Help with recording audio

I am trying to record an Alesis Micron synth into Logic. I have both cables in audio out on the Micron and they are plugged into the two inputs on my Presonus Interface. Logic recognizes the interface and inputs but there is not sound when playing the synth or recording. I have record enable and monitoring on and I still cannot get any sound. The volume on my interface console is turned up as well The Micron works when plugged into an amp so it is not the problem. I am new to Logic so any help would really be appreciated.

You stated monitoring on, do you mean software monitoring in preferences if so thats cool. Now when you create new audio tracks select input monitoring along with your other settings or click on the i button on your previous tracks see if that works

  • Need Help with "recording" audio to ADAT.

This is what I'm working with. Logic 9 to Saffire Pro 14 interface to Alesis ADAT 24.
I want to "record" audio to the adat. I want to have three tracks in a single song on the ADAT, lines 1,2,3. I have outputs 1,2,3 fromt the interface running to ADAT inputs 1,2,3.
In logic I have the tracks outputs set to mono 1,2,3. the ADAT is picking up all three tracks (all three meters are showing life). However, I am getting no sound out of output 3 (and therefore it is not recording into the ADAT) and I believe that 1 and 2 are coming in as stereo. Anybody know what I am doing wrong? I need this to run our tracks live for our show tomorrow and am having the worst luck!
(p.s. the interface only has four outputs.)

The Saffire comes with a software applet (setup program) doesn't it. Maybe you have to set up the 4 individual outs there, it may be set to send only stereo out.

  • Help with Optical Audio, w/X-Fi Elite Pro, and Logitech Z-5

    Hi,
I need help with optical audio on my X-Fi Elite Pro, and Logitech Z-5500 speakers. I have everything connected, and sound comes out, but NO 5. Surround. This is pissing me off beyond belief. I have it all connected, and set to 5. Surround, and on my Logitech's I have it set to opical in, and have tried ALL effects, stereo, strereo 2x,[Dolby Sign] PL II Movie, [Dolby Sign] PL II Music. I have tried the sound card set for an external decoder, and the sound cards' decoder, and tried both with all optical settings on the sound card. It doesn't give me surround with optical... And I would REALLY appreciate help.
My drivers are up to date.
    Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!

Except if you send DD/DTS multichannel sound to your receiver, you'll not have surround sound with digital connection. did you read the stikies?

  • Need help with Conditional Audio

Hello again! So early on into a course, after a couple intro slides, I have a sorting slide to direct users to other parts of a course (self-led learning in a way). However, I have an audio narration that plays on entry to that slide (not slide audio, it plays via advanced actions). I'm trying to figure out a way so that once they have viewed that slide once and heard that audio the first time, any time they get sent back to this sorting slide, they don't hear the audio again. How might this be done?
What I have already tried: I've tried two things, first I set up a variable called Sort_Audio. On exit of the slide previous, Sort_Audio would be assigned a value of 10. On entry to the sorting slide, an advanced action would check if Sort_Audio is equal to 10. If it is, it plays audio (and clears another variable that is unrelated, I just needed to do both things, so I combined them). I have On Exit from the sorting slide an advanced action that resets Sort_Audio to 0 so that when a user gets sent back to that sorting slide, it would theoretically not star the audio. Problem with this in the first place is for some reason it won't even play the audio the first time.
The other thing I tried was quite similar, but instead of assigning values to slides I tried cpInfoLastSlideViewed and equalled it to the name of the previous slide, as well as doing the same thing for cpInfoPreviousSlide. Neither seemed to work.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

The problem is resolved. Using TTS, the audio went onto the slide. I had not removed it from the slide audio so that the Advanced Action could work. Lieve, I got it to work by being extra careful to get each step correct and complete and assuring that the slide didn't have audio attached to it. Rod, I could not get the test project to work with audio attached to a smart shape. I believe it is because I am not controlling visibility of the smart shape--a logic test for another project and another day.
Here is what I finally got to work:
I created a project to get the procedure working before I put it into the big project. Here is a description of the test project.
Slide one has a smart shape (not used as a button) and a button which goes to the next slide. There is slide audio that plays when the slide is viewed.
Slide two has a smart shape that is used as a button to go back to slide one.
First Test with simple Advanced Action (no increment of variable):
    Variable used is called "v_visit"
Conditional advanced action is called "checker"
If v_visit is equal to 0
Then Play Audio "text to audio X" (created with TTS. I also tested it with recorded voice in a second test, "RecordingX.wav")Assign v_visit with 1
    Else Continue
Slide one, on enter, execute Advanced Action "checker"
                        on exit, No Action
Second Test with different Advanced Action (variable increments):
    Variable called "v_counter"
    Advanced Action (conditional) called "menuAudioChecker"
    First condition ("setCounter")
If 1 is equal to 1
    Then Expression v_counter = v_counter + 1
    (Else not used)
    Second condition ("checkCounter")
If v_counter is equal to 1
Then Play Audio "Text to AudioX" or "RecordingX.wav"
    (Else not used)
Slide one, On Enter Execute Advanced Action "menuAudioChecker"
    On Exit, No Action
On this "Second Test" I added a smart shape to display the contents of v_counter and it counts as expected. As Lieve has indicated in other posts, if one desired a different audio to play based on the value of v_counter this would allow that to happen. In my case in the production project I could play audio associated with section 6 when they return to the menu after completing section 6.
Thank you for patiently working with me to resolve this issue (mostly due to my own oversights).
Most importantly, thank you for the excellent Advanced Action model to use for the project.

