Here's a puzzler, how to improve reception on iMac Flat Panel, w/built-in

Here's a puzzler, how to improve reception on iMac Flat Panel, w/built-in airport card. I have done alot of research into cantennas and the like, including parabolic dishes etc. I am trying to connect to my friends open network a few houses away but get sporadic signal most of the time. Just for fun i took a piece of aluminum foil and fashioned a curved dish and saw the signal strength spike to more than double sometimes. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this. Since i am on the all in one iMac (the half sphere base style) Flat Panel i don't have the option of putting my antenna in a can, dish etc.
This is not a critical issue, i am obviously on line and getting along, but would still enjoy any suggestions for improving the performance on this airport card.
Thanx in advance, Anykey

Hi! That's a puzzler only due to there being no external port for adding an
antenna outside of the one built-in the iMac!
Another option may involve some purchase; as you may be able to extend
your own wireless network by using an Apple airport base station as a
bridge to (perhaps) see a greater increase in signal strength; it could act
as a repeater for both receiving and sending the IP signal. Then, you could
administer the base station by ethernet cable.
There are a few on-machine antenna options for some models of Apple
computer at QuickerTek online; they clip outside of PowerBooks, etc and
are said to not intrude or require wires into them in order to work externally.
I am not sure, but suspect the Quicker antennas may use USB power.
And that brings into the question the use of external USB wi-fi devices
and altering them into a directional antenna; most of these have the
wi-fi card and antenna built into the same little module. Then you may
have to make your own dish to focus the beam after all!
I hear a small dish network satellite dish could be used to capture or
send signals, but do not know if you'd need a powered device to use it.
That would have to be for "line-of-sight" use, of course.
Some links I'd posted somewhere in Discussions were to a few inventive
antenna and base DIY sites; I no longer have the urls saved...!
Best of luck in this matter!

  • How can improve performace of iMac 24" for FCS?

    Hi,
    I just bought iMac Intel Core2Duo 24"
    3.06GHz/ 2GB Ram/ 750GB HD/ 512 VRAM.
How can I improve or maximize its performance so it would run faster in FCP for Renders, Motion, Compressor and other pro apps?
I do understand that I need to add memory and that I'll add but aside from that,
what else do I need to do to make it faster?
    Thanks,

    Yes you can: http://ftp.georgetek.com/George/FCPscatchdisk.png
Just keep in mind that read/write speeds to an external USB drive are less than half of what you are getting internally. Your best bet for an external editing drive would be FireWire 800.

  • How to connect an old ADC flat panel to the new Mac mini?

I am thinking of getting one of these new Mac mini's for the kids in the den and I have an old 20" flat panel ADC from Apple that is still going strong. Is there an adapter that will work with this configuration?

Somewhat ungainly, but you'll need the mini-DVI-DVI adaptor (supplied with the new mini), and a DVI-ADC adaptor (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8661LL/B?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjE0NTg4NA)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The general rule is that you can't:

  • How to clean Keyboard for  iMac G4

Have an old iMac (dome shape) G4 and white keyboard. Right now, I have some dirt lodged below the keys inside the keyboard.
Question: can I clean this up? take apart the keyboard?

    Hi Joseph,
Apparently dismantling these keyboards is not for the fainthearted. If you're feeling brave have a look at: these instructions.
We have had some success cleaning our Apple Pro keyboard by disconnecting it (obviously!) and just gently tapping it around upsidedown, blowing into it, and using the vacuum cleaner crevice tool.
You have inadvertently posted your query in the iBook forum. You might get more constructive advice over in the iMac Flat Panel Forum. Not that you're not welcome here, you understand…

  • How can I improve reception?

I have a MiFi 5110L and live in a rural area.  How can I improve reception so pages don't freeze and go unresponsive so frequently?

I routinely get -100dBm reception.  I don't usually get an error message; I
just drop from 3G to 1X.  I'm in 85545.  I've found I get better reception
in the motorhome than I do in the house.  I had such a hard time getting
the sim card in the first time I'm hesitant to take it out, but if I keep
having problems, I'll try that.  I know that living so rural means I don't
get the same reception as I would in a metro area.  Would installing an
antenna of some sort help reception?  What type of antenna should I install?
    Thanks for the help.

