Help with Zen Xtra (30) *note: stickied topics did not he

I tried loading the .20.08 software upgrade onto my zen xtra and now it's acting rather strangely. When I turn it on now, it registers a button press because the backlight turns on when I press a button but the buttons don't actually do anything and the scroll wheel doesn't work either. I tried doing rescue mode by turning it off, having it plugged in, holding play, putting the paper clip in the reset hole, and then removing said paper clip, but it will not restart in rescue mode. I really have no idea what is going on, and I've had the player for nearly a year, so the short and useless warrantee is very over. Anyone?

I believe you are not holding it down long enough----- I think in the manual it says to hold it down until rescue mode comes up..... it took a long tome for mine to come up when i did it
If holding it longer doesnt help, thats all i got

  • Help with Zen Xtra not connect

    Hi,
I have read all of the FAQs and posts reguarding this problem and I just can't seem to get this to work. I have a Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40GB mp3 player. I downloaded and installed the playsforsure firmware yesterday so the mp3 player would be compatible with my Xbox 360. I moved all of my songs from the player to the Creative Mediasource PC music library before the install (sadly, I lost all of the music the Zen cam with). Well, after I installed this firmware, and I plug the Zen Xtra into the computer with the USB cable, it doesn't register that it is connected. For example, when I open the Creative Mediasource PC music library it doesnt have the Zen Xtra listed like it used to, so I cannot put any files back onto the mp3 player, also the Nomad explorer has the Zen listed as "not connected" and same with the Zen Xtra Media Explorer. I then downloaded a new playsforsure plugin for Creative media source and the most updated driver. Still noting... I tried going into device manager, it recognizes the portable media device without any problem, so its not the USB or the computer, its that its not connecting with Creative Media Source, Nomad Explorer or Zen Xtra Media Explorer. I clicked the driver, followed all those steps that were listed in one of the posts on this forum and installed the MTP device. It actually connected this time and I started moving my music back onto the player. Well, I accidently "x'ed" out the program and I went to Creative Media Source again but its not registering the device again. I retried instaling the MTP device again and it didn't work this time. I restarted the computer and tried again but I cannot get this Zen connected anymore. I have never, ever had a problem like this before with my Zen until I got this firmware. Please, if anyone knows what I am doing wrong, please help. Thanks.

  • Help with Zen Xtra

I have an old?30GB Zen Xtra NOMAD Jukebox, and I recently tried to update the firmware but accidentally pulled out the USB Cord before it finished updating! Now when I turn it on it's in this "rescue mode" and I can't do anything, and whenever I try to just redo the firmware update it wont recognize it! Does anybody know how I can redo or fix this?

Can the firmware updater software detect your player? If unable to, try running cleanup then a firmware reload if persisted.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB not playing correctly anymore, help!!

Thanks. I keep getting directed to that knowledge base page, but it is not addressing my problem. My computer immediately tells me that the device has "malfunctioned" and the computer does not recognize it. I only have the usb cord that came with the zen, so I don't have another one to try. I love my zen and have staunchly defended it over the years vs. an i-pod. However, this is my 2nd onI've had my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB for over 5+ years. It has worked great, with minimal problems. I had a firmware update issue quite a while back. I'm not sure how to resolve this problem. Here is the situation:
Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB is fully charged and ready to use.
I tried loading a set playlist but it won't load. So I tried another, and it doesn't load. Not sure what to do, I go to the menu. This time I choose an artist/band. The music loads, but it doesn't play. I try again, then it starts to play. So I load a few other artists that way. It seems like I had a issue to work out later. Being away from my computer that was going to have to wait. After some time the Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB started to start N stop diferent songs. A few times it froze while playing a song. Then would unfreeze to play another, then suddenly start playing the previous one. After about 0-5 minutes of this I decided I had enough. So I planned to empty the playlist, and turn it off. It took me atleast three attempts to empty the playlist and turn it off.
Are these problems fixable What are they hardware or software
Would an OS or firmware update fix these problems Is my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB hard dri've going Can I get a replacement Or do I need to buy a new player
Please help me get my player working. I really like this model, I'd hate to have to replace it.
in 5 years. (The first one fried itself, but fortunately was still under warrantly.) Sadly, I, too, am considering moving on. I onlyreceived generic help fromthe Creative SupportTeam (who ultimately told me my zen is "unrepairable" when their one-size-fits-all solutions didn't work).Since there seems to be an overwhelming # of people experiencing similar problems, maybe the time is right to make the change, especially since an iPod classic 60 GB (7th Generation) is quite affordable these days.
    [/B]

Formatting will erase all the files on the player,Cleanup scans the disc & corrects file system errors, broken links (from when you delete things)ect. but does NOT repair bad sectors,Reboot then rebuilds the file system. I'd do the Cleanup>Reboot first to see if that solves the problem.here you will find how to open the player to see what dri've is in there. You can then search Ebay or Google the model number to find another one.

