Help with setting up wireless network with ibook

Okay, I just purchased a cheap little belkin f5d7050 USB adapter to connect my G3 iBook to my wireless network, I do a few things on this computer, and would like to use it not hardwired to my router, since there isn't much room where I have the router...And the reason I purchased this card is because I saw there are drivers on the Belkin website for this little guy. Purchased it, and found out it is version 3xxx, and on the website the only drivers they have for Mac OS X is for version 2xxx. The guy(in very broken English) told me that ralink.com(found out it is ralinktech.com or something like that) has drivers for version 3xxx. I downloaded what I could find at that website, and installed, which went fine, seemed to of installed the same thing the driver did that I got from Belkin, and I install it and restart, and then I go into Applications to start it up, and I open it up, and then it says no device is connected, so I connect the adapter, and the little light doesn't light up on the USB adapter, not sure if it is broken, or that is because there are some steps I am missing.
Anyone have any ideas? Gone through the same thing?
I just don't want to dish out for an airport card, since I rarely use this thing for that kind of money. I got this one for like 14 bucks, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Right before I installed it, it told me after install and restart I have to configure this interface in Network Pane of System Preferences before I can use the Wireless USB adapter. How do I go about doing this? This might be my problem.
So any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Jordan

USB wireless devices have always been a problem it seems.
Maybe this post can offer some answers...

  • Trying to set up wireless network on PC with Airport Express

I'm helping a friend set up his network with AirPort Express. He's got a modem attached to his PC, and currently has a router that sends a wireless signal to a receiver on the PC in the other room. Now he's added a Mac, and the old router/receiver doesn't work with Mac. So he bought an Airport Express.
I've turned on the Airport, and first I connected the ethernet cable from the modem to the AirPort. Per the AirPort utility I put on the PC, it couldn't find it (got the flashing amber light). So then I took out that ethernet, and I hooked up the ethernet directly from the CPU to the AirPort. Suddenly, it was found, and it took me step by step through the set up. It asked for password info from our internet provider (??why would I have that info??), so we just hit "enter". Then it couldn't set up the network, and said to check the "manage network settings". I've tried everything. Not only can I NOT manage to create a network, but now NEITHER ethernet cable will cause any recognition in the AirPort. All I get is the blinking amber light. I'm about to throw all the computers out the window...it really should not be this difficult. I've set up networks in my own home, before, with both PC and Mac, and never had these problems. So, now, I've had to relink up the old router/receiver in order to send out this call for help. Can anyone suggest anything else to try before I use these computers for target practice?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jennifer
P.S. The main PC w/modem is on Vista with service pack 2.0...since I can't even get that one working with AirPort, I hardly think it matters what the other computers are...

I had some initial problems too. Make sure that you have the latest Airport Utility in the utilities folder. I used that to correct the problems I had when I first got Time Machine. I recommend resetting everything through there to get it working right.
Mine is not set up to run an n network because my macs are all g and b compatible. Does the airport utility see the time machine? And if so, does it have a green light in the utility?

  • Help with iBook and iCloud

    Hi!
I saved a PDF file to iCloud. Can I read this file in iBooks on my iPhone? I can't see it.
Or I have to use iTunes to move my PDF to iBooks only?

I don't think so. I was in error when i said " use iCloud to sync it to your iphone or ipad". I checked my PDF files on my iPad vs iPhone and even though I have the settings for iBook to sync collections, I found the books sync but not the PDF files. To test it I made a quick PDF file from a Pages document on my iPad and emailed it to myself. I opened the attachement on my iPad to iBooks PDF. Then I waited a few minutes and checked my PDF files on my iPhone. The newly created PDF was not there. I would have believed all files associated with iBooks would be synced since when I look at the categories of the syncing under the Settings app for iBooks it says "Sync Bookmarks, Sync Collections, Show All Purchases".
Then I made a Collection and added PDF files to it. This again was done on my iPad. I then checked my iPhone and the Collection file name I had created was there but no files were showing. So then I added a book to the same collection on my iPhone and checked that same collection on my iPad. Same result. Title of the collection shows but no book shows.
I don't have any problems of book purchase syncing to my iPad or iPhone but the Collection function does not cross devices. While this is somewhat frustrating it doesn't stop you from manually adding PDF files to your devices and reading them when you choose.

