Here's my trouble: set up my linksys router ~ a year ago,...

Here's my trouble: set up my linksys router ~ a year ago, all is fine. I recently wanted to set up WEP security. I go to the router's web-based setup page, go to wireless security, pick WPA personal, TKIP, and enter a WPA Shared Key. Voila. However, now I cannot connect. When I try to connect it can't seem to get past "authentication", and times out. I'm not asked for a password or key at any point. Suggestions?
Thanks!

how old is your wireless computer? if you are not asked for the network key that means that the computer is recognizing the other saved networks on your computer. go to the choose a wireless network screen(right click on wireless network icon on the bottom right side of your screen and click on view available wireless network). click on the "change advanced settings" option on the left side of you screen.after that click on "wireless networks" tab then under preferred networks box below remove all the preferred networks that you see there. even if you see your network remove it as well..and after that try to connect to your network again...
sometimes those preferred networks blocks you to connect to a wireless network...

    online help and phone help has been less than helpful,  anyone have any Ideas?

    Ok I found " Installing the liksys wireless router with a westell 6100 modem" in the verizon troubleshooting guides. printed the instructions so I would'nt forget. step 1 open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address field.  PROBLEM it comes up with a login screen that I don't know how to sign into. tried the obvious stuff. cannot get past the login screen. I knew this sounded to easy to be true. anyone have any ideas?

    Your install disk must look like this
    and not like this.
    Those gray disks are machine specific and will only work with model of Mac that they shipped with.

  • Real Trouble Setting Up New WRT160N Router...Help Needed

    Current configuration is as follows:
    Motorola DSL modem paired with a Netgear Wireless-G router. Works fine, I have a connection.
    There is a problem, though, accessing the router's browser interface. This has happened since I reformatted my PC from Vista back to XP Pro SP3. My computer came with Vista. The drivers for my "1394 Network Interface" are generic, and I am afraid that although the blinking green light fuctions when an ethernet cable is connected (router to PC), somehow something is not right. The router access address is not working (192.168.2.1). Perhaps I am entering it wrong? Do I need a port number? I run my PC wirelessly to the internet via a Netgear wireless PCI card that I have installed. It works fine.
    My objective is to set up/configure my new Linksys/Cisco Wireless-N router (WRT160N). After I insert the included CD to begin the setup process, the setup process itself fails due to an error. The setup program tells me that it is unable to detect an ethernet port, and to enable it if it is disabled. Well, I do have one, and it has a driver, albeit probably not the correct one. But it is there, and the setup program won't let me continue because it can't see it. Here is where the fun begins.
    I have already tried reinstalling the ethernet driver. I downloaded a PC information program like CPU-Z and it revealed my ethernet connector's manufacturer whose name escapes me at the moment. Since the PC came with Vista, I cannot readily find any XP drivers that will suit it. In a desperate yet feeble attempt I downloaded and paid for a driver-updater program, to no avail. My motherboard is an ASUS NodusM3. I have also tried to connect the WRT160N to my PC to check for any viable communication. None.
    So in a nutshell I can't get the router's setup program to believe that I have a viable ethernet connection, in which case I may not because I can't get the PC to run off the router via an ethernet cable. I can't even access  the router via the browser. In this case will I need new drivers? If so, where do I find them? How can this issue be resolved. It really sounds like a driver issue to me.

    The router uses no drivers.  Connect at 192.168.1.1 not .2.1.  Reset router by pressing reset button for 30 seconds.  Release and wait 10 seconds, and power cycle.  Connect to the correct IP of 192.168.1.1. via cable.

  • Please help re-set up my linksys e1000

    I set up my linksys e1000 years ago and haven't had a problem.  Yesterday, it was accidentally unplugged.  Now it no longer works and I do not have the CD.  How can I get it set up again?  Please be specific because I am pretty clueless here.
    Thank you!

    If you do not have the cd then you will have to go for manual troubleshooting. You need to identify whether you have cable or dsl internet service, Then you may follow the steps found on the links below depending on what type of internet connection you have:

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem and Linksys router

    If anyone is having a hard time getting these three to work together to get on-line, I know your pain. I've spent the better part of two days trying to get these devices to talk to each other. After hours spent trying different combinations and little to no help from Verizon and Linksys I have finally gotten my DSL up and running through my Linksys router. I post this in hopes that someone doesn't spin their wheels like I have been doing over the past few days. Here's what I did to get them to work:
    1. Reset both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    2. Unplug the router and the modem
    3. Connect an ethernet cable from your Apple to the Westell modem and power it back on
    4. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser of choice. The username should be "admin" (w/o the quotes) and password should be "password" (again no quotes)
    5. It will ask you to update your username and password
    6. Under the CONFIGURATION heading select VC CONFIGURATION and click on EDIT
    7. Make sure that both PROTOCOL and MODE are set to BRIDGE
    8. Click on SET VC and then click OK when asked if you want to reset for new configuration to take affect
    9. Once again power off the modem for about a minute then power it back up
    10. Login again with the login you created above and go to the STATUS/ABOUT column and write down the MAC address
    11. Set it to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan Modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Write this down and keep it so you can access your modem in the future.
    12. Save the settings. You will lose communication with the Westell at this point. Once again, power down the modem for about a minute.
    13. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem into the Internet port on the Linksys router and then connect your Apple to the first ethernet spot
    14. Turn on both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    15. With your browser (Safari or Firefox) type in 192.168.1.1. Under SETUP go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE and enter the MAC address you wrote down for your Westell modem earlier and then save the settings
    16. Make sure you are in DHCP mode and not PPPoE
    17. Save, exit, and you should be on-line
    That was a lot more difficult than it had to be. I certainly didn't get this from the support folks from Linksys or Verizon...a lot of trial and error and investigating on-line. I hope this saves you from the headaches I experienced.

