Help with understanding the structure of iPhoto

I'm trying to organize my photos in Library => Photos. How are photos organized in the iPhoto Library under Photos? It appears that I have many folders within this section with Folder Names and Dates, but when I try to create a new folder, it creates an album outside of this area instead of a folder within Photos. Do I need to do all of my organizing outside of Library==>Photos, and create albums elsewhere? If so, then would I cut and paste photos from Photos to the new albums I creating, eventually removing all photos from Photos? I'm really confused with this thing. Not intuitive like a PC where I can see all my folder locations. Hopefully I will get used to this.

Yes there is a bit of a learning curve with iphoto. It's not that large but it is there.
And you know, you don't have to use it, you can just use folders like you did on the PC. It's very limited but it works.
Iphoto is similar to iTunes in that it uses a library. Everything is in the Library. So, in iTunes all your tracks are in the Library and if you make playlist, the tracks are referenced from the Library.
In iphoto, all the pics are in the Library. Photos is a view of the Library. (Events is also a view: think of it as two windows into the same room)
Mke an Album. Drag a photo from the Library to the Album. The photo remains in the Library, the album references the photo from the Library. So the same photo can be in 100 albums - and use no extra disk space. Just like the same song can be in 100 playlists.
So, no you don't cut and paste, just drag the pic from the Library to the album on the left, that's all.

  • Help with understanding the Home Folder plus User Accounts

    I just got the IMac (replacing an ageing...that is an understatement...Grape iMac from long ago) and this is my first go at the OSX. My previous iMac had OS9.2
    I am having a problem understanding the Home folder and the Users to a point. The concepts are fine, it is the changing of names that is the problem. When I first started the iMac and went through the set-up and finally looked at the file structure, there was the Home Folder with a name, which i guess was pre-entered during set-up since I did not enter it (lets call it JOE). There was also 1 User, JOE with all the iLife folders. Since I did not like the name, i went to the Systems Preferences, into Accounts and found that JOE is an Admin. So, I changed the name to, lets say BILL, who still is an Admin. I also changed some settings and made BILL the auto log account. OK so far I am happy. I go back to the HD and find that now there are 2 users (folders), BILL and JOE, and that the Home Folder is still named JOE butall the iLife files are now under BILL.
    So I went and also renamed the Home Folder to BILL, so everything looks fine. But when I restarted the iMac latter it lost all the settings (mouse, etc.) This is really getting confusing.
    Here is what I want to do (after some reasearch):
    I want to change the Short Name (JOE) but so far I have read that you can not do that. Where did this name come from (basically my first initial and my last name) because I don't want my Home Folder to be named that. I found somewhere that the only way to do that is an Erase and Install. I am willing to do that since I have a backup of all the iLife files on an external disk anyways and I have not put anything new yet.
    Can someone enlighten me as to what would be the best course of action....this Short Name thing is frustrating.
    iMac 20" 2.33MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome To Discussions kapklo!
    First you need to sort out the extra Home folder issue, that was created by changing the Short Names.
    The info in one or more of the articles linked to below, will help you with that.
    Return to Default Desktop, Apparent "Loss" of Home Directory
    My home folder and desktop are different than before
    Recover from renaming your Home folder, authored by Dr Smoke
    Then you can change the Short Name using this Change Short Name The Easy Way.
    Or you could do an Erase & Install, making sure you enter your preferred Short Name, during the setup process.

  • Help with understanding the show power-injector comand

    I have been battling a connectivity issue between my point to point 1300 bridges. The install is new and the distance between them is about 1881’. There is no LOS problem. I wasn’t sure if it was a power issue ie. the bridge not getting enough power so I issued the show power-injector command. What I find interesting is the difference between up interfaces. The near side bridge shows interface 4 up, were the far side bridge shows interface 4 down. I have read in the documentation, that interface 2-6 should be down, but why is the near side interface 4 up? Would this be causing my connection to be dropping? Are there any major areas of configuration I should be focusing on? The output drops on both radios are high and continue to increment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    Actually port on the power injector switch are in auto-duplex and auto-speed mode
    you need to ensure external devices which you connected to power injector switch ports are not hardcoded in full-duplex, they needed to be in auto-duplex mode.
    because in result of duplex mismatch you connection could be slow down and even ports may shutdown.
    and also check both bridge with the latest firmware release
    Cisco Aironet equipment operates best when you load all components with the latest version of the software.
    You can download the latest software and drivers from the Wireless Downloads Page ( registered customers only) .

