Here's a bit of a gotchya!

So isn't it great that we can install on two machines now and use one at a time of course?
Anyway, I thought I would utilize the ability to share my various presets and KCs between my machines, when I discovered that I couldn't. (was trying to simply import my KCs form my desktop machine, without having to network/MacHD/library/application support/Logic/Key Commands ... get ma drift?)
I can only assume that you need to have the Logic applications open to enable the sharing, however, due to the fact that I only have the one licence, I am unable to test this theory out. .. and if this theory is correct, it makes the whole concept useless for most.
Can anyone with more than one license confirm that this is indeed, the case?

You could sync to .Mac and then back on other box just fine.

  • Installing os lion on multiple computers? Here's how...with a catch

    Here is every bit of info i have gathered concerning this matter. For some reason it won't let me access the chat i had with a store representative but that doesn't matter. It IS long, but it is neccessary you get all the info. NOTE: the emails shown FIRST are actually the emails recieved and sent LAST Go down the page untill you see a block of white space with words saying "END OF EMAIL SECTION" and go up from there. IF you don't want the chunks of info, go to the first email you see below for the catch to the whole deal of putting it on multiple computers for free. Otherwise a summerized and refined steps list is shown below the "END OF EMAIL SECTION" notice. I do recommend you at LEAST look at the last email here (shown below). an explanation of the last email (shown below) is at the end of the post.

    Chris here again, from the iTunes Support team. I want to thank you for your quick response.
    First off any computer this applies too needs to have the Mac App store on it, to share the app that you purchased  you will need to log into the account that you first purchased Mac OS X Lion on in the first place to and then redownload the app onto the new computer and install it. This applies  to any app that you wish to share on another computer.
    Apps from the Mac App Store may be used on any Macs that you own or control for personal use. You may be asked for your Apple ID and password the first time you use an app. You won't have to provide them again unless you use the app on a different computer or there is an update.
    This does not apply to purchasing other apps as you can have multiple account on one compute, once again, the only exception would be if there was an update, then you will be require to provided the username and password of the account that the app in this case Mac OS X Lion was purchased on.
    I hope that I have been able to clarify things for you.  If you have any further questions, please let me know and I would be more than happy to address them for you.

    So wait. To download other apps I wouldn't have to be logged into the computer using the initial os lion accounts I'd? If I get lion and i log into the other computer and select install from the purchase history, after authorizing of course, I won't have to log into my account, the one initially used to buy and install lion, to buy and install other apps onto the other computer?

    Moving forward,  I understand that you would like to get some answers about installing OS X - Lion onto another computer. I can definitely appreciate how eager you are to get some answers to your questions. I would be happy to assist you today in this matter.
    I do first need to mention that I was unable to open the link that you have provided  and thus unable to address any concerns related to that discussion.
    You can redownload any apps including Lion that  you have purchased from the Mac App Store without incurring additional charges.
    To learn how to redownload apps on the Mac App Store, please refer to the steps in this article:
    Mac App Store: Backing up your app purchases
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4482
    If you continue to have difficulty downloading any applications, please reply to let me know or consult this article:
    Troubleshooting the Mac App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3624
    So in summary, yes after you have initially downloaded it you can then goto another computer that you have access to and redownload it and install it there. That computer will have to be apart of your authorized computers which again is up to 5 authorized machines at one time per account. This is shared with iTunes so five maximum for both, as far as what I believe the store rep meant fur OS updates you would need to log into the account the OS was purchased to get upgrades.
    Other than taking up one of the authorized computers this should have no other affect on your purchasing ability. If you have any issues with this or more questions, please let me know and I would be more than happy to address them for you.

    INITIAL EMAIL SENT: by me to apple representative
    : So I had questions about os lion. Here is what an apple store representative told me.

