Help with transparency

At
http://www.aartifacts.com/Unleashed/index1.htm,
the stars in menu, the client wants them replacing the bullet
points. I don't know how to do that without a sold canvas color.
Can someone tell me how to achieve the star without having any
canvas color?
Thanks,
Dave

Create your star graphic with the purple canvas color, then
export it as a GIF. While in the export screen make the purple
color transparent by selecting it with the eye dropper tool. Finish
the export and you should be all set!

  • Help with Transparency Flattener!

I'm working with an Indesign file that has Illustrator links, which contain gradient meshes that use transparency. When I export my Indesign file, the transparency flattener does something very strange to the gradient mesh: it displays the vector lines of the mesh as dark grey lines.
I've found a way around this problem, but it is not ideal. If I export the file as Acrobat 4, I can change the transparancy flattener settings, and eliminate the issue. However, if I use Acrobat 4, I also lose the ability to add hyperlinks in the document (of which I have a number) Why is that that if you use a higher version of acrobat (5 or above) you suddenly lose the ability to manage the transparancy flattener? Why would older versions of the product allow more freedom and control?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below are screeshots of what it looks like in illustrator, and then flattened but the default flatteners of acrobat 5 and above. Really, I just want to be able to achieve a customized flattener that doesn't contain those dark lines, but not have to use actobat 4 to do it.
    Thanks!

    Hi Steve—
Your questions have half solved my problem for me!
I'm using the latest version of Indesign (7.5) and Illustrator (15.1.0)
I'm exporting using the High Quality Print setting (I know, a bit strange to use this setting AND want hyperlinks, but the PDF is intended for web distribution to people who might decide to print it) and when I choose anything above acrobat 4 in the compatibility drop down (5, 6, 7...) then the transparency flattener is greyed out in the advanced tab, with medium set as the default. If i want to choose my own flattener settings, I have to go with PDF 4, at which point I lose hyperlinks. I've also tried exporting choosing Adobe PDF (Interactive) from the initial menu, but that results in the same lines in the gradient mesh.
However, it turns out this issue is only happening when viewing the pdf in apple's preview app. It actually looks fine in acrobat. However, seeing as how Preview is the default app for viewing PDFs on a mac, I'm concerned that a bulk of our audience will be seeing it this way.
I know this likely puts things out of the realm of adobe, but if you have any wisdom to impart,  I'd appreciate it. Attached is what the file looks like viewed acrobat (above) and preview (below).
    thanks!

  • Help with transparent background for the pop up menu!

    Hello everyone,
I am working on a Web site which has a pop up menu created in Dreamweaver 8. The pop up is over a picture and I'm thinking about to make its background transparent. I'm not really a programmer to be able to do it manually but I'm familiar with JS. Would anybody be able to help me with this? I truly appreciate it.
I could find the code but don't know where to place it! The JS file is about 700 lines!!! I'm so confused...Below is the source file for the JS that you could download...

  • Help with transparent gif "ghosting"?

    Hello,
I'm trying to export an animated gif with a transparent background to use on my website, but I'm getting a very strange issue where, as the gif cycles through frames, the previous frames "ghost," or remain despite the new frame playing.
    An example:
In the first one, the old layers "ghost," in the second, there should be fire moving on top of the letters, but it only moves inside the letters. The PSD for the first image is here: http://puu.sh/7Wh7w.psd I'm saving this images by choosing file > save for web and devices, but no matter what I do in the preview window at that stage, the ghosting still appears. How can I fix this?

    Ruth,
    Welcome to the forum.
What format/CODEC do you need to Export to?
Many will support Transparency, but not all. For those that do, you usually have two available choices, such as Million + Colors, where the + is Alpha. In some, like FLV, there is an Export Transparency option.
Let us know your delivery scheme, and someone will point to the exact Export settings for Transparency.
    Good luck,

  • Please help with transparancy fade.

Hello, I have a script that I am using but cannot figure out how to make the bottom reflection fade to transparancy. The image on the left is what comes out from the script & the image on the right shows how I want the reflection to fade into transparancy.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
P.S. I'm a Photoshop n00b so please try to be simple in the instructions.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the image needs to remain at it's original 60px × 224px, the fade to transparency cannot change the image size.

