Help with Zen Xtra

I have an old?30GB Zen Xtra NOMAD Jukebox, and I recently tried to update the firmware but accidentally pulled out the USB Cord before it finished updating! Now when I turn it on it's in this "rescue mode" and I can't do anything, and whenever I try to just redo the firmware update it wont recognize it! Does anybody know how I can redo or fix this?

Can the firmware updater software detect your player? If unable to, try running cleanup then a firmware reload if persisted.

  • Help with Zen Xtra not connect

    Hi,
I have read all of the FAQs and posts reguarding this problem and I just can't seem to get this to work. I have a Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40GB mp3 player. I downloaded and installed the playsforsure firmware yesterday so the mp3 player would be compatible with my Xbox 360. I moved all of my songs from the player to the Creative Mediasource PC music library before the install (sadly, I lost all of the music the Zen cam with). Well, after I installed this firmware, and I plug the Zen Xtra into the computer with the USB cable, it doesn't register that it is connected. For example, when I open the Creative Mediasource PC music library it doesnt have the Zen Xtra listed like it used to, so I cannot put any files back onto the mp3 player, also the Nomad explorer has the Zen listed as "not connected" and same with the Zen Xtra Media Explorer. I then downloaded a new playsforsure plugin for Creative media source and the most updated driver. Still noting... I tried going into device manager, it recognizes the portable media device without any problem, so its not the USB or the computer, its that its not connecting with Creative Media Source, Nomad Explorer or Zen Xtra Media Explorer. I clicked the driver, followed all those steps that were listed in one of the posts on this forum and installed the MTP device. It actually connected this time and I started moving my music back onto the player. Well, I accidently "x'ed" out the program and I went to Creative Media Source again but its not registering the device again. I retried instaling the MTP device again and it didn't work this time. I restarted the computer and tried again but I cannot get this Zen connected anymore. I have never, ever had a problem like this before with my Zen until I got this firmware. Please, if anyone knows what I am doing wrong, please help. Thanks.

  • Help with Zen Xtra (30) *note: stickied topics did not he

I tried loading the .20.08 software upgrade onto my zen xtra and now it's acting rather strangely. When I turn it on now, it registers a button press because the backlight turns on when I press a button but the buttons don't actually do anything and the scroll wheel doesn't work either. I tried doing rescue mode by turning it off, having it plugged in, holding play, putting the paper clip in the reset hole, and then removing said paper clip, but it will not restart in rescue mode. I really have no idea what is going on, and I've had the player for nearly a year, so the short and useless warrantee is very over. Anyone?

  • Issues with Zen Xtra (30GB) PlaysForSure firmw

Apologies if this subject has been covered, but I haven't found any coverage of the particular problems I have with the firmware upgrade (2.0.03).
My main beef is to do with the compatibility with the firmware upgrade and Creative MediaSource. Before I installed the firmware upgrade, along with the drivers and necessary software updates, I was extremely happy with the way MediaSource worked with my Zen Xtra. When I wanted to listen to music through my computer (often), I would simply plug in my player, and using MediaSource, I could navigate through my player's library with ease. It meant it wasn't necessary for me to store music on my computer's hard dri've. Now, while it is still possible to listen to the music on my player using MediaSource, the music library window doesn't feature the Artist/Album/Genre windows for easy navigation (Added to this, due to the way I backed my music up when installing the new firmware, my music is all in Artist/Album folders, making it even more of a nuisance to use).
I know it is the firmware making it do this, because with my friend's Zen Xtra which doesn't have the firmware upgrade, the old style navigation still applied. As it does with my PC Music Library (a function I don't use).
Also, the firmware seems to have made my player much slower and less responsi've, and (this may just be paranoia) the shuffle mode seems much less effecti've.
I wish I could just go back to the way things were, but of course, I can't, because for some reason Creative have made it impossible to revert to the previous firmware!
    Can anyone help?

Sounds like an incompatibility with the card, which is surprising as NEC cards are usually no problem. There are various things to try as mentioned in the FAQ post (search on "connection problems") but I think you need to focus on making sure you have the latest drivers for the card, as well as the player itself.

