Hey, Phil, I still want Blu-ray!

I just read on another mac blog that Phil Schiller says that Mac customers no longer want Blu-ray.
Phil, I'm here to tell you I've been a Mac loyalist since 1991. In our household we have 5 mac portables, two iMacs, three iPhones, two iPads, I'm not sure how many iPods, and three entertainment centers using Mac Mini's as HTPC's...
Let me be clear: I would still LOVE to have Blu-ray on my desktops! IMO, if people have stopped asking for it, it's because they know you've largely never listened to your customer base on this issue, so why continue to plead?
I know, Phil's not going to read this and answer, but I feel better now!
Still love my Apples, though!

I want Blu-ray drives too, but I know it will never happen.
I have an external BR-writer on my Mac Pro, but nothing on my mini.
I don't love my Apples much any more. I also use FCP (v.7), but that's been a sad story too....
No-one from Apple reads this stuff, so we're pi**ing the wind, really.

  • Want Blue-Ray, is it supported?

    Hello,
I just want to play Blue-Ray disks, can a drive be added?
    Thanks
    Frank

In addition to a Blue Ray player you need HDMI out of your graphics card and and a monitor with HDMI input to view DRMed movie content.
There are NO Mac graphics cards currently available with the requisite HDMI out ports, and natively OSx is believed not to support Blue Ray .
For the most part with majority of current and available PC monitors you would gain little benefit from the extra lines of pixels anyway .
THIS IS the hype around Hi-Def.
It really just allows you to maintain clarity at larger screen sizes.
Upto around 24" screen size there is virtually no noticeable viewing difference or benefit over std definition in Europe at least where std definition is 625 lines anyway.
The audio quality may be better and more expansive however again you need HARDWARE beyond your Mac or PC ! to gain the benefit.
Blue Ray discs are much harder to copy (allegedly) and anyway this would certainly reduce quality and is illegal in most jurisdictions !
Further it is a fact that that Apple are following a business model along with much of the Telcomms industry that see delivery of more and more Hi-Def and other content via on demand Satellite, ADSL+ and cable pipelines
Like it or not the 4 ½" silver/golden disc days are numbered.
(Apple know this and have studiously sat of the fence watching the HDVD/Blue Ray battle take place at others cost !)
Going forward the future of the disc is going to be limited to Gaming and you will likely see it mainly built in to Gaming consoles and some PC systems also designed as gaming platforms.
If Snow Leopard does support Blue Ray/HDMI combinations its likely for gaming however there is no rush needed to incorporate what is already obsolete technology in the Mac platform or for that matter anywhere else.

  • Doing Blu-Ray (WITHOUT DVD Studio Pro!)

I'm frequently finding myself in a fix because of DVD Studio's ongoing lack of Blu-Ray support (clients wanting Blu-Ray - 5. Clients wanting HD-DVD - ZERO!) Anyway... my gripes aside, for the current project I am required to supply an auto-looping video graphics project being displayed on 60" plasmas running from a Blu-Ray player. So there's no proper 'authoring' to do as such, I just need to get the video file onto the disc, auto-start and seamlessly loop. Now in the early days of DVD I used to be able to do just this without using a heavyweight authoring program - as I recall it was a simple utility that came with the burner that allowed me to assemble a basic playable disc from pre-encoded assets.
Is there any utility out there that can allow me to offer a compromise until Apple pull their finger out? I looked at Roxio's Toast but I'm not sure whether this will do the job?
    Much appreciation everyone,
    Tom

You can actually now do very limited authoring without Encore on a Mac - but you MUST be using a Mac Pro to do it:
Panasonic now makes an internal ATA-connected BR burner for the Mac Pro:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/SW5582BK/
Toast 9 now has BR authoring capability - think of a scaled-down version of iDVD (it has extremely limited options) and they claim burned BR discs will now play on any set-top or PS3 player; previously a burned BR could only be played back on a computer (and sometimes on a PS3).
Using BootCamp you can purchase Roxio's DVDitPro HD which also has BR capabilities - this has a little more functionality than iDVD, but it's still not anywhere close to what DVDSP and lightyears away from Scenarist or Sony Blu-Print.
Full BR authoring on a Mac, i.e. DVDSP-5 is not even on the horizon yet as no formal announcement has come from Apple, and since Apple is not attending NAB this year it's a total crap-shoot as to when they plan on taking things to the next level.

