Helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H issue

Hi all,
I know this is a question that's been asked, and for some it's been solved. However, after hours of reading forums and trying everything I've read, I still haven't been able to resolve this font problem. I MAY know what the culprit file is, but unfortunately, it is a file I have to constantly open! Here is my issue:
I use Helvetica in my Illustrator template for my freelance job, so now, hundreds of my files have been infected with this "helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H" issue. Whenever I open a file that uses Helvetica, it says that helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H is a missing font and will be substituted.
How can I go about getting rid of this error so that I don't have to fix hundreds of AI files? Also, I've read that people say to disable or remove the MM files, but my computer does not allow me to do this. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
How do I disable/remove them, and will this stop the error from popping up every time I open a file?
I am also having this problem with MYRIAD. (I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I design t-shirts, therefore my files will be sent to printers. For this reason, I must use the default Helvetica, and not a version that the printer may not have). It would be much easier to have a solution that will eliminate the error message from popping up altogether, WITHOUT having to download that "helvetica 83pv-RKSJ-H" font, but I'm not sure if this is possible.
I am using Illustrator CS5 and OSX10.6.7. Thank you.

I outlined fonts that are not default fonts (the fonts used in the actual designs), but not the template, in which I used the default Helvetica. And the reason why I didn't outline the template is because prior to this issue, it was more efficient to not outline since I have multiple revisions to do for files. Often times clients would want their shirt name changed, or the Pantone colors changed, and it was quicker for me to edit the same file rather than saving an outlined and unoutlined file. However, it seems like that's what I'm going to have to do for now until I find a fix.
Yes, I am on an admin account. I'm not even sure what font I'm looking for. I've looked in the systems/library/fonts, user/USID/library/fonts/, and HD/Library/fonts, and have only found it in the systems folder. Again, I am unable to remove it, and if I open FontBook, I can't find the HelveLTMM or Helvetica LT MM fonts to disable. Tips?
(By the way, when I say I am unable to remove it, I mean that I can move it out of the folder and into the Trash, but cannot empty Trash. It says it is in use even though I have no programs open. But even when I move it out of the system's fonts folder, I still get the error.)
(More info [sorry for all the sidenotes]: Files that were created prior to this issue are also corrupted now. When I opened them while the "corrupt" file was open [before I knew which file was the culprit], they got "infected" with the non-existing Helvetica. I'm afraid that since I saved those files without knowing they were infected, my AI will continue to have that issue until all files are resolved, which is why I'm trying to find a way to completely wipe out whatever it is that is causing this so that that error won't pop up anymore, and my files won't look for a Helvetica I don't have, even though I had originally used my own default, working version. Not sure if any of that makes sense...this is all really confusing for me)

  • CS4 Helvetica-83pv-rksj-h*

Is anyone having issues with Helvetica-83pv-rksj-h* in illustrator CS4?
Is this a legacy font that CS4 does not recognize?
What can be done to get this font to load or what is the substitute?

Do not believe I have seen a MM verison of Gotham. Here is a list of the MM fonts incase you have any of those. http://helpx.adobe.com/legacy/kb/multiple-master-fonts-general-information.html
    I would try font nuke:

Here is a screenshot, incase this helps decipher which version of Gotham opentype you have. If you have any type 1 versions of Gotham, and you are having trouble, would susbstitue all opentype equivalents.

  • Revisiting the Helvetica...-83pv-RKSJ-H* font issue

For those of you not familiar with the previous threads on this issue then refer to http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc85cf4/1
I also posted a question in June (here http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5967b/0) but referred to the above at the time.
    PROBLEM:
Now it is back, but it occurs when opening CS2 files in CS3!
The previous solution I had was to Quit Illy. Remove the corresponding file in CMAP folder. Launch Illy again. Open the problem file. Quit Illy. Put it back and relaunch.
Sometimes I had to do a Font Finagle as well. No idea why it worked, but I stumbled on it.
Now that doesn't work, so i went a further step.
I opened the .AI file in Textedit. It shows some very interesting info such as paths to placed files and fonts, etc.
I did a search for Helvetica. Then removed the '83pv-RKSJ-H' from each occurrence and resaved the file (make sure you do a Save As... ;-)
Opening it in Illy seems to solve the problem.
This leads me to conclude that the problem occurs first on a machine for some reason and it added to each file opened. Then noone can get rid of it.
BUT, Why oh Why Adobe does it happen in the first place? Please help us.
    Thanks by the way.

