Helvetica Bold Condensed substitution in Safari

I've just noticed that on many sites where I would normally see Helvetica Bold for headlines, etc. Safari is now using some form of Helvetica Bold Condensed instead. I've tried toggling some things in Font Book and trashing my Safari plist, but nothing works.
I've seen some similar posts on this forum about font issues in Safari, but nothing has helped.
This problem is unique to Safari. Camino, Firefox, all render fonts correctly.

Try deleting your fonts caches with FontNuke or OnyX +(or with whatever utility you normally use)+
FontNuke <http://www.jamapi.com/pr/fn/>
OnyX <http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html>
-restart your Mac
-open your Font Book->Edit menu 'Select All' fonts - from the File menu select 'Validate Fonts'
-from the Edit menu select 'Resolve Duplicates'
Good luck,
Tom

  • Helvetica bold displays incorrectly - InD CS5

Depending on the size, Helvetica Bold displays incorrectly in sizes 9 pt and 13 pt.  For instance, the word "Howard" displays correctly when the regular font is used; when bold, the 'w' in Howard looks like it is one point smaller: Howard
Unfortunately that whole document is in 9 pt font so changing the size isn't an option.  What is the cause of this and is there a solution?

Does it still look like that when you zoom in? ...
Your screen has a finite resolution, and details smaller than a single pixel cannot be accurately displayed. If you display very small text on your screen, you are pushing this technology to its limits. In fact, below a certain size, the letter form has to be coaxed and wriggled into shape to be recognizable at all -- this is the "font hinting" you might have heard of. It's necessary because otherwise a small font size would not be readable *at all*.
The downside is, that way you do not see exactly what you get anymore. But that shouldn't be a problem -- you aren't getting what you see anyhow.
In short, it's just some rounding on your screen. If you zoom in, or you print your page on a reasonably high-quality printer, you will see there is nothing wrong with the size.

  • Weird Bold-Font Substitution

Ever since I updated to 10.4.11 this morning, including the brand-new Safari 3.0.4, Safari has appeared to be font-substituting all bold Arial (or Helvetica?) fonts. The substitution almost looks like Arial Black. (Another poster had a similar problem, but not exactly the same.)
I've repaired permissions, trashed the Safari plist, and smashed the Mac OS X font cache, all to no avail. I don't have any Safari haxies.
    What should I do?

I had the same problem since the update, bold fonts would sometimes show up as black, like on Google, all bold fonts would be Arial Black.
I managed to fix it by disabling Arial in Font Book (It turns out I had duplicates in the Arial font family) than restarting Safari and everything was back to normal.
So maybe try looking under All Fonts and open the Arial font and see if you have more than one of each type, try disabling any duplicates and any Arial Black duplicates.
Hope that helps because I know how annoying this problem is.

  • Bold Font issues in Safari

Since installing leopard on my Mac Pro Quad my safari highlight font has changed to a really Black Condensed font like Helvetica Compressed or Inserat, not sure which, and the letterspacing is really tight making it illegible most of the time.
I can’t read most of the headlines etc... on most sites when the text is below 20pt.
Please help cant work out why!!!
It doesn’t do it in Camino etc.. just Safari!

Fixed it now found so older forum fixes.
I completely removed all the fonts from my suitcase which cleared any font conflicts rebooted safari and suitcase and it didn’t fix it. But restarted the Mac and it did so make sure you reboot the machine afterwards!

  • Bold hyperlink fonts in Safari update

After running Safari update, all hyperlink fonts are displayed as bold on pages such as CNN, MSNBC, etc. How do I get the fonts to display as regular (not bold) style? I've reviewed recent posts but don't see any solutions for this problem. Any help is appreciated.

    Hello joey:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I do not have that issue.
Try clearing the Safari cache and running permission repair.

