Help with recording midi

I have an electric drum kit that i would like to hook up to logic express and use the drum pads to trigger the sound fonts that are one logic already. is this possible? i can get a midi to usb interface to hook it up into logic, but then what? is there a way to have mulitple midi channels recording at the same time? even if it wrote a 1 track containing individual drums, i could use the demix by note pitch on it, right? if anyone has any experience, i would appreciate it. even if anyone had any ideas on how to do it, i would appreciate that too.
thank you,
Stew

Hi Stew,
I do this and have the same computer and use a Yamaha DTXtreme IIs, Logic Express and FXpansion's BFD.
The "brain" of your e-drums can be MIDI connected to your Mac via an interface of some kind. Most drum "brains" that I'm aware of have yet to catch up to the digital world, unfortunately, and can't yet be connected directly into your Mac via firewire. Some have USB outs, but I've never used one that way. I suspect there may be latency issues with USB as well, but a lot of it probably depends on the drums you plan to trigger. I've never tried using it with the sounds in Logic Express or Garage Band or anything - although its just MIDI information to which you can assign anything anyway. I've never worked with the "environment" for MIDI in LE - it was all to complicated for me to figure out, so I bought FXpansion's BFD, which I love. It is probably the most intuitive drum sample program there is and the easiest to figure out, for my money.

  • Help with recording midi instruments : two sources at the same time

    Hi -
I'm trying to learn Logic after using Performer for years, and though the audio is fine, I just can't get the midi to work doing something really simple.
I have a MOTU midi express XT, which is an 8 channel midi interface. Piano plugged into channel 1, drumkit plugged into channel 2. I want to play both and record both, which should be easy, but I am stuck at the first hurdle.
So, new project, add a midi track for the piano, and select XT1 and plays and records fine. Add a track for the drums, and try to put it onto XT2, and now the keyboard plays the drums when I press the keys. Likewise, the drum kit triggers the piano. I have tried unchecked auto demix by channel but that doesn't help.
This ought to be trivial, but even with the manual, I cannot figure out how to simply choose midi input and output per track.
If anyone has a tip I would be very grateful!
    thanks
    Steve

I believe that I have followed your instructions, but I am seeing the same result: both midi sources trigger (and record) each other. Hmm.
It looks like the midi channels are not set properly or something like that...
What kind of midi tracks have you created - Software Instrument tracks - if yes set their midi channels to 1 and 2 ? If you have created Standard Instrument objects and want to use them with external sound device check the midi channels of these Standard Instrument objects again in the Environment of in the Arrange track Inspector - they must be set to ch.1 and ch.2.
If you use a Multi Instrument set it to ch.All in the Environment and create tracks for its sub midi channels 1 & 2 in the Arrange.
The Autodemix by midi channel Logic setting must be enabled as Bee Jay mentioned as well both tracks must be armed "R" !
Go to Click & Ports Environment layer and have a look at the "Input View" Monitor to check the incoming midi channels of the external instruments. Play a piano note(let's say C2) on the first instrument which is set to ch.1 - you must see some midi message like:
    "1 C2 56" in the Monitor - which means ch1. Note=C2 vel=56.
Trigger a drum note (A2 for example) on the second instrument (Drums Set) on ch.2, so it must be shown as "2 A2 78" which confirms that the midi channel i.s OK. If not, then you must check you hardware settings again etc.
PS. If these re-instructions do not solve your problem, please provide a download link of this Logic project song so we can check up it. Make a short description on which tracks you try to record or just name them "Piano" & "Drum Set" something like that.

  • Help with usb Midi controller on brand new machine! Please!!

I just unboxed my macbook pro 13" non-retina and updated to 10.9.1, installed a few of my apps, etc.    I'm having a meltdown over my midi-controller not being recognized. It is a Roland A-49 USB Midi Keyboard controller that is not powering on. It runs off bus power just fine in my older 15" MBP and also from my '12 Mac Mini. When I pull up the system profiler, under USB it reads to me:
How can I get this working properly?