    The problem I see is wrong url for jDriver.
    you have to say: jdbc:weblogic:oracle
    In properties what you need is:
    user=
    password=
    server=
    Actually, your connetion pool is not created yet. It has problems. Make sure you create connectionpool successfully
    first.
    Thanks,
    Mitesh

    I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
    I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
    If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
    Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

    Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
    Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
    Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
    For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
    Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
    The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
    Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
    The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
    Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
    When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
    These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
    So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
    So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • I need help in understanding the customization of Landscape in R/3.

    I need help in understanding the customization of Landscape in R/3. Setup of SAP Landscape from an SAP SD point of view. Being as SAP SD consultant what would be my role in customizing the Landscape server. Help needed. Thx

    Hi,
    In a standard SAP project implementation, the 3 standard transport procedures are:
    Development System (DEV) --> QA System (QAS) --> Production System (PRD)
    In the above structure, the Training Client (TRN) could be made from the copy of PRD (after when real-time master data has been available) or from QA system (where configuration has been tested in DEV client, and the master data is uploaded manually for training purposes)
    Sandbox (standalone): This can be refreshed with Golden Client to reflect the latest configuration performed to facilitate the development/testing purposes.
    -Development (DEV): Where all system configurations and development activities are carried out.
    -Quality Assurance (QAS): Where functional testing is carried out. The System Integration Testing (carried out by the -Development Team) and the User Acceptance Testing (carried out by XXX appointed personnel) is carried out in this server.
    -Training (TRN): End Users are trained on this server.
    -Production (PRD): After the System is commissioned all data entry and administrative functions will be carried out in this server.
    This is by far the standard landscape architecture that is adopted and practiced in most implementations.
    Hope the above helps.
    Thanks.

  • Can you help me understand the use of the word POSITION in TR and CFM?

    Hi,
    I am trying to have a view of typical BI reports in TR and TM/CFM so through my research I came to the following link:.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/62/08193c38f98e1ce10000000a11405a/frameset.htm
    My problem on this link and other postings on this site seem to be the same. Can you help me understand the use of the word POSITIONS in these context:
    1. Our client has asked for financial transaction reports in BW, such as position of Borrowings, Investments and Hedge Operations (TM data).
    2. I have a requirement on, some reports related to Money Market (Fixed Term Deposits, Deposits at Notice) something on FSCM-Treasury and Risk Manager. These reports will be similar to that of Loans, i.e. Position statement, flow statement, etc.
    3. The set of position values for a single position or a limited amount of positions can be reported by transactions TPM12 and TPM13 in R3.
    4. 0CFM_C10 (Financial Positions Cube)
    Do you have some simple report outputs to help clarify how the word POSITION is used in such environments?
    Thanks
    Edited by: AmandaBaah on Feb 15, 2010 4:39 PM

    If I future buy 10 shares in company at £1 per share - at the end of the day my potential value is £10
    The next day the shares drop tp £0.9 per share - I have a negative position - my shares are only worth £9
    I haven;t bought them yet - but I have a negative position - ie if things stayed as they are - I am going to realise (ie end up with)  a loss
    Now you can use this for loans and foreign exchange banks as well...

  • Need help for understanding the behaviour of these 2 queries....

    Hi,
    I need your help for understanding the behaviour of following two queries.
    The requirement is to repeat the values of the column in a table random no of times.
    Eg. A table xyz is like -
    create table xyz as
    select 'A' || rownum my_col
    from all_objects
    where rownum < 6;
    my_col
    A1
    A2
    A3
    A4
    A5
    I want to repeat each of these values (A1, A2,...A5) multiple times - randomly decide. I have written the following query..
    with x as (select my_col, trunc(dbms_random.value(1,6)) repeat from xyz),
    y as (select level lvl from dual connect by level < 6)
    select my_col, lvl
    from x, y
    where lvl <= repeat
    order by my_col, lvl
    It gives output like
    my_col lvl
    A1     1
    A1     3
    A1     5
    A2     1
    A2     3
    A2     5
    A3     1
    A3     3
    A3     5
    A4     1
    A4     3
    A4     5
    A5     1
    A5     3
    A5     5
    Here in the output, I am not getting rows like
    A1     2
    A1     4
    A2     2
    A2     4
    Also, it has generated the same set of records for all the values (A1, A2,...,A5).
    Now, if I store the randomly-decided value in the table like ---
    create table xyz as
    select 'A' || rownum my_col, trunc(dbms_random.value(1,6)) repeat
    from all_objects
    where rownum < 6;
    my_col repeat
    A1     4
    A2     1
    A3     5
    A4     2
    A5     2
    And then run the query,
    with x as (select my_col, repeat from xyz),
    y as (select level lvl from dual connect by level < 6)
    select my_col, lvl
    from x, y
    where lvl <= repeat
    order by my_col, lvl
    I will get the output, exactly what I want ---
    my_col ....lvl
    A1     1
    A1     2
    A1     3
    A1     4
    A2     1
    A3     1
    A3     2
    A3     3
    A3     4
    A3     5
    A4     1
    A4     2
    A5     1
    A5     2
    Why the first approach do not generate such output?
    How can I get such a result without storing the repeat values?

