Help with wireless internet connection

Hi all,
Excuse me if I'm asking a repeated question, as being abit IT challenged, I just don't know where to look for a correct answer.
I've just gotten a new Powerbook G4 that came with the Airport Extreme, and also a wireless router.
Following the instruction that came with the router, I hooked up my ADSL modem to the router, and I tried to configure the wireless network.
As instructed, I was able to log onto the website provided by the router and ran the wizard to start the configuration process.
However, when all these are done, I couldn't log on to anyother website anymore, with Safari telling me that there's no internet connection.
From my desktop, I could see that Airport is on, and could locate the 'Default' network, plus other network within the neighbourhood. My service provider is using PPPoE.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what is wrong with my processes, and how I can rectify the problem?
I don't what other information you need in order to help me, but I'll be glad to provide it if asked.
Thanks guys and girls!
Cheers,
Kenny Poh

Hi Kenny,
Firstly, make sure your wireless network name is something unique - the name of your first pet, or a random set of letters - so you can be certain you've connected to the right router.
Secondly, are you connecting wirelessly (ie. not with an ethernet cable) to the "web site" of the router? If you are then that means the wireless part is working OK.
If you use the System Preference application and look in your Network Preferences for your Airport connection and under the TCP/IP tab you should have it set to configure IPv4 using "DHCP".
Depending on the router you bought there should be an option in its configuration to turn on DHCP on your network (this is a different option to the one for using DHCP to connect to your ISP) - make sure it is enabled.
With these set up what does the Network Status pane in Network preferences say for your Airport connection?

Please, help me to set up wireless Internet connection. My router is WRT54GS. I able to get online when computer is wired direct to VPN internet cable.
First, I can’t open password request screen on http://192.168.1.1.
Second, when "Setup wizard" runs step #6 (“Check the router’s status”), the program asks for the password. Default password “admin” is rejected by the program and I can’t install Linksys software. Just in case I already pressed reset switch on the back of the router but to no avail.
Third, I don’t find out my Ethernet Adapter Wireless Network Connection and correct router’s IP address using ipconfig/all command after connecting WRT54GS with my computer. Ethernet adapter: DHCP disabled, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, IP address 10.32.132.193, default gate 10.32.132.1.
Tell me please: what’s the matter?

    hi pensive ,
Seems interesting , first do this -  push the reset button on the back of router .
push it till 30 seconds , unplug the power cable and plug in the power cable back in After completion of 30 seconds.
then try to log into , 192.168.1.1 again . with the password "admin".
    see if it reply?
    Else -
    strt>cmd>ipconfig /all - post the result ?

  • Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: Help?

Time Capsule Degrades Wireless Internet Connection: I am in FL using Brighthouse Cable as my internet provider (15MG down). The internet connection speed is slower than a dial up connection when wirelessly connected to my network to my Time Capsule. When I remove the Time Capsule and replace it with Brighthouses Netgear router the internet speed are normal (fast). Additionally, the internet speed is OK when I first hit a website, but the speed degrades rapidly as I access additional web pages. I no longer use my Time Capsule and therefore are not getting my back-up protection. (NOTE: I tried Verizon Fios and had the same problem.) Can anyone help?

Bought the time capsule in Oct 2013.  I have a Sagemcom 2864 modem from Bell but used through Teksavvy.  The 5 ghz has been flaky until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 I think.  I had a closer look at it and it appears that the wifi is ok.  I was thrown off by the wifi symbol being all animated in the menu bar.  I was able to ping the time capsule via wifi.  All the status lights on the modem looked ok.  Next time it happens, I'll see if I can get some more details.  Do you know if there's anyway to get some logs from the airport utility?

