Helping Picking a Home Audio System for Christmas Gift!

I'm looking for a home audio system for a user that has a ps3 (so a dvd player is not needed), is HDMI compatible, probably a 5.1 system (?), and if possible to be priced between $200-$300. Anyone have any suggestions?

Unfortunately, you will need to spend more than that or buy a used one.
This is about the cheapest, entry-level HTIB you can probably find http://hometheatermag.com/hometheaterinabox/607onksr800/
I do not work for Best Buy and am not affiliated with them in any way. I like HT and want to help people improve their HT experience. "There is a LOT more than just having a TV to make a home theater"

  • Please help with TV and home theater system for very large basement room....

I'm looking to get my boyfriend either a TV or home theater system for the basement.  I know he eventually wants a 3d TV.  Right now he has a set up where he has 2 tv's so he can play video games and watch sports.
The basement that the tv and home theater system will be in is large (I'd estimate at least 15 ft x 30 ft...maybe more) so I want to make sure the home theater system will be enough for the room.  We live in a ranch so basically the basement is almost the size of the house with some of it being storage.
I've started to look at products online but there are so many and technology isn't really my thing.
If anyone could help with recommendations for the home theater system and/or the tv I'd appreciate it!
    Thanks so so sooo much!!!!

What will he be using the HT system for?  Just watching sports or skipping the movie theater and watching them at home.   If you plan to watch them at home your going to be on a tight budget with the home theater system but it is possible.   Spend good money on the sub, that is one speaker you don't want to skimp out on.  With such a big space you have a lot of room to fill and the cheap subs aren't going to cut it.   You will probably need two subs as it is.  The speakers I recommend on a tight budget Polk or Klipsch.  My list includes a Denon receiver as I am a Denon fan but Yamaha, Onkyo, or Pioneer will suffice.
Here is a Option 1 will run you about 1700 with just one sub. You could always go up a model on each speaker if you feel the one sub is enough.  I like an explosion sounding like it happened in front of me so that is why I mention 2 subs.

  • Help with home audio system

I'm looking to buy a home audio system mainly for listening to music and such in my home especially when i have parties. I was looking at the mtx tp1200 speakers because they are relativly cheap and i think a good quality speaker for the money but im not sure what kind of reciever i need to buy. The speakers are 150watts each so i was thinking maybe one of these two options:

    or

can someone help me out and give me some suggestions as to which would be better or if you know of another system that would be good. Thanks a lot

What devices are you connecting to the receiver? If you're connecting older video sources I would lean toward the Yamaha since it has component & composite video inputs. It also has more digital audio inputs. I can not remember off the top of my head if the Yamaha does HDMI upconversion. I do prefer Denon as a brand. I find them a lot more user friendly. If you're connecting everything via HDMI I would hands down take the Denon.
Honestly if all you're connecting is a pair of speakers and your only source is a CD player the Sony STR-DH100 or Insignia NSR-2001 will do the job. I've installed both receivers for home audio and theyvre done excellent. I actually installed the Insignia for a business not too long ago and it was powering four in-ceiling speakers pretty well.
I'd still lean toward the Denon though if you plan on upgrading to a surround sound.

  • Re: Connection To Home Audio System

I have currently upgraded my phone to the Nokia N80 which i have to admit is so far the best phone i have ever had to date. The problem i am having is trying to figure out how i can connect my phone to my Technics Audio system. It mentions something about the UPnP technology to be able to do this but so far after hours of searching on the internet i still have found nothing on how this can be done. I got all sorts of extra gadgets with my phone like headset, data cable and 2 other things, one of which is a small cable with the coding CA-44 on it and one of which looks like a bluetooth dongle which connects to your phone and has a small black square on the opposite end. Are these anything to do with how i connect to my audio system or can anyone help me with this matter. Thank you.

