Help with wireless connection between 2 macs.

I have an iMac and BookPro, both intel. They are both connected wirelessly to a 1TB Time Capsule.
I want to transfer files between the 2 computers so I have done the following steps:
1. Enabled file sharing on both computers.
2. Checked the AFP box option on both computers.
3. Made sure that users can Read/Write on both computers.
Now, I can see the icons for both computers in the sidebars, but only my BookPro allows me to actually connect to my iMac when I click the iMac icon in the sidebar.
When I click the BookPro icon in the iMac sidebar, the connection fails.
What am i doing wrong?
I have already tried deleting the com.apple.NetworkUtility.plist file, and rebooting.

The there is no password needed when clicking the sidebar icon. It connects as a regular user.
However, when pressing the "connect as" button, it never asks for a password. The connection fails.

I have a Intel iMac downstairs and a G4 power pc iMac upstairs. The downstairs iMac has an internet connection, upstairs does not. What do i need to have a wireless connection between the two and how do i go about connecting the two computers?

    Hi widge-
What you need will depend on which Macs are already wireless and which you will have to add.
There is a lot more information available here: AirPort + Time Capsule

  • Problems with wireless connection between new macbook and older imac

I have just bought a 2.0 ghz macbook core2duo and am unable to connect to my wireless internet network at home. My wireless connection is set up through the airport card in my 17" flat panel imac (i.e. I am using the imac as the internet base station). I had an old clam shell macbook (which just died hence the new macbook) and still have a 400 mhz graphite SE iMac which both connec(ed) to the network perfectly for years. But the new macbook will not connect. It will connect when connected via ethernet. The imac uses Tiger.
I have tried resetting the name of the network, using encryption and not using encryption, but nothing helps. The macbook appears to see the network (although no bars register in the airport connection icon) but I always get an error message when trying to connect.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I am not actually using a router as I am using the airport card (non express i believe) in my iMac to send the wireless signal. My modem is Motorola but not sure which model. I have Comcast cable internet service

  • Help with wireless connection

    Hi all,
I bought a Power Mac G4 AGP graphics in a yard sale for my kids. It works great but I don't know how to connect it to the internet. It has a 400Mhz processor and 896 SDRAM. The operating system is OSX 10.4.11.
I have another computer (PC Sony) on the second floor with a Linksys 2.4 Ghz router for a wireless network at home. I use a laptop and Ipod touch with this network and it works well.
The question is: What type of card or device I need to buy to connect it to my home wireless network. I have been reading about "Air Ports" but its pretty confusing and I don't want to buy the wrong thing. Also, since it's an old computer, I don't know if the configuration will affect the speed of navigation (I have a Verizon DSL line at home).
    Thanks for any advise.
    Felipe

Hi Felipe and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Well what japanamac and motsteve are talking about are PCI adapters for the faster 802.11g Airport Extreme cards.
This is the more conventional solution:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/M7600LLE/
If you open up your G4 with the door facing you it mounts the bracket you see in the upper left front. Like most of these it goes in upside down, thru the bracket and plugs into the socket you see there. The antenna is usually stored in that area also.
    Here's the Apple site:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58536
That adapter in #5 is for a G3 iMac and doesn't have anything to do with that we're about here.

  • Can't establish wireless connection between the printer and computer.

I recently upgraded my wireless to an Apple AirPort Time Capsule. I'm able to set up the printer via USB cable. And I'm able to set up the printer on the network via the Airport WPA utility. However I cannot establish a wireless connection between the computer and the printer. When I go to the printers window  in my system prefereces, there is no wireless printer available to add in the "available printers" menu. Only the USB version printer is listed and of course when I disconnect the USB cable it shows as offline.I've tried all the fixes on HP's support pages. I've tried reinstalling the printer on both the router and the computer numerous times. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall the printer using the "Install Wizard" software that is supposed to come with the printer - (mine never came with it in the first place and of course HP doesn't have it available for download). And when I reset the printer to factory settings, then connect it to the computer via the USB, there is no installation software that pops up. Cant even find the **bleep** thing in "Finder". (I'm assuming that it should show up as some sort of external device.) I've checked to make sure both computer and printer are on the same network. (sometimes my computer will grab a connection with the next nearest network.) I've checked all the settings for the printer via the HTML configuration utility. I've even updated my Macbook software and restarted it multiple times. Note: the printer actually worked for a bit when I first switched routers, but the printer's wireless function went offline several times and then quit  altogether. Really frustrated that I bought another HP product thinking this time things would be different. HP is no help unless you want to pay $$ for a phone call. I'm about ready to take this thing out in the desert to use for target practice and never buy another HP product ever again.

