HELP with sRGB in Photoshop Color Management Winows Vista

Greetings beautiful Windows people!
I am stumped with a Windows Vista problem — it is not displaying sRGB properly.
I posted bigger files here if this is easier to follow
http://www.gballard.net/windows_srgb/
But here goes:
First, my main question is HOW Windows Vista deals with sRGB because I am seeing inconsistant sRGB color on a client's workflow.
The first clue is:
How Photoshop is displaying Tagged sRGB on the two machines:
The original sRGB tagged file opens as above on my Mac.
Note: In the lower screen shots, Firefox has color-management enabled — and Photoshop's Working RGB is set to sRGB (it is using the sRGB embedded profile).
In the above Windows screenshot — Photoshop and Firefox look yellow — Explorer displays TAGGED sRGB correct — FireFox incorrectly matches Photoshop.
In the above Windows screenshot — Photoshop looks yellow — Explorer 8 and Firefox display UNTAGGED sRGB correct.
BECAUSE THIS IS CONTRARY TO THE THEORY, I suspected a bad profile so we loaded sRGB as the Monitor profile in the Windows Color Management setting.
Setting Windows Vista> Control Panel> Color Management: to sRGB fixed the problem (above, Photoshop is displaying the file correctly now, and sRGB is behaving as expected in both managed and unmanaged Web browsers).
However, I am clueless about two things:
Is Vista's "Color Management" Control Panel setting its Monitor RGB, or
Is Vista's "Color Management" Control Panel setting a DEFAULT RGB for the system?
I suspect the client has a bad hardware puck and/or buggy profiling package that needs an update because it appears to be even causing Photoshop to display sRGB improperly using the custom profile (and this is happening on eight of the client's Windows boxes).
He is using a glossy screen on the laptop I saw if his package can't handle it).
Can someone please clue me here as to what's going on (and how Vista should be set up to display sRGB consistantly in Photoshop and WEB BROWSERS)?

Thank you Chris,
When I did windows update I must have checked to download new display drivers I'm using (Dell with Dell Screens).  It was loaded into the color settings as a profile, I hit delete and now all is well.

  • SRGB vs no Color Management question

I have two workflows for Photoshop that produce the exact same results and I want to know which one to use, but most importantly why?
    WORKFLOW 1: NO COLOR MANAGEMENT
    1. Photoshop Color Settings is set to "Monitor Color" which tells the PSD to not use color management.
    2. I check with Proof Colors (View > Proof Colors), having Monitor RGB selected (View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB), and of course nothing changes.
    3. I Save for Web and nothing changes (If I select "convert to sRGB" in the Save for Web dialog the colors wash out so I NEVER check this).
    4. Export the image.
    WORKFLOW 2: sRGB
    1. Photoshop Color Settings is set to "North America General Purpose 2" which tells the PSD to use sRGB.
    2. I check with Proof Colors (View > Proof Colors), having Monitor RGB selected (View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB), and the colors change a good bit.
    3. I Save for Web and it matches what Proof Colors shows me (If I select "convert to sRGB" in the Save for Web dialog nothing changes).
    4. Export the image.
Both of these yeild the exact same image. The technical difference is that the second image has sRGB embedded? From a workflow difference I perfer the first one since I never have to check if Proof Colors is selected, the image looks the same no mater what. In the second workflow I have to always check if Proof Colors is selected otherwise what I see in photoshop doesn't look the same as the exported image.
PLEASE help me to understand, that while both of these workflows yeild the exact same image, why the second one is better because I feel like the first one is not.
P.S. Majority of the work I do is for the screen (web or application UI) so I'm not to worried about print work but wouldn't mind any pointers in relation to this situation.

It's about 1:30 AM in my part of the world I need to get some rest, so I'll have to be brief.
I've never seen so many misconceptions crammed into a single post as you've managed to get in your last one.
I'll try to get at least the most glaring ones.

    1. I do understand that of the millions on monitors there are none that match, and the exact reds, greens, and blues that I see on my screen differ from other screens (i have a number of computers in my home and am very aware of this).
Good, but that's not the point.

I also know that there is a huge gamma shift from PC to Mac as I use to be a PC users and am now on a Mac.
Only if the Mac user is still living in the stone age.  Macs should be calibrated to gamma 2.2, just like a PeeCee.  The old gamma 1.8 standard is a relic left over from the day of Apple monochrome monitors and LaserWriter b&w printers.  Even Apple recommends 2.2.

why would I work with a psd that is color managed, if it will all just get dumped by the browser anyways?
Because presumably you want to have a clue as to what your image looks like and what it might look like to others.
This is totally independent from whether you embed a profile or not.  Different issue.