    Hi,
what you can also do that is less complex is get yourself the Nokia Music pack what you need is the Nokia Audio Adapter AD-15: Simply is Pop-Port to phone, 3.5 mm plug to headphones lets you listen to your phone's FM radio or MP3 player through your own standard stereo headphones, compatible car stereo, or audio amplifier
And ... the Nokia Audio Cable CA-72U: 3.5 mm connector to phone and two RCA connectors to home entertainment system connects your compatible phone to a home stereo system for stereo playback or recording.
Then you are good to go....
Check out the Nokia Music pack on http://www.europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,83227,00.html?s=MusicPack

  • Universal Adapter with Home Audio Systems

I recently purchased the Universal Adapter for my Ipod in order to make it easier to connect and disconnect from my home audio system. Things work fine when the Audio cable is directly connected to the port in the Ipod, When I place the Ipod in the Universal dock and try to use the "line out" in the dock, either no sound or very muffled sound occurs. Anybody have any ideas?

It seems likely that it will .I am expecting it to

  • Is it a solution to use Apple TV and VoiceOver to play my tunes on my home audio system?

hi, i am visually impaired and want to be able to have voice access to browse my music so that i can easily play them on my home system. when i saw that apple tv supports voice over, this idea came to my mind to have an apple tv connected to my home audio system and share my library on my computer to be able to browse it using apple tv with voice over enabled. this way i have access to my music library and via voice. but i couldn't find a good tutorial to approve if my idea is correct or not. please give me feedback to know if my idea is a correct one or essentially it is not a good solution for such problem.
    thanks a lot

    Yes it should work ok.
I don't use it normally but once enabled Voice Over states the current menu position.  If the position has submenus it says 'button'.
For example, I have 2 itunes libraries running currently.
As I scroll across the columns using a right keypress it says something like  Main Menu and:
Movies  (right keypress)   Internet   (right keypress) Computers
On pressing select on Computers the submenu opens showing both shared libraries:
    AlleyCat Mac Mini
    AlleyCat Mac Pro
The Voice Over announces 'Alley Cat Mac Mini,  Button, One of Two'
Button seems to indicate a submenu.
Pressing down key on remote it announces 'Alley Cat Mac Pro, Button, Two of Two'
Selecting either library lists the media content categories:
Music / TV Shows / Podcasts etc (order may be different)
It announces say 'Music, Button, 1 of 6'
Pressing select ('button') opens the Music category.
You then have several subcategories inclusing Shuffle/ Search / Music Videos/ Album Artist/ Album / Genre/ Genius etc etc
I'd personally like Artist at the top but it should be easy to navigate down with a few clicks and you'll soon remember which menu number is your preferred category.
One say is Artist, there's Shuffle or similar at the top then all artists listed alphabetically.
    So I have maybe:
    a-Ha
    ABBA
    ABC
    Academy of Ancient Music
    Alanis Morrisette
    Alisson Krauss
    etc
    etc
As you scroll down it says the artist name pretty well for most and says say ABBA, Button, 3 of 227'
Select takes you to the album/track submeny and process procedes.
The Apple remote is very simple and should work well, though i think the older white one is more tactile than the new silver one.

  • Won't play in home audio system

My wife's 5th generation Nano will not play through my home audio system connected with a monster rca cable at the system end and connects to the ipod through the ipod connector (no sound comes through my system, only sound is from the nano speaker). It works fine in both boom boxes that we have.  My classic ipod 30gb works fine in my home system.
Is there an adaptor that needs to be purchased?

Contact the vendor of your home audio system.  They should be able to tell you the adapters you need.

  • No sound on my home audio system with universal dock

    Hi,
I have 2 docks: the iPod dock and the universal dock.
If I use the dock with my home audio system I have sound - clear and loud.
If I use the universal dock I have no sound.
Does the universal dock only work with a remote?

If the home audio system is the same, the cables are the same, the iPod is the same, and the settings are the same, than I would assume you have a bad dock.

For windows Server 2008 and Server 2012 you may need enable Desktop Experience Feature
The Desktop Experience Feature enables a bunch of stuff that is by default present on a desktop OS. Most importantly it includes Themes, Windows Media player and the Aero related features. You will have to enable it form the Server Manager. The "Turn Windows features on or off" / "Add remove windows components" has all been rolled into the Server Manager now.
Server Manager > Features > Desktop Experience
Installing the Desktop Experience feature does not enable them. You have to manually set them up.
After that Windows Server 2008 == Vista x64
    Windows Server 2008 R2 == Windows 7 x64
    Windows Server 2012 == Window 8 x64
So just use the appropriate desktop drivers - that are available

  • Help with NAS (Network Audio System) setup.