  • Setting up a Wireless Internet Connection on Solaris 10

I am new to the whole Solaris/unix world and I was just wondering how to set up a wireless internet connection with a solaris 10 machine. I have a linksys router hooked up to a cable modem and a linksys receiver hooked up via USB on the solaris machine. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Was the router supplied by the ISP or was it bought separately? Are you able to get online when connecting the Mac directly to the router via an ethernet cable? Either way it's best to check the router settings to ensure they are correct.
I’ve not come across the Zoom routers. Setup should be straight forward though, having gone to their website and downloaded the manual. Do the following:
    1. Plug one end of the RJ-11 cable (included in the box) to the router, the other end to your phone line via the micro-filter.
    2. Plug one end of the ethernet cable (again included in the box) to the appropriate port in the router, the other end to your Mac.
    3. Plug in the power cord and switch on
    4. Fire up your web browser on your Mac (Safari, Camino, Firefox etc)
    5. In the address bar of the web browser type 10.0.0.2 and hit the Return button
    6. A Network Password box will appear. This is to gain access to the router itself. The defaults are, Username = admin, Password = zoomadsl
    7. You’ll now enter the Basic Setup screen. It’s here where you enter the username and password supplied by your ISP. This is NOT your email username/password but your Internet access ones. If you are not sure or don't have them, call your ISP.
    8. Click Save Changes and then click Write Settings to Flash and Reboot. Once the router has reset itself and the Link light comes on and remains steady, you’re online.
    That’s it. Job done
If you still cannot get access it may be worth resetting the router (there should be a small button in the back which requires the use of a pen or pencil to press) re-entering your ISP information as described above and trying again.
Let me know how you get on.

  • Help Please w/Internet Connection

    MACBOOK   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Hi all! Purchased new MB 3 weeks ago. After 3 weeks of major issues connecting to internet via Linksys Router not to mention it messed up my mother's ability to connect to internet, I am beyond frustrated. So frustrated that I am considering returning my MB and buying a HP laptop. I ended up returning the router after Apple tech help told me that many Mac users are not able to connect w/Linksys. Now I have no router and can logon to internet from time to time through a neighbors, but it's not reliable. So today I purchased a Netgear. Have not installed it yet cause mom has been on computer all day working. Is Netgear just a better router? Should I expect the same issues? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just got my macbook last week and I was going insane with the dial up which takes 2years and a day to get to one page to another. If you have the funds this is what I did yesterday to get high speed wireless internet connection.
    1. go to launch2net.com to download demo software for mac.
    2. Call your cell phone company to get internet plan added let them know you want to use phone as modem but don't listen to them if they tell you can't do it. My phone company didn't know Jack.
    3. Bluetooth your cell phone to mac
    4. Try to connect to internet with launch2net. Launch2net will automatically find cell (only if it is right cell phone)
    5. If you get on go ahead and purchase full verison of launch2net about 80 eur dollar aka $116 us dollars but it is soooooo worth it.
I have tmobile service and I already had 2 cell phone numbers. I have Sidekick3 and MDA. Neither worked so I had to go buy Razor phone for $230 w/o upgrade so I don't have to extend service contact. As soon as I charged Razor launch2net was on and poppin. I love it. Now I can surf the web anywhere I want at work, home, in my car, at boring meeting. I love it. It was the best thing. And what make it so bad is the Mac customer service techs don't know swat about their own product.

  • Slow wireless internet connection using airport extreme

My wireless internet connection works but is very slow (<80kbs). The problem seems to be with the airport extreme (brand new, purchased in May 07) because my connection is very fast (>6mbs) when i connect by wire to the airport extreme base station. Signal strength is strong, so i can't figure out the problem. Any ideas?
    imac Mac OS X (10.4)

