Help With Repair Permissions!

Hi All,
I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP. I keep getting regular Spinning Beach Balls, Lock Ups, Delays and a whole host of Trackpad Issues much like many people are experiencing with the 1.7 Firmware Update which only is supposed to affect the 13" & 15" UBMP Models. I read on another post that Apple recommended to "Verify & Repair Disk Permissions" which I done. The problems still remain and the report in "Verfiy Permissions" is exactly the same (it seems) as that of the "Repair Permissions" and where it says "Repair Permissions Complete" at the end. The "Repair Permissions" Report still says that "Permissions Differ" on all lines - how can they have been repaired if they still differ? I am a novice and not technically aware about Macs so I hope someone can help me. Here is a copy of the report:

Hi
I think you will find that many people are suffering this very same problem with permissions, it is nothing to be too concerned about and will in all probability disappear after a system update sometime in the future.
There was a similar problem when I had a PowerBook G4 every time you repaired permissions it showed a whole raft of errors which would not go away. Eventually Apple released a system update and they all vanished.
It is not broken and it is not going to impact on the running of the computer in anyway.
I have just got a new MBP and have the same permission problem but my trackpad is functioning perfectly and I don't suffer any spinning beach ball.
I would contact Apple, or go into an Apple Store and seek advice about the trackpad and spinning beach ball as these are probably caused by other problems than permissions being wrong.

  • Help with Repairing Permissions G4 iBook 10.5

    My daughter is visiting and I tried to use the Disk Utility to Repair the
    Permissions on her G4 iBook running OS X 10.5. It cranked and cranked but
    never did repair the permission or really fail either.
    It still works but I would feel better if I could get the permissions repaired.
    Also, the screen really seems dim compared to the new 13-inch MacBook Pro.
    Is there a fix to crank up the brightness on a G4 iBook?

    Ah, yes! The leopard disc utility. What a crock of poop that is. You can let it run overnight and it probably still won't finish. It only takes 90 seconds in Tiger. The best thing to do is to install Onyx and let it take care of the disc maintenance.
    After you install Onyx run 'Automation'. It will repair permissions, clear caches and run the cron scripts in one command. Also, it will only take 15 minutes or so to complete a full string of maintenance tasks. Give up on the disc utility in Leopard.

  • Help re repairing permissions

    Hi all, I hope I'm posting this in the right forum! i like many of us have just upgraded to Leopard with little or no difficulty. However last night before shutting down my MP i decided to repair permissions to ensure everything was still okay as it was a new O/S. On completing "Verify permissions I was given the following information:
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreService/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Has anyone had the same message?
    Does anyone know what it means?
    Do I need to take any action? if so what would you suggest?
    As I said earlier everything seems okay, and Time machine is backing up to my D2 Quadra external HD via Firewire 800 without issue. Your advice and guidance would be very much appreciated re this issue as I'm not sure how to proceed.
    Thanks in anticipation of your valued help,
    Denis

    I found the same thing when when repairing permissions after noticing the slow boot up I have with Leopard and the taskbar taking so long to render. I was a little paranoid at first, but I am more at ease now.
    Thanks for the post

  • Help with Disk Permissions... Doesn't work!

    A few weeks ago, I purchased a 2.26 Nehalem Mac Pro with 14 GB ram. I tried running Disk Utility 3 times since, but it apparently doesn't seem to be working. It says there's an hour a 6 min left, but I've let it go past 5 hours, and nothing occurs.
    Is DU even working on these new Mac's?
    Is there a way to repair permissions without using DU? I tried using Cocktail, but that too isn't doing anything.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Matt and Hatter,
    I ran DU (not from the DVD) 3 times, and keep getting the same Permissions differ on... as seen below.

  • Help with folder permissions issue

    Hello, I'm new to BI and I'm having issues with folder permissions.
    Here is what we are trying to do:
    We have two folders, lets say Folder A and Folder B. We have two application roles, Role1 and Role2.
    Folder A should have full control for Role1, Folder B should not be visible for Role2. Folder B should have full control to Role2, Folder A should not be visible for Role1.
    Under permissions for those two folders we have set it up accordingly. For Folder A, Role 1 has "Full Control", Role 2 has "No Access". Folder B, Role 2 has "Full Control", Role 1 has "No Access".
    Everything works fine if a user has one or the other role.
    But when a user has both the roles, they need to see both the folder but only see 1.
    What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help in advance.

    if it's any consolation, seems to happen in the mac version, too. i use manually get album artwork on some new files imported from a CD - i renamed it exactly the same way it is in the itunes store, which previously always worked without fail. now, nothing. just says the requested resource can't be found. so, likely it's a bug.

  • Help with disk permissions

    After I 'repair disk permissions' a lot of differing permissions come up about java and some other things. I'll clear history, restart the machine and when I've done another 'repair disk permissions' what looks like all the previous repairs repair themselves again. What's going on?

    Those are innocuous and informative messages, not errors. They will recur every time you repair permissions. You can safely ignore them.

  • Help with repair permission!

    After I repair permissions I get the following message:
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    What's the cause of it? How do I fix it?