I would forget the script.  Since you have little PS experience here is a simple way that might work for you.
Take image and click on marque tool and make a selection from the guy's foot to bottom of picture.  You will have a dotted line that marches like ants.
Next click on gradient tool, or toggle it from paint bucket tool.  In upper left corner click on 2nd box's down arrow to open gradient picker.  Choose second one that says "Forground to transparency".
    Choose white as forground color.
Take your cursor and drag it from top of box to bottom.  You should fade from white to transparency.  Vary opacity for effect you want.
Work on a copy of original, or at least use "save as"  after the above steps, and enter new name so original is preserved and can be recalled if you don't like result.

  • REALLY need some help with transparent background

This is really starting to bug me now as I have searched the forums and the web for hours and still cannot get this to work.
I am creating a simple one page site at http://freeselfhelpebooks.org/50ofTheBestPDProducts/
I want the header and footer image to have a transparent background with only the text showing, so that the text shows on the background image.
So far I have created the header image with a transparent background Modify > Canvas > Canvas Colour > Transparent all good so far.  I have added some text.  Then I save as file type PNG 32, however I still get the background as white as you can see above.
I have tried PNG 8 with alpha transparency, no transparency but to no avail.  I have even downloaded Photoshop CS6 and have the same issues.  What am I doing wrong here?

First of all, your header graphic is fine; it's a transparent PNG. Your footer is a JPEG, which does not support transparency, so you need to resave that file into a different format (like PNG32, or PNG8 w/alpha transparency).
As I was trying to suggest, if you're confused about your graphics, check them in a graphics editor or viewer, not in a web page inside a web browser. Web development is a complex beast, and a lot can go wrong.
In the HTML of your web page, there is a class called "content" being applied to tables and images. This class has a background image being applied to it, which is responsible for the white background on those elements.

  • Need help with transparency and color quality in the forground

I need to make an image that is comprised of a collage in the back with a clear visible logo on top. I'm not sure if I'll need to change the hue's of the background collage images to create the image or if theres a way to make the image somewhat see through but keep true to the colors of the forground?

I agree with Trevor. I think you are over thinking the issue. Just place a logo in the same document, scale it, adjust its opacity if necessary and your done. As for the background of the logo, that can depend on how it was created. Preferable in photoshop so that you have a transparent background. But if the background happens to be pure white or black, you can use blend modes to remove the background.
But I am getting ahead of my self. Lets see how you do, post your results, if necessary a screen capture of photoshop with the layers panel open.

  • Help with transparent background

I'm trying to get a transparent background on this attached image. It is made of a bunch of little dots, cool right? Except when you are trying to get the background removed. I basically need to get just the dots and get rid of all the grey/white background.
I picked up the file from shutterstock. I have the JPG and EPS files. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

if you open the eps in illustrator, is the white background an object you can select?

  • Help with transparency in logo

    Hi all,
My company logo is an ai file (I'm using Illustrator CS4). The original logo is made up of shapes that form block letters, with white paths on top of these shapes blocking out the excess color in order to form the letters. I need to make these white paths transparent so I don't have to put a white box around the whole logo in the ai or eps version (I know when exporting to PS I can make those white paths transparent and save as a gif or tif, but I'm trying to figure out how to do this in vector). When I group all the white areas and set to no color it removes the white background, but then the red shapes that it's covering up below come through. What am I missing? Thanks so much

Without actually seeing the artwork construction, best guess is all I've got....
Select everything, Object > Expand (Or Expand Appearance, then Expand)
    Pathfinder Panel > Merge
    Select the white objects, delete.

  • Help with transparency & blend modes?

Well, I'm making a book cover
The idea is that I have a background on top of which i put a label which will contain the name of the book but will "cut out" through the label to show the background.
I've done a sketch in Ideas, here it is
Now, the question is how would I do this in Illustrator, but with a actual object and a font instead of erasing out of a rectangle on an iPhone
    Many thanks in advance!

    Jonas,
    You may:
    1) Create the Type (no need to outline) on top of the label,
    2) Select both (and nothing more) and in the Tranparency palette flyout tick Make Opacity mask.
If the Type is black have both Clip and Invert Mask unticked (if it is white, tick Invert Mask, hardly relevant here).