BK37, I hope you've solved your problem by now. But if not, and for the benefit of others reading this post, let me share what I (finally) discovered when I had virtually the same problem, i.e. 8mbps wired speed, <50kbps wireless speed.
I tried literally <span style="font-style:italic;">every suggestion I could find in the Airport discussions. First, I can assure you that changing the channel can give you incremental speed improvements in some instances, but for radical drops like yours, it's not the answer. Nor is turning off ipv6, or changing to WEP, or turning off Remote Access, or moving the AEBS, or or or or or....
With such a radical drop in speed, it's most likely you have a hardware-related blockage somewhere. In my case it was my wiring configuration. My setup was France Telecom Livebox (ADSL modem / ethernet & 802.11g router) --> Ethernet cable --> Linksys RTP 3100 IP phone adapter / router --> Ethernet cable --> AEBS --> 3 Airport Express set up to extend network and run AirTunes. After eliminating every other possible problem, I narrowed it down to the Linksys router, which for reasons I have yet to figure out was trapping the speed to the AEBS. I ethernet cabled both the Linksys router and the AEBS directly to the Livebox and presto! Back to blazing speed.
Hopefully this info will be helpful to you or some poor soul in the same situation, as I would have loved to have had it myself before I pulled every hair out of my head!

  • Help! No "Internet Connect" application on my iBook??

Hi, I'm new to the forums. I have a Macbook Pro running 10.4.11 and wanted to set up my old iBook, which is still running 10.2.8, for my son. I haven't used it in a long time, but when I did I was able to get online with no problem. Now, I couldn't connect to the internet after trying everything I knew, and in checking I couldn't find the internet connection application on the iBook! Maybe I deleted it somehow? I can't imagine doing that, but anyway...I tried copying the application from my Macbook Pro, but got an error message when I tried to use it on the ibook saying it wasn't compatible, which isn't surprising.
What is my best option here? Is there a way to locate this application on the Mac OS disks I have for 10.2 without having to wipe the old machine clean and start over from scratch replacing the entire OS? Can I download the appropriate internet connect from the Apple support site somewhere?
I'm not much of a techie, but if you use small words I think I can understand whatever you tell me I should try!

Thanks for the help--here's as far as I was able to progress, which still has me unable to access the internet from the iBook:
Using Pacifist, I was only able to find an "internet connect" option on my 10.2 update disk. I installed it. An option named internet connect does now show up. However, when I click on it, it seems to initiate a process to open something (as evidenced by a frantically jumping up and down icon in the dock, I'm sure you know what I mean by that), but then that icon disappears and nothing happens.
Incidentally, I tried sharing my wireless internet connection from my Macbook Pro to the iBook, and although the new connection appeared in my airport dropdown list on the iBook , when I tried repeatedly to connect using the password I had just created, I got an error message saying it was unable to connect to the network. The computers were sitting side-by-side at the time, and the router to the wireless network was literally about 10 feet away, if that. Also, if this means anything at this point, the airport status on the iBook shows no bars at all.
    Sorry to be so difficult!

  • ITunes 8.1 works great but killed wireless internet connection

I installed version 8.1 on both my laptop( PowerBook g4/ OS 10.4.11) and desktop (imac intel / OS 10.5) and after restarting the computer, the wireless internet connection stopped working on both.
I would open Safari and it would be a blank page and and the circle would keep spinning.
So I tried my laptop at a different wireless hotspot and had the same result.
I then tried repairing permissions and I got a list of problems with iTunes/Network Utilities, they repaired and now when I open Safari I get the message that it can not connect to the internet.
I do get an internet connection using ethernet on both.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Did you by any chance also update the firmware on your Apple Airport Extreme (if that's what you have)?
I thought 8.1 killed my connection to my Apple TV, but it was the faulty firmware (see reports elsewhere in these forums).
Now that I have rolled back from 7.4.1 on my Airport I plan to try iTunes again (with white knuckles).

