Help with re-starting my intel imac after 10.4.6 installation?

Hey guys,
I am a UK intel imac user and I have a problem. I upgraded to 10.4.6 via software update this morning and everything seemed to be loading OK. On returning to the computer 5 minutes later I discovered an error message saying that update had failed. I then looked at the version tab under 'About this Mac' and it said 10.4.6. I then thought the best thing to do was simply re-boot. I now have a DOS screen with the following:
Darwin/BSD (JOnathan-Baileys-Computer--2.loc) (Console)
Login:
I have tried simply re-booting again as well as typing in my user ID and password to no avail? On typing in my user ID etc I get a blue start up screen and then I get the DOS screen again.
Any suggestions?
Incidently I forgot to remove my Audio Interface from the Firewire connection is this what probably caused the machine to throw a major tantrum?
Any help would be appreciated
Jon Bailey (UK)

Hi boxlight,
No, you are not the first to mention the issues you are now experiencing with the 10.4.8 update...
Here's what I would try: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateintel.html - you can run the Combo Update and see if that "fixes" any issues. There have been posts re: using the Combo Update which ended up fixing some software glitches...
You can also go here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html#Anchor-Manually-49575 - I use the Terminal method to run the Maintenance Scripts and my Mac runs better than new...
Good luck, Rick

Hold down the option key and select

can I start up an intel imac mid 2010 model running 10.74 with an external verbatim drive running os 10.6 so I can access data on some powerpc applications. If so any help on procedure would be great. thanks for any help

Yes, that model can be booted into Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later. Use the discs that came with the computer to install a compatible version of OS X for the model.

  • Kernel Panic with Netboot Across Subnet Intel iMac

I have a problem with trying to netboot a intel iMac across the subnet. It connects up goes to the spinning globe then the spinning globe stops spinning and I get a kernel panic.
I've tested that the mac can netboot in the same subnet as the netboot server. But I've got no idea why it's getting a kernel panic when trying to netboot across the subnet.

I've created the intel netboot image via the updated 10.4.6 "System Image Utility" and have enabled it via Server Admin.

  • HOW DO YOU GUYS DEAL WITH APPLE.. SO CONFUSING...NEED HELP WITH SPECS FOR PURCHASE OF IMAC 21.5

Hi guys, been reading your forums, blogposts, etc and am getting more confused.  I'm just a video girl trying to produce meaningful content through web videos for small to mid sized businesses and want to come over from the dark side.
Good news,, I dont need a super giant system,  I do simple editing for web videos, minimal graphics, no motion graphics, no animation etc. currently using CS4, will probably end up with 5.5.
I want to get imac 21.5 or 27 if i have to..  So here's the question we all have,,, what do I really need besides an Apple fairy godmother to figure this crazy stuff out?????
I want to be able to have firewire add on, but the rest is what I need help with.   So i've been looking at cs6 specs, even though im not there yet, eventually will be,, so just need to run cs4 now and build from there.  I also want to eventually move to final cut down the road so I want imac able to upgrade to final cut.
WHAT DO I REALLY NEED MINIMALLY FOR NOW?  WHAT CAN I GET LATER IF i CHOOSE TO DO MORE AND NEED MORE POWER?
    cs6:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.6.8, v10.7, or v10.8**
    4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
4GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
Additional disk space required for preview files and other working files (10GB recommended)
    1280x900 display
7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended)
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (SuperDrive for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features
Optional: Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU-accelerated performance
Any responses would be great.  I know you guys are busy answering the really high end tech questions

All the current iMac models (both 21.5" and 27" with OS X Mt. Lion 10.8) will run CS4, 5.5 and 6 just fine.  They will also run Final Cut Pro X just fine.  Ditto for most any application you may want to use.
Below are some notes (specific to your apparent requirements) that may help you with your purchase decision:
Notes on purchasing a 21.5" iMac
All 21.5" iMacs come with 8GB RAM but you cannot add more later.  I strongly suggest getting the maximum RAM (16GB) when you order the iMac.
The basic hard drive is a 1TB 5400rpm drive.  It will work fine with Adobe CS but you will probably want the added speed of the optional 1TB Fusion drive for better performance. Some people will recommend/argue for one of the optional SSD drives instead, but they are very expensive and still only come in relatively small capacities - I don't recommend the SSD drives.  Get the Fusion drive and spend any extra money on a good external hard drive for backup and/or extra storage instead of an SSD.
Notes on purchasing a 27" iMac
All 27" iMacs come with 8GB RAM and you can add more later, up to 32GB
The basic hard drive is a 1TB 7200rpm drive - it will be fine with Adobe CS.  There are upgrade options to a 3TB 7200rpm drive or a 1TB or 3TB fusion drive - these will be fine also.  There are also SSD drive options, but I do not recommend them. (Same comments as above.)
Notes on all the current iMacs
iMacs no longer come with built-in CD/DVD drives.  If you need one, you will need to purchase the Apple Superdrive accessory drive ($79)
All of the iMac graphic processors (GPU's) are compatible with Adobe CS 4, 5.5, 6
It is very difficult to impossible to change or upgrade the hard drive later on, so don't buy low-end thinking you can add a better internal hard drive later.
Be aware that Macs always come with the latest (most recent) version of OS X.  And OS X Mavericks (10.9) is due to be released soon (in the next month or two).  There is no guarantee that the older Adobe CS 4 or 5.5 versions will run on OS X Mavericks.  If you cannot upgrade to CS 6 in the near future, you may want to purchase now rather than after OS X Mavericks is released.
For what it's worth, I'd recommend the 27" iMac if your budget can afford it.  You will appreciate the larger screen size and added capabilities over the years you will use the computer.