Hi , I saw your post regarding the problems you are having with your LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer not showing on your Macintosh computer. I may have found some resources for you.
I have a few questions for you, so I can offer some additional assistance:Before you upgraded to the Apple AirPort Time Capsule, was the printer working wirelessly without any issues?
When you say; 'I reset the printer to factory settings', how where you trying to do this?
I found some instructions from this post: How do I reset my Laserjet p1102w to its defaults, copied here for you:
To restore the printer back to factory settings, turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and the cancel button (x button) then turn the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise. (When they say turn the printer off, I think they mean unplug the power cable.)
"I've checked to make sure both computer and printer are on the same network."  Do you know if you are able to access the printers Embedded Web Server (EWS)?To access the EWS - Make sure that the Ready light () is on and that the printer is idle and silent.Press and hold the Cancel button (), and release it when the Ready light () begins blinking. The configuration page prints.Type the IP address or host name of the product in the address field of a supported Web browser, and then press Enter on your keyboardLet me know if this page loads
To answer a few more items you have listed:... When I go to the printers window in my system preferences, there is no wireless printer available to add in the "available printers" menu. This could be an issue with your print system, I recommend resetting the printing system and then Repair Disk Permissions - after that try to add the printer again.
... the "Install Wizard" software that is supposed to come with the printer - (mine never came with it in the first place and of course HP doesn't have it available for download)HP provides their software/drivers to Apple to be released through your Apple software updates. You can review this document on how to Install a Mac Printer Driver Using Apple Software Update. Which leads into your next point...
... there is no installation software that pops upWhen you connect the USB cable your mac may still recognize the printer software as being already installed - check for apple updatesOn the Mac, click the Apple menu (), and then click Software Update, or click About this Mac, and then click Software Update. A list of available updates displays.
... Not seeing the printer in "Finder" From what I understand most printers will not show in Finder unless you install a memory card into a supported port on certain printer models, only then will it read it like an external device. A few more things you can check are that the new settings in the Apple AirPort Time Capsule are setup to allow the printer to communicate. There are several of these settings listed in this document; Tips and Workarounds for Common Wireless Network Printer Issues.  HP regularly releases firmware updates that may also correct the problem you are experiencing. You can click on this link to Getting Printer Updates for HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer.  I did find 2 more documents that may offer some additional information as well;HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer - Connecting the Printer After Changing Your Wireless NetworkAn 'Unable to Find Printer' Error Displays for the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer  Please let me know if any of these steps resolved your issue, or the details of what happened.  I look forward to hearing from you, hopefully with good news!   Thanks,

  • Wireless connection between 2 buildings

My office is in a small separate structure on my residential property about 100 feet away from my 2 story house (both buildings are mostly wood frame, a lot of windows).
In the office is my computer system – internet access and a simple network:
    Cable Modem
    Linksys 2.4 GHz Wireless-B Router
    2 PC's with Wireless-B
    Mac Pro
Everything works excellent inside the office building (using wireless for the network and wired for the internet).
I just purchased a MacBook Pro for the house to access the internet and my files on my PC in the office. I tested it with the Linksys and just barely picked up some signal but mostly nothing.
I tried a Netgear WNDR3300 - their latest dual-band, with 5.0 N and 2.4 G. A very nice unit, worked out of the box, but no real additional signal strength.
I was thinking about trying 2 AirPort Extremes, one in the office building and one in the house.
What is someone’s best suggestion on how to create a solid wireless connection between 2 buildings (about 100 feet apart), not necessarily Apple equipment, and short of running an Ethernet cable between the 2 buildings.
I would like full wireless and wired access inside the office, and full wireless and wired access inside the house.

Do you have direct line-of-sight between the two buildings?

  • Applying AirPort-/Wireless connectivity to older Macs

If you ask yourself how to make older machines able to connect to WiFi-Networks there is a quite simple solution, sparing you to mess with internal cards, usb-adapters and other stuff that costs a lot of money and does not really result in fast connections.
surprisingly, the most simple and most effective way to add wireless connectivity to older macs is to buy an airport express station. Configure it as an extension to an existing network and connect it via ethernet cable to the "old" computer. i costs less than any internal card, you have a much faster connection and you don't need to mess with 3rd party drivers. I tried this on old G4 and G5 Macs and it worked brilliant.
i hope this is helpful to you

This will work with non-Airport capable G3 iMacs too

  • New problem with wireless connection since 27th No...