  • Zen Xtra Software not launch

hello - I have been searching the internet for over a month trying to find a solution to my Zen Xtra problem.
About a month ago, I launched the Creative media program to transfer files into my Xtra. The software just shut down. After repeatedly trying to get it to open, it comes back with a message. "Creative Mediasource has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Thats not very helpful. Ive uninstalled the original driver I got with the Zen - I reinstalled the software - and downloaded drivers from the Creative site. Nothing works. My player works fine - but I cant access the files to add/delete.
Is it all over for my Zen.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Vic B.

    TBeatles67,
Go to the website and download the following updates.
. Drivers - Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03 (.3 MB)
    2. MediaSource update - Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2 (52.2 MB)
    3. Nomad Plugin - Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.20 for Creative MediaSource (9.72 MB)
If you intend to update the firmware, just go for the version .xx.xx update that's available on the website. It shouldn't delete the files in the player but like any electronics device, anything can go wrong anytime so I would also suggest backing up your data/audio files in the player first just in case.

  • Hugely disappointed with zen xtra 30

i bought a creative zen xtra 30gb a few days ago, and its possibly the worst consumer electronics product i've ever purchased.
why, why, why does the unit not recognise directory structure? not only does creative force you to use their massi'vely bloated and slow mediasource software, but you cant actually look at any filenames on the unit. why does it function purely on an id3 database? there is no answer for this.
i have approximately a thousand albums organised well into an appropriate directory tree. but this is all useless. why? because a lot of them have missing/inaccurate id3 tags.
the only answer i've been given is to use id3 tagging software to retag all my music. but why on earth am i being forced to jump through hoops to attain even basic functionality from this device? 99% of the software that does this is hugely buggy and terrible regardless.
i didnt even think to check that the unit supported directories. it never crossed my mind that it would lack this obviously critical feature.
that it uses an id3-based database is fine - however, why deos it not also let you use the unit as an external hard dri've? all the iri'vers have this functionality, and im seriously stunned that this mp3 player lacks this.
this is the worst $400 i've ever spent. the software is vile, and i cant even use the player properly due to its nazi restrictions on id3s.
if there was any chance of me returning this for even 2/3rds of the price i paid, id do that without a second thought.
oh, and the headphone jack is losing its sensitivity, and its been approximately two days. thanks creative.

$400? Is that Canadian or Australian? That can't be US dollars?
The Zen Xtra is an older model. Why didn't you choose a Zen Touch or a Zen Sleek?
If you had read reviews about the player before you bought it, then you would have found out how it works. What store wouldn't allow you to get a refund or exchange within a week? In some US stores there is a 5% charge for returning non defecti've open box items. What country is that which allows retailers to sell items without allowing any returns or exchanges? If you are that unhappy with it and can't return it, you could always sell it on ebay.

  • Need help with Zen Micro and Win

    Hi,
I bought a Zen Micro 2 days ago and I can't get it to work with my Win XP machine.
I did what was told in the manual: install the software first then plug the player.
When I plug the player in I get the following message:
    Found New Hardware:
    Zen Micro
According to the manual, it should be detected and the drivers installed automatically.
But it dosen't. Instead I get the Wizard that try to find the drivers and it dosen't find them.
I let the battery get a full charge and I tried again. Same results.
I tried to update the firmware but since the player is not detected that didn't work.
I also tried to get the new MediaSource/Zen driver (ZENM_PCAPP_LB_4_00_8_PDE.exe) but that didn't fix my problem either.
I also tried to install the Creative Zen Micro Driver version .27.02 but it tell me that I can't install it because the user I tried to install it with is not an administrator. But this is not true since there is only one user on this machine and it's the administrator. First software that tell me this.
I'm using XP Home with SP2.
    Thanks for the help.

    SSR wrote:
The reason it won't install is because the drivers aren't installed.
I've seen a very few others with this strange error about administrati've pri'veleges, so I'm wondering if it's a Windows issue here. You could try downloading the drivers from to see if this is any different.
Try creating another administrator account and see if it will install from that, and try searching back (perhaps someone had found a solution). I think there's also a way of running a program with forced pri'veleges, perhaps Google can turn something up on that.
I remember one user needs to change some rights of the registry in order to install the software. It looks like under some cases, the login account does not have sufficient rights to write registry.

  • Help with Zen Micro installat

I bought a Zen Micro and came home extremely excited, having previously owned a Zen Xtra 30GB complimented by an Audigy 2 soundcard. I put in the installation cd; as the drivers for the Micro are being installed, it stops at 99% saying "Jukebox Driver" and an error message. It then says: "Do you wish to continue with installation?" I've tried yes and no. With both answers, my player does not get detected. I've tried uninstalling and installing several times. I went on the support site and downloaded the Driver update. When installing that, the installation stops at 87% and again gives me the same message.
Please someone tell me how to fix this so I can enjoy my Micro.