  • Help: Cant record Audio & Video

Hi People, I have a creative webcam Live pro and it seems that I cant record a video with BOTH Audio and Video but works absolutely fine if recording one or the other. To elaborate, when the "include audio" box is unchecked, I can playback the video with no problems, however, when I check the "include audio" box, the audio is played back ok but the video does not move at all ( it seems like its permanently stuck on pause). Can anyone help me ? Many Thanks.

    Ciao
you could launch the recording application, but it will not
within your FL app. Then you need to know the file name and
location since FL cannot browse the file system of the phone.
Also consider that this type of apps do not work for every
phone since some phones do not allow to execute other applications.
Here some tutorials that you can take a look at:

  • Help with recording setup

    Hi all.
I need help how to record directly from camera through firewire while I also record Audio from my firewire soundcard.
Right now I record the audio and some midi into logic.
Im using a macbook pro with only one firewire port.
Can I solve this buying a Firewire hub?
And Can I record directly from 2 cameras at once??
Hope you can help me, so I can start using my newly bought final cut pro.
    Regards
    Mujan84

The first question is why you would want final cut pro in this loop at all?  FCP is an editing application, not a production tool.
A firewire hub will not help.
Oe camera at a time.  You might think about putting a switcher into the equation.  Capture the switcher feed into FCP, and make sure both cameras are recording as well.  Then you can go back in and correct any missed switches or re-edit what you did on the fly if it seems right to do it.
Remember that capturing live into FCP is the weakest link in your chain.  All you need is to trip over the power cable and you are hosed.
If you find the right mixer/switcher combo, you can feed the audio stream into another computer.  With multiple cameras, a switcher and two computers capturing information, time code is critical.  The best scenario is to send identical code to all devices-- that way you'll have no issues getting it in sync-- just match the numbers.  But at least make sure all devices are code-driven.

  • IllegalThreadStateException with Recording Audio

    Hello to all.
I am creating an RCP Application in Eclipse and I am in need of some assistance. I am trying to create a simple sound recording application so that when you push a record button, you can record audio. I looked at a simple recording tutorial and it worked great the first time but when I have my application running, it will only record the first time you push the button. If you press the record button again, it will give me an IllegalThreadStateException.
I did some light research and noticed that you cannot restart a thread, only create a new one. My question is, am I going about this audio recorder the correct way? Here is the code for my AudioRecorder class. When my button gets depressed, it calls startRecording() and when it is pushed again it calls stopRecording().
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    public class AudioRecorder extends Thread{
         private File out;
         private AudioInputStream in;

  • Help with recording measurement

    Hi all,
I'm trying to take voltage/current/resistance measurements from a Keithely sourcemeter and plot them on charts. There's also the option to record the measurements upon pressing the "record" button, which then would prompt the user for a path name. After the 'record' button is pressed again, the file is saved and closed. During the entire process of openning file, recording, and closing the file, the measurements should be plotted onto the charts uninterrupted.
I've used a state machine pattern, with the value of the 'record' button as input to decide the state transitions, used in a "select" gate. However, when I run the VI, the state transitions never happens, pausing the execution and probing the value of the button yields that its output stays the same regardless of the state of the button.
I've set the operation of the button to "switch when pressed".
I know this is a common task, but I'm pretty stumped about how to fix this. The VI file is attached, any pointer is appreciated.
    Thanks

The typedef enum will solve the problem of the names.  Once all sources (controls or constants) connected to the state wire in every case and outside the loop are all copies of the same typedef, the names will return.
What happened was that you changed one of the enums or created a new one.  It had a different data type.  Yes, it was still an enum and still produced a U16 integer, but because the items in it were different, it was considered a different data type.  When two different data types are connected to the wire going to the selector terminal, the case structure attempts to find the common "denominator", in this case a U16 integer, but not the enum.
I converted the enum constant you had with "record" and other values to a type def and copied it several times.  When I replaced all the other state enums with that type def enum, the names came back.

