Hermes 650 system locks up with 2GB RAM, 1GB OK

I have a Hermes 650 system that keeps locking up when system is upgraded to 2GB RAM.  System runs fine with 1GB RAM installed.  I tried 2 different brands of 1GB sticks, but same problem.

This is a very old barebones, unfortunately memory support is described as "up to 2GB" and as 1GB sticks weren't commonplace at the time, its possible it might just not work.
1GB should be plenty enough for what this system can handle though.
Have you tried testing the sticks with >>Memtest86<<?

  • I have a macbook with 2 512 mb ram, and wanting to at least replace one with 2gb ram. Do I need to reinstall OS If I do that?

I have a macbook with 1 gb ram, 2 rams with 512 mb. I am planning to replace one with 2gb ram. Do I need to reinstall OS if I replace one of them? Please help. Thanks.

If you want to upgrade your RAM it;s very easy on most MacBooks with the removable battery. We'll need to know the model to further advise you. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
    1,1 (Early 2006) can handle 2gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007) can handle 3gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM

  • Performance with 2GB RAM and SSD

I own a late 2010 MBA, 13" baseline model with 2GB RAM, w/SSD.  I am using Snow Leopard, and it runs perfectly.  I would like to upgrade to ML to sync with ipad, but a concerned with performance.  I use my MBA for word processing, emails, and internet surfing, including occasional movie downloads.  I cannot upgrade the RAM on this model.  I would therefore very much appreciate if someone who has run the latest versio of ML on this model can inform me of its performance w/2GB RAM and an SSD drive.  (I know it can run; I want to know how it runs).  Thanks very much!

Just went through the same situation with my 2006 iMac. Technically my memory tops out at 3gigs, but I can get 4 in there if I insist (though the machine won't take full advantage).
After a considerable amount of research, and hearing some horror stories of some folks who dove straight into Lion on older machines, I opted on upgrading memory to 3gig, backing up all my data, then running a clean install of Snow Leopard. I then reinstalled all my stuff, followed with a run of Monolingual (a shareware program that removes unnecessary languages and builds), then ran OnyX (another shareware) to run scripts and check/repair permissions.
Works fantastic. Machine is operating perfectly on 10.6.8 and with the memory upgrade and clean drive its running faster than ever. Definite new breath of life in the machine.
As per memory upgrade, I'd recommend going to Crucial. They're very Mac friendly, customer oriented, and reasonably priced. They have a small program you can download that scans your machine to determine the correct chip required, then brings you stright to an info and ordering page. I managed to get a 2gig chip with shipping for about $25. With the Snow Leopard upgrade total cost was under $60 for resuscitation.

  • Anyone can confirm that Lion runs as smooth as Snow Leopard with 2GB RAM?

    Hello,
I want to install Lion on my 1st gen Air, with 2GB RAM. With Snow Leo, sometimes i have to quit Safari because of the RAM is running low.
So i don't want to upgrade if Lion eats more RAM than Snow Leo.
Can anyone confirm that is it worth to install Lion on a laptop with 2GB RAM?
    Thanks

I have a late 2007 2.0GHz Macbook with 4GB of RAM. Snow Leopard ran beautifully on it ( I am a web developer and video editor ).
I clean installed Lion last week and it is very sluggish. It'll often hang and 'spinning beach ball' when doing the simplest tasks such as trying to scroll through a web page, switch applications, open a print dialogue box, etc.
The new UI, animations, and some of the new features of Lion are nice, but I'm considering switching back to Snow Leopard. As a power user on an "older" machine, Lion just doesn't cut it. Depending on what you use your laptop, you might have a fantastic experience with Lion. It certainly takes more video memory, so it's likely newer machines won't struggle with it at all. my concern is that the simple elements of the OS have problems running on my machine, meaning one of two things: 1) Lion is built to run well on newer machines with newer hardware or 2) Lion is built poorly. It seems more likely the former is true. in either case, if you have a "base" machine like Macbook or Mac Mini 2008 or older i'd say stick with SL. otherwise upgrade to your heart's content.

  • Slow with 2gb RAM?

I clicked on microsoft word and it took almost 9 seconds for it to load.. Hows that possible.. i figured it would take only 2 seconds for a program to load.... its not just word, i remember watching steve jobs work on his Mac at the San francisco forum, he;d click on an icon/ program and poof it would open.. no waiting period.. is my computer slow.. or somethingh wrong with the RAM, the system profiler does show 2GB of RAM.. so what could be the problem.?

True, Office is slow due to it running under rosetta, but 9 seconds is about double what Word 2004 takes to load on my system. You may wish to run through the suggestions the previous poster mentioned. Also be sure your office is up to date. I've applied all patches to mine, and the performance of Office 2004 has went up dramitically (possibly due to their patches, but most likely attributed to Rosetta tweaks Apple has been sneaking into the Tiger updates). At one point I dropped Office and Photoshop CS2 al together for OpenOffice and GIMP, however after 10.4.7 I realised I preferred the products from Adobe and Microsoft and went back and noticed Office and and CS2 performed much better and was completely tolerable this time around.
Anyhow, make sure everything, including Office is updated. Also try those suggestions to improve disk performance.
As side note, my hard drive is 7200 RPM v 5400 RPM, so that could make a slight difference. Though I do have another MacBook with a 5400 RPM and again Office is not that slow to load, but still takes a good 6 seconds.

