Help with wired/wireless solution

Ok.. I just purchased a G5 2.7 .. my old Mac is an iMac G4 1.25.
Both computer are in the same room, and I need both to have internet access.
Based on what I've read in the forums, it would be better to have a wired internet connection for speed, but I have an Airport Card and Airport Express I can use.
I would like to have have the G5 wired, as this would be my main computer, and perhaps use the Airport Card and Express for the iMac.
I don't know if this is a good solution, or if there is an easier way to have both computers with internet access. I don't know how to use both the wired and wireless combo as my DSL box only has one Ethernet connection.
I'd rather not have to spend more money on a router, being I just purchased the Airport Card/Express. Speed and security is the most important issue, especially for the new G5. I won't be using the iMac that often, so speed is not a big issue for it.
Any thoughts, comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that I'm not a techie in anyway.. so any help in simple terms would be great

Glad to hear it is working for you.
The reason you may not be seeing any bandwidth difference may be due to what you are measuring. If you are measuring bandwidth of your DSL connection, that is how fast each computer can upload and download to the Internet, you shouldn't see any difference. This is because your internet connection speed is relatively slow (probably somewhere between 340 kbps and 3 mbps), compared to the available bandwidth of a wired Ethernet connection (can be 100 or 1000 Mbps) or wireless ( 54 mbps). With those kind of numbers, you should see no difference in testing bandwidth of your Internet connection from either computer.
Where you would see a difference is if you were measuring how fast your computers could transfer a file between each other. If they were connected by wired Ethernet, the larger available bandwidth of the connection would make file transfer much faster then the speed seen if they were connected via wireless.
Just a note. All the figures I used for Ethernet and Wireless are theoretical maximums, and currently no equipment will actually reach those speeds, but they are easier to use to illustrate a point then trying to adjust the numbers for overhead and performance issues.

  • Need Help on Cisco Wireless Solution!

    Hello Netpros!
I have some issues that probably most of wireless implementers faced after implementing a wireless solution. This is an actual feedback from the customer and These issues can be broken down to the following:
    1. The wireless Network is slow! (wireless performance)
The customer has Airtight in placed and airtight reports that users are mostly connected to the wireless network on 2 mbps speed. Users also says that their network experience using wireless are slow compared to wired network.
My question is what reports or guides that cisco wireless cotroller system or WLC can shows that proves the network is working as it is intended. Any guides on how to improve the user experience? Any guide from Cisco IT?
During these slowness, what reports from WCS or WLC that can best shows the problems and helps us implementers to mitigate the problem?
    2. Baseline Wireless Performance.
When asked about a baseline performance of wireless network, what reports from the WCS or WLC that can show this and what is the acceptable or baseline values?
    3. Is there a general guideline on how to use WCS or WLC reporting tools to troubleshoot a wireless performance issue? What reports to see? and how to translate that to say to the customer that the wireless network is under performing?
The main reasons i am asking these questions is because i cannot find any useful documents in cisco that guides the wireless implementers on how to use the reports generated by WCS or WLC when it concerns the performance of the wireless.
Most of the reports WCS generate that relates to the performance normally rounds up the AP performance, channel, noise, but how to translate that to user concerns is another matter.
Perhaps these issues are partly due to user expectations or maybe the wireless setup need to be tweaked or even might requires a spectrum analyzer to pinpoint interferences.
In either cases, I hope netpros can help direct me to good documentation albeit from cisco or other sources that can best outline wireless performance reporting using cisco wcs and wlc.
    Background information:
The wireless network setup has one WCS, one location appliance, 4 WLCs and around 150 to 200 APs, most running Local and some running HREAP. Most of the issues concerns the local type APs.
    Thanking all in advance!
    maldin

    Yup,
thats what we told the customer and even showed them the wlc/wcs reports.
Unfortunately, these customers are lacking in wireless knowledge and they want a streamlined, documented steps to generate the reports and also to help them understand in laymen terms.
At the moment we are formulating a holistic approach to the customer to get them understand wireless first, get them to have a policy and enforce and then drill down to management, reporting and troubleshooting.
The thing is, the wireless is always working fine, but sometimes so it happens some bigshots unable to connect to the wireless network in meeting rooms or somewhere and the become jumpy and pointing fingers.
So the IT manager wants to reduces the finger pointing by having the WLC/WCS to produce reports to them.