I found a fix by Mike Gondek.
Remove the HelveLTMM and Helvetica LT MM (multiple master fonts in the Macintosh/System/Library/fonts)
We have recenltly also seen the font Helvetica 90 ms-RKSJ-H appearing..... and.... unfortunately this fix does not have the same results.

  • Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H infecting our Illustrator files

I am working in CS3 on OS 10.4.11, but we also use CS2 on some of our Macs with 10.3.9.  We do not use Font Utility programs. We mantain an organized font library and only load our licensed Postscript versions of fonts into our main Library Fonts folder.
We are receiving files with Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H where it should be Helvetica Medium. Such files appear to have Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H in the Illustrator font menu in addition to Helvetica even though the font does not exist in our library.  The only way we have found to rid our files of this font is to replace it with anything but Helvetica Medium, save, quit Illustrator, reopen and then replace with the true Postscript version of Helvetica Medium. If we open a file with the Helvetica 90ms-RKSJ-H and then open an accurate file it will look like it has the wrong Helvetica. If we save, that file while it looks wrong it will become wrong.
Another good description of this problem can be found here: http://adobe.groupbrowser.com/archive/t-171734.html but it is from 2007.
I want to know if there is a better solution from what we are doing.  We either need to instruct our outside vendors on the best solution to rid their files of this issue before it gets to us or correct mass quatities of Illustrator files ourselves.
Please let me know what other info that would be helpful to this discussion. Thanks for any insight and info that can be given!

Glad to see there is a Helvetica RKS-J 90ms thread now. I looked into this a little maybe a year ago and had come across a few threads on other cmap issues like this but not much specifically on RKS-J 90ms.
I believe RKS-J 90ms is a Japanese character map (cmap) that is being referenced rather than it being font in itself. There two places it may be--either  in your Adobe or Acrobat folder. It may be under Adobe>Acrobat>Resources>CMap in Windows. Where I work we review localized art files many of which are Japanese. This problem spreads if we open any untainted files while in a session referencing Helvetica RKS-J 90ms. The sheer quantity of files we go through and number of languages we boot into has made starting a fresh session with Illustrator for each new illustration job or document review impossible. I'm sometimes booted into one language for an entire day, but opening other language localized files in Illustrator (can be done in Illustrator, though not FrameMaker hence the booting into Japanese, etc.). Maybe this is a bad idea.
How do others in this thread come across the Japanese cmap? Do you work with Japanese language files? Someone here suggested we use VMWare to boot into Japanese so that we don't keep spreading the infection.
This may be off topic, but we also save down a lot (my group works in CS4). Its usually to CS(1) which causes problems as CS2 had many new tools/techniques (legacy type problems are pre CS1 though). I've suggested we don't save down below CS2 unless completely necessary to exchange a file. Saving down may not be related, but in threads on similar cmap referencing problems, some people claimed to reduce the problems or get rid of them by not saving down. I don't believe this is a solution, but there are so many other problems that can come with saving down to too low a common denominator.
I really hope this thread continues and we can find a permanent solution.
    Thanks

  • Font with "83pv-RKSJ-H*" will not change

    Hi
I hope someone can help with a really frustrating problem.
We were using Interstate-Regular PostScript Type 1 font for many years when we discovered that quite a few files were displaying the wrong version.
Rather than the CS2 file looking for Interstate Regular it was looking for Interstate-Regular-83pv-RKSJ-H*.
As we use Interstate all the time we switched to OpenType version of family and decided to progressively migrate old files to new version.
However, attempts to update the font in many files does not work. Opening the file and changing "Interstate-Regular-83pv-RKSJ-H*" to the correct font (manually activated in Suitcase) does not work, it just reverts back to the 83pv-RKSJ-H* version.
If I load the font in ~/Library/Fonts and try it then the Regular font just reverts back to 83pv-RKSJ-H*.
Searching the file using TextEdit does not find "83pv-RKSJ-H*" anywhere!!
Any help in this matter would be extremely appreciated.
    Regards
    Craig.