  • Help with PageMaker 7.0, Transparent Backgrounds, and Feathering in Photoshop CS5

    Hi all,
I am hoping  someone here can help me out with a problem that I've been having for  more than a week that I can't seem to figure out and it's driving me  crazy.
I have a friend who's trying to put together a  graphical instruction manual using PageMaker 7.0.  My friend would like  to have the borders on the pictures in the manual be softened and the  background needs to be transparent, because each page in the manual will  have a background watermark picture.
I am running into a  number of problems.  I have been using the feather and contrast options  under Refine Edges in Photoshop CS5.  While the picture looks and prints  great from Photoshop, as soon as I save the picture to a file format  that I can import into Word and then PageMaker (more on this step  below), the feathering only either becomes white instead of transparent  (the rest of the transparent part of the picture is still fine) or the  feathering becomes horribly pixelated.
I am not sure which  step in the process is causing the picture to degrade.  The two file  formats that seem to at least retain the transparency through the  importing process are PNG and TIFF, albeit horribly pixelated.  Could  using these file formats cause the quality issue that I am describing?   Could it be transferring it through Word first, as described below?
Is  there are any other methods that one can use in Photoshop CS5 to soften  the border of a picture other than feathering that may work better for  these purposes.
Regarding the use of Word to retain the  transparency into PageMaker... are there any better ways of  accomplishing this?  In order for the transparency to be retained, I  need to add a text box, send it behind the picture, group it together,  and copy the group over in order to retain the transparency using Word.   This, needless to say, is a horribly huge pain in the ***.  Any  suggestions that could cut down the number of steps would be  appreciated.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Pagemaker does support transparency for placed files, just not
partial transparency like drop shadows or feathering that
    would result in partial transparency.
You can place an object into pagemaker without getting the
white background by making a clipping path of the object
and then saving the file as tiff file. Then you would use
    File>Place in pagemaker.
You could also put a background behind your object that matches the page in pagemaker
or use photoshop to make the layout.

  • Help with making part of a picture transparent

I am very new to Indesign, and I am trying to teach myself how to use it. I was using Microsoft Publisher for my last project, in which I was able to use a transparency tool to click on part of a .gif image to make it transparent, whilst leaving the rest of the image intact.
I am trying to place an image on top of a background image using Indesign. My image is a picture of a sun, surrounded with a white box. When I place the sun on top of the background colour, I still get the white box around the sun, and I can't find any way of eliminating the white box, whilst retaining the yellow sun image. I hope this makes sense!
Can anyone help with his? I will need to do this quite a few times during the course of my project so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks. Bev

Is it fair to make the sweeping statement that "GIF is not a print format"?
I don't know how “fair” the statement is, but it’s balls accurate. GIFs are RGB, limited to 256 colours only, and have only one bit of transparency. The format is absolutely inappropriate for print.
I can think of a few situations in which GIFs are useful for print as well as the web. For example, GIFs allow nonprofessionals to use logos with solid blocks of color, simple transparency, without color management concerns, and so on, both on the web and in almost all print applications that nonprofessionals use.
Automatic transmissions and power steering make it possible for a recent driver’s license recipient to take the family station wagon around Laguna Seca. That doesn’t make him Emerson Fitipaldi or make the car a Formula-1 racer.
Isn't it a cheap-and-cheerful, universal, perfectly OK format for print?
    No.
It has limitations that are obvious to professionals, but it isn't always a mistake to use it in print.
It sure is. Print does not mean “printed to my $60 inkjet.” Print means “printed on a digital colour printer or on a press.” In that context, GIF’s only use is as a source for later conversion to a superior format. Even if printing to a POS inket, conversion to PSD, TIF, Illustrator, PDF, or even PNG would put the image into a superior format that is more suitable for print.
GIF is not suitable for print. Period.

I suspect that you are working with some version of Photoshop Elements. If that is correct, then be advised that some how
your thread got posted in the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum (video editing) instead of the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum (photo editing).

