Help with troubleshooting PowerBook 12"

I am working on a friends PowerBook 12" (2002) which had a problem booting up.
It would hang on a gray screen and do nothing. When I tried to boot from a 10.4 install disk nothing would happen, but when I used my Leopard install disk it did boot although the message box said I couldn't install 10.5 on the machine. I used Disk Utility to check the HDD and it showed some file corruption but it couldn't fix the problem or format the disk.
I changed the HDD and got all the way to the blinking "?" but still could not boot from the 10.4 install disk. 10.5 still boots though. Used the Disk Utility on the 10.5 disk and formatted HDD then tried the 10.4 install again with no resolution. Disk Warrior showed nothing is wrong with the new HDD.
Items that didn't work:
Booting from OS 9.2.2, OS 10.4
re-setting PRAM, PMU
pulled sxpantion RAM card
Items that sort of worked:
Booting from OS 10.5 and Disk Warrior
Checked both OS 9.2.2 and 10.4 install disks on my MBP and they do mount.
Anything else before I pull out the 1,000 some odd screws to change out the logic board?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
When you partitioned the new hard drive, did you specify an Apple partition map versus a GUID partition? I've seen where Disk Utility in Leopard can default to a GUID partition, which is used only for Intel-based systems. Bring up Disk Utility from your Leopard disk, and ensure the new hard drive has an Apple partition map.

  • [SOLVED]No sound with ALSA. I'm looking for help with troubleshooting.

    Hi!
Recently I bought a new laptop (HP Probook 450 G1). For some reason I can't hear sound from the laptop's speaker or headphones. I already read the troubleshooting guide on wiki. Unfortunately none of the solutions described on the wiki helped. I'm not using PulseAudio and I'm out of ideas.

So that the right output becomes the all-important *default* output. And it's conveniently a simple one-liner.
I am very aware of that, why not use index instead? It is as convenient as enable. Why leave the user with a disabled device, when it can continue to work? I consider this highly inefficient, because it does not solve the actual issue and creates a potential problem in the future.
In this case, user interaction was the cause, so it does not matter.
    Edit: Typo.

  • Need Help with Titanium Powerbook board replacement

    Hi,
I have couple questions about replacing my motherboard for my Titanium 15" Powerbook. It's a 400Mhz w/ 256MB Ram and 10GB hard drive. Would it be possible to upgrade with a different board? Would it fit? Are there any sites that offer great prices for upgrades for this? Any information would be great. It is in great condition and I would like to make use of it. Thank you for your time.

Hi, Thank you both for the reply. I will check out the web site. I noticed in your equipment that you have a TiBook as well. How did you get it up to 1GHz? did you change the processor on that 500Mhz board? Let me know. Thanks. Appreciate your help.

  • Encrypted MAPI on WAAS 5.0.3a I need a little help with troubleshooting

So, I stumbled upon this portion of the 5.0.1 configuration guide that spells out step by step how to configure encrypted mapi acceleration:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v501/configuration/guide/policy.html#wp1260556
    1. Configure DNS settings - Done
    2. Configure NTP settings - Done
    3. Verify WAE devices are registered and online with the WAAS Central Manager - Done
    4. Configure SSL Peering Service - Did this, seems to be working, but it would be great if someone could provide me with some show commands that will verify this is configured properly.
    5. Verify WAN Secure mode is enabled - Did this, but the command "show accelerator wansecure" shows it is enabled and running, but seems like useless information, anyone know any better commands to verify this?  No tcp session are coming up wansecure...
    6. Configure windows domain settings and perform domain join - I did this on the Data Center WAE-674 only, the computer account was created in the domain.
    7. Configure domain identities - Ok, I was a little confused here, but I used the machine account name that I created in the previous step, seems to be working, the lack of explanation/troubleshooting at this point is very frustrating.  The image shown uses a different name than the device name in the picture...
    8. Enable Windows Domain Encrypted Service - Done, very strait forward
    9. Enable Encrypted MAPI Traffic Optimization - Done, also very strait forward
So, from the WAE, I run the command "show stat conn" I still see the TG connections with 0.00% to the mail server.  Called user, had them exit from (and I verified session closed) and reconnect to exchange, still TG 0.00%.  Not sure if this one was useful or not, but "show stat conn | inc W" no sessions with W.
I did find that this command "show windows-domain encryption-service keylist" seems to be the most useful (even though I didn't find it on any Cisco support page, found it by stumbling through available commands, trying each one in turn) showing the two requests to the two exchange servers were successful.  Which makes me think I did something right, who knows exactly what since the EMAPI is still not decrypted.
I have no errors showing on the CM Management console.  I did have some errors pop up when I was generating the self signed certificates, but they all cleared when I finished all the devices.  I am going to reboot the WAE tonight and see if things start picking up tomorrow or if I get any errors after reboot.
I am hoping that someone has some good show commands or debug commands that will point to where or what the problem is.