  • Help With Recording both Microphone and Audio Playback Simultaneously

I am trying to record both my own microphone and another audio source at the same time. The other source is a VOIP program. When I try to set up a multitrack session I can only select either my Microphone or The sound card as my input for the tracks. When I try to set up one and then the other, I have to change my default input device from the audio hardware settings which then excludes the other device from being used. I am following the steps in these two videos here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAJ9rXepKZc
    and
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAJ9rXepKZc
    Thank you for your help.

Since Audition inherently uses ASIO, the windows driver you see in the hardware setup is translating the built-in driver information (not ASIO) to this standard. The ASIO4ALL driver, which you can download for free, has some advantages in this regard; it will let you see all of the devices connected to your system with valid windows drivers and possibly let you connect more than one at a time - although I'm not promising that this will work... (although it seemed to in the video)
The thing you have to understand about ASIO is that it bypasses a lot of the OS, and inherently will only ever work with one device at a time. Fortunately, ASIO4ALL counts as a single device, and to that extent, Audition doesn't care what's connected to it. You may yet run into difficulty though, because your mic and Windows internal hardware aren't synced together, and ASIO4ALL may regard this as an insuperable problem. The reason that I think it might work though is that your mic is a USB device, and the drivers for this are a little different. Normally we regard USB mics as being a right PITA, but in this case it might be your saving grace - I don't know.
The usual solution to this problem is to use an external sound device with more than just single inputs and outputs, and with an ASIO driver. This method doesn't use 'what you hear' at all, but routes the software feed from your VOIP package straight to one output, which you feed to a small external mixer. Into the mixer, you plug your external mic as well. The mixer output goes to another pair of inputs on your sound device, and this is what you record in Audition, generally you on one channel and the incoming caller on another (or you can use a stereo pair split left and right). The advantage of this is that you can monitor the call on the mixer, and once you have the levels set about right, just concentrate on the call - final level tweaking, which is invariably needed, is easy, because you've kept both sides of the converstation on different tracks.

  • Help with recording guitar on GarageBand using M-Audio Firewire Solo

Hello everyone. I hope someone can help me. I recently bought a new mac mini and M-Audio Firewire Solo to record music. I'm new at recording so I have no idea what to do.
The problem is when I record playing the guitar, the sound is so low, I can barely hear the guitar playing when I play it back. I turned the gain to maximum level and I still can barely hear the guitar record. I know it's recording because I can hear the guitar when I play the record back, but the sound is way too low.
The weird thing is that the microphone works fine and when I record vocals, I can hear the playback fine.
Did I miss anything? Is there a good setting for recording guitars using M-Audio Firewire Solo? Is it because M-Audio Firewire Solo is not compatible with the latest Mac Mini system?
    Please help! Thank you!

I connect the guitar to the guitar input that is in front of M-Audio firewire solo using this cable: http://www.livewire-usa.com/products/products.cfm?sBrand=adv . Then I turn gain up to the maximum level.
When I play the guitar, you know the bar that goes green on garageband (not sure what it's called)? Even if I strum really hard, the green never goes up past 1/4 of the bar. When I'm using the mic and speak a bit loudly, I can see that bar turning red. So it seems like it's not reading the input properly, but really I'm not sure, so hopefully you'll be able to help me
I'm actually using the mac mini's speaker to hear the sound, so I'm not sure if it's only coming from one speaker or not.
Sorry if I miss any important detail. I'm a newbie. And as always, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions!

  • Help with recording midi instruments : two sources at the same time

    Hi -
I'm trying to learn Logic after using Performer for years, and though the audio is fine, I just can't get the midi to work doing something really simple.
I have a MOTU midi express XT, which is an 8 channel midi interface. Piano plugged into channel 1, drumkit plugged into channel 2. I want to play both and record both, which should be easy, but I am stuck at the first hurdle.
So, new project, add a midi track for the piano, and select XT1 and plays and records fine. Add a track for the drums, and try to put it onto XT2, and now the keyboard plays the drums when I press the keys. Likewise, the drum kit triggers the piano. I have tried unchecked auto demix by channel but that doesn't help.
This ought to be trivial, but even with the manual, I cannot figure out how to simply choose midi input and output per track.
If anyone has a tip I would be very grateful!
    thanks
    Steve