My Quicktime is completely up to date with all updates. As for downloading the latest drivers, I said I already tried that for Zen Media Explorer. Being I'm on dialup, I really do not have the patience to do the same for Mediasource as it's a 30MB+ file. I also had Mediasource previously from Audigy 2 and my Zen Xtra, so I don't see why that would be the problem.
Apologies, I missed that last sentence.
Aside from ZMME have you download the latest DRIVERS though? i.e. Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03
Please, someone tell me what I should do. The very first time I installed, Windows detected it, but that has nothappened since. I've also tried going in through Add New Hardware in the control panel, but Windows cannot find the drivers on the CD or on the internet. So I'm truly lost in what I'm supposed to do.
The drivers are located in C:\Program Files\Creative\Jukebox 3 Drivers, try pointing the driver update there (or at least check the directory exists and has files in it). Of course if the drivers have not extracted properly this might be your issue.
Also try installing the drivers from Windows Safe Mode.

  • Issues with Zen Xtra (30GB) PlaysForSure firmw

Apologies if this subject has been covered, but I haven't found any coverage of the particular problems I have with the firmware upgrade (2.0.03).
My main beef is to do with the compatibility with the firmware upgrade and Creative MediaSource. Before I installed the firmware upgrade, along with the drivers and necessary software updates, I was extremely happy with the way MediaSource worked with my Zen Xtra. When I wanted to listen to music through my computer (often), I would simply plug in my player, and using MediaSource, I could navigate through my player's library with ease. It meant it wasn't necessary for me to store music on my computer's hard dri've. Now, while it is still possible to listen to the music on my player using MediaSource, the music library window doesn't feature the Artist/Album/Genre windows for easy navigation (Added to this, due to the way I backed my music up when installing the new firmware, my music is all in Artist/Album folders, making it even more of a nuisance to use).
I know it is the firmware making it do this, because with my friend's Zen Xtra which doesn't have the firmware upgrade, the old style navigation still applied. As it does with my PC Music Library (a function I don't use).
Also, the firmware seems to have made my player much slower and less responsi've, and (this may just be paranoia) the shuffle mode seems much less effecti've.
I wish I could just go back to the way things were, but of course, I can't, because for some reason Creative have made it impossible to revert to the previous firmware!
    Can anyone help?

Sounds like an incompatibility with the card, which is surprising as NEC cards are usually no problem. There are various things to try as mentioned in the FAQ post (search on "connection problems") but I think you need to focus on making sure you have the latest drivers for the card, as well as the player itself.

  • Nomad Zen Xtra does not power

I have just recieved my Zen Xtra today. But when I power it on, per the manuals proper instruction, it does not power on. I have also tried to charge the battery with the mp3 player both on & off. When I had it on the "using AC outlet" icon would show. It does seem I need a new battery. But I fear something else, could the charging mechanism be dead? This player is a refurbished product by the way. It works on the AC outlet, I can transfer files to it, and I can successfully connect it to the USB port. the hard dri've sounds fine. It seems I need to buy a new battery right? Where else besides Creative.com can I buy one? Thanks.

    First, read/try the advice here
Failing that, I would suggest buying a replacement battery. Check froogle.com (that link is set to the best deals) for a good price.

I had EXACTLY the same problem.... i had to send the zen xtra back... never found out the exact problem, but in my opinion there was a problem with the usb connection on the unit.
I lost pretty much 50gigs worth of music and files
The player would connect but browsing took forever and transfers always timed out

  • Please help with an error "could not write value key \Software\classes\iTune.wav.....

I have windows 7 with plenty of memory and storage capacity. When accessing iTunes I had an error message to uninstall and reinstall. I have uninstalled but when trying to reinstall I get the error message "could not write value key \software\classes\iTune.wav. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel"  I don't understand what this means, can anyone help please?

For "Could not open key/write value" errors when reinstalling try b noir's user tip:
    "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\
[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows.
The technique can be applied to the branch of the registry mentioned in the error message.

  • Troubles with Zen Xtra 4

I just bought a 40 gig Zen Xtra and when booting it freezes at the EAX title screen...
when i boot it into the recorvery mode everything seems to be fin...but nope, i am unable to successfully complete any of the option listed except reboot...clean up, format, and replace OS, all bring up their window but just sit there forever saying 'formatting...', or 'erasing OS...'
any help here would be great!
It says rescue mode v.3, boot v.2, and Hw v0.0.

As per the FAQ post if rescue mode functions don't work the player is faulty. You need to contact support.