  • Compatabillity of Blu-ray drive w/ my new desktop

Just purchased a Gateway LX 6810-01 and would like to install a Sony BDU-X10S 2X BD-Rom Blu-ray SATA Internal Drive as a second drive. Is it compatable and a direct fit or is a special setup required?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Looking at the the specs of that computer it looks like you are good as far as the computer goes BUT.... only remaining question would be your monitor. If you are wanting Blu-Ray to watch movies (only reason i think you would want a BR player). While it appears your video card is HDCP compliant the next question is what monitor are you attaching to the computer and is it HDCP compliant?

I want to burn a blu ray disc from PP CC 2014 and do not have the Encore application. Is there a way to do that?

Here's a free non-Adobe solution as well.  It's definitely got a steep learning curve compared to Encore, but from my understanding so far, it may also be more capable.  (And it's still being developed, unlike Encore which is dead software.)

Looks like you plan to use ps as a transport and iMac as an external display? First of all you need Hdmi to Display port converter or cable. The rest should be easy.

  • Blu-Ray and Pal Question - client wants us to make blu-ray

A client of mine wants their event shot in HD and final output as blu-ray.
They also want a third party to be able to watch the video in indonesia which is PAL territory if I'm correct.
    - should i assume that a blu ray player in indonesia will play a blu-ray video just fine without the pal / ntsc issues?
    - should we make a separate NTSC SD DVD of the video and tell them to buy the third party a NTSC DVD player to ship to indonesia along with a NTSC SD version of the video?
    Any advice or suggestions?
    thanks

There is no NTSC or PAL in Blu ray. European and Asian players play all BD resolutions and frame rates

  • Render Quality of still images for Blu Ray?

    Hello,
can anyone help me on how to control the quality of still images beeing rendered within Encore?
Transcoding is for film only and on my full HD Blu Ray it seems, that still images or diashows are
rendered in SD quality at best.
    Any hints appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Guenter

Hello and thanks for the quick replies and especially the welcome greetings.....
The images do match the resolution of the videos, they are all 1920x1080.
I created the images with Photoshop and next to JPG I also tried the PSD,
    but it made to difference.
They are not part of the videos, they are just pictures I've included using
the diashow function within Encore. There is no transcode menu available
for single images nor the diashow.
The default transcode settings - which are used for video only afaik - are
    also full hd, full quality.
    Any other ideas?
    Cheers,
    Guenter

  • Importing Blu-ray m2v file--over 3hrs and still 0% Completion

Running Encore CS3 on a Quad-core, 3.5GHz. I exported via Adobe Media Encoder from Premiere CS3, a 18 minute Blu-ray format video with PCM audio, using the Blu-ray preset.
I then tried to import these files into an Encore CS3 Blu-ray project. The video was at 0% progress when I decided to go out with the wife and kid for dinner. We did some shopping and returned 3 hours later. After all this time, the encode was still at 0%. CPU utilization was only 25% and not using all four of my cores.
How long is this encode supposed to take?
Seeing at it was going so slow, I cancelled it and I noted that the asset was there in the Project list, but when I put it on a timeline, the preview shows "Media Pending".
At any rate, I thought Premiere's Blu-ray encoder was supposed to put this file already in the native format. Why is it transcoding again? And why is it so slow on a 3.5GHz quad core?

  • I want to burn blu ray discs from FVPX, compatible mac burner.

I want to burn blu ray discs from FCPX projects. I note I should be able to but any thought on a mac compatible burner. Why is so difficult to find one??

I would recommend navigating to www.macsales.com, because they specialize in Macs they can point you to devices that should work with your computer. Please make sure you also have software for burning Bluray discs, i'd recommend Titanium Toast.

  • Want buy blu-ray burner for T410s

I would like to buy a blu-ray burner for my T410s.
Of course it has to have drive height of 9.5mm.
It should be able to burn double-layer DVDs DVD+R DL *.
It should be able to burn double-layer blu-rays BD-R DL with a speed of 2x or better.
If anyone has a definite information on the specs of such a drive, I would appreciate letting me know.
    Thanks
    Tom
*Note, there is a difference between DVD+R and DVD-R.

If I remember correctly, there was a T400 Blu-ray burner - quite expensive at the time - that should work.  The T61 version would not work, as it would have had a PATA not SATA.  I don't think it is made any longer, but there could still be some aorund.
    T61p, T400
    formerly x23, x40

  • I have the older rounded airport and want to connect it to a Sony Blu-Ray via a LAN cable. Is that possible?

I have the older rounded airport and would like to connect it to a Sony blu-ray player via a LAN. Any thoughts?

I assume that your Sony Blu-ray player is network-ready and has an Ethernet port ... correct? If so, there shouldn't be any reason why it couldn't be connected to the LAN (opposing arrows) port on the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to gain network/Internet access.