    goldensteve wrote:
I believe that I have followed your instructions, but I am seeing the same result: both midi sources trigger (and record) each other. Hmm.
It looks like the midi channels are not set properly or something like that...
What kind of midi tracks have you created - Software Instrument tracks - if yes set their midi channels to 1 and 2 ? If you have created Standard Instrument objects and want to use them with external sound device check the midi channels of these Standard Instrument objects again in the Environment of in the Arrange track Inspector - they must be set to ch.1 and ch.2.
If you use a Multi Instrument set it to ch.All in the Environment and create tracks for its sub midi channels 1 & 2 in the Arrange.
The Autodemix by midi channel Logic setting must be enabled as Bee Jay mentioned as well both tracks must be armed "R" !
Go to Click & Ports Environment layer and have a look at the "Input View" Monitor to check the incoming midi channels of the external instruments. Play a piano note(let's say C2) on the first instrument which is set to ch.1 - you must see some midi message like:
    "1 C2 56" in the Monitor - which means ch1. Note=C2 vel=56.
Trigger a drum note (A2 for example) on the second instrument (Drums Set) on ch.2, so it must be shown as "2 A2 78" which confirms that the midi channel i.s OK. If not, then you must check you hardware settings again etc.
PS. If these re-instructions do not solve your problem, please provide a download link of this Logic project song so we can check up it. Make a short description on which tracks you try to record or just name them "Piano" & "Drum Set" something like that.

  • Help with Usb Audio interface

Hey guys,  just having major issues setting up my recording software to work in boot camp  my usb audiophile seems to be connecting and functioning with Windows 7 but the audio quality is really poor with distortion, i have seen that this is a regular problem and would much appreciate a solution or a link to one that would be a great help
my set up is a  imac running 0s x version 10.6.8  with boot camp running windows 7  32 bit  the  Usb interface is the M-audio  Audiophile
    Thanks

GT Player Express is a real-time standalone application allowing to use your computer at studio or on the stage as powerful guitar multi effect processor. It offers ReWire support, for connecting to ReWire applications such as Live or Reason. Track Recording support allows recording of the processed or clean sound. Recorded tracks are automatically added to the current playlist. GT Player is functional as a VST plug-in which can be used in all VST host applications such as Nuendo, Cubase, Live, DSP Quattro, Spark, etc. With Keyboard Transpose, MIDI notes can be triggered from your computer keyboard with transpose capability.
According what I read, this app is VST only, so it won't work with GB, sorry. GB uses AU (Audio Units) and not VST.

  • Need Help with Skipping Audio in Slideshows

I'm trying to burn a simple slideshow with iDVD of about 80 pictures, with an overlay .mp3 playing. I made the slideshow, and during the preview, the audio plays fine. But after I burned it, the mp3 skips slightly while the pictures change.
I initially thought the pix were too big, so I scaled them down from 400 to about 150 KB. But the second one had the same problem.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? It seems like what might be causing it is the page flip transition between pix. Is there any way I can keep the transition and get rid of the skipping? Thanks so much for the help.
I'm trying to finish this project ASAP, so thanks for the urgent response with any suggestions.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The disk image with DVD Player worked flawlessly.
That's what to expect from a burned DVD.
This just keeps getting more weird.
Not to me now that you're providing more info.
    Two items of interest:
1.) I then took the DVD to another player in my house and it worked great.
Not all players handle recordable DVDs very well. Especially if they're older than a couple of years. I've had the worst permormance from Toshiba.
2.) The DVDs are DVD-R, Memorex.
TDK and Memorex have BAD track records here.
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual

  • Help with editing audio files (please)

    hi there,
firstly sorry for posting in this section but i had no idea where else to do it.
i recently went to an acoustic gig and recorded some songs from it using a sony ericsson phone. i have blue-toothed the files to my mac. there are a few songs on each recording are two things i would like to do with these files.
    1. i would like to split the files so they are separate for each song.
    2. i would like to try remove as much background noise as possible i.e. crowd making noise, or at least focus it on the actual music being played.
i have download audacity but have no idea. i am looking for a possibly free way to do this and simple too. i am not going to go hardcore with the editing, just want to do it quick and easy.
any help much appreciated, thanks, ravi.

You need to import your song to iTunes first.
Than open Garage Band and click on bottom Right button (View/ Hide media browser).
Click on Audio>iTunes>Music, and choose the song you want to edit. Then Just drag to your board and this will open new track, you will see line running vertically on your screen, this is showing you at what measure your song will start, just move to the beginning of a track (if you drop it too soon, just "pick" it up again and move it). This is very useful when you are trying to merge several track (e.g. for your iMovie, as you have only two tracks on it).
Than Split and delete portion you don't want any more.
To Slit a track, adjust your measure where you want to split it and go to Edit>Spit.
    Hope this helps.
