HELPDeleted user account with file vault on to free disk space, to no avail

My saga is a long one. Quick telling: I am the administrator on my eMac, and was locked out of my desktop last spring when the disk became overly full. File vault was turned on, and I was told by my computer repair folks that since the desktop was encrypted, it could not be accessed. A sad situation, since I had not backed up the disk, and had years of family photos that were lost, not to mention iTunes, Quicken, and more.
Since then I bought a back-up disk, and saved a copy of that desktop, just in case.
My computer is overly full again, and today I decided to delete my old user account in order to free space. Of the 160G in this computer, 80% was associated with that user (that is, me). I deleted account via the System Preferences window and its Accounts window.
I emptied the trash, and 'got info' on my hard drive, only to see that nothing had disappeared, memory-wise! I am still nearly full--only having 2G available, rather than the 130 or more that I had hoped to free up.m I restarted too.
I went to Apple Support to find that one should turn off File Vault before deleting a user account. Unfortunately, this is impossible for me, since I can not/could not access the user account to turn it off.
SO here is my question: is there a way to delete the files of a user account that had file vault turned on, but that is inaccessible? There is no deleted user file in my User folder, by the way.
I am not suer what to do. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for your insights.
The Tech Tool report happened after AppleJack, and never showed up before that. Restarting again just now, it showed up again.
I had not emptied the trash, but did now, and the 'get info' on my hard drive still shows that I have used nearly all of my 160 GB.
Re Disk Warrior: I do have it and just ran it. I emptied trash again and checked to see available disk space: I have 2.47 GB, so the problem still exists.
Here is the disk warrior report for the first part of its tests:

There is not enough contiguous free space for a fail-safe replacement of the directory. It is highly recommended that
you create 204 MB of contiguous free space before replacing the original directory.

  • Safari unable to download the file.. not enough free disk space?

Very odd! After filling out Apple's Online Rebate Submission Completion Form, I was asked to print it out by clicking on the supplied link, but instead, I got this prompt:
Safari could not download the file because there is not enough free disk space!
Of course, this is totally ludicrous because I just bought this computer and it has a 500 Gb hard drive!
    Any idea what's going on?

Tried using Firefox instead of Safari. The prompt I got in this instance ultimately had to do with changing the permissions on my download folder? Odd.
When I tried to add myself (as the administrator) to the list, the info window crashed. When I clicked on "everyone" and changed permissions to read and write (instead of just read), I was able to download the form as a pdf.

  • Active Directory user passwords on mobile account with File Vault

    Hi all,
I enabled file vault when I moved to my MacBook Pro. I joined the computer to the domain (after enabling file vault), and logged in with my domain account, creating a managed, mobile account so that I could use the computer when not connected to the domain.
Active Directory has forced a change in my password for the domain account but I cannot get the password on the Mac to change the password and sync with the domain.
My account (the one with the changed network password) on the Mac is a standard user account. When I open system preferences, go to Security & Preferences, General, click on the lock to unlock and allow change and then click Change Password  ..., I receive the following error message after going through the steps to change the password:
The password for the account "user" was not changed. There was a problem with your password. It's possible your system administrator doesn't allow you to change your password. Contact your system administrator for help.
For Old Password, I used the old network password, the one that I use to log into the Mac. For New Password, I used my new, current password.
The same result happens when I attempt to change the password from the Users & Groups section of the System Preferences.
I have logged out and logged in with the user account that is identified as the admin and get a similar (same ?) error when attempting to change the password.
Any suggestions? How do I get the passwords to be one so that I can forget the old password?

    Thanks for your insights.

  • Temp file takes up all free disk space

I noticed that my hard drive started losing disk space. There is a tmp file created in /var/tmp that eats up all the hard drive space until a message starts appearing saying no disk space available. The last two times the file was 945.tmp and 400.tmp. A reboot usually deletes the file but it seems that when the AD connection is lost too. Any ideas?

  • Problem with File Vault account after restoring from Time Machine Backup

my old 13" macbook 2.4 running OS X 10.5.4 was recently stolen and I've purchased a refurbished 13" macbook pro 2.66 running OS X 10.6. On booting up for the first time I restored from my Time machine backup (via setup assistant) and opted for migration of all files, applications, user profiles etc.
My main user (with admin privileges) is normally encrypted with File Vault but when I've tried to log in it's coming up with error(3) message. any ideas as to the problem and how to fix?

    Hroodbwai wrote:
I can't find it! not sure what's going on but the only folder shown is the " Shared" folder.
Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):
    |
    |
I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
You should have seen this window on logout:
    |
    |
    followed by this one:
    |
    |
If you didn't see the second one, or cancelled it, the account wasn't backed-up.

  • New iMac 21.5". How can I set up a new user account with access to all the files of the original user account?