    (note) for some reason this link doesn't work...
    sorry for the gigantic link....
    Basically, to download on multiple macs without buying 3 times I would :
    1. buy and install on my mac
    2. log into my account (the one i bought lion on)
    3. authorize my account for use on my parent(s)' computer(s) (do i need to do this? didn't get this question answered)
    4. either check purchase history for os lion or click buy now while logged into the account I initially bought it with and install on that computer
    From what i've gathered from the store representative I've found that I need to use the account I got lion under for any further purchases on that computer. Is this true? If so does it affect iTunes at all (buying music and such)?
    Are these steps valid and legal? There has been talk about doing it like this
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15676536#15676536
    here is a discussion on the matter.
    END OF EMAIL SECTION
    HERE ARE THE SUMMERIZED STEPS:
    1. go ahead and buy/download os lion on the account of your choice (make sure you know that this account needs to be used whenever you want to download os lion on multiple computers)
    2. before going on, perhaps backing up the installer file upon completion of download would be good. This applies to people who have spotty internet as the installer file apparently disappears (self destructs) after installation but you can always re-download for free using the account initially used to install/buy/download.
    3. Go to the computer you wish to install os lion on. Open up itunes then log into itunes using the same account that you used to purchase lion on. then go to the store tab at the top left of the screen (there should be an apple symbol, then iTunes in bold then there should be a tab further along the right side called store. and, under that, go to authorize this computer. If you do this and it says it's already authorized then thats good.
    4. Open up the mac app store. Log into the account used to initially purchase lion. Go to purchase history and click install.
    Now here is the catch. According to an email sent by an apple representative for the mac app store, there are limiations:
    "This is what i had said before receiving the email: what i mean is that the computers in question belong to family members and not to me. I would not use them."
    In this matter, I will quote you the terms and conditions of the mac app store that the Mac OS X Lion is bound by,  Apps from the Mac App Store may be used on any Macs that you own or control for personal use. You may be asked for your Apple ID and password the first time you use an app. You won't have to provide them again unless you use the app on a different computer.
    Since you are indicate that there will be no use or control and then no it would be a violation of the terms and condition, if there was some personal use well then it would meet the conditions  If you have any further questions, please let me know and I would be more than happy to address them for you. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, Dylan, and I hope you have a great day.
    This means that if you are not using this method for personal use on your OWN computer it is a violation of terms of service. For example: there is a feature in OS lion that allows you to drag and drop files from one computer with lion to another computer with lion. If you were to do that so you could store files on another family members computer (and then proceed to access them now and then) it is ok.

    yes you would have to log onto her computer using your own apple id if you want it to update (assuming your id was the one downloading lion) and no for the second question. The itunes Representative said it shouldn't have any impact on your purchasing ability.....
    By the way, i don't think you're allowed to install lion on your friend's computer. Unless you are using it for yourself. As the rep said "if there was some personal use well then it would meet the conditions." so if you were to transfer, say, pictures for storage on your friend's computer then i think it'd be fine.

  • A little lost here, view doesn't seem to want to show up

    Hi,
    First of all, let me say that i am not a iPhone or Mac developper although i'm a super good programmer that knows lots of languages (c/c++, java, c#, php, vb, vb.net, etc)
    I was tasked to add a screen to an iphone app that asks for user acceptance of terms and then store the acceptance into the phone. I'm not even at the storage part yet, i'm all lost in that objective C thing... What kind of programming language is that... lol
    Anyway, i tried my best and am able to open a view that was already existant in the system as the application starts. The same view, i duplicated it and renamed all its files, identifiers in the .h and .m file to a new name. I scoured the source code of the app to add the different variables or properties just as the previous view had been added to the app.
    Compile, works, view never shows up... maybe i messed up something, try the older view i tried at first, still works... strange.
    Here is a bit of code:
    - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application {
    [window addSubView:agreementView.view];
    [window makeKeyAndVisible];
    This portion of code doesn't work, but if i change "agreementView" for "hmView" it works fine and shows the view called HmView. The app compiles completly and works in all cases, its just the agreementView that never shows up.
    Can you help me with this at all? Do i need to post anything else. Please keep in mind that i thought it would be super simple to do this and finaly, it's taken me 3h already to simply create a view and recompile the code.