    Craig,

When I open the file photoshop crashes, but i'll try the process of creating an eps file again and see how it goes.

  • Fonts issue on 10g Reports (Linux)

A while back I posted some questions about installing fonts on Linux RHEL 5.
Currently, I'm in process of upgrading Client/Server Forms/Reports from 6i on a Windows platforms to 10g forms/reports on a Linux RHEL5 platform. No database is installed on the server since we are using the TNSNames in the Network Admin to connect to the database.
I have been able to convert all forms and all reports to 10g. I had an issue with the Arial, Arial Narrow, and Courier New fonts not displaying in output when I generated a PDF file via the screen using the WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT command. The fonts were translating. I was able to use Metalink Note 261879.1 and run the scripts to generate the AFM files and copy the TTF fonts to the appropriate directories. When I run the reports in 10g on Linux, those 3 fonts display just fine.
However, I have 3 other fonts (Monotype Sorts, Arial Unicode MS, and one of Barcode fonts) that I need to get working. I've worked with Oracle Support and I'll be honest, the steps they are telling me either aren't very clear or just flat out aren't right.
I've tried on Windows to use the ttf2pt1 program to generate the AFM files and copied those up to guicommon/tk/admin/AFM directory. I've copied the TTF file up to the associated directory. I've modified the uifont.ali directory to include the font, to no success.
Has anyone tried to move a Windows font up to Linux (Unix) and got it to work successfully? If so, could you provide me some steps? I've really been trying to get this to work and would do anything at this point to get it to work. I've got about 5 reports that use these 3 fonts and if I get them working, I'm done.
Please provide good detail, if possible. Oracle Support has just confused me more by providing notes to read and little tidbits here and there but haven't given me something that works in a straightforward manner.
    Chris

    # MS Gothic, MS PGothic and MS UI Gothic. To subset MS PGothic, the
    # entry in the PDF:Subset section of uifont.ali would be:
    # "MS PGothic" = "msgothic.ttc,1"
#MJJ# - Removed old subset mappings.

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
However the file "begriff.sty" is owned by texlive-latexextra

    /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/latex/begriff/begriff.sty is owned by texlive-latexextra 2013.33063-1
Since i was in doubt if it is safe to call pacman with "-f" option, i removed the whole texlive and re-installed it.
But as i run the installation i got warning about missing kpathsea. Now I'm in doubt if i should ignore those warning.
    Any advice is appreciated.

Just now I tried to upgrade my system and texlive-core could not be upgraded as a result conflicts with other packages. My solution, as I've seen this given elsewhere on the forums, is to remove the package you are trying to update. my solution was then to run # pacman -R $(pacman -Qq | grep texlive). This would remove all texlive packages. I first reinstalled texlive-bin and texlive-core, as these two were the ones that got updated today. I then went to re-install the other ones. I am getting the same conflicts as before.

  • Changing font in Oracle Report in PDF output

    Hi,
I have created reports using dev10g(report builder). I can run report from client side in pdf format but I want to change the font (i.e from courier to Arial narrow).
    How can I do this?
Is there anyone who can help me?
    my unifont.ali file is:

    # Styles may be combined; you can use plus ("+") to delimit parts of a
    # style. For example,
    # Arial..Italic+Overstrike = Helvetica.12.Italic.Bold
    # are equivalent, and either one will map any Arial that has both Italic
    # and Overstrike styles to a 12-point, bold, italic Helvetica font.
    # All strings are case-insensitive in mapping. Font faces are likely to
    # be case-sensitive on lookup, depending on the platform and surface, so
    # care should be taken with names used on the right-hand side; but they
    # will be mapped case-insensitively.
    # See your platform documentation for a list of all supported character
    # sets, and available fonts.
    # BUGS:
    # o Should accept a RHS ratio (e.g., "Helv = Arial.2/3").