  • Need help with a currently "in-use" form we want to switch to Adobes hosting service

Hi, I am in desperate need of help with some issues concerning several forms which we currently use a paid third party (not Adobe) to host and "re-distribute through email"...Somehow I got charged $14.95 for YOUR service, (signed up for a trial, but never used it)..and now I am paying for a year of use of the similar service which Adobe is in control of.  I might want to port my form distribution through Adobe in the hopes of reducing the errors, problems and hassles my customers are experiencing when some of them push our  "submit button". (and I guess I am familiar with these somewhat from reading what IS available in here, and I also know that, Adobe is working to alleviate some of these " submit"  issues, so let's don't start by going backwards, here) I need solutions now for my issues or I can leave it as is, If Adobe's solution will be no better for my end users...
We used FormsCentral to code these forms and it works for the most part (if the end-user can co-operate, and thats iffy, sometimes), but I need help with how to make it go through your servers (and not the third party folks we use now), Not being cruel or racist here, but your over the phone "support techs" are about horrible & I cannot understand them or work with any of them, so I would definitely need someone who speaks English and can understand the nuances of programming these forms, to please contact me back. (Sorry, but both those attributes will be required to be able to help me, so, no "newbie-interns" or first week trainees are gonna cut it).... If you have anyone who fits the bill on those items and would be willing to help us, please contact me back at your earliest convenience. If we have to communicate here, I will do that & I can submit whatever we need to & to whoever we need to.
I need to get this right and working for the majority of my users and on any platform and OS.
You may certainly call me to talk about this, and I have given my number numerous times to your (expletive deleted) time wasting - recording message thingy. So, If it's not available look it up under [email protected]
(and you will probably get right to me, unlike my and I'm sure most other folks',  "Adobe phone-in experiences")
    Thank You,