Hi there, been a viewer of the discussions here for a while & felt compelled to finally sign up to hopefully offer some help with this problem as I had exactly the same when I first got Logic Pro.
The problem is more to do with the sound setup than the controller keyboard as logic is sensing midi data as you have seen in the transport.
I would suggest firstly (Hopefully Pro & Express are the same in these respects) clicking on the Logic Express tab in the top left, then Preferences, then Audio.
In the box that appears select the Drivers tab. Then make sure that the Core Audio check box is ticked. Under that make sure that you output source is selected (ie your interface if using monitors, or built in Audio if not)
    Hopefully this should help.
The simplest to test your sound is by clicking on the Audio tab (3rd or 4th along at top) & opening the Loop Browser, choosing a catagory & draging a sound onto a track.
Remember to click on the track you will be dragging onto to select it & in the Loop Browser Blue loops go onto audio tracks & green onto instrument tracks.
Now with testing the controler keyboard...
Click on an instrument channel, then goto the bottom left of the screen where you will see that channels fader.
Above the fader click on the I/O (you may have to click & hold here) choose either mono or stereo, then choose say the EXS24 & try you keyboard.
Hit * on the numeric keypad & play something, then hit space to stop & you will have your 1st region.
I hope this helps with you problem, Logic can be confusing at times but is worth sticking with.
    Good luck

  • Help with recording measurement

    Hi all,
I'm trying to take voltage/current/resistance measurements from a Keithely sourcemeter and plot them on charts. There's also the option to record the measurements upon pressing the "record" button, which then would prompt the user for a path name. After the 'record' button is pressed again, the file is saved and closed. During the entire process of openning file, recording, and closing the file, the measurements should be plotted onto the charts uninterrupted.
I've used a state machine pattern, with the value of the 'record' button as input to decide the state transitions, used in a "select" gate. However, when I run the VI, the state transitions never happens, pausing the execution and probing the value of the button yields that its output stays the same regardless of the state of the button.
I've set the operation of the button to "switch when pressed".
I know this is a common task, but I'm pretty stumped about how to fix this. The VI file is attached, any pointer is appreciated.
    Thanks

The typedef enum will solve the problem of the names.  Once all sources (controls or constants) connected to the state wire in every case and outside the loop are all copies of the same typedef, the names will return.
What happened was that you changed one of the enums or created a new one.  It had a different data type.  Yes, it was still an enum and still produced a U16 integer, but because the items in it were different, it was considered a different data type.  When two different data types are connected to the wire going to the selector terminal, the case structure attempts to find the common "denominator", in this case a U16 integer, but not the enum.
I converted the enum constant you had with "record" and other values to a type def and copied it several times.  When I replaced all the other state enums with that type def enum, the names came back.

  • Desperately seeking help with recording and playback error messages...

When I attempt to record a single track of audio (either with my internal mic or my Samson USB mic), I get the following message 15 to 30 sec into it:
    CoreAudio:
    Disk is too slow. (Record)
    (-10004)
And when I attempt to playback that single track of a little bit of audio I recorded, I get the following message:
This song has too many instrument tracks to be played in real-time.
I have tried all the steps to solve the problem under "Optimizing Garageband" in the Help menu and nothing has worked.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that anyone has as to how I could get rid of these messages and actually enable myself to record a full song at some point in the conceivable future...

I'm guessing that your computer is too slow to record
    real-time audio.
Of itself it should be fine - I still use a G3 desktop to record stereo with no problems at all - though GB may add an overhead. Still, this shouldn't be happening.
If you have other tracks playing
while you are recording this could be an issue,
especially if there are a lot playing.
    Yes...
    If this is the
case then you can lock the tracks playing by pressing
    the lock icon.
This won't make any difference to audio tracks, only to MIDI tracks, and in that case it reduces demands on the processor but increases demands on the disk - which appears to be the trouble in the first place.
I agree that you should consider
getting an external hard drive. You can set the
record path to the external hard drive
Since laptop disks are usually slower than external ones this might help - particularly if your internal drive is very full.
    which will
free up working memory to your computer.
No it won't, but it will take the strain off the internal disk, if that's what you mean. The memory might be an issue, which would be resolved by installing more RAM if possible.

  • Help with recording setup

    Hi all.
I need help how to record directly from camera through firewire while I also record Audio from my firewire soundcard.
Right now I record the audio and some midi into logic.
Im using a macbook pro with only one firewire port.
Can I solve this buying a Firewire hub?
And Can I record directly from 2 cameras at once??
Hope you can help me, so I can start using my newly bought final cut pro.
    Regards
    Mujan84

The first question is why you would want final cut pro in this loop at all?  FCP is an editing application, not a production tool.
A firewire hub will not help.
Oe camera at a time.  You might think about putting a switcher into the equation.  Capture the switcher feed into FCP, and make sure both cameras are recording as well.  Then you can go back in and correct any missed switches or re-edit what you did on the fly if it seems right to do it.
Remember that capturing live into FCP is the weakest link in your chain.  All you need is to trip over the power cable and you are hosed.
If you find the right mixer/switcher combo, you can feed the audio stream into another computer.  With multiple cameras, a switcher and two computers capturing information, time code is critical.  The best scenario is to send identical code to all devices-- that way you'll have no issues getting it in sync-- just match the numbers.  But at least make sure all devices are code-driven.