Running Mavericks on a 2013 iMac 21.5". I want to set up a second user account with different settings that meet the requirements of specific software. I need the files to be accessible by both users. I have made both the main and secondary accounts administrators. I have also enabled file sharing for both. Neither account can see the other's files in Finder.
How can I make all files accessible to both accounts? I read that administrator accounts automatically can see all files on the computer, but it is not working out that way. I have restarted the computer, to no avail.

Comcast only offers POP accounts, and one way to set up the account and enter all the settings before it connects to the mail server, might be to do it Offline:

  • Problem with file vault

all other desktops/user accounts are unaffected and i have admin permissions on them
i recently upgraded to osx 10.9.4

If you restored the account to which the FileVault protected Home folder belonged, then you need to log into that account and enable FileVault.
If you just need access to the data in the FV protected Home folder, then locate the sparsebundle disc image file that contains the encrypted folder. Double-click on it as if to mount it. You will then need to enter the FV password associated with the account to gain access (this is NOT the admin nor login password.)

  • 2006 iMac running OS10.7.5 with File Vault problem stops boot up?

2006 iMac running OS10.7.5 with File Vault problem stops boot up?  Upon login this message appears: Your home folder, which is protected by File Vault, didn't open. it needs to be repaired.
It then asks:  To repair the folder and continue logging in press OK. To log in as a different user, click Cancel login.
    Clicking Ok
You are unable to log in to the user account "xxxxxxxxxxx" at this time.
Logging in to this account failed because an error occurred.
When I click cancel to log in as different user I get he following message: You are unable to log in to the user account "xxxxxxxxxxx" at this time.
Logging in to this account failed because an error occurred.

This condition is quite difficult and time-consuming to recover from. If the procedure suggested here is too complicated for your experience level, get help from someone more experienced. One option is to make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store. Legacy FileVault should not be used under OS X 10.7 or later.
If you have another user account with administrator status and can do so, log in to it and skip to Step 4.
    Step 1
Boot into Recovery mode. The OS X Utilities screen will appear.
    Step 2
    Select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Select your boot volume if not already selected. Pull down the menu labeled Select the user account and select
    System Administrator (root)
Follow the prompts to set a password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    Step 3
At the login screen, click Other... Enter "root" (without the quotes) in the Name field, and enter the password you set in Step 4 in the Password field. You should now be logged in. Do nothing while logged in as root except as indicated below.
Open the Users & Groups preference pane. Create a new user and check the box marked
Allow user to administer this computer
Restart and log in as the new user.
    Step 4
Load this web page in Safari.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
sudo dscl . -delete users/fubar HomeDirectory
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the TextEdit application. Paste into the window (command-V). Substitute the short name of the FileVault user for the word "fubar".
Triple-click the edited line and again copy to the Clipboard.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window. When prompted, enter the password of the user you're logged in as.
    Step 5
You should now be able to log out and log in as the FileVault user. Your files still won't be available. FileVault is inactive.
Locate the disk image file named "fubar.sparsebundle" or "fubar.sparseimage" at the top level of your home folder. Again, substitute the short user name for "fubar".
    Step 6
Try to open the file. If it won't open, try to repair it in Disk Utility. If it still won't open, restore it from your most recent backup. Keep trying older backups until you find one that works. If you don't have a backup, the data is lost, perhaps beyond any hope of recovery. There's a slight chance that you might be able to repair the disk image using an expensive third-party application called "Disk Warrior."
    Step 7
Copy the files from the mounted disk image to the corresponding subfolders of your home folder. The Library folder is invisible in the Finder. Open it by holding down the option key and selecting
    Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Open the copy on the disk image by selecting
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
    and entering
    /Volumes/fubar/Library
in the text box that opens. Again, substitute the correct name for "fubar".
Log out and log back in.
If there isn't enough disk space available to complete this step, unmount the disk image, copy the disk image file to an external storage device, delete the original, and try again.
    Step 8
Back up all data, then delete the disk image file.
    Step 9
Delete the user you created in Step 3, if applicable.
    Step 10 (optional, but recommended)
Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Disable the root user."

  • Deleted account with files, now want files back

I deleted a user account without changing "Delete the files" to "Keep the files". Now I remember some files I should have kept, that were in c:\users\the_deleted_user\some_folder. Is there a way to recover them? They're too new for the weekly auto backup. I tried to run a few undelete programs

    http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download
    http://glary-undelete.en.softonic.com/
but none can find the C drive or any files. (Or I didn't run them correctly.) I wonder if there's still any chance to get the files back. Thanks.
    Solved!

Thanks. I accepted your reply as solution. But actually it didn't help in my case. I just acknowledge that your advice is the best possible. I have a feeling that Windows7's deletion of an account *with files* deliberately garbles the data that account had to the degree beyond recovery. I used the tool you suggested to recover some of the files successfully. But they're all very old, and were able to be recovered by the auto backup anyway. None of the files created after the weekend were recovered.