Well, thanks for writing back...just so you know...I started using Adobe products in 1987, ...yeah...back then...like Illustrator 1 & 9" B&W Macs ...John Warnock's Helvetica's....stuff like that...8.5 x 11 LaserWriters...all that good stuff...I still have some of it working on a mac...much of it was stuff I bought. some stuff I did not...I'm not a big fan of this "cloud" thing Adobe has foisted upon the creatives of the world...which I'm sure you can tell...but the functionality and usefulness of your software can not be disputed, so feel free to do whatever we will continue to pay for, ...I am very impressed with CC PS on the 64 bit PC and perhaps I will end up paying you the stipend that you demand for the other services.
So  I guess that brings us to our problem.. a few years back and at the height of the recession and near bankruptcy myself,  I was damn lucky and hit on something and began a small arts and crafts supply service to sell my products online to a very "niche market" ...I had a unique product and still sell that product (plus others) online...My website is www.vinylcouture.com...Strange? Yes...but there is a market it seems, for everything now, and this is the market I service...Catagorically, these are 99%+ women that use these "adhesive, sticky backed vinyl products"  to make different "craft items" that are just way too various and numerous to go into... generally older women, women who are computer illiterate for the most part...and all this is irrelevant to my problem, but I want you to have every bit of background on this and especially the demographic we are dealing with, so we can get right to the meat of the problem.
OK...So about two years ago, I decided to offer a "plain sheet" product of a plain colored "stick back" vinyl... it is available in multiple quantities of packs ( like 5 pieces, 10 pieces, 15 pieces, in a packi  & so on)...and if you are still on my site.. go to any  "GO RIGHT TO OUR ORDER PAGE"  button, scroll down a little...and then to the "PLAIN VINYL" section...you will see the Weebly website order process.) You can back out from here, I think,..but, anyway this product is available in 63 colors + or - a few. So then the problem is,  how do they select their individual colors within that (whatever) pack?... .
So my initial idea was to enable a "selection form" for these "colors" that would be transmitted to me via email as 'part" of the "order process".. We tried getting our customers to submit a  " a list" ( something my competitiors still do, lol, poor bastards)......but that..is just unbelievable..I can't even begin to tell you what a freakin' nightmare that was...these people cannot even count to 10, much less any higher... figuring out what colors to list and send me... well, lets just say, it wasn't working......I had to figure out a better way...Something had to be done.
So after thinking this all out,  and yeah...due to my total ignorance, i figured that we could make a form with Live Cycle Designer (Now Forms Central)...(back then something that was bundled with Adobe Acrobat Pro), I believe, and thats what this thing was authored in... and it would be all good...LOL!
Well not so simple...as you well know, Adobe Acrobat would NOT LET YOU EMAIL anything from itself.....it just wouldn't work (and I know why, and all that hooey), but not being one to take NO for answer,.I started looking for a way to make my little gizmo work.. So I found this company that said they can "hijack" (re-direct actually) the request to email, bypass the wah-wah, and re-transmit it to the proper parties.....for less than $100 a year,  I think...its called http://pdf-fillableforms.com/.
A nice gentleman named Joseph Silva helped us program the thing to go to his servers and back out. Please dont hassle them...I need them...for now..it basically does work...try it...you should get back a copy of the form that you filled out...good luck however,  if you're on MAC OSX or similar...
I have included a copy of both of our forms (and feel free to fill it out and play with it)...just put test somewhere on it...(and you must include YOUR email or it will balk)..they are supposed to be mostly identical, except one seems to be twice as large....generating a 1.7 meg file upon submission, while the other one only generates a 600K file or so...thats another issue for another day or maybe you can advise on that also...
OK so far so good......In our shop, once Grandma buys a 10 pack (or whatever), Only then she gets to the link on her receipt page ro the relevant "selection form" ,(this prevents "Filling and Sending"  with "no order" and "no payment", another early problem we had)... which they can click on and it will usually download and open up on their device if all goes well...Then our little form is supposed to be fillable and is supposed to ADD UP all the quantities, so grandma knows how many she is buying and so forth right on the fly,  and even while she changes her mind..., and IT'S LARGE so grandma can see it, and then it TOTALS it all up for them, ( cause remember, they can NOT add)..,  except there is a programming bug (mouse-click should be a mouse-up probably or something..) which makes you click in the blank spaces to get to a correct TOTAL...about 70-80% of our customers can enable all these features and usually the process completes without problems for them especially on PC's running Windows OS and Acrobat Reader X or XI...at least for most... Unfortunately it is still not the "seamless process" I would like or had envisioned for the other folks out there that do have trouble using our form....  Many folks report to us the following issues that we know of.  First of all it takes too much time to load up...We know its HUGE...is there anyway that you can see, to streamline this thing? I would love for it to be more compact...this really helps on the phones and pads as I'm sure you well know.
Some just tell us,"it WON'T work"....I believe this is because they are totally out of it and dont even have Adobe Reader on their machine, & don't know how to get it ( yes, we provide the links).....or it's some ancient version....no one can stop this one...
It almost always generates some kind ( at least one time)  of "error message" which we do warn them about..., telling one,  basically that "Acrobat doesnt even like this happening at all, and it could be detrimental to ones computer files", blah-blah...(this freaks grandma out really bad)...& usually they end up not even trying to send it...  and then I get calls that even you wouldn't believe...& If they DO nut up and push the Red "Submit Form" button, it will usually send the thing to us (and also back to them at the "required email address" they furnished on the form, thats what the folks at the "fillable forms place" do) so, if it's performing it's functions, why it is having to complain?. What are we doing wrong?....and how can I fix it?...Will re-compiling it or saving it as a newer version of "FormsCentral" correct any of these problems ?
Ok, so that should keep you busy for a minute and we can start out with those problems...but the next thing is, how can I take advantage of YOUR re-direct & hosting services?, And will it get rid of the error messages, and the slowness, and the iOS incompatibilities ? (amazingly,  the last iOS Reader version worked almost OK.. but the newest version doesnt seem to work with my form on my iphone4)  If it will enable any version of the iOS to send my form correctly and more transparently, then it might be worth the money...$14.95 a MONTH you say. hmmmmm...Better be good.
Another problem is, that I really don't need 5000 forms a month submitted. I think its like 70-100 or less....Got any plans for that?  Maybe I'm just not BIG ENOUGH to use Adobe's services, however in this case, I really don't care whose I do use as long as the product works most correctly for my customers as well as us. Like I said, If I'm doing the best I can, I won't change anything, and still use the other third party, If Adobe has a better solution, then i'm all for that as well. In the meantime, Thanks for any help you can provide on this...
