What software do I need to create high-res. PDFs in Mac OS 9? Where can I get it?

Mac OS 9 and Quark XPress 4 were very respectable in their time, and can still do a fine job of making PDF files. Nothing at all wrong with a balanced old computer doing the same job it always did.
Where it becomes problematic is if you want to change anything. Because the chances of being able to get hold of software compatible with your system are now quite small. Virtually nobody, and no big companies, are selling stuff for Mac OS 9 any more. (They aren't even selling stuff for much more recent versions of Mac OS X).
But amazingly, Adobe still do offer the Adobe PostScript driver for Mac OS 9 on their web site, here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=pdrv&platform=mac
You can use versions of Acrobat up to 5.0.5.
If you have Acrobat 4.0, make sure it is updated to 4.0.5, as the Distiller in 4.0.0 was really rather broken. Unfortunately this does not seem to be available any more as a download.

If Mac go to print menu (instead of going to Save As.. and choosing save as PDF)
click on the PDF Button in Print Menu.
Choose Adobe PDF
wait for first menu to come up choose Highest quality (equivelent to job options in Distiller) click okay
Next choose desired name or leave as is. and brwose to desired location to save
Choose save.
When you open the PDF in Acrobat or Reader it will be the best quality PDF you make and view.

How do i create high res pdf from psd file?

I've been searching endlessly for this answer however I cant get the answer. My commercial printer is requesting a high resolution pdf file, and i created my artwork in photoshop 2. Can anyone tell me how to create a high res pdf with this file? Someone told me I need to purchase acrobat 9, however from research I've conducted there are no tutorials to achieve this either, and $500 is a little steep for a waste of time

What do you mean by "Photoshop 2"? Are you referring to Photoshop CS2?
If Photoshop CS2, then you have been given the proper instructions.
If the option shown is unavailable to you, then your Photoshop installation is scrogged. Reinstall it.

Why does Illustrator CS 4 high res pdf ask for linked images?

I have saved high res pdfs (press quality) from Illustrator CS4 directly, and when I sent these pdfs to the printers, they ask me to supply them the linked images, otherwise they could not view the entire file completely. I thought the high res pdf setting would automatically embed images, could anyone please help me?? Our printers are waiting for explaination urgently and the images are very very large to be transferred overseas online. Thank you!!

If you made a PDF which is "print ready" there should be no issue, this is given that the printer informed you as to what "Print Ready" was by their workflow standards. The only time I would need to go back to a client for source files which were embedded into a PDF is if there were color mode issues (RGB image needed to convert to CMYK with certain profile) or if client PDF produced without required bleed. If you have exercised due diligence and the PDF is in fact "Print Ready" the printer may not be used to working with PDF files that are truly print ready. I have sent PDF files to printers who absolutely wanted to open the PDF in Illustrator and have all source/linked files because they were used to getting all end user files, not press ready PDF files. Once I spoke with the Prepress operator and let him know that I went through the PDF and made sure the file was exactly separated as it should print, and he should be able to send it straight to his RIP, then everything was fine.
Prepress people get used to dealing with designers who don't know how to do anything execpt make a moch up of what they want and print it out on their own ink jet printer. The actual file they send to the printer may need to be completely retooled in order to separate correctly for the printing process.

I don't know a way to do it through Muse, but if you have Acrobat you can export your Muse as HTML to your local disk then have Acrobat make a PDF out of it.

High Res PDF 4 color process printing problems

I'm using CS4. Our printer asks for files to be submitted as a high res PDF. When we have files printed digitally, the graphics look great, no problems. When we have files printed on the 4 color press, we have problems...i.e., white dots in the color portion of our logo (which the printer told me was the result of a black screen over the logo)...btw, there is no black screen over the logo, so I don't know what he's talking about.
My point is...I don't think there is anything wrong with the graphics, but maybe I'm not saving the files correctly to send to the printer.
I know this is a question that has probably been asked and answered a hundred times, but what options do I need to select when saving as a high res pdf for 4 color process printing? Also, should those options be different if I'm having something printed digitally?

Exact settings depend on the printer. Most commercial printers these days prefer file transparencies intact. The best setting to use in that instance is PDF/X-4. PDF/X-3 and PDF/X/1a are other choices for commercial print, but both of these outputs flatten transparency.
It is interesting that you don't have problems with digital printing. A common issue is the "Yucky Discolored Box" syndrome. This can occur if you have a drop shadow over top of a vector color fill. When you have this there is raster information adjacent to vector information. Digital presses may treat the raster and vector differently, and sometimes there is an unwanted color shift in the printed result (it's not something you see on-screen).
But if you're having success with the digital printing I wouldn't worry about that at this point. If you need more specific input concerning your file, you might want to post the file or a screen shot so the regular posters here can get handle on the logo problem.
Regarding settings for digital printers, it's best if the printer suggests the settings. Some quick print RIPs prefer RGB input, in which case you would convert to RGB when you output the PDF.

How do you creating a B/W high-res pdf?

I created a full page full color ad in InDesign CS3, we decided to switch to a B/W ad instead. How can I create a high-res B/W pdf?
I looked throught the different choices when I "Export a High Quality PDF" but didn't seen anything about B/W.

Creating a high res pdf from a tiff.

I have a tif with following dimensions: 38.74 cm x 28.85 cm at res 300ppi.
Now this going to be printed on canvas that is 6.43meters x 5.77meters, I will adjust the dimensions with a frame so I do not need to stretch the image in any direction.
I have placed this image in indesign and illustrator and generated a high quality print (PDF) with dimensions 643 mm x 577 mm (as printing company works at 10%).
This is a close up of the image:
There is pixelation.
My questions are
Is the original tiff resolution not enough, it is quite a high res! If this is the case what size and res image do I ask my photographer to produce.
Or do I accept the fact that there will be pixelation?
Can I do anything in photoshop, Illustrator to combat this problem?
As I will be doing more of these prints (sumner, NZ container ART project), I need to create a document with minimum specs, what do you think these specs should be.