What little you did give us is wrong. DATE is both a reserved word in SQL, and too vague to be a column name. It looks like that vague “line” is a physical line on a print out. RDBMS does not have a generic “id”; we use logic and the Law of Identity while you

  • How to improve the performance of adobe forms

    Hi,
Please give me some suggestions as to how to improve the performance of adobe form?
Right now when I' am doing user events it is working fine for first 6 or 7 user events. From the next
    one it is hanging.
I read about Wizard form design approach, how to use the same here.
    Thanks,
    Aravind

    Hi Otto,
The form is created using HCM forms and processes. I' am performing user events in the form.
User events will doa round trip, in which form data will be sent to backend SAP system. Processing will
happen on the ABAP side and result will appear on the form. First 6 or 7 user events works correctly,
the result is appearing on the form. Around 8 or 9th one, the wait symbol appears and the form is not
re-rendered. The form is of size 6 pages. The issue is not coming with form of size 1 page.
I was reading ways to improve performance during re-rendering given below.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/livecycle/articles/DynamicInteractiveFormPerformance.pdf
It talks about wizard form design approach. But in SFP transaction, I am not seeing any kind of wizard.
Let me know if you need further details.
    Thanks,

  • Performance blocker on cFP-2020: file-I/O! How to improve?

    Hi all,
after resolving my serial-communication problems I still have a performance problem. The code is way too slow which causes e.g. the ftp-server on the fieldpoint to not respond anymore to requests from my PC. I always get timeouts. I also frequently get loop-finished-late events within my two state-machines. I have now used the timing and performance monitor to sse which vi is taking so much time. The result: A file-I/O vi that writes data and log-entries into three different log-files. With a former verion I simply used one vi that appends a string to an existing file. However, since this function disappeared with LV8.2 I had to rewrite the code to use the following sequence of LV-functions:
    - file open
    - set pointer to the end
    - write string
    - file close
My vi shich calls this sequence is horribly slow - execution time per run is about 200ms and the top of the list in the performance monitor. Are there any suggestions on how to improve this code? I simply want to add a string to the end of the log-file......
The vi is attached. There are two features in the code which are not self-explanatory: The first sub-vi generates a new file if is used for longer than a preset time (15 minutes in my case). So the create-time of the file is stored in the filename and whenever the current time exceeds create-time plus 15 min. A new file name is created. For simplicity, the name is stored only for the first of the three log-files. The other two are created by string operations from the first filename. Second, whenever a file is "created", that means is does not exist yet, a data-header is written to the file, before data is appended.
Can you see simple improvements here that will accelerate this code? Maybe open the file only once and then append data subsequently and only close it when a new file is created? But I do not need all three files all the times, there may be situations where only one file is needed, and the others need not be created at all.
    Thanks,
    Olaf

I think moving the open file, move to end of file, and close file out of the loop would certainly help.  These functions could be associated with or built into your "determine new file" VI.  Since the file paths get passed into the loops, you could pass them through with shift registers so that you can close them after the loops end.
One other thing to look at is your initialize array and insert into array functions.  I believe insert into array is one of the costlier functions.  Build array would be better.  And initializing a much larger array and using replace array subset is better yet.  But if you wind up with more elements than you had originally initialized for, you will have to use build array to enlarge it.   I would recommend searching the Labview forum for insert into array, build array, and replace array subset for threads that do a better job explaining the differences and advantages of each.
Thanks, that improved the performance of this vi by about two orders of magnitude. The application is now much more stable.
However, I cannot connect to the cFP-2020 anymore by ftp. I even swithed the fieldpoint to boot without vi.
To be specific, I can access the cFP and cd into all directories except for the directory with the data. I assume that there is a large
amount of files in it now, but used to work before even with lots of files. The only thing that might be not so nice is that there is a space
in the folder name, but that has been like that for years now and used to work.
Is there any reason (corrupted file or something like that) that can cause the ftp to fail on this specific directory?
    Thanks,
    Olaf
...at least I am very close now to a satisfying and running system.... :-)