    Locum elevates Finder's privileges, such as when emptying the trash when there are trash files
    present that the user does not own.
    The SUID (sticky bit) message is a bit misleading. The ISVTX (the sticky bit) has no effect on
    executable files. All optimization on whether text images remain resident in memory is handled
    by the kernel's virtual memory system. So even if the SUID bit was set, it would not matter.
    What the SUID error actually means is this:
    The checksum on record in /var/db/receipts, does not match the actual file checksum. The
    reason is simple:
    The file has been replaced by a newer one, and that is why the old checksum on file is obsolete.
    The receipt file did not get updated during the update installation. Such is not uncommon.

  • Help with which permissions to go into policy file

    I posted this question in Java Web Start & JNLP forum, but realize it may be more appropriate here.
    I am writing my first policy file. I am trying to devise a "system" whereby the users/developers within my organization can use Java Web Start to access each other's applications from our intranet. Previously we were either copying the applications and running them locally or else mapping network drives, but they were running from command line (with no sandbox issues?) either way.
    The application that I am testing Java Web Start with tries to make a database connection. Even with my jarfile signed and my application requesting "all-permissions" and the user granting the permission when prompted, the database connection was always failing. I started looking into the solution of having each user (within my organization) append some "grants" into their user policy file.
    Since these users have already been "trusting" each other's programs enough to run them from the command line, they wouldn't mind an "automatically" having the same level of trust via JWS. But I don't know enough about permissions to know how to specify the correct permissions and know that I am not dangerously widening the permissions.
    How do I write grant clauses into a policy file that say "anything run from our intranet web server can do anything a command-line program could do" ? I tried this:
    grant codeBase "http://our_intranet_webserver/-" {
      permission java.security.AllPermission;
    };...but the database connection still fails. But when I add this:
    grant codeBase "file:/C:/Program Files/Java Web Start/-"{
      permission java.net.SocketPermission "*", "connect";
    (the codebase would refer to the local Java Web Start program itself)...the database connection succeeds. (When I replace SocketPermission with AllPermission, the connection fails. I don't understand that.) BUT if I go granting general permissions to Java Web Start, wouldn't that grant apply to every Java-Web-Start-deployed application on the Web, not just our stuff?
    Thanks for any help or advice on the matter,
    /Mel

    (When I replace SocketPermission with AllPermission, the connection fails. I don't
    understand that.) This problem is solved. It is not true. I currently have a policy file that says:
    grant codeBase "http://our_intranet_webserver/-" {
      permission java.security.AllPermission;
    grant codeBase "file:/C:/Program Files/Java Web Start/-"{
      permission java.security.AllPermission;
    };and the db connection does not fail. If I remove the first grant clause, leaving only AllPermissions to Java Web Start, the db connection does not fail.
    BUT if I go granting general permissions to Java Web Start, wouldn't that grant apply to
    every Java-Web-Start-deployed application on the Web, not just our stuff?This is still my problem. Why should I have to grant Java Web Start permissions (regardless of all or some) when I only want to grant them to a subset of codebases from which Java Web Start can run programs (specifically our intranet webserver)? I think this question has gone back to being more appropriate for the JWS Forum.
    Thank you,
    /Mel

  • I need help with a permissions or authentication problem

    I recently upgraded my Quickbooks application which involved replacing the existing application with a new full version downloaded from Intuit's web site. As soon as I replaced it, it stopped opening. Even reverting to the previous version won't help. It will open if I create a temporary new user and log in as that user. Repairing permission did not help. Something is preventing the application from being authenticated for me (the original user) perhaps? is there perhaps an invisible file that I shoulddelete? Anyone know how I can "reauthenticate" the program? I'm trying to avoid creating a new permanent user and having to move all my files into that. There must be a solution. Needless to say, Intuit was extremely unhelpful. There only sugestion was to log in as a temporary user whenever I need to work in Quickbooks.

    I guess I'm talking to myself. In case anyone will eventually read this, I did just figure out a solution. ApplicationEnhancer (and WindowShade X) was the culprit. After excluding Quickbooks from its list, it starts up fine.

  • Help with repair order

    I sent my nano in for repair a few days ago and I would like to check on the status of the repair. I went to the "check status of repair" section on the website and it prompted me for a case # and some other #. I checked my email and Apple never sent these numbers to me, nor did the service tech give them to me over the phone. All I have is the shipping label from the box Apple sent me. What can I do?
    Thx!