  • Need HELP! connecting to wireless network; IP Address problems!

I am trying to connect to wireless networks using the AirPort built into my MacBook Pro. There are two specific networks I am trying to connect to, both are WEP protected. I know the passwords and can get into each of them but I cannot connect to the internet, which is the main reason for connecting to them in the first place! When I go into System Preferences and click on Network, I see that next to AirPort it says I am connected to the network but may not be able to connect to the internet because my computer has a Self Assigned IP address. I assume this means my computer is not receiving an IP address from the network. I am set on full auto with DHCP. So what's wrong? Please Help!!!

That indicates that the MacBook Pro did not successfully communicate with the DHCP server on the network. Do those networks have access control (MAC address filtering) enabled? If so, the best solution is to reconfigure the base station so that this feature is disabled. This adds no real security since MAC addresses are easily discovered and cloned.
If you can't disable access control, you will need to add the MAC address of the wireless interface of your MacBook Pro to the list of allowed clients.

  • Need help connecting to BEFW11S4 wireless network

A friend I visit often has a BEFW11S4 router. Other friends who visit connect immediately to the unsecured wireless network. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons I'm unable to connect with either of my laptops, so have to plug in the LAN. This is the only place I've ever had a problem connecting to a wireless network.
My laptops are Toshiba Satellites, running Windows XP Home & Office, respectively. Sometimes they won't even recognize the network, or when they do, just won't connect. I've gone through the tutorial and all settings numerous times, turned off the firewall, turned off Norton and still no luck. Any help getting me connected is appreciated. Thanks.

In your computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete any existing entry for your friend's network.   Reboot your computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and add your friends SSID.  Then select this SSID and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  You should login automatically when computer boots up.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trouble setting up wireless network on PC

I'm trying to set up PC as hub of new network at home with iBook G4 as only other computer.
Using Airport Express assistant I get the following error message: " The Airport Express Assistant found that Windows is not allowed to manage wireless networks on this computer. This can be as a result of haveing a third party utility that manages wireless networks.
For best results please allow Windows to manage wireless networks."
I'm not sure what third party utility it is referring to - any suggestions?

Use the Airport Admin Utility to configure your Airport Express rather than use the Assistant.

  • Setting up Wireless Network over Electrical System (powerline)

Hi, thanks for any help in advance.  I have an older house that is not conducive to using the airport express units to extend the wireless network from my time capsule, which acts as my primary router.  So I purchased a powerline bidge and extender that allows me to use the electrical system in my house as an ethernet bridge.  This has worked marvelously, and I now attach a fj45 cable from the powerline product directly to a remote computer.
But the question I have is how do I extend the wireless network. This same powerline extender has multiple ethernet outputs, and I connected one of these to an airport express. I then set the airport express as another network, and gave it another name, and this works fine.  The signal is much stronger versus just using the "extend my network" setup option, which I assume uses wifi to connect to the express.  But now I have 2 wifi networks in the house, and want to add a few more extenders, and do not really want 4 different networks in the house.  With an RJ45 cable attached, can I pick "extend my existing network" and have it not attach to this express wirelessly, and instead extend via the powerline product, which will be talking to the express via the electrical system and rj45?
    Thanks again.

The signal is much stronger versus just using the "extend my network" setup option, which I assume uses wifi to connect to the express.
    That is correct.
But now I have 2 wifi networks in the house, and want to add a few more extenders,...
On the AirPort Express that you have set up now with a different wireless network....make the following changes:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons and adjust your settings to look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your "main" wireless network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Radio Mode = No change needed
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same security setting as your "main" router
Wireless Password = Exact same password as the "main" wireless network
    Confirm Password
Click Update to save settings and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Very important....power cycle the entire network by powering everything off, order is not important. Start the modem first and let it run a minute or two by itself. Start the main router next the same way. Continue starting devices one at time the same way until everything is powered back up.
You now have a "roaming" network. You can "walk" your laptop from the area near the main router to the area near the Express and stay on the same network. Your laptop will automatically switch to the wireless access point with the stronger signal.
Configure other AirPort Express devices that you add exactly the same way....except that you would want to assign different Base Station device names to each Express to keep things straight.