  • External hard disk for use with quicksilver 2002 and intel imac 24"

i am wanting to purchase an external hard disk to be used with both a g4 and an intel imac 24".
i am considering a seagate barracuda 500gb or 750gb and purchasing an external case separately.
    interfaces - usb2, firewire 400 and 800.
Do I need a case with the "oxford chipset" to have it work.
Are all seagates compatible these days.
I was looking at a ultra ata100 hard disk. Will this disk connect automatically to the enclosure or will additional cables be required
Is the Ice Cube Generation II Ide enclosure ok to use.
    Appreciate any help given
    dual 1 gig G4, Intel 24" Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi-
The Ice Cube uses an Oxford chipset, (part of the external housings onboard controller) so it should be fine. The Oxford chipset has been shown to give the best compatibility and performance, thus being an desirable feature.
    http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2307.htm
Using a Seagate Ultra ATA 100 drive should give you good, quiet, reliable service. There are no problems with the Seagate ATA drives.
Using the drive and housing with firewire will give you the best results, and firewire will allow you to use a bootable backup on the external drive, should the need be.
The housing comes with all the necessary cables to connect and use your external drive.
Insert the hard drive into the housing, connect the power and the firewire, format the hard drive, and you are ready to go..........

  • Iphoto can't import .CR2 shot with manual lenses on intel imac

I'm shooting with a Peleng 8mm on my Canon REBEL Xt, it is a manual lens and my problem is that all the pictures shot with regular EF lenses can be imported in iPhoto, but the ones shot with the Peleng freeze the import process. I got this problem on 2 different intel iMacs, never on the PPC ones. and only with CR2 (raw) pics. JPEGs are imported, whatever the lens I shot with.
My idea is that manual lenses do not feed information to the camera. (regular EF lenses inform the camera of their aperture and approx. focus distance). Consequently, the EXIF in the CR2 file has no values for the aperture and focus distance. I think the problem comes from that, but I was wondering if nobody knows a workaround. I did file bug reports, twice.
if someone want to give it a try :
    http://homepage.mac.com/karimc/iphoto_bugreport.zip
CAUTION: when you try to import the above file, iphoto hangs, you have to force-quit it and delete the contents of the "Import" folder in the iPhoto Library. Only for the strong.

Try converting the files to DNG and import that format. It should work.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Cannot boot my Intel iMac after installing Snow Leopard on an external USB

I have an Intel iMac with Snow Leopard installed. I have several FW and USB external drives. When I installed Snow Leopard from the Apple install disc on one of the USB drives to act as a backup the system rebooted and the Apple logo appeared and then the spinning gear wheel. After a while the logo was replaced by a circle with a line through it. I booted back into the install disc and tried Startup Disc from Utilities and selected Macintosh HD with the same result. Then I restored the system on my internal drive (Macintosh HD) from Time Machine. Still no luck. Does any one have any ideas before I reformat and reinstall from the SL installer disc?

    Fred LaVenuta wrote:
Thanks for the replies. I was under the impression that Intel Macs can be booted with a USB drive
I just learned today that this is true from one of our Level 4's. PPC macs can't boot on USB drives and I thought that carried over to Intel, but I was wrong.
    Didn't mean to misinform you!
Ultimately, I reformatted my internal drive, reinstalled the OS and did a restore from my latest Time Machine backup with Migration Assistant. I didn't lose any data but the restore process took 3+ hours.
    Great! Glad you had success!

  • Need help with setting up a new iMac

I tried to use Migration Assistant to set up my new iMac. I transferred data from PPB G5 10.5.8 but MA hung at "less than one min. remaining" so I closed the window. Is there any way to erase what has been transferred and start over again with transferring from G5 to iMac? Can I partition the iMac disk to put Boot Camp on one disk so I can use my WIndows applications?

Personally I would just try to Migrate the data again, if it hangs just leave it to it, its more than likely trying to work out where to put the files or even might be re-writting bits of data to move your files from the older OS to the newer OS, given that the file structures are bound to be slightly different. Give it a chance and see how it goes.
As for boot camp as fas as I know it comes with it installed so I don't see any reason you couln't install windows on the iMac, why you would want to it another matter.