    CDGI Developper wrote:
    this application is already multiview. I'm just trying to add a view in the code that shows an agreement ppl have to accept.
    Ok, understood. It's sounding more and more like a modal view would be the best solution.
    If i use the variable name of another view that was working, it loads up fine as the application starts.
    Although you mentioned creating another view, it seems likely you didn't actually do so, or that the variable you assigned to the new view doesn't actually point to that view. You haven't mentioned Interface Builder yet. IB is the resource editor for Xcode, and is usually where Cocoa developers start when creating a new view (though new views can certainly be created in code without using IB).
    Since you've been focusing on the root view so far (i.e., the view which is added directly to the window in applicationDidFinishLaunching), can we assume that you want the "agreement view" to be reached directly from the root view? Or, do you want agreementView to replace the current root view at start up? For example, do you want agreementView to be the gateway to the app, like a login screen, so that none of the app's functionality can be accessed until the agreement is accepted?
    Once we know exactly how the agreement fits into the view hierarchy, it might be easy to walk you through the steps needed to create it, display it, and dismiss it. Another question that might help clarify your requirements: Could you use an "alert view" instead of a new, full-screen view for your purpose? An instance of the UIAlertView class is used just like a Windows "MessageBox" to display a message and wait for the user to respond. So an alert view would be good for obtaining a "yes" or "no" answer from the user. Of course, if the agreement screen needs to present the text of an agreement, much like the contract presented during an app installation, I guess you'd need a new full-screen view.
    ... if i use the new view i have created (from a copy of the one that works) and i adapt all the identifiers in the different copied files, then the app still compiles, but the reference to the view variable doesn't seem to work.
    Here's an example of how to bring up a modal view that covers the root view at startup:
    - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application {
    // add the root view to the window
    [window addSubview:viewController.view];
    // make a new view controller
    // (this also makes a default view for the new controller)
    UIViewController *myController = [[UIViewController alloc] init];
    myController.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor blueColor];
    // set the modal transition style of the new controller
    myController.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleCoverVertical;
    // add a text view object to the new view
    UITextView *myTextView = [[UITextView alloc]
    initWithFrame:CGRectMake(36, 50, 248, 228)];
    myTextView.editable = NO;
    myTextView.showsVerticalScrollIndicator = YES;
    [myController.view addSubview:myTextView];
    [myTextView release];
    // add something legal to the text view
    NSString *legalText = [NSString string];
    for (int i = 0; i < 40; i++)
    legalText = [legalText
    stringByAppendingString:@"Whereas, henceforth and notwithstanding.
    myTextView.text = legalText;
    // add a button to the new view
    UIButton *myButton = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeRoundedRect];
    myButton.frame = CGRectMake(124, 320, 72, 37);
    [myButton setTitle:@"Agree" forState:UIControlStateNormal];
    [myController.view addSubview:myButton];
    // connect the action of the button to a method in this file
    [myButton addTarget:self action:@selector(dismissAgreement)
    forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside];
    // bring up the modal view as a child of the root view
    [viewController presentModalViewController:myController animated:NO];
    [myController release];
    [window makeKeyAndVisible];
    - (IBAction)dismissAgreement {
    [viewController dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];
    To see how the example works, remove the current version of applicationDidFinishLaunching from the app delegate .m file, replace it with the two methods above, save the file and click Build and Go. The example is working, tested code which doesn't require any work in Interface Builder. Be sure to cut and paste directly from the forum to the source file. At this point you don't need to lose a day or two tracking down a syntax error.

  • DVD software that supports adding 24 bit/96 kHz stereo PCM to video

    Does anyone know which DVD authoring software supports adding stereo PCM 24 bit/96 kHz files created by say recording using the Audigy 2ZS ?Most DVD authoring/burning software I've seen only seems to recognize/support 48 kHz sampled PCM audio, but video DVDs support both 24 bit/96 kHz stereo (and of course Dolby AC3).

    Here is a bit of info. that I have gathered about this:?Useful, readable and still fairly relevant summary on audio DVD-Video and DVD-Audio:?http://24bit.turtleside.com/?----- For audio DVD-Video with support for 24 bit / 96 kHz LPCM ------I have tried the shareware "Audio DVD Creator" and it works fairly well:?http://www.audio-dvd-creator.com/A DVD-Video disk created with 24/96 kHz audio tracks plays in my low-end Toshiba DVD player. The Sourceforge "Lyplex" is very rudimentary, (creates a continuous audio DVD Title .. no graphics). (note that Lyplex requires the wav files to have only 44 byte WAV headers ..!)http://audioplex.sourceforge.net/?---- For DVD-Audio with 24 bit / 96 and 92 kHz support ------Sourceforge DVD-Audio tools:?http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net/I have used this to create and burn 24 bit/(96/92 kHz) DVD-Audio disks and?they play perfectly using Creative Mediasource DVD-Audio Player 2.00.75 with Audigy 2ZS notebook. (Nero Vision 4 can be used to verify the audio encoding from the iso image and play that image directly before the DVD is actually burnt.)?A useful and up-to-date FAQ on DVD (note section 3.6.2 relevant to audio part):?http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html?Imo the best and most affordable solution (without spending $$$ for DVD authoring software) would be for Nero to update their Nero Vision 4.x to include support for 24 bit/ 96 kHz LPCM. It already has most of the other useful capability in the DVD-Video slide-show creation like synchronizing the added audio tracks to any images etc..

