directly, then you need to either ask for their supervisor or hang up and call back. There is no method for you to contact RIM directly on this...only via escalation from your carrier can your case receive formal attention from RIM.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Need help with Laptop decision

I am sorry about the length of this post, but I really need help. I am trying to buy a laptop and what should be a really exciting prospect (buying my first laptop) is turning into a nightmare that just about had me in tears over the weekend.
My budget is not big - 600 absolute max, but would prefer to spend a bit less than this.
I do mainly office work (Word, Excel, Databases and PowerPoint) and also some Photoshop work. I also play a strategy game called Caesar 3. I very much want to load my copy of XP on the machine, either replacing Vista or as a partition.
Looking through the models available in my price range and looking up the benchmarks I have found the following:
Most have processors like the Intel T5250 or T5450 or the AMD TL 58, which are all benchmarked as ok, but not great. A few have the AMD TL 60, which is a bit better and one or two have the Intel T7200 which is even better.
On the bulk of the machines the graphics cards are either the ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 or the Intel GMA X3100. Both of these are benchmarked as not great and the review says that they cannot handle strategy games. A few of the models have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 or HD 2400XT and one or two have the HD 2600.
The problem is that the models that have the better processor have the lower rated graphics card and those that have both don't have XP drivers, as far as I can see.
Don't mind a 15.4'' screen (although the 17.1'' would be very nice to have) and would like a reasonably big hard drive (160 +). I will be getting 2GB of RAM.
I am at my wits end. I don't want to buy a computer that will end up taking a minute or more to refresh a screen when you have more than two things open, or that you have to keep rebooting to get it to work. I want to be able to play my one and only game (Caesar III) which is a strategy game and I want to be able to work in Photoshop and perhaps have one or two other things open at the same time, like a website perhaps.
Please help me, anyone. Am I asking for the impossible? I can't get hold of an email address for Toshiba to try to get clarity from them on the issue of drivers and whether they will be made available in the future.
Then there is of course the retailer issue as each retailer only stocks a limited number of models and one has to choose between those.
I hope someone can help me!!

    Hi
The problem is that you want to buy an all-round notebook but dont want to spend much money.
Additionally you want to change the OS to XP and need the XP drivers.
Well this is very hard decision buddy ;)
A notebook for gaming equipped with the power full graphic card cost a little bit more as 600
So you have to take a decision; Do you want to buy an gaming notebook and spend more as 600 or you will take an notebook which is great for a common usage like DVD watching, working with Office software, etc
The Cesar game is not known to me but I presume it doesnt need a high performance graphic card and it should run on a normal notebook too.
I think a Satellite a200 is not bad choice for you because some A200 notebooks were delivered with the Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor and a NVIDIA GeForce graphic card.
And very important is that all XP drivers were already released ;)

  • Help with purchasing from shopping cart

When I try to purchase my shopping cart, I receive a message that my "session has timed out. Please start this operation from the beginning." I have purchased and downloaded songs on this computer before (my macbook), but not for a few months (I don't buy songs very often). I tried updating to the latest version of itunes and restarting my computer but it is still giving me the same error message. Any suggestions? I have quite a few songs in the shopping cart that I want to buy

This is a bit of a long shot, but it worked for another user, so it's worth a try. Create a normal playlist and title it anything you like ("Buylist", for example), and drag the items from the Cart to that list so you have them for reference. Then go to the iTunes Store preferences, select "Buy and Download Using 1-Click", close the preferences window, reopen the preferences window and reselect "Buy and Download Using Shopping Cart". Then see if your Shopping Cart will work; you can click the "buy" button for each track in your "buy" playlist.
If not, another user reported that the problem occurred when his credit card expiration date needed updating. Log into your iTunes Store account and check your credit card information.
If neither of those suggestions helps, you may need to contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the form linked from the bottom of their web page and explain the problem to them.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help with purchasing video card for my G5

hi i would like to get a new faster graphics card for my g5. i have a 1.6 ghz g5 and i have the stock 64 mb geforce fx 5200 and would like to get something faster that is agp. i do most of my work in vector programs such as flash and illustrator, photoshop and do light after effects work also. any recommendations would be appreciated especial the one where i can get more bang for my buck! thanks!