    If I've understood your requirement, the below will achieve it:
    SQL> create table test(test varchar2(10));
    Table created.
    SQL> insert into test values('&test');
    Enter value for test: bob
    old   1: insert into test values('&test')
    new   1: insert into test values('bob')
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into test values('&test');
    Enter value for test: terry
    old   1: insert into test values('&test')
    new   1: insert into test values('terry')
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into test values('&test');
    Enter value for test: steve
    old   1: insert into test values('&test')
    new   1: insert into test values('steve')
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into test values('&test');
    Enter value for test: roger
    old   1: insert into test values('&test')
    new   1: insert into test values('roger')
    1 row created.
    SQL> commit;
    Commit complete.
    SQL> select lpad(test,(ceil(dbms_random.value*10))*length(test),test) from test;
    LPAD(TEST,(CEIL(DBMS_RANDOM.VALUE*10))*LENGTH(TEST),TEST)
    bobbobbobbobbobbobbobbobbobbob
    terryterry
    stevestevesteve
    rogerrogerrogerrogerrogerrogerrogerrogerrogerYou can alter the value of 10 in the SQL if you want the potential for a higher number of names.

    So, let's manually pattern match that...

                                           ^
                                           |
                                          hereand there is nothing there matching the pattern you are looking for because it only has the

  • Help with understanding initial admin account vs. directory admin

    Hello,
    I am hoping someone can help me understand the initial admin account created when I was first configuring my server, and the directory admin.
    I have setup an advanced server, and when I was going through the initial setup I created an account that for this discussion I'll call "admin." Once the initial setup was finished I started using Workgroup manager to create accounts. I was informed that I should create a different directory admin so I did and for this discussion we'll call that account "diradmin."
    I am curious why the initial account of admin does not show up in workgroup manager, and why it does not show up as an option in Server Admin to assign permissions.
    Is this making any sense?
    Any explanation is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Scott

    Hi
    Presumably you used the Server Setup Assistant to configure Services prior to bringing the Server online?
    Not a good idea really. When choosing Advanced after the Server Software has been installed don't enable/configure any service apart from Remote Desktop. Once the Server setup is complete run all available updates. Once you've done that begin to configure required Services using Server Admin. Once you've done that begin to populate your directory nodes with users using WorkGroup Manager.
    The key to understanding the two accounts (a) System Administrator (admin UID 501) and (b) Directory Administrator (diradmin UID 100) is understanding which directory node you want to provide services to. The 'Local' node and the server in general (putting aside the super user 'root') will always be admin. Once you promote the Server from Standalone to OD Master you effectively create another Directory in addition to the Local one. This LDAP Directory can be used for all sorts of things. Principally enabling directory and contact information (amongst other things) to be shared/accessed with users that exist in that node with an enhanced authentication system (Kerberos) not available in the Local node and if the Server is in a Standalone Role. This LDAP Directory is controlled by diradmin. You won't be able to use admin for the LDAP node but you can use diradmin for the server in general - although I would not advise it. You can use root for both nodes - again I would not advise it unless absolutely necessary. Basically use admin to log into the Server and do the day to day stuff and use diradmin for the LDAP. Get into the habit of never having both applications open unless you are going to use them. Once you are done, quit out of them and leave them alone.
    To toggle between the two Directory nodes launch Workgroup Manager and click on the small blue globe below the main set of icons at the top and above the Users/Groups/Machines tabs. You should see at least 4 selections: Local, /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1, Search Policy and Other. If you don't see /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 select Other and browse for it. If you still don't see it then you effectively don't have an OD Master. This will severely limit the ability of server to provide auot-mounting networked home folders as well as access to iCal Server's features amongst other things.
    Finally if you truly want LDAP and everything that goes with it then your DNS Service - wherever its placed - has to be correctly conigured and tested. This link is for a post that explains how to achieve this simply using the interface:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1251475&tstart=45
    Depending on your network environment it might not be appropriate for you? However stick with it as it is a long post and you may find it useful?

      Are you scanning as jpeg, tiff or some other format?
    Are you using continuous numbering for files names as by definition scanned files have no exif data.