  • Solaris 10 Sparc - 64-bit jdk/jre in use?

    Hello,
    I have the latest version of Java jre/jdk installed on by Sun, including the 64-bit Java in the sparcv9 directories (/usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.5.0/bin/sparcv9). All the Java programs are in their default locations, and I have not changed any symlinks from the default values.
    When I enter "which java," I get this result:
    /bin/java
    which is a symlink to /usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.5.0/bin/java
    The 64-bit executables lie in the sparcv9 directory, however, so I am not sure if I am running the 64-bit java or the 32-bit. How can I be sure that I am running the 64-bit executables? I shouldn't have to re-make the symlinks in /bin to point to the sparcv9 directories, do I?
    Thank you..........

    No, you don't need to change symlinks. If you run in the 64 bit model, the binary can relaunch the 64 bit version.
    # truss -t exec java -d64 -version
    execve("/usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.5.0/bin/java", 0xFFBFFE0C, 0xFFBFFE1C) argc = 3
    execve("/usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.5.0/bin/sparcv9/java", 0x00031E18, 0x00032AD8) argc = 2
    java version "1.5.0_06"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode)
    Here the 32 bit java relaunched the 64 bit binary.

  • 10 bit colour display path for lightroom 3??

    I have been following an interesting forum topic on the PS forum here about 10 bit monitor support in PS CS5.
    For some background:
    10 bits/pixel is becoming more prevalent with high-end displays these days (it provides 1.07 billion color possibilities instead of the 16.7 million colors available with the regular 8 bit display path). Getting a fully working 10 bit path from the app to the display appears to be more of a challenge though, but a challenge which appears to have been overcome now in PS CS5. I'm wondering if moves are afoot for Lightroom to also support the 10 bit color path??
    This is my take for what you need for PS CS5 to display 10 bit colour in windows (sorry, I'm not a Mac person so couldn't comment):
    Suitable graphics adaptor - Some ATI FirePro models and nVidia Quadro models support 10 bit color (cheapest is nVidia Quadro FX 580) - the availability/use of the displayport interface is most often the tell tale pointer as to whether the adaptor supports this. Only more recent driver packs provide 10bit API support for apps to utilise, so latest drivers are often required.
    Displayport connection between graphics adaptor and monitor (DVI only supports 8 bit color)
    A monitor which supports 10bit color - (High end NEC models (PA241W/PA271W models and new Spectraview Reference models in UK) now support this as does the HP DreamColor plus some Eizo and Lacie models to mention a few)
    Enable 10bit color support in the Graphics adaptor control panel - this option generally only appears when all of the above is in place, and when enabled, provides the display path via OpenGL, for apps to utilise if they are coded for such (this option is known as 'Enable 10-bit pixel format support' for ATI, and 'Deep color for 3D applications' for nVidia)
    Enable OpenGL hardware support (under Preferences, Performance,  'Enable OpenGL Drawing' in PS CS5)
    So will this be supported in Lightroom 3 before long? Or perhaps it is already??
    Anyone know this?
    Thanks, Paul
    p.s. I realise the above chain of requirements sounds complex, but I got it working this week for a new PC build and it was actually quite straightforward.