  • New router crashes before setting a wireless network

    Hi,
I have just bought a mini router and it crashes before setting up a wireless network. When I start the intallation the software is asking me to connect the USB to the PC; once it detects it it crashes, than nothing happens anymore.
    1. step 1
    1. step 2
    I am using windows 7,

What the model # of this mini router?
    What FW is currently loaded?
    What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
    Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
    Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
    Enable phishing and malware protection

  • Set up wireless network on EA60-155

    I have A60 EA60-155 Laptop.
I am having trouble setting up a wireless network between my desktop and my laptop.
My desktop is running fine online via a Thompson 576 Network Router. I am using a BT Voyager 1060 Laptop card in my laptop, but the two will not connect. Can anyone help?

    Hi,
at first you have to set up a connection from the laptop to the router. Now the two computers are in the same network. They can see each other in the explorer if they are in the same workgroup. You can change the workgroup in control panel, system.

  • Trouble setting up wireless network

    Equipment using:
Linksys Wirleess G Router (WRT54GS) w/ Super Cantenna attached.
Linksys Wireless G Range Expander (WRE54G)
    Scenario:
Trying to expand my wireless network to reach house 3 doors down; approx 150 ft. (House C)
    I own house A, B, C (x are other houses)
    B x x x x
    - Street -
    A x x C x
At house C, the signal I pickup with my laptop with built-in wireless NIC is 1.0 Mb/s (very weak)
I tried configuring the Linksys Wireless G extender and it doesnt pick up any signal when placed in house C.  For house A and B it works fine.
I'm going to try tweaking everything some more tonight (adjusting Cantenna, try an external wireless NIC instead of built-in NIC on laptop, etc.) but any other thoughts/suggestions/solutions would be greatly appreciated.  Trying to solve this problem and not spend $$ out the wazoo.
    Thanks in advance
    Eddie

i don't think Range Expander will work with the router from 150 ft. of distance...it is too far...however you may try tweaking up wireless settings on the router and as well on the expander for e.g. logon to router's setup page and try changing advanced wireless settings, try reducing beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS threshold to 2304...make sure that you have latest firmware installed on router and expander...

  • HELP!!!  WIRELESS NETWORK NAME CHANGE

Does anyone know how to change the wireless network name on a linksys wireless-G router? I can find any software ANYWHERE that will work on a mac. is there any mac drivers or anything out there for this product?

You need to use your web browser to acces the router. Does your documentation give you an IP address for the router or perhaps a web url? If so type that into your browser and the setting should become available. You will need a user name and password to reach the settings. This may be printed on the bottom of the router. Or try admin for the users name and password for the password.

  • Problem setting up wireless networking

I have an imac and a macbook and have just purchased a Netgear wireless router WGR614.
It was easy to get both machines connected to the internet. However, I would like two-way filesharing and am having more of a problem. I created a computer-to computer network and the macbook shows up fine in the imac's network window, and I can mount it on the desktop. But it won't work the other way: I can't mount the imac on the macbook's desktop, it just doesn't show up in the macbook's network window, nothing appears in that window. Entering the imac's IP address manually in the connect-to-server box on the macbook doesn't work either.
I'd also like to print from the macbook to the printer attached to the imac, but the lack of connection in that direction prevents this.
I have tried creating a computer-to computer network on the macbook, and trying things form that way round, but the result is the same. I have ticked all the right boxes in the sharing panel, of course.
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Please elaborate on "computer-to-computer" network. A computer-to-computer network in wireless lingo means you created a secondary wireless network that is being broadcast from the computer it is created on. It's done by going under the AirPort menu and selecting "create network." If this is what you've done, it would explain the problem you are having. This network is independent from the one you have setup on the Netgear device and is not what you want. Make sure both computers you want to share files/printers between are on the Netgear wireless network and then go to the "Sharing" system preference and enable "Personal File Sharing" and "Printer Sharing." That should pretty much do it. Hope this helps.

