Help with solaris 10 instalation

Hi,
after installing solaris 10, its asking me for login name & password? what should I do?

Hi
During the installation, you were asked for the root password. So you need to login as user 'root' using this password.
The next thing that you should do is to create an ordinary user account for yourself. There's more than one way to do this, but an easy one is to launch /usr/sbin/smc (Solaris Management Console), select 'This Computer' in the Toolboxes list, then System Configuration (left panel) -> Users. After that it's something like Action->Add User (I don't have the necessary priveleges on the machine that I'm using). Then you can logout as root and log back in as the user that you created.

  • Help with Solaris 10

    Hello,
I just got ahold of a SunBlade 100 system (that's having video problems, I already posted what the problem is in the Hardware section) and I would like some help with Solaris 10. I have never used Sun before, and I figured why not get a machine and start learning. =)
Anyways, I do alot of web design and networking...on Mac's though.
I'm setting this system up on a Rack along with a Win Xp box, a Mac G4, and a Linux Mint machine.
I also have two of these Scsi towers that came with the Sun System. They can each hold I believe 8-10 Drives each? Not sure..that i want to setup at a later time.
My questin is this. I'd like to run websites off my Sun system. But i'm not sure how to transfer my files from iWeb to the Sun, and how to control the sites on the system, as well as turning the site on, off, etc.
I'd also like to store music on it as well. Because I can have alot of Scsi drives, i figured I can get quite large amount of storage for songs. I'd like to set it up to where I can give someone a login information and a website (ex. myuploadsite.net) and they can go in, and upload there music. But, I'd like to make it to where I can make the website in iWeb, and run it off the Sun system, and store all the files on the Sun as well.
And my last question is this. How do I remote desktop to a Sun System from a Mac. I'm using Apple Remote Desktop, and the way the rack is setup, is that I remote connect to the Xp, linux, and Mac box's (saves monitors, and space. =), and also because I'm usually never home...
Thanks in advance for the help!
Oh, and if anyone has a Instant Messanger and wouldn't mind having a chat with me, that would be great.

  • Help with Solaris.....any help would be nice

I have to write a paper comparing and contrasting Solaris with DOS/MSDOS.....you wouldnt think this would be hard but it is......is ththere a place where I can find a head to head comparsion? If not perhaps some of you familiar with Solaris could give me some points to start with......I should point out I have never used or seen Solaris I am completely new to this area and it may seem simple but the truth is Im a little overwhelmed by all the information....cant see the forrest for the trees...........so any help would be nice ....thanks in advance

    Hi,
Solaris is so much more advanced an OS than DOS that a comparison is not straightforward, but here are some less than exhaustive suggestions. Please bear in mind I m not a DOS person, and these are just my personal thoughts on the subject; apologies to Microsoft afficionados for any mistakes.
    Similarities:
Both DOS and Solaris are Operating Systems. They provide access to machine resources, like a printer port, or a disk ( through the filesystem), by providing an Application Programming Interface, thus saving programmers from learning the underlying details and machine language of each machine they use. So for example in DOS compiler routines make use of INT 21h to access system services. In solaris we use the system call interface (which does a similar thing underneath).
They also both provide a command shell for ordinary users. In DOS we have command.com, in Solaris you may use Korn shells for example.
    Differences
DOS is a single user operating system. Solaris is multiuser, multitasking and multiprocessing.
That is to say Solaris supports multiple programs running on the system at the same time. It will context switch between them to give the illusion of concurrency on a uniprocessor system (time-slicing). On a multiprocessor some tasks will run concurrently.
Many users can log on to a Solaris system (via a serial terminals, or a network connection (telnet or X windows)) and run programs at the same time. Full networking facilities are built in.
Dos only provides the ability to fileshare across the network, using the add on Lan Manager.
Because multiple users run processes (threads/tasks ...) concurrently, Solaris provides extensive security, which DOS doesnt. Each process is owned by a user and runs in its own virtual memory space and is prevented from interfering with any other process memory or other users processes. The operating system and its data is held in protected kernel memory and not directly accessible to processes, so malfunctioning user program cant crash the system accidentally or maliciously.
Devices and files are protected through filesystem permissions, so a device or file has an owner, a group owner and various permissions attributes such as read/write/execute.
Solaris also implements filesystem Access Control Lists (ACLs).
Solaris runs in 32bit protected mode on x86 processors, giving it access to the full address range of the processor (4GB using 4k pages). DOS uses the 16bit segmented memory model.
On ultrasparc systems or the forthcoming Intel Itanium systems, Solaris runs in 64bit mode, giving it access to vastly more memory and
faster computation. (note also DOS only runs on x86 processors).
Who are you writing the paper for? It would probably help some of the readers here with posting suggestions. Some specific questions would be good too.
However, you should try to get access to a solaris system on a network and maybe have a friendly sysadmin show you around a bit.
Do you know anyone with a LINUX system? Solaris and LINUX are variants of the UNIX OS and for your purposes a comparison of LINUX and DOS may suffice.
    Hope that is some help.