    What would be the advantage of this?
    If you google around for how many colours the human eye is able to distinguish, you'll find scientific research quoting numbers around 10.000.000.
    Horribly false.
    The prevalent sRGB color space is covered fairly well by the 8 bits per pixel depth most commonly used ("32 bit" or "True Color" color in Windows), and that is about 16.7 million colors.  While bit depth and color space are different things, once you go to the wider gamuts in other color spaces such as Adobe RGB without using more bits you will start to see banding in similarly colored (blue skies is a good example) areas because there are not enough digital steps to make smooth transitions as the color gradually changes.  Take my word for it (I've seen it in many of my own pictures.) or do more reading for more details if it's not clear, but the key points follow.
    First go to:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XvYCC
    and read about the xvYCC color space.  In their reference number 2 down toward the bottom of the web page you find a link to:
    http://data.memberclicks.com/site/hopa/2007_xvYCC_forHPA_FINAL.pdf
    which is a pdf of a presentation discussing extended gamut color spaces.  Check out slide 3 which is at the bottom left of page 1 to see examples of many things in the real world that are quite visible to humans but outside of sRGB.
    Next check out slide 19 at the bottom left of the 5th page to see just how pathetic sRGB is at covering human vision.  The small pictures on the right in this slide show the coverage of the various color spaces of the "Munsell Color Cascade".  The gray areas indicate colors that each space cannot cover, and you can see sRGB has huge blotches of gray.
    Munsell did some of the very early definitive lab testing of human color perception.  You can start reading about him and his color system here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munsell_color_system
    and continue reading other links found on that page for more info about the extensive lab testing of human color perception.
    Looking back at slide 4 on page 1 of the presentation linked above you will find an odd looking colored region that is curved around the top.  It looks like this:
    That colored region is the estimated range of standard human vision.  There is a version of that which has the sRGB color space shown on it at:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cie_Chart_with_sRGB_gamut_by_spigget.png
    And that large view also gives you a much better idea of just how pathetically inadequate the sRGB color space is at covering human vision.  Again, bit depth is not color space, but 8 bits per pixel is pretty much maxed out trying to represent the sRGB color space without having to fake colors within it's triangle.
    There are probably cases where banding can be seen even in purely sRGB images with only 8 bits per pixel.  And every color that you see in that large region with the curve at the top (in the picture shown in the last link above) that lies outside the sRGB triangle will have to be "clipped", which is converted into some color that does lie within the space.  That means you never see any actual colors that fall outside the triangle even if 8 bits per pixel could have covered them somehow using some other color space.  They're simply lost.
    If you do try to use 8 bits for wider gamut color spaces you end up with the banding I mention above because there are too many shades of color to be represented by 256 steps for each of red, green, and blue.  Thus the need for 10 bits or more per pixel.
    I hope this helps to dispel any more myths about the limitations of human vision falling within what 8 bits per pixel or sRGB can provide.

    PAM indicates that, Oracle runs in 64bit mode only in 10g version
    This would require an oracle upgrade.
    Please suggest an approach when your database size is huge.
    Govind

    Hi Markus,
    Let me cleary explain the sceanrio,
    I have a Sandbox 4.6C , Oracle 9.2.0.8 with Windows 2003 Server on 32 bit with over  1 TB of data.
    Now i have a brand new x86_64 bit hardware with Windows 2003 Server 64 bit OS install.
    I have to use this to make a System Copy of the current Sandbox and upgrade it ECC 6.0.
    How do i plan this, it is quite confusing???
    There are two things here
    a) 32 bit to 64 bit migration
    b) Oracle 10g upgrade
    Plan a)
    Make an Export of the current 9i 32 bit database , fresh install of Oracle 10g  64 bit on the new 64 bit server and import the whole data
    But the only problem is huge data to export.
    Plan b)
      Make a homogeneous sytem copy since it is Windows 32 bit to Windows 64 bit and then upgrade to Oracle 10g. This requires me to install Oracle 32 bit 9i on a 64 bit hardware, is it SAP recommended??
    How do i do this??

    It's not exactly a typo, but it's Canon's version of 'p'. Think of it as 'p'.
    "..XLR in x 2 (what is this?) (what kind of mic can i plug into this?.." ..erm, you are really are starting from scratch, aren't you? XLR connections (..also known as Cannon connections: nothing to do with Canon cameras..) are "professional" three pin mono connections for mics. They look like this:
    ..that's a mic plug, and the sockets on the camera look something like this:
    Why not Google for 'XLR' or 'Cannon' or 'balanced audio'?
    The XHA1 doesn't have normal little Sony-style 3.5mm stereo mic inputs (..headphone-socket style..) but has these large XLR connectors, for mics which have XLR plugs instead of 3.5mm mini-jacks.
    The XHA1 is an excellent camera (the Digital Cinema Society has just sent me a newsletter about current cinema productions shot on digital cameras, and the similar XLH1 has been used for
    "..Aussie & Ted (Primarily XL H1 to HDV/Varicam for Green Screen/RED One for Background Plates), Director Shuki Levy, DP: James Mathers, Starring Beverly DiAngelo and Dean Cain. Release: 2008
    North Starr (XL H1 to HDV), Director/Actor: Matthew Stanton, DP: Peter Levermann, (Accepted into Dramatic Feature Competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival).."
    It's a heavy beast, but has a marvellous lens and autofocus and image stabilisation (..here's a bit of sample footage from a similar 'big brother' XLH1..) though it may be overkill for what you want to do. But if you really want to empty your wallet into the waiting lap of a salesman, do go right ahead..!