Ok, I got it working.  Well, it is meeting the criteria I specified above anyway.
    1. to verify your SSL is working properly: "show crypto ssl services host peering"
    2. Wansecure is enabled/disabled, there is no verification, very strait forward.
    3. DO use the computer account you create when you join the domain as the machine account.
Show commands to verify you did everything correctly:
    "accelerator mapi verify encryption-settings"
    "show windows-domain encryption-service keylist"
If you did everything correctly, you should get keys from the exchange server(s).
Now, the issue I ran into.  Our 2 exchange servers are both behind a Citrix Netscaler for load balancing.  If a user connects directly to the exchange servers, it works, if they connect to the netscaler, it fails to accelerate.  I can not get a key from the netscaler, not sure if there is a way to manually exchange keys and force the to devices to trust each other.  Anyone who may have seen this, your help would be greatly appreciated.
Just to clarify, MAPI acceleration works fine through the netscaler, it is just the EMAPI that fails.  EMAPI and MAPI both work fine through exchange, but then I lose the load balancing the netscaler provides.

  • HT1338 where can i get a flash drive for my powerbook G4? or where can i go to get help with my powerbook G4

    CAn someone help me?

You mean an SSD drive to replace the internal drive?  Won't work.  Your powerbook has an IDE/ATA drive interface so you need an SSD with a PATA interface.  I know www.Newegg.com used to sell Transcend PATA SSD drives, but they do not seem to stock them anymore.
Current SSD drives are all SATA, and again, some places used to sell bridge cards for those to hook up to IDE/ATA devices, but those would not fit into a laptop.
You could check Amazon or places for Transcend IDE SSD drives.

  • Hi guys. in need help with my PowerBook G4

here the problem, i got this PowerBook G4 from a friend of mine in the US. now i cant update the softwares because it needs a password and when i asked my friends, he told me he forgot the password.
is their any other way to disable the password or what can you suggest that i do?
be gentle with me, im a newbie here!
thanks for the help in advance.

If you got the computer used, the first thing you should do is erase the drive and start from scratch with your own system.
Who knows what condition the system is in, and you could save yourself a lot of hassle in the future by starting fresh.
Otherwise, do as Yang suggested and reset the password via the install DVD.

  • Need help with G4 powerbook

I am having issues with my G4 Power Book. It keeps unexpectedly quitting most of my software programs like Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, even Safari, Mail, Keynote and Pages.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi,
Got a couple of questions: What are the spec's of this PB? Like how much Ram? How fast of Chip? How full is the hard drive? If you have a temp monitor, what is the processor temp normally? If you have a memory monitor, how low are you letting it get? Do you run all these programs at once? Or one by one? Do you ( have you ) run the maintenance cron jobs regularly?
Safari (version 1.3.2) is known to close when going to certain sites, like Google Maps, and others.
Mail is known to get fluky when the inbox gets over-full.
If you have minimal ram, and a fairly full hard drive, other memory intense programs simply cannot function (and throw in the towel). Adobe and PhotoShop fit this. Keynote and Pages could too, depending on how you are using them.
Once we know what your spec's are it will be easier to troubleshoot what is happening.

  • Need help with troubleshooting VPN betwen Cisco 2911 and Dell Sonicwall 4060

    Hello all,
I am trying to set up a VPN Tunnel between the devices mentioned above.  The tunnel appears to be established, but I've encountered some issues along the way.  I can ping from the Cisco 2911 to a server behind the Sonicwall, but I cannot ping from that server to the Cisco router unless the router is pinging the server at the same time.  What should I do to fix this problem?
UPDATE:  The tunnel is no longer working between the two devices.  The end result I am looking for is to have a VPN tunnel between these two devices which does NAT and allows me to ping across without having to constantly ping to keep the session open.  Before the tunnel went down, I was able to ping that server behind the sonicwall using a port on the inside of the firewall as a source port for the ping, and at one point I was able to ping back to the router from the server, but was unable to ping beyond that interface.  I think the problem that I am running into has to do with the zone-based firewall configurations that are already on the router.  I don't want to mess with those configurations already in place, but I am not sure how to get this tunnel working.  I'm fairly certain I need to start from the beginning in regards to this tunnel, but I cannot figure out how to configure this the right way.
Thanks in advance for any help
    Michael

Finally the testing is successful on Sonicwall NSA 240 as well with Cisco ASA. Actually somehow Sonicwall firewall was discovering my VPN Box's Public leg (Private IP (10.10.50.10)) as well, which was behind a Live Peer IP (203.124.x.x). As per security policies it shouldnt have been discovered on the remote end. i will bring this in Cisco TAC notice.
Logs of Sonicwall were showing ASA local ike id as "203.124.x.x" & ASA Remote ike id "10.10.50.10".
Sonicwall sets these two parameters with PSK (local ike id & remote ike id). This is other than setting the Peer IP. i asked my client to add my ASA actual and NAT IP in these two parameters and the VPN got UP.