I wonder why the opposite happens to us Mac owners. When the PC spec becomes obsolete, graphic cards are still being produced at a cheaper price. When it's for the Mac, they stop producing the cards effectively hiking up the price.
Considering the rarity of these cards for the Mac and the initial price offering they had of USD500-600, I think USD300-400 selling price for a card that can help revive the computer somehow is a good deal.
And that OWC link for USD330 may be steep, but it's not even available.
An option is to flash the PC card with a Mac firmware. If you want to go OEM route, then there is no other option.
Even eBay is leading the pack in prices with sales above USD400.00 for the Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL. In fact I just checked eBay today and see another similar card being sold. The way things are heading, looks like every incarnation of the card will bring it back to the original price when it was released. Wow.

  • Help with purchasing correct network card

Hi, I'm trying to set up a wireless network for a friend who has an IBook G3 purchased in December 2002 which I know makes it very old. I have a 802.11g wireless ADSL router successfully set up and the IBook can connect to the internet successfully through a standard network cable to the router.
I would like to connect to the router wirelessly so I would appreciate some guidance on the correct network card to buy for this model
    IBook G3 PowerPC Model A1005   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Welcome, Kosh-vorion
first check with the system profiler (Apple->"Abouth this Mac"->"more Info")then "network"->Airport card
whether there is already an airport card build in. if not, you need to buy it and install it; i don't know whether this is easy or not for an iBook to install. There is a manual here:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iBookG3_14inchUserGuideMultilingual.PDF
but i'm not sure whether it is exactly your model. (search the Apple supprt pages, if it isn't).
cost of the Airport card is something like 50 $.
If it is already installed, go to "system preferences"-> network and setup.
Post back, if you have more questions.
    success,

  • Asking for help with purchase of Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
I am looking to buy a 15" Macbook Pro for my 15-year old daughter.  The configuration I have found is:
    2.4GHz Intel Core i7 Quad-Core
    4GB of DDR3 RAM
    750GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1GB Graphics
    15.4" LED-Backlit Glossy Display
    1400 x 900 Native Resolution
    Slot-Loading SuperDrive
    802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
    FaceTime HD Camera, Built-in Microphone
May Ship with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion
Obviously for a teenager she will be using it for facetime and the like.  It would also be used for school work and games.  She is not a big gamer, but does like the Sims 3.
My first question is are the specs ok?  And other than the memory, which I plan to upgrade to 8, is ther anything I should look for?  Is 2.4 ghz enough or do I need to get a faster processor?
    Thank you in advance,
    George

It appears that you have selected a refurbished late 2011 MBP.  About three weeks ago I got may late 2011 17" refurbished MBP.  Excellent machine and it is the third refurbished one I have gotten.  I consider that a fiscally prudent approach in purchasing a MBP.
The MBP that you have chosen is a good performer and the addition of RAM is a wise move. I think your daughter should be just fine with this unit.
Mt Lion is new to me and there are several aspects that do not thrill me.  If the MBP is shipped with Lion, do not be in a rush to upgrade but DO get the upgrade code so that if you do decide later to install the new OS, you will not have to pay for it.  Just to be on the safe side, query Apple support if there is a time limit to redeem the code.
    Ciao.

  • Help with purchase order detail

    Hello Experts,
I am currently trying to get information on a purchase order, but not having any luck.  I need to find the PO Number, and PO Approval Date.  I cannot find either of these.  I have tried using BBP_PD_PO_GETDETAIL, but have no luck with this.  here is what I have:
    move w_result-sc_guid TO lv_guid.
            CALL FUNCTION 'BBP_PD_PO_GETDETAIL'
             EXPORTING
               I_GUID                           = lv_guid
               I_OBJECT_ID                      = w_zwkflw_rep-object_id
               I_WITH_ITEMDATA                  = 'X'
               I_READ_FROM_ARCHIVE              = 'X'
             IMPORTING
               E_HEADER                         = ls_e_header
             TABLES
               E_ITEM                           = lt_e_item
All I have available is shopping cart number.  Can anyone assist please?  Thank you.

    hi,
try below steps to retrieve purchase order details from a shopping cart.
get the purchase order GUID in ET_HEADER_REL parameter of BBP_PD_SC_GETDETAIL fm using the shopping cart number or GUID.
then to get the purchase order details, use BBP_PD_PO_GETDETAIL importing I_GUID = purchase order GUID from ET_HEADER_REL.
    regards.