    If you completed an online repair request, then you would have received an email with the information
    also, your repair request should be listed in your online account
    the information should also be on the shipping label for the box you received

  • Help with copying permissions and roles from one user to another. Issue with RoleDefinitions

    I need help please.
    I’m trying to copy a role definition/name in SharePoint 2010 Powershell.
    The below is only a piece of my script, but I have to find '$SearchUser" and wherever it lives (webs, lists, groups), I need to add "$account" and copy permissions
    from '$SearchUser" . We are doing this to limit certain users from access our farm (by adding a new AD domain that does not contain these users, then deleting the old domain).
    Every time I run it, it seems to mess up on this line:
    $role = $web.RoleDefinitions.[$newRoleDef].
     It is acting like the $newRoleDef is null, but it is not.
    When I outputfile the $newRoleDef, it has values, such as Read, Contribute.
    foreach($Web in $Site.AllWebs)
    if($Web.HasUniqueRoleAssignments -eq $True)
    foreach($WebRoleAssignment in $Web.RoleAssignments )
    if($WebRoleAssignment.Member.userlogin)
    if($WebRoleAssignment.Member.LoginName -eq $SearchUser)
    $WebUserPermissions=@()
    foreach ($RoleDefinition in $WebRoleAssignment.RoleDefinitionBindings)
    $newRoleDef = $RoleDefinition.Name
    $assignment = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPRoleAssignment($account)
    $role = $web.RoleDefinitions.[$newRoleDef]
    $assignment.RoleDefinitionBindings.Add($role)
    $_.RoleAssignments.Add($assignment)

    Hi,
    Glad to hear that you solve this issue, thanks for your sharing.
    Thanks,

  • Help With repairing an in warranty x220? Damaged X220

    Today my basically new x220 dropped from maybe 2 feet and the case ( where the heat grill is) broke a bit. The edge of the screen is split and the entire back and hinge where the monitor meets the keyboard is dented ( it looks as if the heat sink may be bent up. what are the steps I need to follow to get this fixed? I have ~270 days of warranty left.  There is a "compucom" service center near me, but what is the quickest way to get this repaired?

    Your standard warranty won't cover the repair on user induced damages.
    You should call Lenovo warranty to find out the best way to get it fixed.
    But i would imagine it won't be cheap.

  • Help with new facebook app idea

    I created a drawing facebook app that allows users to draw on Graffiti Walls. If anyone wants to see the app LIVE right now, it's at, [link removed by moderator]. I made this app using Flash, Actionscript 3 and MySQL for the database. PHP for the serverside stuff.
    Currently each user is allowed his or her own two favorite colors, a message of the day text and also a signature text. I would like to add the ability for a user to store a URL to a mp3 file.(I am not stupid and i'm not allowing users to host mp3 files). Just a link to an mp3 file. Then when you visit that persons wall, the mp3 file loads up.
    I guess what I'm looking for is a good mp3 file host to use? One that offers an upload API would be ideal. Anyone help me with this?

    The storage used in that display is only an estimate. What do you see, when you select your Macintosh HD in the Finder and look at the sizes in the "Finder > File > Get Info" panel for your harddisk? The free storage is shown in the General brick of the Info panel:
    The migration may be needing more free storage, if your iPhoto Library has a corruuption and needs repairing.
    Try the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools before you try to migrate the library again to Photos:
    Make a backup copy on an external drive.
    Then try the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools on your iPhoto Library  to repair the permissions and to repair the database.
    To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto application in the Applications folder  to launch the iPhotos Library First aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
    The select "Repair database".  Repeat with "repair Permissions".
    If it still does not suffice, repeat with "Rebuild Library".
    Then try to migrate the library again to Photos by dragging it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

  • Repairing permissions

    hi i just upgraded to tiger, about a week ago. and i have a little bit of a problem,or i hope its not a problem.
    everything seems fine with repair permissions, but i noticed when i used macaroni the other day that i had the message ./users/shared/sc info does not exist. this message does not appear when i use the repair permissions program in the utiliites folder. i am hoping this is just a glitch and not a major problem, as i am just a novice home user and not really into messing around with things i do not understand. confused sue (does not take much to confuse me)

    hi so it's just a glitch then and nothing wrong with my system. if so then i have nothing to worry about... i am a bit loath to go into programs like terminal as i have no experience with programming etc, and do not want to mess around with things i have no knowledge off.
    thanks for all of your help with this cheers sue

  • Repair Permissions in Single User Mode

    So, I have searched various posts and have yet to find anything that has worked so far. Hopefully, someone can still help. I recently made the mistake of changing my permissions on my hard drive. I clicked "Get Info" for the Boot volume and changed the permissions for "Everyone." I thought I had corrected it, but now when I try to boot, it just sits at the apple grey screen with the spinner and never loads the OS. Judging from other comments, this appears to be a permissions issue and all I need to do is repair the permissions which is why I ran through these commands in Single User mode:
    /sbin/fsck -fy<return> --I did this twice to fix the drive
    /sbin/fsck -fy<return>
    /sbin/mount -uw<return>
    /sbin/autodiskmount -va <return>
    /usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /<return>
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
    I am having to run through the Single User mode because I do not have the SL install disk. However, I have Windows installed on a Boot Camp partition and I can access files on the mac side but everything is read only.
    I am a novice at the command line so any guidance on what commands might help to repair permissions would be great.

    Found this for Leopard. Will probably work in 10.6
    Run these commands and hit enter after each. Be careful with the spaces; keep exactly as written. There are various suggestions in this thread, which you might first want to check out, but this seems to be the most promising.
    http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/370223/changed-hd-permissions-mac-wont-get/
    mount -uw /
    chmod 775 /
    chmod 1775 /
    Then restart
    BTW, not recommended to repair Permissions from the install disk, since if you've updated since installing, those will be out of date and incorrect. Permissions Repair should be done from the normal boot volume.