  • Please help with troubleshooting Applescript invoked by Apple Mail rule

I set up an account with Boxcar to get push notification of incoming email on my iPhone. I did this because I passworded my iPhone and cannot see incoming messages without entering the password. Now all I need to do is glance at the screen to see whether it's worth it or not to look at the email. In order to use the Boxcar service, I needed to set up a rule to redirect all incoming mail to my private address on Boxcar. The issues that I have are two-fold. First, I do not like blindly forwarding email content to Boxcar regardless of their stated claim that they strip out the sender and subject of a message and discard the rest. Second, if I get a large incoming email, then My method will have to send the large content out again - a waste of resources. To get around this, I tried to write an Applescript for Apple Mail that is invoked by a rule applicable to all messages. The script redirects all messages to my private Boxcar email address and strips out the content of the message. The script follows:
    using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages selectedMessages
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ""
    repeat with theMessage in selectedMessages
    set boxcarMessage to redirect theMessage
    tell boxcarMessage
    make new to recipient at beginning of to recipients with properties {address:"[email protected]"}
    set content to " "
    set subject to theMessage's subject
    end tell
    send boxcarMessage
    end repeat
end perform mail action with messages
    end using terms from
The problem with this script is that it still sends out the content even though I thought I was setting it to a single space. Other than that, it does just what I need it to do. Any suggestions on corrections, an easier Applescript, or another way to approach the whole issue? One drawback to this approach is that I need to have a Mac running at home that processes the rule for the incoming messages - probably there is no way around this?
    Thanks!

That makes sense, but then that gets back to your original comment:
"redirecting the message will send the entire message, as-is."
I tried to eliminate the attachments by adding the line:
    delete boxcarMessage's attachments
but it did not work - the attachments were redirected also. So here is the script as it stands now:
    using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages selectedMessages
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ""
    repeat with theMessage in selectedMessages
    set boxcarMessage to redirect theMessage
    delete boxcarMessage's attachments
    tell boxcarMessage
    make new to recipient at beginning of to recipients with properties {address:"[email protected]"}
    end tell
    delay 3
    send boxcarMessage
    end repeat
end perform mail action with messages
    end using terms from
I appreciate the input. Intuitively it seems like this is doable, but the solution escapes me.

  • PC Crash, Need help with troubleshooting PLEASE!!!

Basically I built my current system about 7 months ago. No issues ran like a speed demon. Today I went to restart the pc and after the POST, I get the Windows loading page(Win 7 64-bit) error page windows failed to load. So I decided to reformat the drive and start with a fresh copy.
Next after loading mobo drivers for my MSI P67-GD55 (B3) which has the latest bios and drivers, I restarted the pc, and right after POST I get a BSOD for a split second and then straight to the Windows failed to load page.
Went into my bios and ran mem test, ALL OK.
Checked all cables for good connections to my SSD and all other drives, all good. Any thoughts yall?

Random reboots and lockups may point to a few things.
    1) CPU socket wires. Look out for bent / broken wires on the grid.
    2) Overheating. Though watercooled but chances are still there if the contacts are not screwed in properly.
    3) Faulty PSU. This one will leads more to random restarts.
    4) Faulty board.
    5) Faulty RAMs. BSODs in most cases.
1.) Overheating definitely not a problem. ALL contacts A OK. Room temp never exceeds 70 degrees. I only have a mild overclock going on it, with awesome airflow in the case. I have a pushpull setup on my radiator.
2.) RAM has been tested several times by different programs, ALL PASSED.
    3.) Power supply test OK.
4.) CPU socket wires? Not following kind of a semi noob. I built this thing over 7 months ago and never a hickup, now this issue has started.
5.) At this point with the mobo still being under warranty, I would at the very least like to send it to MSI and have it tested FULLY.
For the last couple of days it has now been running OK, the only issue is with reboots. When I reboot the PC sometimes it boot loops.
Seeing as I am now thinking about selling the parts off, as I am no longer needing or using the PC I built, I would not feel comfortable selling off the parts off unless I was positive that the mobo was in perfect working order. Turns out I built this pc for ripping my entire DVD/BluRay library which is done, and gaming which I seem to not really be interested in anymore.  I don't find myself really using the desktop I built anymore. Hopefully I can sell it off part by part and buy a laptop which I will be able to get more use out of.
So I would at least want to make sure the motherboard was OK before selling it. Might as well do it under warranty.
Anyone familiar with the MSI warranty RMA process?

