Help with RAM upgrade (K8T Neo Platinum)

Hey everyone,
It's been a couple of years since I built my system (specs below), and I'm looking to upgrade the RAM.
I'd like to upgrade to 2 or 3 gigs and I'm not sure if I would want to keep my existing modules in place and use the empty slot.
Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks.
AMD Athlon64 3200+ (Retail)
MSI K8T Neo Platinum BIOS v1.3
Corsair XMS 3200CL PRO (2x512)
Leadtek Geforce 6800 GT 256MB
Creative Audigy 2 Platinum
NEC 2500A DVD-ROM
2x 80GB Hitachi SATA (RAID 0)
Antec TruePower 430
Antec P160 Case

You can buy a 2 gig kit of the same type that you have if you want to upgrade to 2gig.  There is very little need for more than 2gig of memory, unless you are using it for memory intensive work.
If you get a 2gig dual channel kit, then a future upgrade to a socket 939 means that you won't have to buy memory.

I'm trying to upgrade it to 8Gb. I bought two 4Gb memories from Kingston.
When I put the two new memories, my mac doesn't turn on (actully it does, but it doesn't load).
But if I put either of the new memories with one old ones it works.
    Help!!!!!

    The memory I bought is a 4Gb DDR3 1333 Kingston KVR1333D3S9/4G (PC3-10600 CL9 204)

    2x2 Gb DDR2 800MHz Kingston
500 watt (absolute) power supply (taken form an old HP workstation)
    windows 7 X64
    Everything's on stock setting
Its been almost 1 & 1/2 years since i bought this rig, and from first month itself i have been having problem with the ram. The problem is not with the sticks, its with the ram slots. There are different things that happen. Sometimes when i boot my system:
    1) either, it wont start, i.e. no boot screen.
    2) It will load upto windows startup screen, crash and restart in an infinite loop.
    3) It will load windows, then crash after sometime.
    4) If i run any memory diagnostic, it will give errors.
At these times, i take out my 2 ram sticks, tinker with them, place them in different combination of ram slots, try push them in, in a certain way, keep trying until it yields and it boots up again ( generally a process of 1/2 an hr to an hr). After this my system will work fine ( no errors on any memory diagnostic) and boot properly for a week or 2, maybe even a month, but then again the same problem happens. I know for sure that there is no problem with my dimms (have checked them in other system and they work fine), its something to do with ram slots, or memory bus-controller structure.
Recently the problem happened again, though my tinkering didn't help. My system only boots up if i place any of the ram sticks in the 3rd slot (the 1st orange one). It wont work for any other slot and neither will it work if i place both of the sticks together. I have tried resetting my bios as well cmos settings, but it has not helped. My mb is still in warranty, but if i give it for repair, it will be gone for a good month or so, which doesn't go well with me. If someone has any suggestions, or a way out, it will be highly appreciated. Please help!

yes the psu has a single +12v rail with 21A rating, but somehow i don't feel the problem is because of it. When my system successfully boots, it works properly. I can play or work on high performance softwares for any number of hours without fail, which ought not to happen if the psu is bad.
Hmm, you are ignoring the possibility that your PSU is "flaky" (that's a technical term)!!!! You've never had any gizmo where "sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work"?
If you don't want to buy a new PSU then at least beg-borrow-steal another one and see if your symptoms change.

    thanks

Those are what's usually called memory timings.  Before you try adjusting those numbers, you should try clocking the RAM down from 200 to 166 in the BIOS and see how that works.  Also try to set your RAM at 2T instead of 1T and see what that does.
If you want to mess with the timings, the following comes directly from this post: Overclocking Guide
    "Memory Speed
Memory speed is often tied to the FSB. For example, a Double Data Rate (DDR) 400 memory has frequency 200MHz and the module rating is PC3200. Half the performance increase you may see from overclocking a CPU comes from increasing the speed at which the processor can talk to the memory.
When you buy memory, you may see it has label 2-3-3-7-1T. And you may also hear people saying my memory is a 2-3-3-7 one. But what does it mean? The answer is:
CAS Latency = 2 clock cycles
tRCD = RAS to CAS delay = 3 clock cycles
tRP = RAS Precharge = 3 clock cycles
tRAS = Active to Precharge = 7 clock cycles
Command Rate = 1 clock cycle
Different motherboards may call the above differently and not all of them will appear in the BIOS. You may need to check with your motherboard’s support team and the motherboard manual. If you have any option above in your BIOS, you can also start to adjust them. Obviously, the smaller the number the faster the memory will be.