  • WRT54G router set up, Wireless network found, but cant connect.

I've had this router working for over a year but for whatever reason, it stopped working about a week ago. Powering off the router and cable modem usually works but not this time, so I attached a cable from a laptop to the router and tried to run the setupWRT54G setup CD. After step 7, it kept repeating itself in a loop... trying to reconfigure the router and asking for the password. Finally, I exited and the window message box said "Setup is not complete, continue exiting?"  So I accessed the router setup thru IE via the cable:  Http:\\192.168.1.1 and set up the network and gave it a new name, channel 7, etc. My wife can access the network from her work laptop via wireless, so its working for her. As for the other laptop and other desktop in our home, when we search for available networks, we can see out network and click "Connect", ... supply the router password that I issued in the router setup, but it says that it cant connect after a minute of trying. What have I done wrong? One laptop can access the network and two cant. Before last week, all 3 could access the wireless network. FYI - I downloaded and installed ther latest fimware from the LINKSYS website (V8.XX), but no difference. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

    Maccer wrote:

Keep in mind that the router setup password is not the same thing as the encryption key that you use to connect wirelessly to the router.
If it works normally from your wife's computer, I'd be looking at the settings on your computer first, rather than the router's.
In network -> TCP/IP -> properties is it set to get an IP address automaticaly?
If the above aren't the issue, I would do a hardware reset of the router back to factory defaults and enter your settings again from scratch. That's a recommended step after upgrading or reloading the firmware anyway, even if you weren't having this trouble

  • Help setting up wireless network with Verizon DSL

I bought a MacBook Pro and an Air Port Extreme yesterday. I have an iMAC G5 from October 2004. I have Verizon DSL service and a Westell Series 6100 modem.
Bottom line --> I can't get the wireless connection to work.
I have successfully used a wired dsl connection with my iMAC G5. But, I tried to just disconnect the ethernet cable from my computer and put it into the Airport Extreme and that didn't work. I used the utility to set up the base station and the network, but I'm not sure if I did it properly.
I know a PPPoE is involved but I'm not sure of how to configure the system properly. I'm also not sure if the problem is with the configuration of the AirPort extreme or with my Verizon modem.
All I know is that I want to see a green light on that thing and not a flashing orange one.
Does any one have some instructions for setting up your AirPort Extreme using Verizon DSL? Has anyone else had similar problems? Thanks in advance!
    MacBook Pro & iMAC G%   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Just finished solving this problem. I am not a strong tech guy, but I know that since it works for others it is just a question of poking and pushing. Anyway it was nine hours in the making...
My snow airport working with an airport express had been bullet proof with verizon dsl for a couple of years. I wanted to upgrade since I am now Intel mac and hit the blinking amber light.
I am only going to be able to give the big picture... The AEBS found and worked with all my computers from the beginning, so the problem became that the default IP Address and Subnet Mask were wrong and never automatically adjusted by the assistants.
Take your working plug-in ethernet connections or the working snow connections from the Airport Utility Internet Connect page. I used the manual configure process to access the info screens.
I copied all the numbers down, but I believe you only have to insert the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router Address and DNS servers. I put "dsl.verizon.net" in the domain search box.
Go up to the IPv4 pull down menu and select manual and put in the numbers you copied. Then click Update. When the software returns control, the AEBS will still be orange.
Toggle the IPv4 to "using DHCP" Click Update.
This should bring the green light.
I think I then updated the Network Preference Pane, probably had to manually put in my wireless password again. Browser and mail program worked.
I think that was all. I may have had to repeat the toggle to make it stick, but I am operational for the last several hours, including the airport express, a G4 laptop and a Sony PC.
    Hope this helps.
