Here's a simple fix for Mail constantly asking for account password

This one was driving me nuts, but now I have a  fix...I think. Open up Keychain Access in Utiliites. Double click the entry in the login keychain, then check "Show Password." Give your login password and hit the "Allow" button. After the pword is shown, just close the box. That's it. No more need to redo all the pwords in Mail and Keychain. Works for me. Mail seems to need some hand holding from time to time.

My e-mail provider is Verizon. If I'm being asked for the password for the main account, I double-click on this in the login keychain shown below. But since I'm using Snow Leopard, this might appear differently for you, although I doubt it.

My Mac Mail constantly asks for our passwords before opening our accounts.  New iMac with OS x Maverick.  We get messages such as " Mail can't connect.  Appears to be offline due to network problems." or "The connection to the server (null) in port ) timed out."  I have confirmed server connections OK with Cox Communication and our Cox Webmail accounts.

    Hi Bob13524,
Man, that definitely sounds frustrating! And it sounds like this issue is occurring with several accounts, so let’s see if we can troubleshoot this. The following resource provides some great information for troubleshooting Mail issues, including information on using the Connection Doctor:

  • Mail constantly asking for passwords

I know this has come up lots of times but nothing I try fixes the issue. Mac Mail constantly asks me for passwords.
Hotmail is the worst for some reason.  I have fixed keychain, removed password from keychain, changed password, removed account and added again and still it goes on and on, several times an hour!
I have exhausted all advice i found on here and i can't think of anything else to try. it is most frustrating. has anyone found a new fix for this issue?
also, i have no idea where to post this as nothing comes up when searching for mail or email !

You may want to ask in the forum for the MacOS X version you are using. Mail is part of MacOS X.  So ask in the Yosemite forum, Mavericks forum, etc.
Have you read the Help page in Mail  "If Mail keeps asking for your password"?  It may be a problem with your key chain, or a problem with your mail account on the provider's site.
If you entered the correct password in the password dialog in Mail, but continue to be asked for your password, try these suggestions.
In Keychain Access, locate and delete the email account password item.Open Keychain Access for me
In Disk Utility, select the volume (for your hard disk or disks) in the list, click First Aid, then Verify Disk. After you’ve verified (and repaired, if necessary) the disk, try sending yourself a message. Open Disk Utility for me

  • Mail constantly asks for password

I have 3 email accounts setup in Mail. 1 is a POP email. The other 2 are IMAP.
For some strange reason from the moment I open Mail, 1 of the IMAPs prompts me for my password. I enter it. Emmediately, it asks for my password again, and then the prompt disappears and re-appears every 30-60 seconds.
I tried deleting this account & re-adding it, but I keep getting this same result. I checked that both IMAP accounts have the exact same settings (they are both "@rogers.com" accounts). I made sure that my accounts are all set to check for new mail every 15 minutes.
Open Mail, password prompt. Enter password, password promt. It goes away for 30-60 seconds, password prompt. This is getting annoying.
I can log in to that mail account via web, but it's so much easier using Mail for all of them together at once.
    Anyone else encounter this issue?
Anyone know how to fix this?
    X

This happens to me too (every two months over the past year). And many other readers as I can see.
It has nothing with the operator as I am using an IMAP account in Austria.
I have not been able to find a clear solution to this proplem in the many threads that are out there:
    - Verify and repar keychains -> does not solve it
    - Delete passwords from keychain -> does not solve it
    - Entering the password in the mail dialogue box and NOT selecting the box to save the pwd in the keychain does not give access to the mail account either.
Have you been able to find a solution?

  • A definitive solution to stop Mail constantly asking for my password??