    AND
    Memory Roundup
    AND
    http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2223
Keep in mind that this RAM you are using has already been reported as not working well with this mobo.  In addition, when you have to start tweaking BIOS RAM performance down from the defaults, just to get it to work, it's not generally a good thing and means you're RAM is not up to snuff.
    But good luck with it.

  • Help with system upgrade for CS6

Hello. I am hoping you can give me some advice on what to do (or buy) to improve my video editing system.  I am a bit of novice when it comes to the technical/hardware end of things and I’m having some issues with my current system.
I working in Adobe CS6 Master Suite on a Windows 7 Ultimate PC.  I mainly use Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Audition.  I create very complete animations and videos with many layers and effects (via Boris & Red Giant).  I also use Skype to record group video calls (with the program Evaer) for a reality T.V. recap show which I also edit with my Adobe suite.  However I have two main problems.
When I render out a 20 minute premier pro project (with several HD video layers and effects) it takes almost 13 hours.  It seems like this is very long considering my high end components, and set up.  For example I run ONLY my OS off an SSD.  My programs are on another SSD.  The files I use for the video are on another HDD, and I render to another HDD.  I was told by keeping all the aspects on separate hard drives it would speed everything up.  Is that true?  I also am now reading that rendering to a SSD would speed things up.  Should I consider changing my workflow/hard drive set up that way?
My other problem is that when I record my Skype group calls of 4 people (with Evaer) to my SSD the audio is always off when I bring it into Premiere.  I don’t know if this is a problem with Evaer, a codec (it records it as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Codec.  At 1280 X 720 and 30fps), that SSDs auto compress files, or that my system just cant handle it.  Plus Soundblaster & Nvida both seem to active as audio features on my system I don’t know if that effects anything.  Is there any advice any of you have on this issue as well?  Perhaps another program to record skype or group calls?
Finally… all that aside.  Considering the work I am doing should I just upgrade my system to a better Mobo and graphics card.  I see a lot of people are recommending a dual processor work station.  If so what is a good motherboard, and processor(s) I should get if I build my own workstation?  I have about $4000.00 I could invest in building one if you think would greatly improve my work flow and render times.  I also have a quadro k5000 on the way, and id like to be able to use the memory I have already.
I realize I am asking a lot of questions.  I would truly appreciate any help, advice or just a point in the right direction.  I have included my current system specs below incase that helps with any of my questions.  If you have any other questions or need more information just let me know.  Thank you again in advance for any help you can provide.

    Eric,
I would hardly call the Quadro card an upgrade to a GTX 680!
Regarding getting more speed from a faster MB / CPU, since you already have a 6-core rig with 24GB of RAM I would think that any gains you would get would not be that dramatic.
Check out your cpu usage (Task manager) and see how busy your cores are during a test render. I am guessing that the Boris and / or Red Giant effects could be jumping your projects from gaining the full multi-core capabilities of the Adobe software.

  • Problems with RAM upgrade iMac G5 1.8GHz

    Stuck - Need Help!
I've previously upgraded up iMac to 2 500Mb RAMs and felt recently that it needed that little bit extra, so I ordered two 1Gb chips from crucial.
Followed instructions to T, but with the two new chips in, the machine won't load.
Interestingly, it boots up with the following RAM combinations
    old 500MB + new 1GB (in any combination) - recognised as 1.5GB
one new 1GB RAM (again either one) - recognised as 1GB
I spoke to crucial who said that as the RAMs work individually, there isn't a problem with them, it could be a Firmware issue. I've upgraded all my software, and don't know what to do next?
Anyone overcome a similar problem in the past?
    Thanks