  • Installing on 64-bit Vista

    Hi everyone!  I'm at my wit's end   I just purchased Adobe CS4 Design Premium for Windows Vista.  I, however, cannot get ANY of the programs to install.  Immediately after I enter the serial number and the install "begins" I get an error message saying that the following programs (all of the them) were unable to install.  I've tried everything under the sun.  It's not the software, because it began to install on my wife's computer.  The only difference between the two computers is hers is 32-bit OS and mine's 64-bit OS.
    Can ANYBODY help with this?  I would be forever grateful!
    Thank you so much.

    Thank you for the reply.  Obviously since it's Sunday, I can't call them today and would have to wait until tomorrow which is a work day.
    I'm running a Toshiba Satellite A305 4.00 Gig Ram, 220 Gigs free hard-drive space. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00 GHz
    My Vista is Home Premium, and it says I have Service Pack 1 installed (I already tried to install it again and said the update was already on my computer.)
    Adobe's customer support helped me through another issue the other night and the support agent did not have time to help me through this before he had to hang up.
    I honestly have a feeling that it's something ridiculously simple that I'm/we're overlooking, but the fact that it began installing on my wife's 32-bit OS Vista system makes me think it's not the software. I actually called Adobe the other night and have been told by numerous sources that CS4 will not install on a 64-bit OS.  Adobe's customer support has not said this, but my Toshiba customer support helper said I would have to downgrade my Vista.  I am hoping beyond hope this is not the answer.
    Again, I appreciate you reading.  If you can offer any advice or where to look, again, I'd be forever grateful.

  • Overlapping date problem, I'm a bit stumped...

    Hi,
    My first post here, woohooo!!
    I'm trying to write some SQL for overlapping dates, hoping someone could point me in the write direction because I'm a bit stuck :(
    Heres the scenario....
    Tables are simillar to this (although I've changed it for the sake of this example).
    TABLE A, TABLE B, TABLE C look like this
    - EMPLOYEE_NUMBER VARCHAR2
    - START_DATE DATE
    - END_DATE DATE
    These three tables contain information on an employees working period. The dates in each table can overlap each other.
    For example
    TABLE A
    AAAA, 05-10-1991, 05-10-2020
    AAAA, 05-01-2000, 20-05-2003
    BBBB, 09-12-1999, 02-07-2009
    TABLE B
    AAAA, 01-11-2002, 01-09-2003
    TABLE C
    AAAA, 15-08-2003, 12-05-2004
    Heres the tricky bit. There is a hierarchy, any dates in table C will overide any of the dates in table A and B. Table B will override any dates Table A. I need a query to break up the dates to show one consecutive timeline for any given employee. The query would obviously need to use all 3 tables.
    Therefore I would need a query to output the following for Employee AAAA.
    EMPLOYEE, START_DATE, END_DATE
    AAAA, 05-10-1991, 04-01-2000
    AAAA, 05-01-2000, 31-10-2002
    AAAA, 01-11-2002, 14-08-2003
    AAAA, 15-08-2003, 12-05-2004
    AAAA, 13-05-2004, 05-10-2020
    I've worked out how to write this using PLSQL although its pretty feral code, hoping there might be a cleaner method using SQL. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks!

  • Bit Depth and Bit Rate

    I have a pre recorded mp3 VO. I placed it into a track bed in GB. Clients wants a compressed audio file with bit depth: 16 bit and bitrate: 128kps max, but recommends 96kbps. If I need to adjust the bit depth and bite rate, can I do it in GB? and if so, where? Thanks for any help.