    Feedback for Linksys:
    In the Linksys Help system "Easy Answers" there's the question "How can I set up a Linksys router with DSL Internet?" This is what I used to try and solve my Internet connection problem.
    The Answer says "Most DSL providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) ..." and goes on to explain how to set up the router for PPPoE. However, my service (AT&T/Yahoo high speed internet) uses DHCP. That meant I spent several frustrating hours trying to get it to work with PPPoE.
    The Answer would have been better if it first explained how to tell if you have PPPoE or DHCP (see the reply from vness above, it's an excellent explanation), and then linked to the appropriate setup instructions.
    Thanks for the help!!!!

  • Linksys router no longer works with Westell 6100 modem

    Hi all,
    I came back after a 3 month work absence (and many days power outages, according to the neighbors), to find that my system can no longer connect to the internet using the Verizon Westell 6100 modem to a Linksys wrt54G router to 2 PCs!
    I reset the Westell modem and directly connected the PC to it and THAT works okay, but put the router back in the mix (so I can connect my other PC) and nothing works!
    I have read on this forum about 'Bridgeing" the Westell modem but nothing about setting up the router.
    Can someone PLEASE give me explicit instructions on how to:
        1.)  set up the Westell modem in this "Bridge" mode,
        2.)  Set up the Linksys router to work with the modem again??
        3.)  Tell me why the old setup no longer works, did verizon change something for this modem?
    Thank you VERY much for your help in this matter!
    SUE  ;>)

    the router has two connections.  one is called a WAN and that is a wide area network, and it means the internet in your case.  and one is called a LAN, local area network.
    what you saw means - that the way you connect to your internet is through PPPoE, a username and a password.
    and then way your LAN connects is DHCP,  how all of your local computers connect.  This is important, because after you bridge the westell, you will be setting your Linksys up for PPPoE connection, and NOT DHCP.      if you don't do this step, then you will never connect.
    that is fine, and normal.  if you follow the instructions at the link provided - you will be able to connect real easily.
    you will want to bridge the westell just follow the instructions for "If your Westell uses the red and black Verizon firmware:"

  • [SOLVED] Setting up a DSL router?

    Hello there.
    I am having trouble setting up my DSL router with Archlinux. It is currently running with Vista and has all the correct settings already configured. I am unsure of how to properly set it up and have tried various configurations which resulted in pppoe-start timing out, sometimes with an error. I have two network cards (One integrated into my Asus A8V motherboard and the other a 3com.) I am not sure which is eth0 and which is eth1 but I set rc.conf to eth0 and tried both.
    The DSL router is a Dynalink RTA1320 which I believe runs a version of linux with a 2.4.x kernel.
    Isn't including the login and DNS addresses when running pppoe-setup unneccesary as the router is already set up with them? I have setup the router's IP address (192.168.1.1) as the default gateway.
    Last setting tried was:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    routes=(!gateway)
    I have also tried routes=(gateway).
    Any advice?

    Thankyou everyone for your help. I re-installed Arch ("oh those newbies!") and then went straight to configuring rc.conf without using pppoe-setup. I have configured rc.conf like so:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond dhcpd)
    My 3com network card's module was already listed first in the modules for Linux to load (Google helped me find out what my card's module is.) Also, http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=45065 was helpful.
    I rebooted with the router plugged in. No error message came up after NETWORK as it started. Ping www.google.com worked!

  • I have an "old" Apple ID set up 13 years ago.  Apple has now gone to using email address as the apple ID.  I have apps to update and they ask for old ID.  it does not exist.  How can I get the ID on the app changed to the new apple ID

    I set up an apple id many years ago when itunes was established.  Within the past year or so, Apple has changed to using email address as user id.  My problem is that I have many applications that I can not update due to the fact that it is asking for the password of the old ID.  It does not exist anymore.  Any ideas on how to get the new apple id associated with the application without deleting the application.  Several of these apps I purchased.