  • Urgent, Please help with new MIDI pedal

I just got an old awesome MIDI pedal the X-15 Ultrafoot. The pedal has two expression pedals and 10 pushbuttons/pushpads (as well as two buttons to scroll through banks, and a "mode" and "bypass" button).
What I want to is assign each pushbutton to a different parameter. I then want the expression pedal to be activated to whatever parameter I have selected. The problem is I do not know how to make the expression pedal exclusively control only the last parameter that was selected.
If somebody could help me with this I will be eternally grateful

    Hi Harm,
I tried moving the BCLK slider up to 140 in the following application provided by asus (its easier than in the BIOS) and the CPU went up from about 3450mhz to 3780mhz. The DRAM only went up to 562.  I dont think im understanding what you mean by 2:10 mermory timings and getting the memory up to 1800, becuase it seems that i would need to increase BCLK to much higher than it is in order to get the DRAM from 562 to 1800? Shall I try push the BCLK up higher to 150 (is it safe?)
Below is the result of moving the BCLK slider from 130 to 140. It only moved to 562 Mhz ? Please can you explain how one gets this figure to be in the range of 1800mhz to 2000mhz

  • Need help with Java MIDI and VST info

I am currently a college student for programming and I know programming very well, but for this current task, I am completely stuck. This is not a school project or work, just a personal project I'm working on at the moment to learn more about Java.
What I am trying to create is a VST (Virtual Studio Synthesizer) using Java for use in music programs such as FL Studio, Sonar, Ableton, and so on. I did alot of Googling and found the following program:
I got it working, but it's not quite what I am looking for (it's more like an on-site editor that you enter code into and then run it). I want to create a VST from scratch and learn what each thing means in the program. I've done some research on MIDI input and output and found the following in the Java documentation:
I figured I'm on track of what I'm looking for, but the problem is that the Java documentation simply sucks. It has no examples of code, how the functions work, and how I'm suppose to use them.
First off, I want to start with the extreme bare basics. Is it even possible to do a VST in JUST Java? I've seen and used examples of obtaining data from a MIDI file and playing it, but that's not what I'm trying to do. Second, how would I take MIDI data from a music program running the VST and enter the data into a text box? Once I'm able to do that, I should be able to work with the data to produce audio output.
My program I am attempting to make is a guitar synthesizer that I can run in music programs as a VST. If anyone around here knows anything about MIDI and VST plugins, please, post some example code and help point me in the right direction to creating something. I'm not looking to use other people's programs or code, I want to make something myself from scratch but I don't know where to start!

  • Help with recording audio

I am trying to record an Alesis Micron synth into Logic. I have both cables in audio out on the Micron and they are plugged into the two inputs on my Presonus Interface. Logic recognizes the interface and inputs but there is not sound when playing the synth or recording. I have record enable and monitoring on and I still cannot get any sound. The volume on my interface console is turned up as well The Micron works when plugged into an amp so it is not the problem. I am new to Logic so any help would really be appreciated.

You stated monitoring on, do you mean software monitoring in preferences if so thats cool. Now when you create new audio tracks select input monitoring along with your other settings or click on the i button on your previous tracks see if that works

  • Need some help with wine + midi

    Howdi guys!
I need some help. I'd like to run an application which is only available for Windows and OSX, so my choice is wine. This application needs to send midi signals to the hardware it is supposed to control.
In the product's forum there is a thread which shows how it can be done. But the newest releases of wine don't allow this, because it doesn't support jack anymore.
I think basically it doesn't matter which application it is I run in wine, the question is, is it possible to send midi signals in and out through wine? If so, how? Might be that it's quite trivial, in my defense I have to say that I never worked with midi before.
The soundcard I use is an Edirol UA-25 which is fully supported in Linux, midi works.
    Thanks for any ideas!
edit: Forgot two things: I know I could try older versions of wine or running it in a virtual machine, but I want to avoid this.
Last edited by Army (2012-04-27 07:15:33)