    Please be aware that Bit Depth and Bit Rate are two completely different things!
    They belong to a group of buzz words that belong to Digital Audio and that is the field we are dealing with when using GarageBand or any other DAW. Some of those terms pop up even in iTunes.
    Digital Audio
    To better understand what they are and what they mean, here is a little background information.
    Whenever dealing with Digital Audio, you have to be aware of two steps, that convert an analog audio signal into a digital audio signal. These magic black boxes are called ADC (Analog Digital Converter) and “on the way back”, DAC (Digital Analog Converter).
    Step One: Sampling
    The analog audio (in the form of an electric signal like from an electric guitar) is represented by a waveform. The electric signal (voltage) changes up and down in a specific form that represents the “sound” of the audio signal. While the audio signal is “playing”, the converter measure the voltage every now and then. These are like “snapshots” or samples, taken at a specific time. These specific time intervals are determined by a “Rate”, it tells you how often per seconds something happens. The unit is Hertz [Hz] defined as “how often per seconds” or “1/s”. A Sample Rate of 48kHz means that the converter takes 48,000 Samples per second.
    Step Two: Quantize (or digitize)
    All these Samples are still analog, for example, 1.6Volt, -0.3Volt, etc. But this analog value now has to be converted into a digital form of 1s and 0s.This is done similar to quantizing a note in GarageBand. The value (i.e. the note) cannot have any position, it  has to be placed on a grid with specific values (i.e. 1/16 notes). The converter does a similar thing. It provides a grid of available numbers that the original measured Sample has to be rounded to (like when a note get shifted in GarageBand by the quantize command). This grid, the amount of available numbers, is called the Bit Depth. Other terms like Resolution or Sample Size are also used. A Bit Depth of 16bit allows for 65,535 possible values.
    So the two parameters that describe the quality of an Digital Audio Signal are the Sample Rate (“how often”) and the Bit Depth (“how fine of a resolution”). The very simplified rule of thumb is, the higher the Sample Rate, the higher the possible frequency, and the higher the Bit Depth, the higher the possible dynamic.
    Uncompressed Digital Audio vs. Compressed Digital Audio
    So far I haven’t mentioned the “Bit Rate” yet. There is a simple formula that describes the Bit Rate as the product of Sampel Rate and Bit Depth: Sample Rate * Bit Depth = Bit Rate. However, Bit Depth and how it is used (and often misused and misunderstood) has to do with Compressed Digital Audio.
    Compressed Digital Audio
    First of all, this has nothing to do with a compressor plugin that you use in GarageBand. When talking about compressed digital audio, we talk about data compression. This is a special form how to encode data to make the size of the data set smaller. This is the fascinating field of “perceptual coding” that uses psychoacoustic models to achieve that data compression. Some smart scientists found out that you can throw away some data in a digital audio signal and you wouldn’t even notice it, the audio would still sound the same (or almost the same). This is similar to a movie set. If you shoot a scene on a street, then you only need the facade of the buildings and not necessary the whole building.
    Although the Sample Rate is also a parameter of uncompressed digital audio, the Bit Depth is not. Instead, here is the Bit Rate used. The Bit Rate tells the encoder the maximum amount of bits it can produce per second. This determines how much data it has to throw away in order to stay inside that limit. An mp3 file (which is a compressed audio format) with a Bit Rate of 128kbit/s delivers a decent audio quality. Raising the Bit Rate to 256bit/s would increase the sound quality. AAC (which is technically an mp4 format) uses a better encoding algorithm. If this encoder is set to 128kbit/s, it produces a better audio quality because it is smarter to know which bits to throw away and which one to keep.
    Conclusion
    Whenever you are dealing with uncompressed audio (aiff, wav), the two quality parameters are Sample Rate [kHz] and Bit Depth [bit] (aka Resolution, aka Bit Size)
    Whenever you are dealing with compressed audio (mp3, AAC), the two quality parameters are Sample Rate [kHz] and Bit Rate [kbit/s]
    If you look at the Export Dialog Window in GarageBand, you can see that the Quality popup menu is different for mp3/AAC and AIFF. Hopefully you will now understand why.
    Hope that helps

  • VOLUME I need a bit more

    Hi
    Just purchased some new in ear phones for my iPod Touch and they need just a bit more volume on some music.
    I assume the Touch cannot drive my new ones as well the old ones.
    I wish there was a way to make your own EQ rather than select from the list, both options would be good, pick one or make one.....
    I suppose they are keeping it down to stop ear damage, but some out here maybe a bit harder of hearing than others and need a bit more...............

    Hi
    This maybe the answer I was looking for.
    Listning the the songs in iTunes, if they seem quiet then.........
    Right clicking the song>get info>options>volume adjustment...
    I assume the gain in volume is then saved into the track so will stay that way when copied over to the Touch.