  • Airport Express Problem with Wired/Wireless networks simultaneously

    Hello,
I'm having trouble maintaining a connection with my AX (2012) in a work environment.  Basically, I have a Win 7 laptop connected via ethernet to the internet/corporate net.  I have configured the AX to create a separate wifi network that does not connect to the internet. In order to connect to the AX, I have to disable both the Ethernet adapter and the WLAN adapter, enable the WLAN adapter, connect it to the AX's network, and wait for it to show up in the utility.  Only then can I re-enable the ethernet adapter for internet access.  Then, inevitably, the connection dies within 15 minutes and I have to repeat the whole process.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here?  Is the wired network interfering with the wireless network?  Is something configured wrong?  Below is the output from ipconfig/all, if that helps.  The AX is configured with a 169.254 range. IP address and behaves the same way whether the IP address is auto or manual, and there is no difference if the signal roams channels or is fixed to a single channel (I've played with them all).
Thanks in advance for your help.

Here goes - read this through completely and see if it makes sense:
    1.  Reset the Express to factory settings by unplugging it and plugging it back in while holding in the reset button - release the button when the light starts blinking - then wait for the light to blink slowly indicating factory default.
    2.  Disable the wireless and enable the ethernet on the laptop and connect an ethernet cable to the WAN port (the circle of dots) of the Express and use the AU toset it up in bridge mode to create a wireless network with a name of your choice - you don't really need a password but you can assign one if you wish - if you do not use a password you will have to choose to ignore the error message for no security.
    3.  Accept all other defaults and ignore any messages about not having an internet or ethernet connection and update or finish the setup - if you get a blinking amber light, open the AU and correct any error messages.
    4. You can now disconnect the ethernet cable and disable the ethernet on the laptop and enable the wireless so you can stream iTunes to the Express - the laptop must stay wireless to do this - you can not accesss both at the same time - you can also use an iPhone or iPad or iPod to use Airplay and then you can use the laptop via ethernet for the internet.
    5.  To access the Express from now on, you have to use the AU wirelessly from the laptop.
The above is assuming that you don't currently have wireless in your office - the other alternatives are:
    1.  To hardwire the Express and have it create a wireless network and access the internet - you could then use your laptop wirelessly or wired to connect to the Express and use Airplay and your pc at the same time.
    2.  If your office has wireless, you can set up the Express to "join" the existing network - you can then do the same as in number 1.
I hope this helps - everyone's situation is different - the above scenarios work for me - you might have to do some tweaks but the info is there - let me know if you have any questions.

  • Help with my wireless network

On Friday it asked me for my password to my wireless network at my house, so I put it in. Then it said unable to join. I think I got the password wrong. Now when it asks me if I want to join it doesn't ask me for my password it just says unable to join. I can't talk on the phone and go online at the same time anymore. Can someone help with me this so I am able to put in my password for this? Thanks!

  • Urgent help with WRT110 Wireless connection

i have got this wireless router a few months ago.  since i have gotten it, i have only used hard wired to my desktop.  I got a laptop recently, running Vista. I am trying to setup using the wireless with WPA2 personal security.  However, i am not supposed get it to connect.  It told me unidentified network, and it's not going through to the global earth icon under "Network and Sharing Center".
Now, i have searched solution on google, this is not my first experience setting up wireless, i used to have a WRT54G wireless and it works fine.
Now i have tried all these procedure below:
    1) Open the setup page of the router and Under the Wireless tab,Click on Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 50,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Also reduce the MTU to 1400 and click on save settings..Now,check.
    2) On all Vista and Win 7 computers, disable IPv6 under the LAN properties for the adapters.
It still doesn't work.  Can anybody here help me with this issue? thanks alot

Maybe this will help you but what I do with my adapters when installing is disabling my internet connection, firewall, virus and almost everything. I also turn the internet off then I instal the software. You can try that.cheapest voipcheapest voip callsOSU Beaversfree voip phone calls

  • Help with T41 wireless driver for Win7

Hi, I have several Tseries (T40, T41, and T43) and I am migrating them to Win7. The T40 went fine, which has a Cisco wireless adapter. I am having trouble with my T41 model 2374-7FG MARG6.
Can you please direct me to the correct driver?
Can you please tell me which adapter I have? The matrix shows it can be three different types and I have tries all drivers, I think.
    Thank you,
    Rick

    Rick, welcome to the forum,
you should have the Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter. According to the driver matrice site The Vista driver was available through Windows Update, have you tried running Win. Update to see if it finds it for you?
    Hope this helps

I recently got a Dell, and an wireless printer with it.  The set-up seems pretty straight forward, but I get to the point where on my printer's screen, it gives me a PIN number I am supposed to enter on the WPS page.  Problem is, I can't find anywhere on the WPS page where I can enter this number... is there an easy way to simply add another device?