    # helvetica = "Arial.ttf"
    # The True Type font files must exist in any one of the folders specified in
    # REPORTS_PATH.
    # Subsetting TrueType Collection fonts:
    # Typically, a TTC font contains several fonts in one file. For example,
    # the TTC file, msgothic.ttc consists of three fonts in the order -
    # MS Gothic, MS PGothic and MS UI Gothic. To subset MS PGothic, the
    # entry in the PDF:Subset section of uifont.ali would be:
    # "MS PGothic" = "msgothic.ttc,1"
    # NOTES ON PRECEDENCE OF PDF SECTIONS:
    # If you have entries for a same font in many PDF sections, then Font
    # Aliasing entry will take precedence over Font Subsetting entry. Entries
    # in Font Subsetting will take precedence over the entries in Font Embedding
    # section.
    # Generic entries for a font must follow more specific entries for the same
    # font. For instance, if you want to subset helvetica Plain, helvetica Bold,
    # helvetica Italic and helvetica Bold-Italic fonts, your entries must be:
    # [ PDF:Subset ]
    # helvetica..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
    # helvetica...Bold.. = "Arialb.ttf"
    # helvetica..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
    # helvetica..... = "Arial.ttf"
    # If helvetica..... entry appears in the top of the list, all the styles of
    # helvetica font in the layout will be subset as helvetica Plain font.

  • ARIAL FONT IN REPORTS(WINDOWS), NOT SHOWN CORRECTLY UNDER LINUX

Our Reports are developed under Windows (Report Builder 9.0.4.0.33 and Windows 2000/Windows XP) and generated under Linux (IAS 10.1.2.0.2 with Red Hat Advanced Server). The Report Output is a PDF, that will be downloaded by the user with WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT. This works fine, but fonts are not shown correctly in the PDF, especially ARIAL, which is the font we use.
I have run the Fontsolution Configuration Script from Metalink, but we still have a problem.
When you look at the font.pdf, wich is the testreport from fontsolutions, some sizes and styles of Arial are printed correctly others not.
Arial 8 is ok, but Arial 10 and Arial 12 are something like Times New Roman.
Arial 12 Bolded is correct, but Arial 12 italic and Arial 12 bold italic are also not
    the Arial Font.
How can we correct this problem?
    Regards
    Udo