  • Getting null and 0 outputting to screen or file.

    Hi everyone,
    I am trying to make a phone book program in Java. However the main functions of the phone book (adding and displaying contacts) isn't really working, it is outputting null or 0.
    Here is a class to create an object for family members:
    import java.util.StringTokenizer;
    public class phoneFamily extends phoneNumbers
         protected int home;
         public phoneFamily(String name, String address, int mobile, int business, int home)
              super(name, address, mobile, business);
              this.home = home;
         public phoneFamily(StringTokenizer P)
              super(P);
              while (P.hasMoreTokens()){home = Integer.parseInt(P.nextToken());}
         public void setHome(int home)
              this.home = home;
         public int getHome()
              return home;
         public String toString()
              return "Name: " + name + "\nAddress: " + address + "\nMobile: " + mobile +
                   "\nBusiness: " + business + "\nHome: " + home;
         public String CSV()
              return name + "," + address + "," + mobile + "," + business + "," + home;
    }Now I'm assuming that the problem I am having, where null or 0 is written to the file and screen is caused by the methods that reads a contact, writes them to the file, prints them to the screen. Here are those bits of codes.
    Reads Contact:
    private phoneNumbers ReadContact()
              int x = 0;
              String contact;
              StringTokenizer S;
              while (x < 1 || x > 3)
                   System.out.print("Which type of contact would you like?");
                   System.out.print("\n1)Family\n2)Workers\n3)Friends");
                   x = keyboard.nextInt();
              contact = ReadString("contact name") + "," +
                         ReadString("address") + "," +
                         ReadString("mobile") + "," +
                         ReadString("business") + ",";
              if (x==1)
                   contact+=ReadString("home");
              else if (x==2)
                   contact+=ReadString("email") + "," + ReadString("job title") + "," + ReadString("department");
              else
                   contact+=ReadString("email") + "," + ReadString("home");
              S = new StringTokenizer(contact,",");
              if (x==1)
                   return new phoneFamily(S);
              else if (x==2)
                   return new phoneWorkers(S);
              else
                   return new phoneFriends(S);
    Writes to File
    public void Save() throws IOException
              PrintWriter phoneFile = new PrintWriter(new FileOutputStream(PH_FILE));
              for (int i=0;i<NumOfContacts;i++)
                   String phoneX = phone.CSV();
                   phoneFile.println(phoneX);
              phoneFile.close();
              System.out.println("Contacts have been saved successfully.");
    Prints on Screen
    public void PrintFamily()
              System.out.println("Contacts Stored as FAMILY:");
              System.out.println("");
              //#=7, Name=24, Address=28, Email=24, Mobile=12, Business=12,
              System.out.println(SpaceGen("#",7) + SpaceGen("Name",24) + SpaceGen("Address",28) +
                   SpaceGen("Mobile",12) + SpaceGen("Business",12) + SpaceGen("Home",12));
              //System.out.println(RepChar('=',100));
              for (int i=0;i<NumOfContacts;i++)
                   if (phone[i] instanceof phoneFamily)
                        System.out.print(SpaceGen((new Integer(i+1)).toString(),7));
                        System.out.print(SpaceGen(phone.getName(),24));
                        System.out.print(SpaceGen(phone[i].getAddress(),28));
                        System.out.print(SpaceGen(new Integer(((phoneFamily)phone[i]).getMobile()).toString(),12));
                        System.out.print(SpaceGen(new Integer(((phoneFamily)phone[i]).getBusiness()).toString(),12));
                        System.out.print(SpaceGen(new Integer(((phoneFamily)phone[i]).getHome()).toString(),12));
              //System.out.println(RepChar('=',100));
    For some reason the last thing you enter when adding a contact (example above, home number), gets displayed first (when it should be name) and the rest are null or 0. The file looks something like this (in CSV)
    111222333,null,0,0,0
    The "111222333" is supposed to be the name but like I said last value entered is being put first.
    I've gone over my code several times, with no luck :-(.

    I made a silly mistake in the bit where the details are read. After fixing that everything is running well :-).
    My mistake:
    I had something like:
    while(P.hasMoreTokens()){this.data = P.nextToken();}
    while(P.hasMoreTokens()){this.data2 = P.nextToken();}
    and so on...Obviously had to use "if"s and not "while"s to read the data...
    Thanks for offering a helping hand :-) though!