How could we know if *your* machine has a hardware switch? Think about it.
Anyway, while a ipw3945 problem was reported for 3.4-rc1, it's possible that backporting stuff to 3.3.1 broke that version too. So try this patch: http://marc.info/?l=linux-wireless&m=13 … 427374&w=2
Kernel 3.4-rc2 has this patch already applied, so you could also try that. Yert another possibility is using wireless-compat.

  • Help with the wireless, please.

I am not having a problem with the iPod's wireless, because it seems to work fine at my friend's house on his unprotected wireless.
The problem is my secured, with a WEP key, internet.
It worked for a little while, but after a month it decided to not work. It connects when the network isn't secured, so I know it's an issue with the WEP key. I want to change my security to a WPA key, and I use an Actiontec GT701-WG Wireless router/gateway. I went to change the security to WPA, but it asks for a whole slew of things I don't know. As anybody ever setup a network with this type of router, and if yes, please tel me how to setup a WPA key!
Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh, and just in case this information is useful, my iPod can connect to the network, password and SSID are accepted. The little "wi-fi" icon appears at the top with a full signal.

If it was working then it's something simple. Simple things are usually the hardest to trouble shoot.
Just to begin turn everything off. computer, router, cable modem, everything. relax, take a break and then turn the internet modem on first, then the computer or router, then the computer. I'm hoping your online by then if not...
Then there is something other than simple but fixable.
So I'm thinking... virus software up to date?

  • Help with a wireless bridge

How do I get the airport extreme to broadcast to a U.S Robotics model 5430 wireless g bridge? I want to hook up the bridge to my directv box for on demand. THANKS!!!

It is possible that your US Robotics wireless bridge is having difficulty connecting to the AEBSn when the AEBSn is operating in the 802.11n radio mode. Again the default mode for the AEBSn is 802.11n (b/g-compatible). Since you are not running wireless encryption that issue would be a mute one. I was just checking because the bridge only supports the WEP standard for encryption.
I suggest that you reconfigure your AEBS for 802.11g only or 802.11b/g compatible radio mode to see if the bridge will connect to it now. Note: In order to access these non-"n" modes, you need to hold down the <Option> (Mac) or <Control> (PC) key before making the radio mode selection in the AirPort Utility.

Im on my basic setup page but i dont know how to configure it to work. if there is a step by step instuction page for this that would be great

You need to configure the router first as per the ISP settings.
Open the set up page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer Browser and type the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin and click on ok.On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone""... Click on enable>>>Click Clone & click save settings ...Check WAN Ip on Status page of router .... If getting Valid Ip .... try going online...If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the WAN Ip address ..... and try to go Online.

  • Server goes out of memory when annotating TIFF File. Help with Tiled Images

I am new to JAI and have a problem with the system going out of memory
    Objective:
1)Load up a TIFF file (each approx 5- 8 MB when compressed with CCITT.6 compression)
2)Annotate image (consider it as a simple drawString with the Graphics2D object of the RenderedImage)
3)Send it to the servlet outputStream
    Problem:
Server goes out of memory when 5 threads try to access it concurrently
    Runtime conditions:
    VM param set to -Xmx1024m
    Observation
Writing the files takes a lot of time when compared to reading the files
    Some more information
1)I need to do the annotating at a pre-defined specific positions on the images(ex: in the first quadrant, or may be in the second quadrant).
2)I know that using the TiledImage class its possible to load up a portion of the image and process it.
    Things I need help with:
I do not know how to send the whole file back to servlet output stream after annotating a tile of the image.
If write the tiled image back to a file, or to the outputstream, it gives me only the portion of the tile I read in and watermarked, not the whole image file
I have attached the code I use when I load up the whole image
Could somebody please help with the TiledImage solution?

U are right, SGA is too large for my server.
I guess oracle set SGA automaticlly while i choose default installion , but ,why SGA would be so big? Is oracle not smart enough ?Default database configuration is going to reserve 40% of physical memory for SGA for an instance, which you as a user can always change. I don't see anything wrong with that to say Oracle is not smart.
If i don't disincrease SGA, but increase max-shm-memory, would it work? This needs support from the CPU architecture (32 bit or 64 bit) and the kernel as well. Read more about the huge pages.