    2. I'm not talking about EMBEDDING profiles into any of the images that I Save For Web.
    Neither am I.

    3. I am far more interested in color consistency rather than color accuracy as G Ballard points out in his tutorials.
The only way to achieve consistency is through a color managed workflow.  That's what Color Management is all about, consistency.
    eddit wrote:
From what G Ballard says, in a web browser, Macs apply the monitor profile and Windows applies sRGB.
Good grief!  That is so wrong or badly phrased that I feel bad even quoting it!   That statement is garbage/rubbish.
Only the bloody Slowfari (Apple's Safari) throws monitor profile at untagged files, i.e. files with no embedded color profile.  No other browser does that.  Period.  If the file is tagged, Safari will honor the embedded profile.
Firefox 3.9 (both Mac and Windows) correctly assumes sRGB for untagged files (files without an embedded color profile) with color management enabled in the guts of Firefox and/or even with color management disabled.
All other browsers on this planet, Mac and Windoze, are not color managed and assume sRGB for all files, with or without an embedded profile.
The reason the files look very similar to you is that you are dealing with the lowest common denominator (sRGB, where the s stands for sh¡t, as we know now), and probably your color monitor is pretty close to that common denominator.
If you happened to have an expensive truly wide-gamut monitor, your untagged files created in your monitor profile as working space would look like cr@p to you.
Get this through your head:  you cannot turn off color mangement in Photoshop, no matter what you do, the application won't let you.  You're just messing up with color management the way you work, you are not "turning it off" as you seem to think.

  • Accurate proof with inaccurate monitor? [color management question]

At the risk of sounding really dumb, here goes:
I have never had a true color managed workflow despite dabbling in it and even delving into custom profiling.
I don't want to shut the windows in my upstairs office and be dependent on unnatural light sources. I'm content to design knowing that what's on my monitor is not accurate.
But I do want to be able to print my own inkjet proofs and know that what I see on paper is at least 90% accurate to what I'll get off press. And I want to try my best to provide clients with PDF proofs that come as close as possible to press. (This last bit's probably a pipe dream given that the clients don't have calibrated monitors, but perhaps Acrobat 9's new Overprint Preview default settings will help somewhat?)
Is this realistic? Everything I know about color management starts with monitor calibration and I'm reluctant to take that step for fear of working in a cave-like environment.
Would love to hear thoughts from the community.

I'm still using my Sony Artisan, and dreading the day it fails to calibrate, but I'm definitely in the minority now. Adobe Gamma is useless for LCDs, and no longer ships, but the modern hardwares solutions are all supposed to be compatible. I suspect you'll get good results with a good monitor.
As far as being worthwhile, absolutely. My office uses North light and daylight balanced fluorescent lighting, so there isn't a harsh color change through the day. Things are probably most accurate at the time of day when the calibration was last done, but they are definitely better any time than they would be without it.

  • Help with saving images Photoshop Elements

Hi, I am using Photoshop Elements 11 and Windows 8 or 8.1.  Sometimes when I save images in PS E11, they do not save so that I can see the image as usual.  Instead they save with either the Photoshop logo or the Windows Pictures logo.  When I try to open them in Windows Pictures, I get a message saying something like "cannot open, wrong format" and I cannot post them onto the web either.  What am I doing? Please help, thank you.

    Hi Eeevanwok,
Please let me know if this is happening with particular file format?
And what all steps did you try from your end?

  • Help with my LR print color

The photos I edit through LR do not print the way they look in the develop module.  I have calibrated my monitors and I am printing in photo mode on my Epson printer.  The same printer produces accurate color for photos that have not been treated in LR.  What is the problem?  I am using the free trial version of LR.

There seem to be several issues, here.
    1) you wrote: "The same printer produces accurate color for photos that have not been treated in LR.  What is the problem?"
When your photos are not edited in LR, which program do you use? Is it a color-managing program?
    2) When you print from LR you have to
either let LR do the color management - then you have to switch off the printer's color management (by selecting <Application managed> or similar wording in your printer dialog).
or you can let your printer manage colors - then you have to select <Managed by Printer> in the <Print Job> panel of the Print Module.
If you choose color management by LR (by selecting a certain icc profile under <Color Management> in the <Print Job> panel and you have NOT switched off color management of the printer you can get color shifts or overly saturated colors.
If you choose color management by the printer, be sure that you select proPhoto RGB or Adobe RGB but not sRGB. The color space of LR is (a dertivative of) proPhoto RGB. If your printer prints that in sRGB you get overly saturated colors - particularly in the reds and greens.