    # NOTES ON PRECEDENCE OF PDF SECTIONS:
    # If you have entries for a same font in many PDF sections, then Font
    # Aliasing entry will take precedence over Font Embedding entry. Entries
    # in Font Embedding will take precedence over the entries in Font Subsetting
    # section.
    # Generic entries for a font must follow more specific entries for the same
    # font. For instance, if you want to subset helvetica Plain, helvetica Bold,
    # helvetica Italic and helvetica Bold-Italic fonts, your entries must be:
    # [ PDF:Subset ]
    # helvetica..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
    # helvetica...Bold.. = "Arialb.ttf"
    # helvetica..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
    # helvetica..... = "Arial.ttf"
    # If helvetica..... entry appears in the top of the list, all the styles of
    # helvetica font in the layout will be subset as helvetica Plain font.
    uiprint.txt
    # This is the printer configuration file.
    # The format for entries in this file is:
    # <OSName>:<Type>:<Version>:<Long Name>:<Description File>:
    # The first field is the name of the printer. It is the name you give
    # to lpq.
    # The second field is the type of driver to be used for the printer.
    # Currently, "PostScript" and "ASCII" are the only types of driver for
    # printers supported for now. But in future we may be supporting
    # drivers for other printer types.
    # The third field is the version of the type of printer driver. It's 1
    # or 2 for all PostScript printers; or 1 for ASCII printers.
    # The fourth field is a long description of the printer. This will be
    # presented to the user in the "Choose Printer" dialog window.
    # The fifth field is the printer description file to be used. For
    # PostScript printers it is the PPD file of the printer. (This field is
    # currently unused for ASCII printers.)
    # You can use default.ppd for the description file if you don't have a
    # PPD file for the printer, but it's best to use the correct PPD file
    # for the printer.
    # You must fill in at least the first two fields (printer name and
    # type). If the version is empty, it defaults to "1"; if the long name
    # or description are empty, they will default to empty strings. A
    # version of 1 or an empty long name is fine, but, for PostScript
    # printers, you must fill in the description file name.
    # You don't have to update this file to use any printer. The printer
    # chooser interface let's you select a printer and driver at run time,
    # as well as associate a printer description file to the printer. You
    # should list all printers accessible to users here, however, to
    # simplify selecting a printer.
    # The first entry in this file will be used as the default printer, if
    # no printer was selected in the operating system. (For Unix, the
    # following environment variables will be used in turn to get the
    # default printer's name:
    # TK2_PRINTER
    # ORACLE_PRINTER
    # PRINTER
    # For other platforms, see the Installation and User's Guide for your OS
    # for information on setting the default printer.)
    # WARNING: Do not define multiple entries for the same printer by the
    # same name. Selecting a printer with multiple entries will always result
    # in the first entry being selected. Instead, see if your OS allows you
    # to create an alias for the printer, and use an alias for the second type.

If you want to make platform independent use of fonts, you have to use the family, such as sans serif.
Arial is owned by monotype (http://monotype.com/). You have to contact them if you wish to redistribute it with your application. They also might have a suitable version that renders nicely under linux.

Not upgrading until I make at least two backups, repair permissions and discover if all my software has been tested with it. I recommend everyone consider that the experts do this before any update! Updates do not kill systems. Unprepared systems can suddenly malfunction to the point where if there is no backup available, you are up a creak without a paddle. So backup at least twice before applying any update. See my FAQs* for additional precautions:

I'll be updating them with 10.5.3 notes within the next few days.

  • Helvetica Neue - 45 Light - Major Issue

Since upgrading from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.1, one of our corporate fonts Helvetica 45 Light does not work any more! Its really frustrating as it worked ok in 10.5.8.
I work an an in-house graphic designer and have to create deadline-critical print artwork on a daily basis here. The only workaround we can find is having to substitute our corporate font for the Apple System version of Helvetica Neue. As a result, our copy doesn't look the same as the cut of the font is slightly different. We are also experiencing text re-flows too which are annoying and time consuming to correct on a daily basis. To add to this, certain characters like "–" do not export correctly when generating high-resolution print-ready PDF files. We are having to create all type in our artwork to outlines, which adds length to each job! A significant change in our workflow which functioned fine in 10.5.8.
Apple, PLEASE can you fix this font issue as im sure we are not the only people in the world who use one of the most popular fonts ever created in the history of type. I am enjoying Snow Leopard and many of its enhanced features. Just a shame its a massive step backward in terms of font compatibility.
Already trawled the Apple forums on this so any tips would be welcomed, along with a fix from Apple too.

Finally, a workaround. If you have the Adobe Creative Suite installed, drop your fonts in here:
    HD/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/ Fonts
Works fine for me, and our corporate fonts now work inside Illustrator CS4 too. I found it on this really helpful thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2154431&tstart=0
Apple still need to sort this out though.

  • How do I solve my FONT conflict issue with the system Helvetica Neue

Everytime I start up in Leopard I get the error message "There is a conflict with the "HelveticaNeue" font file". How do I resolve this issue? I require the Postscript versions of Helvetica Neue for my design programs. I use Linotype FontExplorer to manage the fonts. Is there a way to rename these postscript versions so they don't conflict?