  • Font-weight:bold;  - works in firefox, safari, internet explorer 6 BUT NOT ie7

font-weight bold; on an external css style sheet is working in every browser (INCLUDING ie6) but NOT ie7?
I just don't get it. It even works in ie6.
NOTE:   One thing I should mention is that I have a conditional Internet Explorer statement, for a Internet Explorer-specific style sheet that targets ie6 and ie7.
But I don't think that's the issue because every other style is working properly EXCEPT font-weight:bold. This is absolutely maddening.
I tried searching around for solutions and the only lead i found was writing  [  font-weight:bold !important;  ]  using that '!important' statement I thought would somehow force ie7 to acknowledge it. But no dice. It failed.
    Here is the accursed code:
    #date {
    font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    font-weight:bold !important;   /*   bold not showing up in ie7 !!!  */
    font-size:.85em;   /*  Is font-size affecting bold in ie7 ?? - was 85%  */
    color:#000000;
    text-transform:uppercase;
    margin-bottom:-.75em;
    margin-top:6em;
Again, it works in every browser, including ie6...BUT NOT in IE7.
Any help will keep me from pulling my hair out. Thanks.

So it's still not BOLD in ie7.
    - My css is validated.
    - My HTML still shows 19 errors with 3 warnings, which is down from 31 errors with 3 warnings.
    • Although most of these errors are directly from the 'Active Content' JavaScript that Dreamweaver places within your HTML when you insert Flash SWF files on your page. So I don't think I can even correct that.
    • The next series of errors concern the P element. Which I think are because in 5 Paragraphs in a row, I gave them each the same relationship attribute (rel="lightbox[blog02]"). Why else would these paragraphs come up as errors when every other paragraph is perfectly fine? The errors the validator says are happening, aren't happening. It says that certain P tags aren't closed and it's not true, I can see with my own eyes that they are. I think the 'rel' values are confusing the validator?
All the major errors I took care of though. I replaced all the repeating ID attributes with CLASS attributes. I really thought that would have done it, but no. However, at least I'm no longer getting ID errors when attempting to validate.
    So now I'm stumped.
I have no clue what to do next with something I thought would be so simple. I mean give me a break. I'm just trying to BOLD a line of text...smh.
So currently every browser, including the illicit ie6, shows the BOLD...BUT NOT IE7.
Sorry for the all caps, it's just so ridiculous to me.
Although I learned that validating your styles and sites is an important step in publishing your site. I also learned how to properly use ID and CLASS attributes.
However if anyone out there can point me in the right direction, it would still be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  • SWC: OSX : Helvetica Neue Condensed

I am trying to embed a Helvetica 87 Heavy condensed in my flex file.
I have already embedded Minion pro, so my functionality works.
I ran the function that checks fonts and Minion is the only one that is embedded.
I get a transcode, whether I try to use the local or my url.
I also have a swc, but it contains many files.
Do I need to create swc just for the helvetica font?
    Thank you for your help,
    Emma

Also, if I did create the swc, just for the helvetica font..I have been using a class to pull in the fonts.
Would I need to just embed the font the old fashioned way?

  • Break link to style

I've just had a situation where the font in a masthead has changed.
I am guessing that when the masthead was built, a default paragraph style was in place so that the masthead represented style overrides, and that somehow the overrides have been removed.
To prevent it happening again I have broken the link to the style and I was expecting the type spec to then be bullet proof. But if I select it, although it no longer appears as a selected style in the paragraph panel, I am still able to use the panel to clear overrides, which returns the type to Times New Roman.
I guess the TNR comes from the No Paragraph Style on which the original style was based. But having broken the link, I would not have expected this behaviour.
Breaking the link to a style will obviously protect the type if the original style is edited, but shouldn't it also prevent regression to the base style?
If not, I guess that means that the only way to make a piece of text unchangeable is to edit No Paragraph Style to exactly represent each piece of text before setting it.
    Any thoughts?
    k