  • Need help with links and fill color

Hi all, I just recently discovered liveCycle and am very impressed with it! I have been trying to make myself a homework calendar for a while now, and I have it done mostly, but there are a few more things I'd like to add that I don't know how to do.
I have some HTML and Java experience, but very little XML or JavaScript experience. I have a feeling that what I am trying to do is relatively simple, but I just can't figure it out! I have spent hours pouring over Google and the help files, and I feel like I have gotten close, but no joy yet.
I have attached my calendar so far (truncated to fit 5MB max attachment size). I'd like it to do two more things:
    1. Have the background color of the table cells change from white to green when the check box is checked.
(Alternately, I'd really like to get rid of the check boxes all thogether and just have the background of the table cells turn green with a keyboard shortcut, like "ctrl + D" for 'done'. But if that isn't possible, then the color change with the check box is fine.)
    2. I'd like the button called 'WORD DOC' in the upper right of the form to open a word document on my local computer. Where I just push that button and a work doc opens right up in Word in another window.
I was able to get .PDF documents to open up with those other two buttons there ('Big Java' and 'Beginning Java II') by adding the script
    app.openDoc("Big Java.pdf");
    and
    app.openDoc("Beginning Java II.pdf");
to each of the buttons respectively, but those PDFs need to be in the same folder as the calendar for that to work. I tried just altering that script by replacing the name of the PDF file with the name of a Word doc file like this:
    app.openDoc("test.docx");
but the button doesn’t work at all, it just does nothing.
So that’s what I am trying to do. I have spent hours messing around with anything I could think of to get this to work, but unfortunately I just don’t know the language well enough to get it to work.
I would really appreciate any advice on this at all. Thank you very much for your consideration.

    Hi,
Thanks very much for your response! I was able to use the code to make the box turn green by adding that script to the 'click' event of textbox and changing the language from FormCalc to JavaScript. So what happened was that when I clicked in the textbox, the color turned green.
I couln't firgure out how to add it to the checkbox though. When I tried, it didn't do anything. The problem now is that when I click in the textbox to add my homework, it turns green. I need it to turn green once I finish my homework.
This would work great if the texbox turned green when I SHIFT clicked the box. Is there anything I could add to that scipt to do that?

  • Help with hp LaserJet 100 color MFP M175nw

Hi all, have run the suggested HP troubleshooting solutions for the below problem but still persists.
When I print from any programme I get yellow smudges along the edge of the print outs at regular intervals. Initially I thought it was yellow toner smudging at the edges somehow and cleaned all the rollers etc. No joy so now think it may be light burn marks on the paper? Out of ideas to resolve the issue. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

    Hello,
I'm going to keep this short and simple.
We are/were hp partners once, I bought myself a HP Laserjet 100 color MFP M175nw at Staples in Belgium (Staples is bankrupt meanwhile - a pity for their employees)
I ordered toners on tonershop.be, these toners are approved, HP was fined for this sort of behaviour as 100% valid replacement.   HP forces me to do a software update, next thing I'm seeing is a big warning that I'm using counterfeit products and that I need to contact HP.   This is the world upside down, HP is violating the European free market.   Not the poor guy that wants to make an extra buck, for an underpaid salary in a sweatshop somewhere.
My printer is ruined (I have +25 years profound technical knowledge, experience, whatever)
But my printer is still under warranty no?   No HP (online tells me it isn't) so back to Staples, fortunately they had a copy of my invoice, so that I can be repaired in warranty but no, I the evil HP partner that sold for multiple hundreds of thousands of euros worth of HP products, I used LEGAL replacement toners.  Sorry Mr you have to buy a new printer.
Well I don't.    I'm going to take this whole sage (with the microchips with false information, on the toner cartridges full off very expensive toner powder.   And I'm going to mail it to Neelie Kroes and I really hope that HP get's convicted for market manipulation, price agreements, putting themselves above national legislation and lot's of other misconducts.
And because of management that is only interested in greed and their 25th Villa, Tesla car, Island, it will be the HP employee that pay the price for this sort of arrogance and plain stupidity.
HP: You have my contact details, send me an email.
And then the 'too big too fall' companies annoy you with useless questionnaires about their customer service, they ask themselves why nobody is buying their products and so on.
Anyway, for this type of printer I know the story from A-Z meanwhile, I have kept all evidence, invoices and whatever and once again I was once somebody that made you company what it is today after the HP/Compaq merger.
You board of directors, top management, yes Mrs. Ex CEO from Ebay), that is why people don't buy HP anymore.   High Prices, no service.
I prefer to keep this reaction anonymous, one could imagine why.
But I have my a digital print of this post, and signed it with a digital signature.
Because everything what I mentioned above is how it is.
Stop ruining our planet and the future of my children for your own greedy behaviour.
    Mr X.