  • Creating user accounts with OIDDAS and use them from the OS

    Hi,
I have a customer that is experiencing an error creating user accounts from OIDDAS, and use that user accounts from the operating system.
My customer is using OID/OAS4OS 10.1.4.2.0, and that version is not longer available to download, then, I will try in my own environment

And the question is the following: is supported to create user accounts with OIDDAS and expect that users can work with OAS4OS and be

    Hi Jacco,
I didn't see your post before.
Nop, unfortulately I don't have a document with that. I just received that answer
from development (related to the plugin for AD that is not certified, and DAS is
not intended to work with OAS4OS).
Anyway, about the plugin to work with AD, this is working for me; at least I tested
it by configuring the plugin, I configured synchronization, the mapping file, I did
the bootstrap, and the accounts that were bootstraped now shows the OS attributes
    on DAS.

  • User account missing files and preferences??  Not from renaming home folder

    Hi all,
After some strange behaviour in Apple Color, upon rebooting, my user account has returned to default. I had many items on the desktop and various subfolders in the documents folder. All pictures. Music. All are now gone. Desktop and dock have been reset to default.
The user folder still exists but everything I had in there is gone.
Another user may have been created called "root" containing only
    /Library
    /Documents/Color Documents...etc
I am aware of the problem with changing the short name or renaming the home folder (after sifting through this forum) and it is definitely not this problem.
Maybe its somehow related but I definitely did not rename any of these things myself. And there is no duplicated user account with all my files in it.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Nate
ps. Is it possible to restore the system to an earlier time like in Windows?
I've read somewhere that a Previous System folder exists and it might be possible with Disk Utility but I can't find this folder anywhere.

    Hi there,
Thanks for the reply. I've managed to restore most of my important stuff using a file recovery software so I'm at peace with the loss of only a few files now. I'll just have to start rebuilding my dock and preferences again now which is not the end of the world.
After a bit of thinking about it I'm 95% sure this is what happened.
Color tried to save an image file with the same name as the folder I had made storing all my Color project saves. The folder was called Post. I'm not quite sure how its possible but it managed to overwrite the folder with the new image file. Now there is a Color image file (with no extension) there called Post and no folder.
Then I tried to save the Color project and of course it told me the project directory was missing and it will create a new one. I'm guessing this is when Color bulldozed through my user account to create the folder Color Documents where it DIDN'T save the file anyway
Leaving me with a default user account deleting everything that was 'added' to the account previously.
It also created another user account called 'root' in which there is also only a Color Library/preferences and documents folder
Is that normal that things like that can just happen?
I guess from here I will just try and finish my project and afterwards do a re-install of the OS just to be sure - checking the Archive and Install option this time
Unless you have any other ideas from what I've told you.
    Thanks again for replying
    Nate

    Is ti possible? and How?
    Thanks for your help.

is GREEK just not a supported language
You can see exactly what languages are supported in the OS X tech specs:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
In addition, the Tiger that comes with Intel Macs has Russian.
A Greek add-on is only available via Rainbow and 3rd party patches. One is mentioned here, I don't know if it works right or causes problems.

I disagree. You are doing a major operating system upgrade. That changes all the base OS files, including the file vault files.
I would think it foolish to do that type of upgrade with File Vault enabled.
But we will find out as many will do the upgrade with File Vault enabled and if they have problems they will surely post about it.

  • Can't delete user account with open shopping cart

    Hi all,
Is it okay to delete user account with open shopping cart? I can't delete user by users_gen, it says existing partner document. I then applied notes 1148837,report PARTNER_SET_DELETE. And this report doesn't really work. I ran it and it found zero occurrnences. Is anybody using this report?
So is it the only way to delete user from SRM is by su01 and leave some informations on Busines partner (bp)
    Thanks,
    Kev

Hi. You can easily lock the user and change the validity dates using SU01.
Then, I would write a program that looks through all locked users and checks their valdity dates. Table USR02 holds all this data.
Then, if the user is locked and the validity end date was 3 or 6 or whatever months ago (make this a selection parameter probably), then you know you want to delete this user.
So, go into table HRP1001 where SCLAS = US and SOBID = user name and OTYPE = CP and get field OBJID. This is the central person (CP) number.
Then, go into table HRP1001 again, this time where SCLAS = BP  and OTYPE = CP and OBJID = the CP number and get field SOBID. This is the business partner (BP) number.
Now, run function BAPI_USER_DELETE to delete the SU01 user fully, then function HR_CENTRALPERSON_DELETE to delete the central person, then function BUP_BUPA_DELETE to delete the business partner.
    And that should delete everything.
    Regards,
    Dave.