I'm experiencing something very similar to shaow. I'll share my experience in gory details - sorry for the long post but I've spent more hours trying to stabilize. I should have worked the hours at walmart and bought a new iMac with the money I could have earned
    Anyway, here goes:
Two iMac G5 1.8Ghz 17" (both Fall 2005 model), will call one A and the other B.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: A, config working fine: both a config using 1GB slot 1, 256MB slot 2 and a single 1 PC3200 1GB stick. OS X 10.4-10.5.7. No problems. I did have the motherboard replaced under warranty after having sleep problems - capacitors were expanded. No problems since that motherboard swap.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: B, config working fine: 2 x 256MB sticks. OS X 10.3.9
Ordered 3 PC3200 400Mhz 1GB sticks from Data Memory Systems.
    Upgraded A: Added 1GB stick = 2GB total
Upgraded B: Removed both 256MB sticks from B and added two 1GB sticks = 2GB total
Booted B, experienced gray screen of death with the multi-language crash message - somethign like: 'Please hold down the power button and restart'. Power cycled B, booted off a retail box DVD of OS X 10.5.6. Began upgrade to 10.5.6. Gray screen of death part way thru upgrade. Power cycled, gray screen of death again during early boot phase.
Decided to run tests on B. I could not locate the Apple Hardware Test (neither on system dvd 1 nor on a separate DVD). I resorted to using TechnoTools Deluxe which was included with AppleCare box. No hardware problems found including on the 2GB memory.
Removed both new 1GB sticks, pulled older working 1GB stick from A and installed into B. Completed upgrade with just 1GB memory on B to 10.5.6 and subsequently pulled down all updates for OS X 10.5.8. Powered down, added second 1GB stick to B, booted into 10.5.8 successfully. Repaired disk permissions, restarted. Began using applications, then after only about 5 minutes experienced gray screen of death. Powered down, removed new 1GB stick, replaced with one of the two remaining new 1GB sticks. Read about reseting PRAM/NVRAM. Followed steps to reset PRAM then decided to do the reset NVRAM within openfirmware. Started back up and logged into 10.5.8. Ran several applications - did not experience gray screen of death after about 20 minutes use. Have not had time for further tests on B yet.
Back to my saga with A (my original iMac G5 that was working fine with 1GB stick on 10.5.7):
Called Data Memory Systems and they sent me a replacement for the 'bad' 1GB stick.
While I was waiting for the new 1GB stick from DMS, I was struggling to get machine fully updated. Software Updater was failing with the weird network error (network was fine) and after following steps to troubleshoot, I backed up the user accounts and decided to reinstall OS X fresh from the 10.5.6 retail box (family license). Finally, I had OS X 10.5.8 all fully updated on the 1GB iMac G5 (A).
New memory arrived, installed 2nd 1GB stick. Booted up, immediately I got the gray screen of death. Restarted, booted up got about 5-15 minutes use then gray screen of death. Puzzled, I called DMS who said unlikely I got 2 bad sticks. They suggested I try memtest. So I did...
So on A, I first ran memtest from single user mode on the 2GB config. It crashed immediately with some 'Unexpected' error. Did not look like a memory error. I powered down, removed 2nd 1GB stick, and ran memtest from single user on the 1GB stick. Ran all tests 3x over a couple hours - no problems found. Retested after swapping the 1GB stick for the other. Both tested fine. Installed both sticks again and ran memtest all tests, one pass (didn't want another 6 hours lost) on the 2GB config, and all tests passed. Booted up and got gray screen of death - I don't recall if it was on bootup or after running but I ran fsck with no disk problems found, then restarted, logged in, ran disk utility to repair all permissions. Some repairs were made. Restarted A, reset PRAM and NVRAM again, booted successfully.
I haven't had much time to run extensively apps on A yet. It's sleeping as I type this on another mac. My next test will be to reset SMU.
I'm starting to wonder if the original iMac G5 has firmware problems that would prevent it from being unstable with two 1GB sticks??? My experience on two identical models of iMac G5 plus reading this post with VERY similar behaviors and after all the normal tests. I've concluded the memory is A-OK and something more sinister is lurking...
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

  • Kingmax Hardcore DDR500 with MSI MS K8N Neo Platinum (Bios Version 1.40)

    I am interested in Kingmax Hardcore DDR500 (PC4000) 512MB DDR-SDRAM. Currently, I’m using MSI MS K8N Neo Platinum (Bios Version 1.40) with AMD 64bit 2800+ & MSI MS 8907 FX5200-TD128 AGP Card.
Please advice whether the Kingmax Hardcore DDR500 (PC4000) 512MB DDR-SDRAM compatible with my systems.

The "safe mode" that the BIOS message refers to is not related to Windows' Safe Mode. The BIOS safe mode lets you un-do any overclocking or memory settings that might make your computer so unstable that you can't even get into the BIOS settings to change them. In that case, you hold insert while powering on to reset the BIOS to default safe values.
As for your problem getting into Windows' Safe Mode. If you upgraded from another motherboard that uses a different chipset, or if you somehow got the wrong chipset drivers installed, then the old AGP GART or chipset drivers will cause the system to halt/reboot very early in the Windows boot process even in safe mode. I've run into this problem before and its tricky. Best thing to do is switch back to the old motherboard, then go into safe mode and remove all chipset-related drivers, and then switch back to the new motherboard. If you can't do that, try running system repair from the windows setup CD. And failing that, you'd probably have to fully re-install the OS.