Anyone having any ideas how to set up this? I couldn't find any documentation, no howtos, no help, just an obscure nasd.con.eg in the package.
Has anyone managed to set up a client and a server for this system, it'd be really useful to me...

Idd, seeking is hard and really hacky (:D) to implement with the two process solution. :\ You can use the
    extern-movie.sh 10.0.0.4 movie.mkv 124
to seek where you want in the files, but you'd have to exit the script, then restart the script in the middle of a movie ... :\ Writing a plugin for MPlayer might kinda defeat the simplistic design of rsound. Shouldn't be hard to implement though. I made an rsound client in python in like 5 mins, so shouldn't be too hard.
As for NAS: http://linux.die.net/man/1/nasd this helped a little, but it really looks like legacy software. "When the Network Audio System server starts up, it takes over /dev/audio."
I've been trying to get nas up and running, and it wasn't hard to get it to play some stuff with mplayer, but it feels quite broken using the default config + mplayer. Might be my alsa emulation of course, but mplayer showed hickups, erratic framerate (-autosync 100 helped against this), bad sound quality, and a couple of crashes.
You could try this from the command line. Shouldn't need to set-up any config file yet.
    sudo nasd -aa
And running this in another shell:
    mplayer <movie> -ao nas
Try it locally, not sure how to set up nas to connect to extern servers. :\

  • Home Security System For Mac?

I'm on the market for a home security system I can run through my home computers. I was all set to purchase a nice Logitech system with an outdoor camera and everything else, and noticed it doesn't work with Mac.
I've done a lot of research, but I'm not finding a recommended system for Mac users.
Can anyone make a recommendation or point me in the right direction?
    Thanks.

You might check CNet Downloads or MacUpdate and search for the software. Then you will know what systems should work with Macs such as Thinking Home that works with X-10 devices.

  • Are there any known good home phone systems for the Home Phone Connect

I've had the Home Phone Connect now for several months.  I have had a Panasonic KX-TG7641 for a good while now.  I bought this system to connect a cell phone through the Bluetooth to make a receive calls at home.  This cell phone stayed docked in the charger next to the Panasonic base station.  There were a few extra steps involved in order to make calls using the Bluetooth and every time my mother-in-law visits it is an extensive training process to show her how to use the phone.  Every. Time. She. Makes. A. Call.
I saw the HPC and figured I could simplify the system and since the cell we kept connected was off contract, I got the HPC for free and signed up for 2 years with it. This was a mistake.  While I can always hear the callers on the line, they sometimes report that I am too garbled to understand.  Today I knew I was going to be on the phone on hold for a while, so I used my home phone handset for comfort (vice holding my Galaxy up to my head for an extended period of time)
After a 30 minute on-hold with the Veterans Administration I finally got through to an operator who informed me she could barely hear me/broken and garbled.  Where I have my HPC at it is right in a window and I have steady 2 bars on it always.  I told her I could call back on my cell phone, but she insisted we power through it so I wouldn't have to wait again on hold.  Well we eventually made it through the call.
After hanging up I used my Google powers to see what the issue it/how to fix it.  It appears that the people that have issues when using the HPC also have Panasonic phones/base stations connected to it.       This might be because Panasonic phones are widely available and are the most common ones in use, but it might also be in that something is incompatible between the 2 systems.  Odd, since the way it connects is similar to an old POTS.  Could it have something to do with the DECT 6.0 that hey use (on the 1.9GHz band) where other older devices use standard 2.4 or 5.8?

Thank you for the tip.  Sorry if it's the wrong forum.  I don't post here often.  I searched for the Home Phone Connect under devices and found it under "Other" so figured this was the best place to post it.  Could you point me to the correct place for the HPC discussions?
I'll double check later when I'm home on my computer to see iff the problems being reported are all using the DECT 6.0 (1.9GHz).  Might be causing some interference of some sort.