I had EXACTLY the same problem.... i had to send the zen xtra back... never found out the exact problem, but in my opinion there was a problem with the usb connection on the unit.
I lost pretty much 50gigs worth of music and files
The player would connect but browsing took forever and transfers always timed out

  • Hugely disappointed with zen xtra 30

i bought a creative zen xtra 30gb a few days ago, and its possibly the worst consumer electronics product i've ever purchased.
why, why, why does the unit not recognise directory structure? not only does creative force you to use their massi'vely bloated and slow mediasource software, but you cant actually look at any filenames on the unit. why does it function purely on an id3 database? there is no answer for this.
i have approximately a thousand albums organised well into an appropriate directory tree. but this is all useless. why? because a lot of them have missing/inaccurate id3 tags.
the only answer i've been given is to use id3 tagging software to retag all my music. but why on earth am i being forced to jump through hoops to attain even basic functionality from this device? 99% of the software that does this is hugely buggy and terrible regardless.
i didnt even think to check that the unit supported directories. it never crossed my mind that it would lack this obviously critical feature.
that it uses an id3-based database is fine - however, why deos it not also let you use the unit as an external hard dri've? all the iri'vers have this functionality, and im seriously stunned that this mp3 player lacks this.
this is the worst $400 i've ever spent. the software is vile, and i cant even use the player properly due to its nazi restrictions on id3s.
if there was any chance of me returning this for even 2/3rds of the price i paid, id do that without a second thought.
oh, and the headphone jack is losing its sensitivity, and its been approximately two days. thanks creative.

$400? Is that Canadian or Australian? That can't be US dollars?
The Zen Xtra is an older model. Why didn't you choose a Zen Touch or a Zen Sleek?
If you had read reviews about the player before you bought it, then you would have found out how it works. What store wouldn't allow you to get a refund or exchange within a week? In some US stores there is a 5% charge for returning non defecti've open box items. What country is that which allows retailers to sell items without allowing any returns or exchanges? If you are that unhappy with it and can't return it, you could always sell it on ebay.

  • Help with Zen Micro installat

I bought a Zen Micro and came home extremely excited, having previously owned a Zen Xtra 30GB complimented by an Audigy 2 soundcard. I put in the installation cd; as the drivers for the Micro are being installed, it stops at 99% saying "Jukebox Driver" and an error message. It then says: "Do you wish to continue with installation?" I've tried yes and no. With both answers, my player does not get detected. I've tried uninstalling and installing several times. I went on the support site and downloaded the Driver update. When installing that, the installation stops at 87% and again gives me the same message.
Please someone tell me how to fix this so I can enjoy my Micro.

My Quicktime is completely up to date with all updates. As for downloading the latest drivers, I said I already tried that for Zen Media Explorer. Being I'm on dialup, I really do not have the patience to do the same for Mediasource as it's a 30MB+ file. I also had Mediasource previously from Audigy 2 and my Zen Xtra, so I don't see why that would be the problem.
Apologies, I missed that last sentence.
Aside from ZMME have you download the latest DRIVERS though? i.e. Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03
Please, someone tell me what I should do. The very first time I installed, Windows detected it, but that has nothappened since. I've also tried going in through Add New Hardware in the control panel, but Windows cannot find the drivers on the CD or on the internet. So I'm truly lost in what I'm supposed to do.
The drivers are located in C:\Program Files\Creative\Jukebox 3 Drivers, try pointing the driver update there (or at least check the directory exists and has files in it). Of course if the drivers have not extracted properly this might be your issue.
Also try installing the drivers from Windows Safe Mode.

For example, right now, the buyer would go to the web and
find something they would like to order, they click on the order

Since we are doing wholesale and would like to capture all traffice

  • Need help with Zen Micro and Win

    Hi,
I bought a Zen Micro 2 days ago and I can't get it to work with my Win XP machine.
I did what was told in the manual: install the software first then plug the player.
When I plug the player in I get the following message:
    Found New Hardware:
    Zen Micro
According to the manual, it should be detected and the drivers installed automatically.
But it dosen't. Instead I get the Wizard that try to find the drivers and it dosen't find them.
I let the battery get a full charge and I tried again. Same results.
I tried to update the firmware but since the player is not detected that didn't work.
I also tried to get the new MediaSource/Zen driver (ZENM_PCAPP_LB_4_00_8_PDE.exe) but that didn't fix my problem either.
I also tried to install the Creative Zen Micro Driver version .27.02 but it tell me that I can't install it because the user I tried to install it with is not an administrator. But this is not true since there is only one user on this machine and it's the administrator. First software that tell me this.
I'm using XP Home with SP2.
    Thanks for the help.

    SSR wrote:
The reason it won't install is because the drivers aren't installed.
I've seen a very few others with this strange error about administrati've pri'veleges, so I'm wondering if it's a Windows issue here. You could try downloading the drivers from to see if this is any different.
Try creating another administrator account and see if it will install from that, and try searching back (perhaps someone had found a solution). I think there's also a way of running a program with forced pri'veleges, perhaps Google can turn something up on that.
I remember one user needs to change some rights of the registry in order to install the software. It looks like under some cases, the login account does not have sufficient rights to write registry.