    You can not merge accounts.
    Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

  • Trouble setting up my WRT54GS

    I've been having lots of problems setting up my Wireless Router Model #  WRT54GS. First of all I followed the steps here:
     http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3686
    I got to  the part where I was told to Access the Web-Based Setup Page here:
     http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3676
    I attempted to enter the router's IP address using the default "192.168.1.1" but I had no luck; only a Page not found message.  Afterwards I attempted to reset the router by holding the Reset button for 30 seconds (  I actually tried holding it longer on a 2nd attempt cause I noticed no changes in the behavior of the lights). After repeated attempts at resetting it to the default, I could still not access the Web Base Setup Page using the default address. I then attempted to check the router's IP address using the following instructions:
     http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3997
    I completed the step of Checking if the Computer is Set to DHCP exactly as I was instructed but I could not complete the step "Checking the Router's IP Address." After typing "ipconfig/all" and pushing enter in the MS DOS prompt, I discovered I did not have a Default Gateway address. So I then followed the instructions here:
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4736
    After running the "ipconfig/release" and then running "ipconfig/renew" I received an Error Message that said "An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
    I want to reiterate that I checked, double and then triple checked to make sure that I followed the steps in the Checking if the Computer is Set Up to DHCP section correctly. All the right boxes are checked. There was no where else to go with the help from there so I came to the forums.  Please help. I would really like to get my wireless connection working in my home.
    Thank you,
     CWood834

    Your WRT54GS should work with your SB5101 modem when the WRT54GS is reset to factory defaults, however, in some cases, you might also need to "clone" the MAC address of your computer into your WRT54GS.  (Note:  If you clone the MAC address of your computer, be sure to use the same computer that provides a working Internet connection when wired directly to the SB5101.)
    To fix your system, please do the following:
    First, reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
    If you get this far without problems, then power down your entire network.  Leave your computer wired to the WRT54GS.   Next, using an ethernet cable, connect the ethernet port of your SB5101 to the Internet port of the WRT54GS.  Do not connect anything to the USB port of the SB5101.  Power up your modem and allow it to fully boot (1-5 minutes).  Power up the WRT54GS and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).  Power up your computer.  Try to get on the Internet.  If this does not work, temporarily turn off your computer software firewall, and try again.  If you still have trouble, power down your entire network again.  Temporarily disconnect the SB5101 from the WRT54GS.  Login to the WRT54GS and clone the MAC address of your computer into the router.  Exit your browser and power down your entire network.  Reconnect the SB5101 to the WRT54GS.  Power up your network and try again to connect to the Internet.  It should work.
    If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead. Report back with this problem
    If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. Report back with this problem.
    If you need additional help, please state the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
    Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Having trouble setting up my AirPort

    I'm not tech-savvy in the least bit, so I need a lot of help right now! I'm trying to connect my Mac Book Pro to the AirPort. It's created a network but will not connect to the internet at all.
    I'm having trouble understanding what I'm exactly supposed to connect the AirPort to. I have the powercord plugged in. What else is necessary?
    I'm assuming that I'm using it as standalone wifi

    My roommates have a linksys router and I have no idea how it's set up. It's in my roommate's room. Everyone else has a PC and I get knocked off several times a day with the error message "Connection has timed out" and I have to reset the Internet just to get connected again. It only happens to me. I thought maybe my own network would be a lot easier for me to use. I called Apple Support and they said given my circumstances, I'd have to find my phone cable to conncet to a modem that will connect to the AirPort. Does this sound about right?

  • Having trouble setting up my website. It's probably a silly mistake.

    So I've registered a domain and hosting plan with A Simple Orange which had a pretty good deal since I had a coupon for 20% off. I've tried using Joomla to manage my website, but I couldn't get the hang of it. So I'm trying out iWeb 09' now and just having trouble setting it up. I've gone to me.com and added my website and added the CNAME correctly I hope. Here is a picture. http://imgur.com/XI8Lw.png
    Next I opened iWeb and setup MobileMe in the preferences panel. I've tried publishing the information from iWeb to my website, but my home page doesn't change. You can see here at RyanSchefer.com that it's just plan

    No. Your CNAME setting is not correct. The CNAME and web.me.com are correct with web.me.com being your host. However, your domain name is incorrect - don't understand why you have put mobileme before it? You just enter either your domain name on its own so domain.com or you need to set up two separate CNAME entries, one being for www, CNAME, web.me.com and then one being @, CNAME, web.me.com. The @ stands for your domain name and the www is your sub domain.
    Try altering this and it should work okay.

  • Having trouble setting up email accounts in the mail app?

    Hi Apple community,
         I am having trouble setting up my email accounts with the osX mail application. I have two accounts, an outlook and my college email through google. When I try to add the outlook account the prompt says that it cannot connect to the server and when I try my college mail i get the following prompt.
    "Trying to log in to the Exchange server “autodiscover-s.outlook.com” failed. Make sure the email address and password you entered are correct, then click Continue."
    Please note that my college account is run by gmail and ends in murraystate.edu
    Thanks, Will.

    Hey will,
    okay for your college email. Heres what you do.
    Try adding your email and wait for the message to come up
    Trying to log in to the Exchange server “autodiscover-s.outlook.com” failed. Make sure the email address and password you entered are correct, then click Continue."
    Once it does, you will notice 2 extra boxes One says username and the other password. You will notice that the username will not have @murraystate.edu
    Add this and continue and this should now be added as an email account and should be able to receive emails as normal.
    For your outlook emails, I would recommend using the following article to set it up. It is fairly straightforward.