  • Some help with the 10g install, please.

    Hi,
We want to install 10g, we are currently running 9i. We want to do this in silent mode since we have so many databases to move to 10g. We've got a few questions & concerns about the procedures that are supposed to be done.
If someone could kindly read over some of our concerns, we'd appreciate it.
First, we used the -record method to create a response file. How much do we have to manually edit that file once Oracle creates it for us? Or is it ready to go after we exit the OUI.
When we tried to do the install, it said it successfully installed 10g, but it failed on some of the configuration assistants. Do we need to run all of the configuration assistants? I mean, TNS is already configured. Does it change for the 10g install?
Additionally, once the 10g software is complete, the environment is still set to 9i. How does that get changed for the silent install to continue with the DBUA? I mean, we do have databases that need upgrading.
Any help with steps would be very helpful to us. We're getting error messages like this:
The installation of Oracle Database 10g was successful, but some
optional configuration assistants failed, were cancelled or skipped.
    Please check
    '/ora2/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/silentInstall2006-10-26_01-26-39PM.log'
    for more details.

  • Help with Video Card Install on Solaris 8

I have a video card with nvidia4 chipset. After installing solaris 8 on my system I get a screen that is too big to fit on the monitor, so I have to scroll down to see everything. Plus it displays 16 colors. I tried to install the FreeBSD drivers that are availble on the nvidia site but could not run "make" command. Anyone know how to solve this?

    There are two options:
    1. Install the latest Solaris 8 x86 video driver patch109401-14
    available at:
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/xprod-Solaris_x86IntelDrivers&nav=pub-patches
This may add native support for your nvidia chipset. If it doesn't,
then you have the option to try the new VESA driver which is
included with this patch as well - the VESA driver is supposed to work
on all cards that have the necessary VESA support bios routines.
    2. Install the "Solaris XFree86 Video Drivers and Porting Kit"
    http://soldc.sun.com/developer/support/driver/tools/video/video-index.html
It adds support for many video cards by using XFree 4.2.0 video
driver modules. It also includes another variant of the VESA driver.

  • Help with oracle 10g install on solaris x86

hi, i downloaded solaris 10 from oracle site (sol-10-u8-ga-x86-dvd.iso) and i have installed it on vmware. i was going through the installation guide for oracle 10 for solaris x86 and while on the pre-installation steps, i issued this command
    # /bin/isainfo -kv
    and it gave me
    # 64-bit amd64 kernel modules
    instead of
    # 32-bit i386 kernel modules
    as the guide expected.
please what can i do, cos the guide says if i dont see the later, the installation cannot complete.
    thnx

First check you Operating System Bit information whether it is 64 or 32 bit , for this first check any of the command path
    Example ls command
    $ which ls
    /usr/sbin/ls
    $ file /usr/sbin/ls
It will show you whether your OS is 64 bit or 32 bit and accordingly download the software from below link ,if it is showing 64 bit os then you have to download 64 bit database software .

  • Help with Solaris 10 and 3COM 3C556 Builtin MiniPCI

    Hello All,
I have just installed S10. But my 3COM 3C556 Mini PCI NIC, is not
working with it. I don't understand why the elxl driver is not
working with since it is suppose to be compatible with the 3C9xx...
Any one had the same issue?
Here is what I have done so far.
I have included in the /etc/driver_aliases a line with
    elxl "pci10b7,6055"
Also added in /boot/solaris/devicedb/master a line with
    pci10b7,6055 pci10b7,6055 net pci elxl.bef "3COM 3C556 MiniPCI"
then I config the network wih hostname.elxl
    netmask, defauftroute, resolv.conf etc...
    I do a devfsadm -i elxl
    touch /reconfigure
    I reboot.
Whe I do an ifconfig -a I can then see the card up with the corect
IP, but it has a MAC address that is ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff, I can not
ping outside, and the led of the NIC card does not come up. It looks
like it's not even up.... But I know its works okay since I used to
    have debian on the machine...
    Thanks for your help
    Cheers,
    HK