  • I need help entering ALL of my addresses for Christmas card address labels on my new iMac.  Whats the best way to do this?

Anyone have any tips how to get started with address labels?  I went to my address book, but it looks so time intensive.  Can I mail merge addresses I put into a excell spread sheet to print labels??

Don't waste your time with formatting in any of those programs - creating two pages for cards, blah blah blah.
The best way to mail merge on a mac is using address book.
People think merging got harder, but apple made it easier - more intuitive. You don't merge mailing labels through a word processor - you do it through the program which houses the addresses.  If the addresses aren't in address book yet, that's a snap.
First, go to your program/file with the addresses (pages, numbers, excel, etc.). I think it's easiest to use numbers.
make sure the column headings are set to Mac Address Book Standard Names - that way you won't have to spend too much time mapping them in address book. (if you're not sure what those are - open address book and just a view a card/record, or open pages or numbers and search in the help menu for the term "merge field names" and it will give you a list. They're pretty simple - things like "First Name" "Last Name" "Street Address" etc.
For christmas cards, I add an extra column under the heading "Note" and input "Christmas Card List" for every record.
Once your data is formatted with the correct column names, export the list to a csv file.
Open Address book in mac and import the list - make sure the columns match up with the correct fields.
It might ask if you want to overwrite or update - that's up to you.
If you know your christmas card list has the most recent address info, hit update.
Once the import is done it should take you to the front page for the address book in which you'll be given the choice to view Icloud addresses (if you sync those) and also the Last import. Any groups or smart groups you have will show up in the list too.
Click on Last import - make sure all the addresses and names you just imported are there. If not, something went wrong - go back and check your import field mapping. If all's good, keep rollin'. (it helps to scroll to the bottom of the import list to get the count of imported records)
Here, you can do one of two things - create a group or a smart group.
For a regular group - Highlight all the records on the right panel in your last import, then go to file > new group from selection. Rename your group christmas cards or something like that.
I prefer to create smart groups.
For that, goto file > new smart group. You'll come to a filter window. Click on the first drop down box and scroll to "Note." Then in the second drop down box choose "is" and in the third and final input box on the right, enter the text from the note column you created in the address list file. I used "Christmas Card List".
That will create a smart group, such that any time you enter a new address or contact in the address book with the note field that equals "christmas Card list" it will automatically be entered into this group.
Either way, you're only one step away from labels.
With that Christmas Card List selected in address book, go to print. When the print dialogue box opens, make sure to click on the button for show details toward the bottom left. That will open up your choices for style.
Under "Style" click on mailing labels.
Under "Layout" choose your label layout (i use avery 5160). It will show you a picture of the label and you can tell if it's the right one.  You'll also notice the labels are being merged correctly, with one address per label, rather than one name for the entire page - like if you try to do this through pages.
    Print away.
    Hope that helps.

  • Audio System For Older Minivan

Hi,  I just purchased a 1995 Chevy Astro Van.  The van runs well and I will probably keep it for a couple of years.  I am looking to upgrade the very poor audio system that originally came with the vehicle.  I do not want to spend too much on it.  Definitely new speakers and a radio with a cd player.  How much more for a system that i can use my itouch on?  Any suggestions...  Thanks, Kelly.

    Hi Astro007,
It’s really hard to recommend a specific deck because there are so many options, brands and price points. Best idea is to spend a few minutes at your nearby Best Buy, talk to the car fi associates and install bay guys and get their input directly. Thanks for asking!

  • Warantee Time-limit for Christmas Gifts

I just bought an ENVY 5530 as a Christmas gift (i.e. it will not be used until after Christmas). Will the 1 yr warantee start now or on 12/25/2014?
    This question was solved.

Warranty starts on the date of purchase, regardless of it being a gift" --- how does HP know the date of purchase? From copy of invoice?
HP computers have a "born on" date embedded in the computer and filed in a database. This date plus a month or two plus 12 months is the default end of warranty date. If you wish to change that date, you must provide a copy of the invoice or receipt. Please see "Check your warranty status" for the current end of warranty on the computer.