  • Tutorial: How To Improve YouTube Playback on iBook G3 (Dual USB)

This is a brief tutorial on how to improve YouTube video playback on an Apple iBook G3. As of now, I have only tested this method on my own iBook. iBook's with lower specs than the 900 MHz model may not receive the same performance upgrade from this brief tutorial. With that said, here is what you can do to attempt to make YouTube more functional on your iBook G3.
    1) If the iBook is running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), disable Dashboard and Spotlight:
While widgets are fun and Spotlight is a useful quick search tool, they are known resource consumers that make video playback problematic for older Mac laptops, such as the iBook G3. To accomplish this, you will have to use the Terminal. Once the Terminal is open, enter the following command
    {color:purple}defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES{color}
After entering this command, you will then need to restart the Dock (Dashboard is owned by the Dock). To do so, again, using the Terminal, you will enter the following command.
    {color:purple}killall Dock{color}
You may still see the Dashboard icon in the Dock, but clicking on it should do nothing.
For the next part, you will use the Terminal to disable Spotlight. Open the Terminal and enter the following command.
    {color:purple}sudo nano /etc/hostconfig{color}
This will bring up a configuration listing. Use the arrow keys to scroll down and change the value, SPOTLIGHT=-YES-, to SPOTLIGHT=-NO-.
From here, you should press Ctrl+X to exit, upon which it will ask if you want to save. Follow the on screen prompts to save, and exit out of the Terminal. Spotlight will still appear in the corner of your screen, but it won't search for anything. Now on to the next step.
    2) For any video URL on YouTube, add &fmt=5 to the end of the URL, and this will force videos to run in quarter VGA mode (320x240). The video quality will be degraded, but you should maintain a stable frame rate that is uninterrupted and capable of streaming without the need to pause and wait for the entire video to load.
This method has worked for me for old and new videos alike. Unfortunately, I have not found a way to make iTunes/Quicktime force videos into a low resolution mode, so this fix will only resolve video playback involving YouTube.
*To restore functionality to Dashboard and Spotlight:*
    1) How to Restore the Dashboard
Open the terminal and input the following command
    {color:purple}defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO {color}
After entering this command, you will have to restart the Dock. To do so, enter the following command into the terminal
    {color:purple}killall Dock{color}
Now, can drag the Dashboard icon back to the Dock, or if you did not remove it to begin with, it should function once again.
    2) How to restore Spotlight
Open the terminal and enter the following command
    {color:purple}sudo nano /etc/hostconfig{color}
This will open up a config file. Scroll down (using the arrow keys) to the portion that says SPOTLIGHT=-NO- and change the value so that it says SPOTLIGHT=-YES-
Exit the config file by pressing Ctrl+X. Follow the onscreen prompts to save the config file, and you are allset.
Best of luck to you all. I hope that this tutorial has been helpful.

  • How to improve spreadsheet speed when single-threaded VBA is the bottleneck.

My brother works with massive Excel spreadsheets and needs to speed them up. Gigabytes in size and often with a million rows and many sheets within the workbook. He's already refined the sheets to take advantage of Excel's multi-thread recalculation and
seen significant improvements, but he's hit a stumbling block. He uses extensive VBA code to aid clarity, but the VB engine is single-threaded, and these relatively simple functions can be called millions of times. Some functions are trivial (e.g. conversion
functions) and just for clarity and easily unwound (at the expense of clarity), some could be unwound but that would make the spreadsheets much more complex, and others could not be unwound.
He's aware of http://www.analystcave.com/excel-vba-multithreading-tool/ and similar tools but they don't help as the granularity is insufficiently fine.
So what can he do? A search shows requests for multi-threaded VBA going back over a decade.

The performance optimization should be based on the business. Since I’m not familiar with your business, so I can only give you some general suggestions from the technical perspective. According to your description, the size of the spreadsheet had reached
Gigabytes and data volume is about 1 million rows. If so, I will suggest you storing the data to SQL Server and then use the analysis tools (e.g. Power Pivot).