  • Help with image analysis Photoshop CS4 Extended

Hi there - I recently went to the Birmingham NEC photo expo and saw a guy there giving a CS4 extended demo.  He showed how at the click of a button a folder of new photos were reduced to a smaller bunch of just the most tack-sharp ones.  I can't find out how to do this with my CS4 Extended - can anyone help - or am I just imagining it all  :-)))

    Sounds interesting.
Did he do that in Photoshop itself or Bridge or Lightroom?
Anyway, I suspect one could maybe achieve something like this in Photoshop with some fairly heavy Scripting, but I suspect the Script would have to actually open the images for analysis …

  • Photoshop Color Management

    Hi all,
I've noticed a small issue (that is probably my fault).  My color settings for some reason are all off.
When I open a document in my OS preview the colors are as they should be.  When I open that same document in Photoshop the colors are all de-saturated and muted.  When I use "Save for web" which gives me a preview the colors go back to and save as correctly as they looked in the OS preview.
What's going on here and how can I make Photoshop open the images as they should be with no color alteration.  In my color profile settings the only one that comes close is if i change it to "Monitor Colors"
    Thanks again in advance!

    Thank you Chris,
When I did windows update I must have checked to download new display drivers I'm using (Dell with Dell Screens).  It was loaded into the color settings as a profile, I hit delete and now all is well.

  • Help with updating and Adobe Application Manager (Max OS X)

    Hi,
I am a resent new customer of the cloud (student and teachers) service. I have started encounter some minor but kind of annoying technical problems. Before I registered for a cloud account I was running the Adobe Master Collection (trial) version on my MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.8.2). I successfully completed the registration to cloud and began to download and updated the app's. It went fine, until I came across a small little problem with Premier Pro. I was trying to import a few *.MOV files for a uni video that I have to do over Xmas.
Instead of spending time trying to figure out the problem I decide to uninstall and download/install all of the app on the my cloud hub, just incase it was something to so with my pervious installations. I couldn't directly re-download the apps via the cloud hub, so I had to re-download another trial version. However, now I can not get the Adobe Application Manager to work, I keep saying "Download Error, Please try again" I have tried it load of time, but keep getting the same message.
    Please Help,
    Damien

Moshpit84 did you utilize the uninstallers located in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers to remove your installation of Premiere Pro?  Also what version of the Adobe Application Manager are you currently using?

  • Help With Pen in Photoshop?

I just started using photoshop, but whenever I start to draw with my tablet or put down the pen on the canvas a little window pops up with all the brushes and settings as if I right clicked with my mouse.
I've tried changing this with my pen settings but nothing is working. I'm getting really frustrated. Please help?

Double check all the settings in the pen/tablet driver -- it sounds like the pen down has been set to right click instead of doing a mouse down event.  Photoshop just recognizes the events from the OS/drivers - but the driver determines what the pen will send to the OS and applications.

  • HELP with linking to photoshop

I have CS3 and lightroom, I recently did the lightroom 1.1 upgrade, but now when I go to the "photo" button or right click on the pic in develop to "open in photoshop" its greyed out and wont let me export to photoshop CS3, how do I fix this? Thanks for your help!
    Bill

I recently installed Photoshop CS3, and now, I have the same problem. I CAN access CS3 when I click on "Edit in Photoshop.exe...", but initially, I had to look for the program file. I don't think it supposed to work this way...especially since it wasn't this way with CS2.
With CS2, the drop down list from "PHOTO" consisted with the option, "Edit in Photoshop CS2."
Any input would be very helpful, Thanks!

  • Help with Web Template background color

    Hi,
i'm trying to change by HTML code the background color of a template but it behaves incosistently.
    when putting:
    <body bgcolor=#000000 ...
the template is white in the background, but with:
    <br>
    <body bgcolor=#000000 ...
    the template is black.
Plus when i see the final code generated in the web result, it seems that the server adds a bgcolor by his own, the code look like:
    <body bgcolor=#ffffff bgcolor=#000000...
i think this could be what is causing the incosistence, but i can't find where is this property the server is adding to the template.
    thanks for any help.
    JP

    Hi Juan,
This could be because of the style sheet you are using. If you want to make a chnage to the colors etc, try doing that in your stylesheet. You can find the style sheets in SE80 in the BW system. You can find out the one being used from your web template properties.
    Hope this helps...