    Thanks Dave.
Deck = sub editor oldspeak for a line of headline.
Maybe I'll go the styles folder route.
I'm only assuming that the problem came from removing overrides. The magazine is set mostly in Myriad Pro, but the masthead is three decks of Helvetica Bold condensed at different sizes, leading and tracking to form a square. Some of the words are solid black, others are tinted.
The magazine went to press with the Helvetica substituted by Myriad Pro Regular, but the size, leading and tracking seemed preserved so the headline looked right, just the wrong face. So perhaps removing overrides wasn't the culprit.
This was on an inside page. The cover masthead, thank goodness, was as it should have been, which makes me rule out font substitution.
The designer says she never touched the type at that point, so it's going to remain a mystery.
I'm just trying to prevent accidents in the future.

  • Install Font

Hi there, I have a problem with a special font.
I want to work with "Helvetica bold condensed" and "Helvetica condensed".
I put both font into the folder "All users/Library/Fonts",
but when I open Boris Title 3D, the "Helvetica condensed" Version isn´t
available. But instead some other versions of Helvetica, like "Helvetica Ultra Light".
But this Ultra Light isn´t in my font folder.
Does anyone knows from which folder especially Boris title 3D is receiving the fonts ?
When I look in the normal Text-Tool there aren´t these other fonts as well.
    Thanks for helping !

  • Corrupt font menu

The following have suddenly appeared in the Font Menus of Illustrator CS3,
    InDesign CS3 and Photoshop CS3:
GIMBQP+ITCFranklinGothicStd-Demi (= Helvetica Bold Condensed Oblique)
HWPXJN+ITCFranklinGothicStd-Book (= Helvetica Bold Condensed Oblique)
    ZWOQBD+ITCFranklinGothicStd-Book (= a spindly pixellated thing).
The Franklin Gothic Standard OpenType family is installed and displaying
correctly in the Font Menu. Fonts are managed by Linotype FontExplorer.
Illustrator CS4 is not affected, nor is any other application.
I have deleted all the AdobeFnt.lst files. No joy.
As only the CS3 applications are affected, there must be a Preference or
Cache or Database file somewhere that is specific to them. I've searched and
experimented but can't find the culprit.
Has anyone encountered this and found a solution?

  • Webkit bold default is Helvetica Narrow instead of Helvetica

In any WebView in Mail or Safari (and presumably other WebKit-based apps), whenever something is supposed to be formatted bold, unless it's specifically in a different font, instead of simply displaying Helvetica Bold, it displays Helvetica Narrow Bold instead. Has anyone ever heard of something like this? And if so, how do I fix it? I'm not using any custom stylesheets.

My mistake, it's a style of Helvetica rather than a separate font - there's Helvetica, Helvetica Bold, Helvetica Bold Italic, Helvetica Italic, Helvetica Narrow, and Helvetica Narrow Bold. It's doing the last when it should be doing the 2nd.
No, the same thing doesn't happen in help. Perhaps the help viewer has it's own stylesheets?
    I'll try disabling it.
EDIT: turning off HNB works, but once it's turned back on again, the problem reasserts itself.

  • Font substitution issues when creating PDF from PS file in Distiller

I am not sure if this post should go under Distiller Server, but it dont know if there is a difference between Distiller X and Distiller Server.
Context: I am trying to convert postscript files on my PC that originate from a unique Mac built program and unfortunately receive the following error message:
%%[ Warning: Helvetica not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Warning: Helvetica-Bold not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Warning: Helvetica-BoldOblique not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
When I try and convert the postscript font to a pdf in Acrobat Distiller X the font substitutes to Arial. I have a few versions of Helvetica on my PC but Distiller doesn’t recognise them.
My question is: how can I tell Distiller, as a default, to substitute to the Helvetica loaded on my PC rather than Arial so that I eliminate the error message and get an accurate pdf.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can set the folders in distiller by going to Settings.  See these two pictures (click on them)
    hope this helps.