  • Help With Zen Vision:M 30G, lost alot of music, "rebuilding" progress bar doesnt fin

I purchased my Zen Vision:M 30GB player about 5 months ago and its been great untill today I turned it on and it froze, so i hit the reset button.
Heres the thingI reset it and that "Rebuilding" progress bar poped up like it has in the past when i hit reset? But this time the progress bar only got about? /6th of the way full, before the unit returned to its normal menu, and i went to look at my music and about 90% of it is gone! Ive done a restart in the past and the rebuilding progress bar would have to fill up all the way before it would go to the normal menu and i had no problems with it then, just today it started doing the thing where it would only go /6th the way. Heres the weird stuff,I went to look at the system information to look how much memory was left and based on the numbers, my 90% of missing music should still be on there somewhere. I tried connecting it to my computer and all the sudden now my computer decides to recognize it but The Creative Media Explorer will say its not connected, that is a first for me too?I tried doing that system recovery thing, where i did the scan disk but that did not help at all. Everytime i try to re-boot or re-start it does that thing where the "Rebuilding" progress bar only goes /6th of the way before it goes back to the normal menu, i think that has somthing to do with it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated?Message Edited by Lowalkoroc on 03-7-20070:20 PM

After a reformat, a reboot, and a reload of all my songs everything is working again. Thank the Lord and the Creative forums.

  • Need Help with Zen Sl

Hey, my Zen sleek 20G is messed up. It's stuck in recovery mode and everytime i try to do something it says, "Harddisk Problem." Can u guys help me out please?

Hello! What ever happened with this post? I am having the exact same problem. My device manager does not list the player (although the computer recognizes it as a Zen Sleek when I first connect it), I have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers, the player is charged, and my USB ports are both working. However, the drivers that I had to install for it say Jukebox instead of Sleek? I can't find one specifically that's labeled as Sleek so now the computer recognizes my player as a Jukebox player... could this be the problem? Please help! I would love to be able to use the Zen Sleek Media Explorer program again! Thanks!

  • HELP! RECOVERY MODE IS NOT HELPING WITH ZEN MI

Hello all. I JUST got a Zen Micro, believing that it was a dependable and user friendly machine. However, I've been proven wrong. Initially, it refused to charge fully only leaving me with a few hours of play. Then, it wouldn't turn on AT ALL!!! I tried Recovery Mode's various options Disk Clean Up, Format, etc...NOTHING WORKS! Not only do these options take hours to perform, my Micro still won't turn on! I've already returned one faulty machine to Circuit City, and don't want to go back again. I have mistreated the thing- I love it, lavish tons of money on it, and even brought one of those overly expensi've cases for it! I have already emailed customer support, but feel that I will be music-less for some time. Any advice? Is my warranty still good? Is there an actual human being I can talk to Thanks

I have sent the email, and received a list of common FAQs that don't help much. I have tried researching my problem prior and have yet to find an actual solution!!! Is there ANYTHING else I should do. I have already tried most of the listed advice in terms of Recovery Mode, etc. Problem is that NONE of those options work!

  • Dummy needs help with zen mi

I recently purchased a new laptop with widows vista and I had had xp before. My computer tells me that the driver is not supported or rather that the driver is not found. Know i've been searching around for info and i saw that there are many posts on this subject, however most of the post are way to advance for me to understand.. can anybody please explain to me in Dummy language how to get my zen micro to work with the windows vista pleeease and be patient with me im way to dumb for any big computer talk lol thanks for anyone who might help me.

Hi, the answer may not be as simple as you would like ...
Vista needs the Zen (insert older model) to have its firmware changed to Version 2.x which is referred to as MTP or media transfer protocol. If you do this it is a one way change meaning you cannot go back. That could be good or bad depending on a number of things but for simplicity, let's say you only have a Vista computer. You will need to go to MTP firmware. The catch is that you can only do that under a computer running Windows 2K or XP.
So ... find someone with a 2K or XP computer with an open USB port. Browse to Creative.com's download section adn download the Zen drivers (these install onto the computer so that the computer can recognize the Zen Micro), and download the latest ver 2.x firmware for the Micro. Install the drivers and reboot. Then upon restarting plug in the Micro and let Windows do its thing about finding new hardware. Once that is done and OK, run the firmware installer. During this time, do nothing to the computer or the Zen. If the process interrupts you could end up needing to send the player back for a repair.
Let the firmware install and when completed unplug from that computer and go over to your Vista computer. Plug in and you should be able to manage the Zen from Windows Media Player. Or install Creative Media Source 5 and its plug in modules and you will be up and running.
    Good luck!!
    jake