1) If you plan on working in centimeters then you should work with ppc not ppi. If you are use to ppi then work in inches, it is much easier then trying to convert between the two systems.
2) (I am use to inches therefore thats what my example will be)
Your specs convert (approx. 25.32" x 22.72")
25.32 x 300ppi = 7596px
22.72 x 300ppi = 6816px
A 25.32" x 22.72" @300ppi = 7596px X 6816px
The number is pixels is what is required in order for your image to not be pixelated. Technically you may get away with 150ppi but I usually stick with 300ppi just out of habbit.
Remember that TIFF images are raster images and therefore, you need to be aware of its pixel size when doing any printing.
When scaling up an image, the computer must make up the missing data so you can only scale just so much before seeing its defects.
This information only applies to raster images and not vector data.

Is it possible to create a script to produce a high res and low res pdf and jpeg from Indesign at the same time

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is a way to automate a long process I have to do to create assets for my job.
I have a single page InDesign 6 file which I have to output three ways:
A low res pdf without bleed or trims
A high res pdf with bleed and trims
A low res jpeg downsized to 2% of original size.
If anyone knows if this is possible I'd love to hear from you.

Automation requires creating your own IDML script for output. Scroll down on this page to the section on Scripting resources. The text is a bit confusing. It says InDesign CS5 Scripting resources, but then the paragraph for that section says the PDF files are for CS6. I haven't read through these, I just found them by searching for "indesign automation". It does say in part that is can be used for preparing files for printing, so once you figure it out, it should be a single click option to do all three steps.
You can do them now with the menus you have, assuming you also have Acrobat Pro installed. With any document open, choose File > Adobe PDF Presets, and choose either from the prebuilt defaults, or create your own in the Distiller. However, I don't see a way in the Distiller settings to choose whether or not to include bleed and marks, so I'm not really sure how you'd have them on for one and not the other. As far as JPEG output, that can be chosen under Export. You get a choice to set a resolution and JPEG quality level, but not a size, so the output will be the dimensions of the document.

Possible to create medium res .pdf file with InDesign CS5?

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to create a medium res .pdf file with InDesign CS5?
I'm working with a client and have been sending him both high res and low res files of a catalog project. High res .pdf is 12.8MB and low res is 1.2MB. He is asking whether I can create something in between the two, say somewhere around 6 to 8 MB.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

PDFs do not have a resolution. The graphics within do, however..
Look at the downsampling settings and experiment until you get what you want.

Can not create hi res pdf in Acrobat Pro v9 - distiller

I am having problems creating a high res PDF in Acrobat Pro 9.0, it looks like distiller will not remember or accept that I am selecting hi res definitions before I print from Quark v6.0.

Why do my high resolution pdfs have thin white lines all over them?

When I make high res pdfs to send to the printer, they often have thin white lines in them that seem to be very visible when they are displayed in email. This panicks my clients. When the files are opened in Acrobat, they look OK most of the time, but sometimes they still have the white lines. What causes this and how can I make it STOP!!! It is driving me and my clients nuts.
I am using Acrobat 8 Professional on a iMac OSX 10.6.8. My files are pretty standard for print pubs. They usually contain type and images, and the images get the white lines where the text boxes are in the source file. It is maddening.

I forgot to say that I am creating source files in AI CC if that makes a difference, but I have had this problem in the past with previous versions of AI.

Export to PDF (print) and choose the press setting. If you need crop marks and bleeds, add them in the marks and bleeds pane of the export dialog.

Script to save out PDFs in High Res and Low Res and name them accordingly?

I'm on Indesign version 9.1. I previously had a script for this and have since had my mac wiped and re-installed (big company rules). So, here I am asking if someone can help me again..
Basically I have to create artwork and nearly every time I have to export it as a 150dpi LOW RES version and then a 300dpi HIGH RES version with time marks, bleed, etc. I then end the file name with either LR.pdf or HR.pdf. I have presets for these and obviously, it's not the worst thing in the world having to scroll down menus, etc but this is maybe up to 50 times a day. I used to be able to select an icon on my desktop (or wherever) then I used Indesign scripting and automator on the mac to press a kay command and it'd open the document, then save it out as the two designated PDFs, then close it.
Can anyone help me on this?
I can probably search on here for the previous thread asked and the script given to me...

Why does "Print Booklet" from Indesign CS5.5 only create low res pdf? How do I get High Res for Offs

Long time ID user in Agency. Created a simple 4 page brochure in CS5.5 ID. Facing pages for cust size 11x17 half fold document.
Generating the pdf for Press and HQ Print renders a nice high res document, but the print booklet feature only produces a skinny low res version. Tried to mess with the printer settings, but the result is the same with a skinny low res document.
I didn't want to recreate the brochure as a two page manually imposed as I like the option of being able to add more pages in increments of four of course. Plus it's just silly to do that when ID is supposed to handle it for me.
I worked around it this time by printing to .ps output then distilling, and then splitting the document so printer could have a "front" and "back" 11x17. But this seems kludged big time. This has to be a bug unless I am missing something.

You probably never changed the default settings in the PDF printer properties. In the print booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button, then the Setup button at the bottom of the Print Dialog that pops up, choose the PDF printer and click on Preferences. Reset the default reset the default settings to the ones you really want to use, or reset them in Windows... Control Panel > Devices and Printers... Double-click the PDF printer, then from the print queue dialog, Printer > Properties... General tab and clcik the Preferences button.