  • Help with  inital start swf

Hi this is a problem that still has not been solved. Is there any expert out there that can help with a minor bug?
I read the names of images from a text file into an array.
    var MyImages:Array = new Array;
I have an event listener that triggers when this has been done.
    myTextLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, ImagesLoaded);
In the ImagesLoaded function I trace out the first item in the array
    trace(MyImages[0]); // = S_DSC_0106.jpg CORRECT
I then call loadImage(MyImages[0]) to put up the first image and at the same time start the timer. The reason for this is if the timer is 5 seconds, I would have to wait 5 seconds for the first image. Forcing the first image should get over that problem. When the timer first kicks it will get the second image. My problem is the very first image load fails with: SecurityError: Error #2000: No active security context.
Even though the trace() has correctly displayed the name of the first image in the array. This is a once off problem. The images carry on in a loop repeating without any problem. The code is displayed below. This problem is only that first image.

  • Performance and instability trouble with intel iMac after 10.4.8

    Hi all,
I have a 20" intel (Core Duo) iMac. Everything was super fast and nice since I bought it last February.
I recently "software updated" to 10.4.8 and since then it seems slower, groggy, and Safari crashes regularly.
Is this a known issue or is it just me? Is there anyway to uninstall 10.4.8? Or, can anyone recommend a utility to help diagnose the problem?

  • Problem with start-up on iMac after installing Leopard

I have recently installed Mac OS X 10.5.4 on my iMac and also installed Time Capsule. Now when I turn the iMac on I get the white screen with the grey Apple symbol and the small count down clock/circle for around 1 minute. Then the Apply symbol becomes a grey circle with a line across it (like a non-smoking sign). The fans in the iMac then start up and I have to do a hard shut down using the power switch. I have tried holding the Option key down after the Apple chime on start up and then attempting to select the drive. This worked once but has not since. Does anyone have any idea what I should try next? Many thanks.

I have the same problem. I read this:

And followed the instructions. Basically my problem is that when the system boots, it goes into the desktop but not quite, and then reboots again with the gray screen, then shows the desktop again for a small amount of time, then reboots again.
So I started from my OSX DVD 1 and ran the Disk Utility as recommended. Ran the "Repair Disk" twice. Then ran the "Repair Permissions" twice. (It showed some messages like "ACL found but not expected in /Library" etc).
When I reboot, it still has the same problem. Won't show my desktop at all.
What else can I do now? What is that ACL issue and how can I fix it (or do I have to - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 )?
Never had these issues with even the lesser OSes like Windows
    Thanks for any pointers!

  • Help with at start up folder that  flashes between ? and Mac OS Icon.

So I have an eMac that had Mac OS X 10.3.5 on it. About a week ago a software update came over on my Mac for 10.3.9. I tryed to download it and upgrade my OS. Somewhere along the line something crashed and I tryed to revert back to my 10.3.5 after that I turned off my Mac and turned it on again and I got the darwin screen. Now I dont have the original OS disk that came with this Mac, I got it off a friend of the family. I did have a Power Mac G5 OS X 10.4 CD that I was able to get into the CD by holding down C when started up. the Disk First Aid said everything was fine, and I tryed to install that and it told me that I could not install this software on my Mac. So someone I work with told me to erase the drive in the First Aid menu and the computer will reboot the OS. So I Erased the hard drive and went into the menu that lets you choose the start up OS and that did not load. Now when I turned on my eMac it just goes to a screen with a folder that blinks back and forth between a question mark and a Mac OS Icon.
Another person I work with has a Mac OS X 10.3 CD and said that should get everything up and running again , but he has not found it yet. Last night I tryed my parents iMac OS 10.2 CD and that CD will not load when I hold down C when I start the Mac.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

More accurately, this should read "...that will "only" run on that particular computer model." Those disks are always gray in color.
Generally, a Mac will not accept/run an OS version lower than the one it shipped with.
The Hobo is exactly on target when he asked for the specific model. There are two distinct generations of eMacs and that can affect recommendations. We can better help you if we know which one.
I'm a little confused about the disks. Did any of the disks you're tried or will be borrowing come from an eMac? Did your eMac come with 10.3 pre-installed or did you upgrade from an older version of OSX?
It's a little late in your case, but I have a way of dealing with Software Updates (SU) that's never (knock wood) killed any of our 13 Macs: When a system update is first offered, I don't let SU install it then. I finish what I was doing, closing all active applications, then use Disk Utility on my hard drive to Repair Permissions (RP) BEFORE I allow SU to install anything. Then I run it again AFTER SU finished. Permission repair is controversial but harmless, but I'm doing something right that has kept me from having update problems, so I keep doing RP before installing any updates that SU pushes out.