  • Very Tired Of This...Need Help With Startup

I had the original iPod 2g that came out awhile ago, everything worked fine. I got that stolen from me and just recently bought a Pod Classic 80gb and I cant get my computer to even recognize it exists. I've tried updating to the newest version of iPod and the installwizard never finishes. It says that it ran into an "unexpected error" and to just try again later. It said that Quicktime didnt install either (I already have Quicktime installed) and that iTunes needs it to run. This is like my 4th iPod and my 2nd one today, I have no clue why I keep running into these problem. I bought the Zune earlier to day but thats way more of a headache than the iPods are...if I could ever get it to work.
Point is, I have to wait at the DMV for about 6hrs later on today and was hoping to have this working by then. $300 isnt cheap and so far all i've managed to do is run my battery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: The Message says "The installer has encountered an unexpected error with the package. The error code is 2330." Then it does its "Rollback" action. Then I get the error message for Quicktime. Then it gives me a summary saying that such and such failed, and that I can try again at a later time. Hope that helps.

What you can do (I think) is when in iTunes, go to File and select to Export your library. You should be able to save it somewhere and upload it later on if it ever did crash or get deleted.
I was planning on exporting my files, then just removing iTunes altogether. ThenI was going to go back and reinstall it, hoping that evertyhing would be reset but. I think I just realized that my main problem right now is that my computer doesnt recognize that I even have an iPod plugged in. I've tried all of my USB ports and I never get the pop-up message, nor do I see i in My Computer. If I could get the cpu to recognize it, I may be able to solve the problem myself.
but as for you Vanimal, you may want to try a 3rd party such as Xplay. I just installed that and its pretty helpful with troubleshooting but again, I cant even get my iPod to communicate with the computer so it's of no use to me. If all else fails, go with Xplay and just use that from now on.
If anybody has any info on how to get my iPod recognized by my CPU, I'd greatly appreciate it.

  • Help with broken? macbook. Boot commands dont work.

I have an old macbook that is from late 2008 and is kinda old. First time it did 3 beeps (ram error) So i exchanged the ram and now it starts. But i get stuck at greyscreen, and sometimes at a flashing folder with a Question mark.
I did try to go through the community here but i cant use any of the commands people are recommending..
    Command + Alt + R dont work
    Alt during boot dont work.
Command + alt wont work... No commands do anything except leaving a blank screen and a cursor.
If i dont hold any keys during boot i eventually get the flashing questionmark folder.
    Any suggestions?
Can i reinstall it from a USB and how do i do it if i cant use the bootup commands? :S
(The keyboard seems to work so that cant be the issue)
    Thanks.

i dont know what the existing OS is.
Cannot help with troubleshooting since you do not know which OS is installed on your comp.  If you purchased your MBP from a private party, ask them.  Better yet, did the previous owner provide you w/the DVDs that originally came w/the MBP?  If not, you purchased a glorified door stop.
If none of the suggestions in the KB Article work out, take the MBP to your local AS or an AASP.
There is nothing more for me to suggest until you determine which OS you are working with and you have possession of the system DVDs that originally came w/the MBP.

  • Help with using an external USB hard drive to start up a powerbook?!

Hello ppl of the apple support communities,
My uncle recently gave me an Apple Powerbook G4 with a bad internal hard drive and the Mac OS X installation disk that came with the machine! In my country Greece to repair this powerbook costs about 140$ that i dont have! I need your help! I connected the external USB disk to 2 USB ports, and started the Mac OS X 9.2 installation! I went to Utilities Menu checked the disk erase tab and at Volume Format i used ''Mac OS Extended(journaled)'' and checked the box ''Install Mac OS 9 Driver'' and then click Erase. However the box for the ''Install MAc OS 9 disk drivers remained checked.(Seems like they cant be installed!)Then when i go to the partition tab ad at ''Options...'' i cant find this GUID thing and i can only choose between ''Apple Partition Scheme'' and ''PC Partition Scheme''!!

GUID partition scheme is required for Intel-based systems. The Powerbook would use the Apple partition scheme.
While it's probably what was provided with the Powerbook, I wouldn't bother with OS X 9.2. If you plan to use it to connect to the internet, there are so many advances that have taken place since 9.2, especially in handling web sites and security. And some web sites rely on newer versions of plug-ins, like Flash, to name one. You should also expect that watching online video's will be difficult, as even the last Powerbooks have difficulties with some video's.
    Good luck with your project!