Currently, the only way is to remove Apple's supplied versions of Helvetica. They have exactly the same internal names as the PostScript versions. Follow the instructions in section 4 of my article, Font Management in OS X, to see how to do that.
The link, or one of the links above directs you to my personal web site. While the information is free, it does ask for a contribution. As such, I am required by Apple's rules for these discussions to include the following disclaimer.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Weird issue with .Helvetica Neue DeskInterface

Yosemite uses ".Helvetica Neue DeskInterface" as the system font. It shouldn't be accessible as a regular font; plain old "Helvetica Neue" is there for that. It should be impossible for me to format text in a document in the system font and yet it since at least December 2014 it has shown up in my list of fonts in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Specifically, it shows up as the following fonts:
    System Font Heavy
    System Font Medium Italic P4
    System Font Medium P4
    System Font Regular
    System Font Thin
    System Font UltraLight
Tipo de letra del sistema Fina
Interestingly, the Bold, Bold Italic, and Italic versions of the system font are not shown. Why the name of the Light version is appearing in Spanish is a total mystery.
So I know something's amiss but can't figure out what. So far, I haven't found any actual problems to be caused by this improper appearance of a system font among regular fonts but it makes me uneasy. I've cleared and rebuilt all font caches but it hasn't made any difference. I created a clean new user account but the behavior appears there as well.
Yesterday I did a clean install of Yosemite (wiped drive, installed OS, migrated settings from clone of HD) for unrelated reasons. Much to my bafflement, the .Helvetica Neue DeskInterface fonts are still showing up in Word and Excel.
Can anyone make any suggestions to help me figure this weird situation out?

The ones with "System Font" as part of their name are indeed part of the font family name of some (but not all) of the 10 fonts in the HelveticaNeueDeskInterface.ttc font package. Why they're showing up is another matter. I also installed Yosemite from scratch on an erased drive. Office 2011 does not show any of these fonts on my system. Which it shouldn't since the file name begins with a period. Are you using Office 2008? That may be the difference for that font. I can't test it right now.
Tipo de letra del sistema Fina appeared with 10.10.2. I was thinking maybe that one of the system fonts has an extra FOND entry which causes it to show up. But none that I can get a resource view of show it. That's where Lucida Grande CE and CY come from. They and the "normal" Lucida Grande are actually all the same font. The CE and CY FOND entries point to the exact same set of glyphs.
I have yet to find where Tipo de letra del sistema Fina is hidden. It is a different font, though. If you type anything in Word and then switch between this font and Helvetica Neue Light, the kerning is slightly different. So while they are very similar, it's not the same font. Basically, just ignore that one. I wouldn't use it in any project.
Do the HelveticaNeueDeskInterface.ttc fonts appear in any other app, or only Office? Word in the only place Tipo de letra del sistema Fina appears for me.

  • Switching to Arch: Outstanding issue w/ printing

I've spent the last six months or so switching to Arch and intel (from OS X/Debian and ppc). I did think I was getting there but I've got stuck on some issues which seem small in some ways but are really problematic given the kind of work I need to do. Part of the problem is that I don't know where to start trying to diagnose or solve them.
I currently have three such issues. One has to do with getting my internal mic to work in usable fashion. The second is to do with the use of external monitors (e.g. for LCD projection). The third is the one which is really, really problematic. When it really matters, I can use one of the university's windows boxes for the mic. And the external monitor is manageable because it works and only causes issues on disconnect. But the third I have no work around for and I'm getting kind of desperate.
Generally speaking, printing works fine. My machine is set up to use a number of different printers: a Dell networked printer on my home LAN, an HP in my office via USB and another HP via USB in another office I work in. Printing is generally fast and good quality.
There are two problems. First, printing periodically gets "stuck" and the only way to get it unstuck is to kill all jobs in the queue, disconnect the printer, switch the printer off and then restart, reconnect and reprint everything. Even this is not impossible. I can get everything printed - it is just a question of figuring out what hasn't printed and remembering to recheck everything each time the printer stalls.
Second, certain documents print so slowly that it is, in practice, impossible to actually print them. I'm not sure what is special about these documents. Usually this happens with PDF files but it is certainly not all PDF files. It affects any which contain graphics but it also affects a lot which do not. Other PDFs print extremely fast.
For example, I am currently trying to print a PDF version of a paper. The job was sent at 18:42:37 BST. It is now 19:16 BST and it has so far managed to print 6 sides (3 pages). I'm printing it from acroread because it refused to print at all from Okular or the command line. This particular PDF is an older JSTOR file and these often seem to be affected. Recent stuff from JSTOR prints fine but older archives do not.
    pdfinfo for the file gives:

    Times-Italic Type 1 no no no 141 0
    Times-Bold Type 1 no no no 6 0
acroread's properties for the document suggests that the non-embedded fonts are being substituted. For example, Arial MT is being used in place of Helvetica and Times New Roman PS MT is being substituted for Times.
Here's the command being run from ps:
    hp-LaserJet-1320-series 410 <username> A9ROojFUrV 1 Duplex=DuplexNoTumble finishings=3 noHPBookletBackCover noHPBookletFilter HPBookletPageOrder=Normal HPBookletPageSize=A4 HPBookletScaling=Proportional HPEconoMode=PrinterDefault HPOption_PaperPolicy=PromptUser HPOption_Tray2 noHPOption_Tray3 noHPStraightPaperPath InputSlot=Auto InstalledMemory=16_31MB noManualFeed media=A4 MediaType=Unspecified number-up=1 PageRegion=A4 PageSize=A4 Resolution=1200dpi sides=two-sided-long-edge Smoothing=PrinterDefault job-uuid=urn:uuid:18b2396b-4dca-38bc-561d-a85b5fc4d85d job-originating-host-name=localhost time-at-creation=1336758157 time-at-processing=1336758157 /var/spool/cups/d00410-001
Any sort of insight or suggestion will be gratefully received and I am more than happy to post further information if somebody tells me what is relevant. I've enabled debugging info in CUPS but I'm not sure what might be of interest and there is a lot of output.
I'm looking for, ideally, a solution which will allow me to just print (preferably solving both problems but at least the second). A second best outcome would be some sort of work around which would allow me to convert these files or something and then print them. (But convert to what?) Failing either of those, I am definitely interested in knowing what I might read, inspect or experiment with.
Given that printing other files works just fine, there must be something about how CUPS is handling files with some particular characteristics, mustn't there? I just have no idea which characteristics of the files are relevant or what it is doing. "I didn't manage to read the/your paper because Linux doesn't like older PDFs" just doesn't sound like a good excuse...

ewaller wrote:@cfr:  Which interface are you using?
Do you mean am I using cups or something else or do you mean to configure the printers or something else?
I usually use the web interface to configure the printers for cups. I'm using the "recommended" HP drivers for the HP printers (and I think I'm using a proprietary ppd for the Dell printer from Dell but I use that printer much less than the others and not for printing these sorts of files).
I see the same problem with an HP LaserJet 1320 and a P3010 series (I think it is a 3015).
I discovered that if I switch to a gutenprint driver things are better for at least some JSTOR files on the 1320 but I still have issues. For some reason, it doesn't then want to print the last page (no matter how many pages there are) and this driver can only print at 600dpi and has fewer options. The printer is waiting for more data but cups thinks everything has been sent successfully. If I resend the last page to the printer, I then get two copies but one prints much later than the other. I assume this is another way in which something to do with the spooling or the way that cups sends data to the printer is going wrong and maybe connected with why printers get "stuck". Aside from the slowness issue there is definitely something not quite right about the communication between computer and printer. It is as though cups has two speeds: super quick (spools so fast the printer can't keep up); and super slow.
I've tried printing problematic PDFs from at least Okular, acroread and using lp on the command line.
I don't understand how the suggestion concerning converting them to png is supposed to work. Do you convert each page to a separate png file? I guess you could script it but it still seems like a convoluted process. (And I assume it rules out double-sided printing.)