For that app, you will probably be using the ALSA-midi interface. So, you shouldn't require Wine to have jack support. - In fact, that picture clearly shows that Wine is using ALSA-midi, but he is using jackd + a2jmidid (which exposes alsa-midi 2 jack-midi).
As long as that software doesn't require a special driver, you should be able to use it. As for the specifics, i would imagine that you would start jackd, start a2jmidid and then start your application. - you also have to make sure your midi device is connecting before launching your app in wine - otherwise the device won't show up in your wine app. You also will need to select your midi interface in your application. After this, you should be able to connect your wine app (through the a2jmidi bridge) to your hardware.
But if for whatever reason you can't get it too work ~ i do actually use a VM for updating firmware on 2 different audio devices (a soundcard and midi-controller) - and it works great. I am using VMware, but i would imagine virtualbox would work very similar..

  • Help with recording voice

I would like to use garage band to record voice tracks of up to an hour long. I have a USB lLogitech headset with microphone, which appears in the GB preferences. I have checked the voice input on the System Preferences and turned it up and checked that the sound from the mike is registering. But it doesn't seem to be registering on garage band and nor is it recording. I read the GB help and turned on the little red thing in the track control panel, but nothing.
    I'm stuck.
    Any ideas?
    I'm running GB 2
    Thanks

    Hey Allie!
The problem is likely the compression that the station is doing to the stream for transmission... you might not be able to "fix" it the right way without looking at what they are doing to it, because if you send them OK audio, and it's monitored OK in FCP, but sounds bad over the air or whatever, then it's in THEIR court actually. But the EQ filters in FCP or Soundtrack Pro could be used to make your voice crisper sounding. Find the audio frequency of your voice and raise the highs and lower the lows a bit with those EQ filters. It's all real time too, so not hard to figure out. Try starting with the "Final Cut Pro" 3 Band Equalizer... just play with the settings during playback, and you'll see what it does... or for a further explanation, type "3 Band Equalizer" in the search box of the online help menu's User's manual.

  • Help with recording 2 tracks at the same time

Basically I recently purchased an Audio Interface (BEHRINGER XENYX Q802 USB) and I'm having trouble recording multiple tracks at the same time while using it.
When I set up 2 MONO tracks in my DAW (one using input 1, the other using input 2) all that happens is that I get a recording of one mic over both tracks in my DAW.
This is probably a beginner post and I have looked it up on YouTube etc. but it just doesn't work for me... Maybe it has something to do with my Interface, but any help will be much appreciated.

    Hi Pancenter,
Unfortunately I don't have the manual as I purchased it from a friend who failed to provide me with the Manual.
But thank you for answering as this was what I needed to do.
    Many thanks

  • Help with recording fuzzy guitars

I've recored a few tracks with Garageband over the past 2 months that I have had my imac. And apart from disappearing guitars on one track, the experience hasn't been to bad.
Now I'm looking for a heavier sound for some of my tracks but I can't seem to get that crisp heavy sound. I've played around for a few hours with the EQ's and the sounds that the software provides, but I just can't seem to tighten it up.
I am using a Les Paul Voodoo, the pick ups in it are fine when played through an amp. So I have kinda ruled out the pick ups being the problem. I bought a new lead, and new string brightened it up a little. But It just seems like whatever I do it sound fuzzy when its played back. This isn't the case with my Basses, and all other software instruments are fine.
I also play a Yamaha APX4 acoustic which can sound fuzzy sometimes, but I can usually tweak the EQ to reduce that.
Anyone else have this problem or does anyone have any tips for getting the best out of guitar through Garageband?
    Cheers,
    Pete

Hi guy's thank's for the response.
1, I don't use an interface but I have been thinking of getting one if it will improve my sound. I don't really know to much about interfaces. I plug direct in to my imac using a jack reducer.
I'm a bass player.... Insert joke here....
If you can possibly advise on an interface that would be cool.
2, I've been using the metal/new metal settings on garageband and tweaking them like crazy maybe over tweaking them.
This is really my first time at recording guitars. In the past I always paid over the top in a studio and I've been with a band. So when guitar recording was going on I was usually down the pub.
So I guess you could say I'm still trying to find my feet.
The line 6 thing, do I need the line 6 hardware, or is it an app for garageband?
All help is very much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Pete