Main desktop computer (windows xp) is connected directly to the internet via ethernet cable to BTHub3. No problem exists with this  connection.
We have previously had no problem connecting Tablet, laptop, and internet radio via wireless connection to our Hub. Problems now exist with wireless connection to all of these devices:-
    - When attempting to use any of the devices wirelessly, we are unable to obtain a connection to our Network (shown on the list of those available) - indicates -  "out of range" or "obtaining IP address" or "authenticating" or "network disabled - poor connection"
    - On occasions, the devices DO show that they are connected wirelessly but are unable to access the internet or use any programmes requiring an internet connection. Messages indicate - "no internet connection" or "connection timed out - retry" or "cannot access this webpage", even when we are in the same room as, and only a few feet away from the Hub.
    - One anomaly has occurred in that the internet radio did connect and function normally on 2 occasions recently , for a duration of a couple of hours, before loosing the connection. However, during this time, the other devices still refused to connect.
Measures we have undertaken to try to resolve the problem are :-
    - We have visited the "Wireless troubleshooting" part of the BT Helpdesk on several occasions, but had already tried the measures suggested here, including changing channels and hub reset.
    - We have spoken at length to the BT tech. helpline who have been unable to resolve the problem.
    - We have emailed BT Help and received a reply from India suggesting all the things that we have already tried (ie. a "stock answer").
    - We are not confident enough to access the Hub Manager as we feel feel this is beyond our capability.
We would be most grateful if someone could help us.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Wingman2, the first thing I would do is uninstall BTDesktop Help if you have it installed. It can cause more problems than it solves.
I would also suggest that the first thing to try is a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds.
After you have done a reset if you still have problems, download, install and run inSSider. It will show you the wireless channels and which one your Homehub is on. You want to find the channel with the least congestion, ie. least number of users. Once you have that you need to change your homehub onto that channel.
See link for insider. Use the free version.
    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
See link how to change channel on homehub
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094
After that if you are still having problems you could try setting the home hub to b/g only instead of b/g/n. If one of your devices is not "n" capable it could help.

I HAVE A LENOVO DESKTOP WITH WIRELESS ROUTER FOR INTERNET.
BOTH ACTIONS CONTINUOUSLY FAILED AT 100% OF THE TIME!!!
I HARDWIRED MY HP PRINTER ... AND ALL PROBLEMS WERE RESOLVED!!!
YESTERDAY, I TRIED TO HARDWIRE MY ROUTER FOR THE INTERNET ... I PLUGGED IT INTO, THE 1 AND ONLY SPOT, ON MY LENOVO, YET THERE WERE MULTIPLE (4-5) SPOTS ON MY COX ROUTER!!!
SO ... I STILL CONTINUE TO GET "DIAGNOSE CONNECTION PROBLEM ERRORS"!!!
HOW DO I SEE THAT THE CONNECTION IS HARDWIRED, AND WILL NOT FAIL EVER AGAIN!!!
    THANKS,
    ALLEN GUIDRY

    Don't shout...
    Anyway,
Setup your wireless network like this
    Router:
    SSID: MYLAN
    WPA/PSK: password
Connect PC to Wireless network using above credentals or plug it into the wired LAN
Connect HP Printer to wireless network
Uninstall whatever HP software you installed
Download new HP drivers/application from support.hp.com enter your model number in the search box to get the driver specific for your printer
Run the program you downloaded from HP and follow the instructions exactlly
Somewhere in the installer it will ask you if your printer is USB or Network (wired/wireless) select network.
hit next a lot of times, and with any luck it should work. If not, call a local computer repair company.

  • E3200 - Dropping wireless connection on the Mac

Pros: Gig Eth switch, no front-facing indicator lights, familiar web interface...
Cons: WiFi Protected Setup doesn't belong. Continually drops wireless connections to my Mac Book Pro (but none of my other devices), which worked just fine on the E3000 this unit replaced and works perfectly on other WiFi networks. REALLY SLOW web interface - average time to move from one page to the next is something north of 9 seconds. Again, never a problem with the E3000 that this unit replaced. Price? I wouldn't complain about price if this thing actually worked as expected.
Other Thoughts: I'm hoping it's just a flaky/defective unit and not indicative of the overall quality of newer Linksys products. Firmware isn't the issue - it's running the latest one from Linksys' site.

First of all please verify that you have got a 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers (i.e. E3200) speaks an entirely different language with 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E3200, but they are not optimized to provide good performance. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G.
Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
Any G devices in your wireless network will tend to hamper the performance of your overall network.
Ensure that your router is running the latest firmware from homesupport.cisco.com The new firmware includes performance enhancements and fixes.
The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.

What does the notebook PC need?
Im very new to MAC, I have looked through the discussion, but Im not sure if people's situation is the same as mine. Any help is much appreciated!

If the Mac Mini is connected to the cable moderm
provided by the ISP through the router above. Can the
Mac Mini share internet with the notebook PC?
The router in effect shares the internet connection to the Mac and the PC, neither computer needs to share the connection as they are clients connected to the router.
    If so...
What does the Mac Mini need?
The Mac mini comes with an ethernet port which allows it to be connected to the router.
The new models now come with built in wireless so could connect to your wireless router wirelessly instead of by cable.
What does the notebook PC need?
If the Notebook PC comes with integrated wireless then nothing else is needed. If it doesn't then it will need a wifi certified 802.11g wireless card.