  • Need help with ram on bootcamp

hey guys i need help with getting more ram on the pc side of bootcamp.
it says i have 1.99 of ram on the pc side
then on the mac i got this
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
wanting to know how to get more ram over to boot camp

    Rodney:
You cannot physically or via software add/move RAM from OSx side to Windows side. This is because you run Leopard and Windows separately and therefore when one is running the other is not active. The only thing that controls how much RAM Windows sees/uses is determined by the type of Windows you have installed (32BIT or 64BIT). Please do not confuse that with Gigabytes of RAM or disk space.
32BIT Windows has a maximum limit of 3GB of RAM (it often uses only around 2GB of RAM when it is sharing the system RAM with your video card. I believe this is the case with you.
64BIT Windows will be able to sees/use all of your 4GB of RAM.
Leopard sees/uses all of your 4GB of RAM.
If you have installed Windows XPSP2 and it is working properly on your boot camp partition then I can assure you that it is the 32BIT version.
FYI - The only time that one can select/decide how much RAM Leopard uses and how much RAM Windows uses is when one is running Windows as a Virtual Machine under software such as Fusion or Parallels. I have assumed that you are running windows on a boot camp partition (from your posts) and therefore this does not apply to you.

  • 3 beeps with ram upgrade

My Macbook beeps after installing ram upgrade. Doesn't matter what maker. I know that all the specs are right but I keep getting the 3 beeps to indicate the banks are empty, not that it's incompatible RAM type. What do I do now?

When I put the old memory cards back in, it starts but only showing half the RAM. When I switch positions (slots) for the cards, the empty banks also switch positions so that seems to indicate a problem with one of the original cards now also. Am currently the hardware test. Just done in record time, "no trouble found." However, profile is showing only half the RAM actually installed.

  • New computer help, AMD 64 3200+/K8T-Neo

Recently, I purchased a new computer, or I should say part of one(AMD 64 3200+, MSI K8T-Neo, 1.0gb ddr400, 2x seagate 80gb serial ATA150, and a radeon pro 9800) to replace my old one(800mhz AMD Duron, BCM Mainboard, 64mb ddr Geforce2 Ti-Pro, 512mb PNY sd133, etc etc.) Well I decided rather than paying more for optical drives, I'd just use the ones I had in my previous computer. One was a 48x cdrw(dunno the brand, Pacific Western or something along those lines, perhaps?) and a 12x dvd-rom. I connected the power cord, and the master ATA cable of the MSI motherboard to the burner, and the slave to the dvd. I booted it up, and My cd tray of my cd-burner popped out, but the "light" didn't blink like it always did when it started up in my old computer.. I thought it was odd and then noticed neither of my serial drives were recognized.. so after tinkering for a while I discovered the people I purchased the computer from weren't bright enough to connect the power cable to the SATA drives... they were both recognized, but when I tried to install windows, it wanted the disc in my cd-burner, and the burner's tray would just open and close.. wouldn't read anything/light wouldn't blink.. so I disconnected the power to it and tried just setting my dvd-rom to master, with no slave ATA drive.. When I did this it no longer recognizes my master SATA drive, any ideas on either?

    Hi
Deep breath, I think I've understood.
It sounds like bios settings, and the SATA drivers on the floppy.
If you have not already loaded your HDD with OS and DATA, I would start again,
First check the settings in BIOS, set to  SAFE DEFAULTS, then go to Integrated Peripherals, page 3-20 of the manual, if you use the VIA drivers for SATA, thats SATA 1 & 2, then disable the P20378 S.ATA controller, make sure the PATA IDE and SATA IDE are enabled, if PATA is disabled the IDE devices won't be recognised. Exit  and set Boot sequence to floppy, CD, HDD, enable other boot devices. exit and save.
Try your DVDs on cable select, the master on end of cable, I would try another 80 wire cable in case your is damaged.
Restart, when first XP blue screen press F6, later it asks to press S to load from floppy, follow prompts load both XP drivers, you will need to press S a 2nd time for the 2nd driver, at setup screen you should see all HDDs, partition, format , install
    Cheers

  • Any problem with Gainward 6800GT & K8N Neo Platinum? (sock754)

Hi all! I want to buy the k8n neo p., was reading this review:
    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=6&id=1247&pg=12
    The author write:
"One of the problem we encountered was the transistor positioning near the AGP slot. With extremely lengthy AGP cards, one of the capacitors located in that area may obstruct certain components on the graphics card. As such, users with large graphics cards might want to first test the installation of a graphics card before purchasing this motherboard."
I have a Gainward 6800GT Powerpack Ultra/2400 Golden Sample, the red model with double red fans, visible here http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gainward-ultra2400.html
Approx 21 cm lenght. There is any mounting problem with this graphic card and the K8N NEO Platinum?