I have Snow Leopard running on Intel iMac.
Like so many others my Mac Mail keeps on asking for my password even though its saved on my keychain.
I have read pretty every solution I can find find from Keychain repair to deleting and creating a new account.... No joy... problem still occurs a few times a day on both my Hotmail pop and Gmail pop.....
I wanted to know if there is a definitive solution to this problem... is there a software release for this or an ABSOLUTE .... PROVEN TO FIX ALL OCCURRENCES SOLUTION.... that works for everyone.??
If not then I suppose I must use a different email client
    Thanks for your replies

Dodgy servers being likely... is that going to happen with both Gmail and Hotmail?
Doesn't happen with my GMail account. I'm connecting to GMail via IMAP, what about you? As to Hotmail, that one's notorious for having trouble with Mail.
As to the fact that you don't see the problem with Entourage, it could be that there's something wrong with your Mail setup, but I don't know what might be different about how Entourage communicates with the server. I'm sure Ernie might have some insights.
In the "Preferences" "Accounts" "Account Information" I put in my password and then save on exiting... as far as I am concerned it is saved within the software. But whenever this issue occurs, the saved password has vanished.
It's actually stored in the Keychain, which could be one source of problems. If your keychain is damaged, it would cause problems for Mail but probably not Entourage. Try opening Keychain Access and choose Keychain Access -> Keychain First Aid. Also, try deleting the account passwords in the keychain completely, then enter the password when Mail prompts for it and check the box to save it in the keychain.
Why would a "troublesome server from a location with bad internet service" delete the password I have saved on an Apple software product...
If you get a password prompt, and you try to enter the password but it gets rejected due to some difficulty communicating with the server, Mail might decide to remove the "incorrect" password. That's just theory, as I've never actually done that. On the rare occasion that I get a password prompt, I just hit cancel, wait a little while and take the account online again. Typically, unless the server is still having difficulty, mail is retrieved without the need to re-enter the password.

  • Mail keeps asking for password despite a healthy keychain

So I've run across the problem where Mail constantly asks for the password even though I have it stored in a keychain. I have searched the board and tried every solution proposed. I have repaired the keychain and deleted and reset the password ... everything. It seemed to work for a couple of days ... then BAM! It started happening again. A solution would be extremely helpful as it is very annoying to continually plug in the password every hour or so.

I have the same issue. A previous thread on the topic was closed (although unresolved), so I guess this is where we can discuss possible solutions. Here's one curious thing I've noticed that helps me manage the issue (but doesn't resolve it):
At first when Mail started asking for passwords for all my accounts (even though before they had been working fine), I entered each one and also checked the box saying that it could be stored in the Keychain. But Mail just kept re-asking for the passwords non-stop, making the app unusable. So then I tried entering the passwords but not checking the box to save the passwords in the keychain, and lo and behold, that worked. However, I still have to re-enter the passwords every time I re-open Mail. This is very annoying, and I've even started using Outlook a bit, but Mail is so much better that I'm really hoping to find a solution to this issue.
(As with the OP, I've tried the keychain repair solutions and so forth. I wish I could pinpoint what might have triggered this behaviour to start suddenly just a week ago, but I'm just not sure.)
I wonder if there's a way to edit how Mail interacts with server...

  • Mail contantly asking for password when iPhone is on?

Mail constantly asks for password. I have repaired keychain, deleted the email account and reset it. re-installed the system from scratch. It now seems that if the iPhone and the macbook pro are on at the same time the password issue is relentless if the iPhone is off then the password is asked for once only and then works normally. Surely I can have them both on. Yes I have the mail accounts prefs set up correctly. any help - please

    John,
    Try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Mail keeps asking for password, over and over and over again. How to fix?

How do I stop this behavior of Mail?
I tried disableing my account and resetting it up, but it won't let me do that either. I use Mac OS 10.6.8.

OK. When you say that Mail doesn’t save the password, are you basing this solely on the fact that Mail keeps asking for it? Or is there something else that makes you believe Mail doesn’t save the password?
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, try removing the password entry from the keychain and let Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.

  • Mail is constantly asking for my password.

I enter the password and tell keychain to remember it, but an hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, later mail is asking for the password again. The program has worked for a number of years without problem.  Then a couple of months ago this started.  It is happening on all three of my systems.  Anyone have any ideas?