    Brilliant workaround.
most of these posts are before Sol 10 was officially launched, but I just wanted to give some feedback to date.
I'm trying to get solaris 10 working on a Dell Latitude C810. (where I work our notebooks are faster then our desktops/servers!)
Anyhow found similar problem where no NIC was found.
Using the manual steps below, and by changing the bios to boot the NIC first, I was able to 'fake' solaris into at least getting it to a state where i could "massage" it
bootup it still doesn't like things, due to being unable to configure the ipv4 device elxl0 but, i just made a little script file to change it to what it should be..
    ifconfig elxl0 down
    ifconfig elxl0 <ip address you want>
    ifconfig elxl0 netmask <netmask>
    ifconfig elxl0 broadcast <bcast addy>
    ifconfig ether <mac-addy>
    ifconfig elxl0 up
    ifconfig -a
this get's the device as close to workable state.
Just a further note, I tried installing this on a couple "express builds" 07/05 and 08/05, both, upon a fresh install, just after grub loads, it immediately core-dumps and reboots the machine.
Once i reverted back to the 'official' 03/05 release version, it installed fine, I really would prefer to experiment with grub, and to take advantage of the newest bug-fixed express builds, but, c'est la vie...
Thanks again for posting this workaround!

  • SCCM Driver Injection : What am I missing? Need help with getting drivers installing correctly in my environment.

    Everyone,
I'm not new to using SCCM, but i'm VERY new to setting up and managing it.  I have just laid it down for the school district that I manage, and i'm loving it.  Imaging is going great, all but one thing now...drivers installing.
Let me tell you what I've been doing, so hopefully a kind soul out there can tell me where my logic of the driver "injection" process is lacking and might can fill in some gaps.
I downloaded all drivers pertaining to the 7-8 series of computers we have in our environment currently, and imported them based on a criteria such as this:
    x86.LenovoEdge71.Desktop
    x86.DellOpti755.Desktop
    so forth and so on
I created packages based on the same exact naming scheme.  I update my distribution point at the end of the import, and all the drivers/packages/categories are in place.  When I go to Monitoring/Distribution Status/Content Status, all of my packages
show up , but under targeted it says 0.
My thoughts from reading online, is I upload all these drivers and during my task sequence where it says it's "applying device drivers" it's set to "install only the best matched compatible drivers" and "consider drivers from all
categories".  I also checked "do unattended installation of unsigned drivers no versions of Windows where this is allowed".
so correct me if my thinking is incorrect, it should search through all series of the computers we have in our environment and grab the best drivers from the overall database.  Is this not right?
The reason I ask this, is we have a few hundred HP 6000 Pro desktops.  WHen I image them, it comes up with 2 unknown devices.  OF these, I can manually point them at the folder from which I uploaded the drivers for this series/category and it installs
    100% successfully...MANUALLY.  What's the reasoning behind this?
I can't help but think there's something missing in my process / logic and I need to be set straight.
Can someone out there tell me what i'm doing wrong?  We're planning a district-wide re-imaging before summer's over, and the clock's ticking...but the drivers being installed are all that's keeping us from starting our migrations.
Any help on this is GREATLY appreciated, thank you very much!

You have setup everything correct, but for your desired result you need to use "Apply Driver Package" Task rather than "Auto Apply Drivers".
Auto Apply drivers will install the best matched/compatible drivers for only the PNP devices. For more info on this:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680990.aspx
Whereas "Apply Driver Package" would install all drivers you have in the package and hence you don't see the unknown drivers in device manager. For more info on this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680403.aspx
If you have multiple models, create this task for each model individually and then associate with a WMI query condition under Options tab to check the manufacturer/model
Example: Select * from Win32_ComputerSystem where Manufacturer = "HP" and Model Like "6000%"

  • Trouble with Solaris 10 install on SunBlade 100 using Media CDs from Sun

    Hello World,
My SunBlade 100 was not reading various burned Solaris 10 media, so I purchased the media kit from Sun. The installation is successful up until the point where it asks for CD2. I didn't even hear the drive spin when I clicked "Next" after inserting CD2.
I know it is not the CD drive since it obviously works for CD1. It is also not an intermittent problem with the CD drive because CD1 works each time I run the install. I also don't think it is the media since CD2 went right from the factory envelope to my CD drive.
    So:
    1. Has anyone encountered something like this?
    2. Can I resume the installation from the command line?
    Many Thanks,
    Greg

    Actually ...
Yes, it can be the optical drive.
Those factory shipped drives in the SB100's were prone to spontaneously failing, one minute to the next.
Additionally the CD's are actually written differently, whether they are the bootable ones in the set versus the non-bootable CDs in the set.
    Data track layouts are different.
The optical drive could commonly have difficulty reading every disk you ever insert into it.
Borrow a replacement drive from a PeeCee.
Jumper it the same as the current drive and just use it.
If that works, then go buy a replacement.
Optical read-only drives are laughably cheap.
Optical read/write DVD drives are inexpensive, as well.