In fact this is my fear
The cooler on my card is very big, but i don't want to eventually modify it in the future because it's in warranty. Someone know what is the height of the three damned capacitors? If i know the height, i can estabilsh if this gfx card can fit without troubles in the motherboard. I want an MSI   don't want to buy an Asus

Sometimes the board indicates grafic-card failure at post (8 beeps in a row).
After som trying it will work and windows will start. Games work just fine!
I should say that when i installed the new board my old 9600XT didnt work (8 beeps) And i had it replaced, and after getting the new 9600XT (RMA-return) it have worked just fine until a few days ago...

I also have a problem with the data execution (dont know it in english). explorer.exe is shutting down sometimes due to the data execution protection. No viruses according to nod32...

Maybe you should your memory module in DIMM2 (the other green one), if it's in DIMM1 right now. Or you could try another module, if possible.

  • My 1st iMac, need help with the upgrade to Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD

Hello all, my 1st post as a new Apple switcher!
I just received my new iMac 24" today, and I am not sure about the upgrade to Leopard. (Came pre-installed with Tiger, and came with a Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD). I have read about a few issues with the upgrade / re-install process to Leopard, stemming from the rumor that the Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD is not a full version, but an upgrade only.
First of all, obviously I am supposed to put in the "Drop-In DVD" and let it rip, but there are several options to pick from. One of them is upgrade, and another is to erase the hard drive and perform a clean install.
    My questions are:
If I perform the erase and install, I have heard that iLife 08 will not be installed. If so, where / how do I reinstall that and any other apps that are left out?
Secondly, in the future, if I need to re-install again, will this "Drop-In DVD" work because Tiger has been removed from the hard drive? Will I just pop in my Tiger disks like the old Windows stuff required?
I plan on just doing the upgrade, but I would like to know what to do in the future if I have to do an erase / install.
Thank you, and the iMac 24" is gorgeous!

Hey, I know what you mean.
I upgraded to Leopard after buying my first mac with Tiger.
I rang customer service and asked how do I install iLife 08 if I do a clean instal,l as when i upgraded my Safari would not play flash, quicktime or open certain websites. Also I had a very long load up period with Blue Screen which bothered me a lot. (I know I am fussy)
Anyway my brother suggested I use Pacifist to get the .pkg files from the Tiger boot disk. He took control of my machine as he has Leopard and did this for me remotely as I am not a wizard like him.
By the way that is a great feature of Leopard.
Anyway this worked for me, only iMovie would not start properly but when I download the updates to iLife 08 they all work perfectly now. Saved my 79 euro as well instead of having to buy again as I think iLife should be supplied on a separate disk, (bad form apple) as they know for many a clean install is likely if they experience serious issues upgrading.
Anyway pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ is worth a try if you can't afford to fork out for iLife again like me.
Just make sure you select all the iLife .pkg files and composer files. when it installs if the files are already there just click leave alone and it will install only what it needs. Then run the updates if you have any issues opening any of the programs such as imovie and this should replace any missing files.
I have open and run all the iLife programs and so far so good.

  • Strange issue with RAM upgrade: It works but it doesn't! Please help.

    Hello Everyone,
I have a very strange issue with my iMac since upgrading my RAM from 4 to 12 gig. When I first installed the new RAM it booted up and ran great. The next time I went to boot the iMac up it swtiched on but didn't get as far as the first white boot up screen. I tried turning it off and on a few times using the power on/off button but still no success. I decided to remove the RAM and reseat it. The computer then booted up again fine. Here's the problem though: when I went to switch my iMac on the next day it wouldn't boot up. Again, I took the RAM out and put it back in and the iMac booted up fine. I've checked the status of the RAM in the system profiler and it reports that everything is OK. So, I'm at a loss. Obviously, I don't want to go through this process every time I want to start up my Mac. Any ideas/solutions would be very gratefully received.
    Many thanks in advance.

I completely agree with you. It will be one of the 3 issues you outline. The machine was bought brand new and has never given me a problem. It is just the introduction of the new RAM that has started a problem. However, I did just risk a restart and it booted up fine. I don't know if a restart is any different to shutting down and then pressing the on/off button to start the computer. Maybe my last reseating has done the trick or maybe my thinking is flawed because restarting involves a different process to booting up by pressing the on/off button. I don't know.
In the part of the world I'm sitting in it's night time now so I will leave the diagnostics running and check the results in the morning. I hope the issue is now resolved anyway. This sort of thing takes me back to my dark PC days although in this case I know it's probably not the Mac's fault.
    Thanks again. Very much appreciated.