Have you checked your Font Book application for duplicate fonts???
I would look for Arial & Helvetica bolds . . . but I'm thinking Arial might be the problem.

  • Font substitution when Embedding fonts

The font embedding controls in FFCore's Optimize component include the ability to upload and select a Font Substitution Configuration File: To recap the documentation:The Font Substitution Configuration File option defines the pdfToolbox configuration file that will be used when embedding fonts. This configuration file controls font substitution behavior in Optimize. Fonts are embedded as subsets. Fonts are not embedded if they have a flag indicating that embedding is not allowed. The Embed missing fonts fixup in pdfToolbox Desktop preflight profiles includes an option to select a Font substitution policy:   If you select the Open folder with configuration files you will see the text files that control font substitution. Although pdfToolbox Desktop comes with 3 predefined font substitution policies, additional ones can be created by duplicating an existing policy file and editing it (you will have to restart acrobat to see the changes).  The prefix on the filname controls the display order of the font policies within pdfToolbox. I would also ensure there are no spaces in any new filenames. The font substitution policies are plain text files with the following content: DisplayName 1 My Special Name SubstituteAll<tab>Arial<tab>Helvetica<tab>Helvetica Neue<tab>Futura<tab>Helvetica Neue<tab>Microsoft Sans Serif<tab>MS PGothic<tab>Trebuchet MS<tab>Verdana
    SubstituteFirst<tab>Arial Bold<tab>Arial-Bold<tab>Helvetica Bold<tab>Futura-Bold<tab>Futura Bold<tab>Helvetica-Bold
The DisplayName defines the name that will appear in the pdfToolbox UI: The remaining lines specify which fonts may be substituted by which fonts and the precedence for substitution.SubstituteAll - all fonts in the list are substituted for each other. When a font is missing pdfToolbox will work down the list until it reaches the name of an available font.SubstituteFirst - only the first font in the list is substituted. pdfToolbox will work down the list until it reaches the name of an available font. Note: the font names must match what pdfToolbox will find. The best way to ascertain that is to run a preflight on the file and copy the names off the report.  UPDATE - Updated example text to show location of tabs

I added a new topic to the forum covering font substitution: http://forum.support.xerox.com/t5/FreeFlow-Core/Font-substitution-when-Embedding-fonts/td-p/177411

  • [SOLVED] Web browser won't use (or can't find) Helvetica font

I'm currently using Gnome 3.6.2, Firefox 17.0.1, and Chromium 23.0.1271.97.
Many sites that I visit use a Helvetica font variant: Helvetica, Helvetica Neue, or Helvetica World.
However, it seems as though the actual names of these fonts vary depending on where they were purchased.
For example, you will find the following names scattered across the internet:
    - Helvetica Std
    - Helvetica LT
    - Helvetica LT Std
    - Helvetica LT Com
and so forth...  and this includes the variants as well.
Nowhere, including the Adobe website, have I found just "Helvetica" alone.
However, I'm not a font expert and this may not matter.
The family "Helvetica" may be specified within the font itself.
Yet, this does not seem to be the case because although I have Helvetica LT Std installed, no browser will render it for just "Helvetica".
I tried creating the following font alias:
    <alias>
    <family>Helvetica</family>
    <prefer><family>Helvetica LT Std</family></prefer>
    <default><family>fixed</family></default>
    </alias>
    But that does not work.
    Where am I going wrong?
I'd also like to note that Firebug on Firefox is the only web developer tool that will show which font is actually being rendered on the page, as opposed to just listing the css rule.

No, that's not at all what I mean.  If you read the first post, then you'd realize that I'm struggling with getting Firefox to use something like 'Helvetica LT Std' in place of 'Helvetica' or 'Helvetica Neue LT Com' in place of 'Helvetica Neue'.  I'm now resorting to simply copying over 'Helvetica.ttf' under the assumption that it will provide simply 'Helvetica' without the 'LT whatever...' .