  • IMAC Wireless Internet Connection Problems All Of A Sudden

My Imac is well over a year and a bit old and has been able to connect to my wireless internet connection absolutely fine until the past week and a half. At first the connection wouldn't work and when I would turn my airport on and off and reset the router, it would eventually work, now that is not working at all. My airport status is either showing 'airport is turned on but is not connected to a network' or 'airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet'
I have formatted my imac twice and still no avail and the last format I tried to join wirelessly straight from boot but it wouldn't join saying 'there is a problem with the wireless connection and you're not connected to the internet.' the annoying thing is I can see the network sitting there and can't join it, my network is also unsecure so no need to input a password. All my home PC's and my Iphone and Blackberry find the network easily enough, although recently the Iphone has began showing only 1 bar of wifi connection.
I am at my wits end as I am unable to connect at all now, I am all out of ideas and have been bashing my head off a wall for the past day without any connection at all.
My router is a buffalo AirStation wireless G high power model, my IMAC is an intel core 2 duo 20", if you need anymore information of my hardware I will gladly provide it. I'm running MAC OSX Leopard 10.5, out the box as I've been unable to run any software updates as I can't connect to the internet.
Please, if anyone can shed any light at all on this issue I would definately try anything.
    Thanks in advance and regards.

Anytime you see a self-assigned IP address in your network prefs you know it surely is a problem
with your router configuration. Power down all equip ... make sure modem is off for at least 5 minutes
restart modem, restart iMac ... check your network pref on iMac and make sure it's not 169.x.x.x
If so you will need to recapture the settings from your ISP's modem to the Buffalo.
Always use a secure wireless connection (WEP, WPA, WPA2) or else the whole neighborhood will suck down your bandwidth the slow down what your paying for. I use Time Capsules or AEBS (Airport Extreme Base Stations) that allow you to stealth mode and lower signal output and make the device
as a "closed network" ... meaning no one else can see and tap into your WIFI home network!
802.11N is better than G. and especially when you can use dual bands 2.4 / 5GHz to stop various home interferences. The backup of Time Machine only makes life much easier also! Xtech

Do you mean to say you already have a wireless network setup and thought by buying the Airport Express you just could use it for wireless music alone?
The Airport Express is chiefly a wireless router first, with the wireless music and printing as extra's.
It can be used for streaming music alone, but I think it needs to talk to network time servers and thus it gets screwed up over time not being on the internet. Also by your using your computers wifi for music streaming, no internet with your other router.
So it's a all Airport Express or back to a stereo mini cable.

I am trying to access facebook and Flickr via the Organizer with elements 11.  I went to preferences and cleared the oline services, when I try to refresh the partner services I am greeted with the error " there is a problem with your internet connection, check your firewall settings" .
Windows 8, updated.  I tried disabling the firewall.  I have also tried making sure permissions are set up to allow all adobe products access through the frewall when it is enabled.   No other network managment services or virus scanners installed.  just default 64bit windows 8.
I am currently left with no partner services; facebook, flicker, picasa, etc....   I could reinstall organizer i guess to get the default services back...

I apologize for the delay.  An update was released shortly after I posted the question that resolved the issue.  Thank you for your assistance though.  As soon as I read your advice I went to my laptop to follow your instructions.  Upon opening photoshop I was prompted with an adobe update message.  After the update the issue was resolved.  Again, sorry for not updating the situation.

  • Can creative cloud be used with intermittent internet connections?

    Hi,
I have a number of clients that like to "work on the ice" if you know what I mean. They ar eall ice fishermen or work in that industry. Can CC be used with intermittent internet connections?
    Thanks,
           Van

    Hi Van,
I copied this from the Creative Cloud FAQ:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html
Do I need ongoing Internet access to use my Adobe® Creative Cloud™ desktop applications?
No. Your Creative Cloud desktop applications (such as Adobe® Photoshop® and Illustrator®) are installed directly on your computer, so you won't need an ongoing Internet connection to use them on a daily basis.
An Internet connection is required the first time you install and license your desktop apps, but you can use the apps in offline mode with a valid software license. The desktop apps will attempt to validate your software licenses every 30 days.
For annual members, you can use the apps for up to 99 days in offline mode. Month-to-month members can use the software for up to 30 days in offline mode.
    Hope that helps,
    -Dave