I've installed the Solaris 10 in core mode. The problem is that I need to use the Xmanager software but i don't know which packages must be installed to run the Xmanager . Could someone help me. Thank you in advance

What account are logged as? You can type "who" command without the quotation. You should be logged in a root. Root has total control of the system. If you want to go to the root account type "su" command.

  • Help with Solaris 2.5.1

    Hello all,
I'm new to the Solaris administration and must install Solaris 2.5.1 on a 36G harddrive running on an Ultra 80 Workstation (configured as a server to sunray 100s). I have installed Solaris 8 on a second harddrive inthe same maching but can't seem to get 2.5.1 to even start installing. Yes I have the installation manual for what it's worth but every time I boot off of the CD I get a prompt to enter a kernal id. What do I do????
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
The NI-488.2 for Solaris, v2.2 requires Solaris 2.5.1 or above, and the NI-488.2 for Solaris, v2.3 requires Solaris 2.6 and above. You will see these messages when you start up the installers. You are right that this information should be more clearly available at the website, at the download pages and perhaps in KnowledgeBase, too.

  • Help with Solaris on NT 4.0 box.

I have an NT 4.0 system that I cant disable at this time. I also want to run Solaris 8 on that same box. How can I accomplish this? Can I run Solaris 8 and NT on the same drive? Can they be run from to different partitions on the same drive? Or can they be run from two different drives in the same box? If an option is workable how do you select what OS to use when you boot the system? Thank for all help in advance.
    Mark

Yes, you can run Solaris 8 Intel edition on an existing machine that has NT 4.0 installed onto the same drive. Also, Solaris will have be installed onto a separate partition on the drive since it uses a different file system from the Win32 platforms. Finally, you can also run Solaris on a different drive on the same box.
The prerequisite is to have Windows NT 4.0 installed first before Solaris 8. The installation is straightforward - just need to pop the Device Configuration Assistant into the floppy drive and the Solaris 8 Installation into the CD-ROM drive and the installation menu will guide you through.
The only caution I can give you is that at some point of the installation process, you will be asked to select the harddisk space for the Solaris OS, ensure that you select the remaining harddisk AND NOT the entire harddisk, if you select the entire harddisk, your Windows NT 4.0 OS will be erased.

  • Help with CF9 Standard Install and Mac OS Server (Snow Leopard Server)

    Hello,
I recently purchased a mac mini server (with snow leopard server) and will be using it to host my CF9 applications.  This install is WAY different than the install needed on a windows machine.  I tried to install it once and somehow hosed up Apache and now I can't even get it to start up (apache).  So I am having the colo company to do a full restore of the server and I took notes on the Mac Server install and below is the questions I have.
1.) Since Snow Leopard Server comes with Apache webserver, it is what CF wants to use.  This is fine, I just need to know where these things are...
It is asking for the Configuration Directory:  I'm guessing it is /private/etc/apache2 ? Right or Wrong???
2.) It is asking for Directory and file name of server binary:  It currently defaults to /usr/sbin/httpd  is this right or should I point it to another directory?
3.) It is asking for Directory and file name of server script: It currently defaults to /usr/sbin/apachectl  is this right or should I point it to another directory?
It also wants the location where I can place the CFIDE.  Can I place this anywhere I wish or is there a preferred location to point this to?
and finally, I have CF9 Standard, so on the mac server should I install it as a server configuration (self contained instance) or Enterprise Multiserver config.  I was reading online that its better to install as an Enterprise Multiserver setup, but I don't know if this will work for me since I'm useing the standard edition.
Please Help ANYONE, if you have mac os experience and installing CF9 onto a mac server
    Thanks

I have been getting this exact same problem.  CF installer is somehow writing some invalid information into the httpd.conf file.  I was able to replace the httpd.conf file with the default one, and was able to go through the webconnector process again and (sometimes randomly) it works.  I also spent about 4 hours on the line with adobe CF support and made no progress beyond what I'll post here .
To answer your questions about file locations:
    /private/etc/apache2/ for the httpd.conf files
/usr/sbin/ for both the apachectl and the httpd binaries
Although I'm able to get past where you are, and it seems to work correctly, Immediately upon adding a new site via server admin it all breaks.  Coldfusion then will only work if I manually go to a cfm document.  For example:  http://example.com/ will give me the raw text from the (default index) index.cfm file.  But typing http://example.com/index.cfm works.
I am lost here as well.  After 4 hours on the phone with adobe support I would have hoped it would be an easy fix.  I've completely nuked and reinstalled the server from scratch with the exact same results both times.
Does anyone have the slightest clue about what may be going on here?