    Open Keychain Access   /Applications/Utilities
    Select Passwords on the left.
    Delete your mail password.
Open the Mail app. From the menu bar click Mail / Preferences then select the Accounts tab then select the Account Information tab.
Type in your password. You should be prompted to save that to a new keychain. Click Yes when promppted.
If that doesn't help, go to the Keychain Access menu bar then click Keychain First Aid.
Click Verify then click Repair if necessary.
Try adding the password again in the Mail / Accounts Information pane.

  • Mail keeps asking for password even though I checked "add password to ..."

    keychain"
This started happen a few days ago. Every few minutes when it checks my main mail account, the password box pops up. I searched on here, saw recommendation for running Keychain FirstAid. Ran it and it gave me this error message:
    "Repair started
Checking keychain configuration for user (user ID=501)
    Home directory is /Users/user
    Checked login keychain
User differs on ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist, should be 501, owner is 0
Owner not corrected on ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist, reason: No such file or directory
    Checked default keychain
    Checked keychain search list
    Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    Checked contents of /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain
Warning: some problems were not fixed
    Repair failed"
How do I fix this problem? l have several mailboxes for different accounts and I have seen this happen occassionally with them as well.

Of course you only had read access to that file. That’s precisely what I said and why I suggested to do File > Get Info (⌘I) on com.apple.security.plist, to fix that problem by changing the Owner in the Ownership & Permissions > Details section, which was wrong and the cause of the problem...
Anyway, the file should be re-created when needed, so I wouldn’t worry about that. Actually, opening Keychain Access and running Keychain First Aid again may cause the file to be re-created.
The thing is, do you still have the problem of Mail repeatedly asking for the password? If Keychain First Aid doesn’t report any problems now, you may try removing the password entry from the keychain and letting Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.
Note, however, that Mail often doesn’t correctly report what the problem really is. If Mail can connect to the server but cannot log into your mail account for some reason, it’ll ask for your password regardless of whether that’s really the problem or not. Don’t keep entering the password every time, because that’s not the problem (click Cancel instead, and take the account back online afterwards).
Some ISPs refuse connection attempts if they are too frequent, for example, or limit the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed from the same IP address, or there may be too many messages on the server and Mail times out before the server responds, or there might be a problem with the network, or there might be a problem with the server...
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
What’s the time interval chosen in Mail > Preferences > General > Check for New Mail? If it’s set to Every minute, try changing it to Every 5 minutes.
Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
You may also want to check with the provider of this account in case they’ve made some changes recently that could have a bearing on this.

  • Java Applet Constantly Asks for Authentication

With have a ADF application on Weblogic 10 that has occasional access to a Java applet. The Java applet is loaded whenever it's needed and not loaded whenever it isn't in a facet. The applet is currently in the public_html/applet folder.
When we set the SSL configuration to requiring a client certificate, when the Java applet loads, it'll constantly ask for a client certificate even though the user already presented the client when hitting the website:
Request Authentication Identification required. Please select certificate to be used for authentication.
This is annoying to users and the Java Applet doesn't need authentication. Is there any way we can disable the authentication or remove the prompt?
    Here's the embedded applet code:
    <applet height="1" width="1" code="applet.Applet.class"archive="/app/applet/SApplet.jar" /><param name="permissions" value="all-permissions"/></applet>
    Things I've already tried:
    1) Setting the Applet up on HTTP instead of HTTPS; I get a warning about mixed content and still get the authentication pop-up.
    2) Created a minimal applet that only types out "HELLO WORLD" in the console, still get the authentication pop-up

However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID, verify the changes, enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone".
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, verify it once again, delete the iCloud account from your device and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

  • OS X Mail. Asks for password every time...

Mail app, asks for an account password everytime I relaunch it, restart or reconnect to the internet. Only asks the password for whatever account is the bottom one in preferences. If i go to preferences and check the account info the password field is just blank, I reenter and no luck, it cleans it again if I disconnect, restart or relaunch the app. I had to go as far as to register a new mail acc and place it at the bottom in preferences and just cancel every time the password prompt pops up. Its really annoing.

Launch Keychain Access, Keychain First Aid, and repair your login.keychain, repair permissions, restart, and see if that fixes things.