  • Will leopard work with the current 2.16ghz mac book with 2gb ram?

hey just a quick question new to the whole mac thing and was just wanting to know will i be able to upgrade to leopard on my white mac book 2.16ghz with 2gb of ram and 120 gb harddrive?
    will it run smoothly?
    thanks simon

The terms of use actually says:
"Speculations or rumors about unannounced products."
I would take that to mean questions and speculation about products which have been announced would be okay. Stuff like "Do you think Leopard will be able to do this or that" would seem to be okay.
I think Apple's intent is to keep speculation and/or rumors about products which may not even exist to a minimum.
Granted, no one, apart from developers under a NDA, have experience with Leopard... and even they don't know what the "secret" features are... but I think we're okay chatting about that stuff. They have a major OS overhaul coming in just a few months. I can't imagine they wouldn't expect people to chat about it... beyond what they have posted.

  • 2010 Macbook Air with 4GB RAM or 2011 Macbook Air with 2GB RAM

So I am looking a the following 2 Reforebished Macbook Air models:

So my main question is which is better, the core 2 duo with 4GB of memory and 128GB of storage, or is the intel core i5 with 2GB of memory and 64GB of storage better? There is only a $10 differnce so the price doesnèt matter to me.

i would go with the one with more RAM and larger SSD.
Simple reason - you can't upgrade it in the future.
Sure the other one has a faster processor but what's the use of having a faster processor if you only have 2GB of RAM?
The other one is newer, but again, you can't upgrade it.
That's the reason why it's also cheaper........

  • Just bought a Macbook pro 17" 2.16 with 2gb ram and 500gb 5400 HD. IT RUNS VERY SLOW, even with fresh install of X 10.6, what do I do?

So I just bought a great condition Macbook pro 17" with 2gb of ram, and the last owner upgraded the HD to a 500gb toshiba 5400rpm HD....the computer is VERY slow....when loading up anything it take forever, and watching video's freezes it for a few seconds then starts for a 1-3 seconds then freezes again....what can I do? I really like the laptop, but hate the performance...and I don't want to go buy another one....but I have considered a SSD....any idea's before I do that?
    Thanks.

How much hard drive space do you have left?
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop?  An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac.
Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options:  ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck.  You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is.  If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.
If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache.
    Safari/Empty Cache
Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top.  If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance.  Quit it by clicking the Quit Process button at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
Too little ram - max out your ram.

  • Will Final Cut Pro X work nicely on a late 2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM?

I want to get FCPX but I am not sure if it will be so good on this Macbook Pro... Will it work decently on it even with just 2GB RAM and a Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz and a 13" screen? I also have the lastest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Check here to see if your graphics card is supported. Core i5 is fine, 8 GB RAM is fine but more is better.
You will need fast external drives (FW800 or TB). FCP X has a fully functioning trial version.

  • Illustrator CS6 on iMac with 2GB RAM

How will CS6 perform on my iMac with only 2GB RAM?  Minimum requirement is 2GB but I have
concern it will be horribly slow.  Does anyone have experience with this?

    Hi inmanbs,
It would be great to have a hands-on AI CS6 from http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=illustrator&loc=en_us&promoid=DJDUV and use a free trial period of 30 days.
My experience shows that it is acceptable.

  • Xcode/eclipse C++ on 11" MacBook Air with 2GB RAM, OS X Lion and 64GB SSD?

Hey, I'm planning on getting a 11" MacBook air with a 2GB RAM, 64GB HDD and OS X Lion. I am also going to get a 500GB external HDD with it and I would just like to know if it would be good to run Xcode or eclipse on it so I can code C++? Please note that I will install Xcode/eclipse to the external HDD If that affects the performance? Thanks.

I have a MacBook Pro running Lion. I have both XCode and Eclipse. It should work fine.

  • IMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM

The Internet is frequently very slow.  I am hard wired to the TimeWarner Motorola cable modem, but also have a new router with 5 GHz that has a Firewire port.  Would my Internet speed increase substantially by hard wiring to the router by Firewire?
My MacBook with 4GB RAM is much faster via a wireless connection.
Thanks very much for any ideas or comments.

Unfortunately, connecting your iMac by Firewire directly to a router which then connects to the cable modem will Not increase the speed of your Interent connection relative to directly connecting your iMac to the cable modem.  Your iMac's network speed is at your ISP's delivered maximum directly through the cable modem.  All the router would add is the ability to share the cable modem's  output signal  among multiple connected computers. I believe you are experiencing the fact that the internal hardware (CPU, RAM, etc.) of your older iMac may be slower in processing the ISP's internet signal than your more powerful MacBook.
    Hope this helps:)

    Hi
There are two possibilities: either the RAM modules are faulty/damage/not compatible or one of the memory slots is damaged.
I think you should test every RAM module in each slot to discover the issue
