Help with transferring files from mac to another hard drive...

my mac wont let me transfer files from mac hard drive to a external hard drive, i've done it before, but suddenly it wont allow this? what could it be?

Also Its my mums computer, i'm trying to fix it for her, she's running osx 10.10.2

Hey guys, I just needed some urgent help.
My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified".
So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?

The Windows drive is probably formatted NTFS which is not natively writable
by the Mac. It should be formatted as FAT32 to be usable on both.

I need to transfer files and folders from my macbook air to my boss's external HDD but I keep getting error messages. Anyone out there, please help me. Most of the answers here kept saying erase data then copy; not possible for me because this HDD isn't mine. Thanks.

What is the format of that external HDD? If it is formatted NTFS, you can read but not write to it. You would have to install a third party application such as Paragon or Tuxera.

Just got a new MacBook Pro and need to transfer files from a very old Windows operating machine. Have the Seagate Slim portable drive. I downloaded the online software to format it for the windows files (taking 4 hours). Now, I'm told it will not work on the Apple product. Has anyone used this and had success? Or is there an easier way?

Issue with transfering files, images etc to external hard drive.

It wont let me drag folders when it did before to my external hard drive, is this to do with permissions or admin?? How do I change this so it works as I need to back up my system. All I want to do is drag them in, it comes up with a grey circle with a minus sign in it. Have used this hard drive before and it worked find. I was told the system on Os has been updated to be more secure.

As you found out OS X can read files from at HFTS drive however it cannot natively write to it. However if you still wish to write to it you can download and install NTFS-3G. Here is a link to it, that shoudl take care of the problem.

I was using a PC (Dell) for my work and used a WD Passport to backup all of my files. I own a Mac and will be using a Mac next year. Is it possible to get my files off of my WD Passport external hardrive onto my mac? if so, how?

Macs can read from (but not write to) Windows drives so you would copy the files and paste them on the Mac.

Transfered files from Mac Pro to iMac OS10.7. Copied bookmarks using "backup and restore" from "Organize bookmarks". File copied correctly as bookmarks 10-10-11.jsom, but would not restore on new iMac.

Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

Thanks. I will try going through TM. Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive. Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means. It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility. Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it. Will look into
Carbon Copy Cloner.

How does a person enable Sales reps to SYNC literature files from a cloud library down to their computer,.... but then not be able to have them accidentally delete the files by accident if they delete a file from their computer and then have it
sync upwards again.
Permission Level
"Read" allows to download individual files but not SYNC down and there are too many files for them to go and download each file every-time.
"View Only" is only visible on the browser and not useful when reps are in remote parts of the world.
"Contribute" allows the sales reps to SYNC but if they delete a file from their computer, then it deletes it for all which is to much.
There must surely be a way to allow a one way (cloud-to-hard-drive) SYNC to avoid folks from deleting files.
Does anybody know how to d this or if not, how do I have Microsoft consider such a perceived weakness compare to dropbox

You can achieve the functionality which you describe using the OneDrive (SkyDrive Pro) in Sharepoint 2013. You can setup read only folders to sync to achieve "one way" traffic. You will need Office 2013 locally to avail the full features of
the coauthoring environment if you are looking into that as well.

From the appropriate application (eg, Pages, TextEdit, etc) find your file(s) in iCloud (use File - Open), then highlight (you can multiple-select) the files you want to move, and drag them to your desktop or another Finder location.
