Hey Sparc Gurus -- Help! (Java is slow on my Workstation)

I recently purchased a second hand Ultra 30 for doing Java development. The machine is seeemingly in good condition but runs very slow. My understanding was that the 296MHz Sparc II processor would be magnitudes faster than the P3-700 in my Thinkpad...was I wrong to think this?
Anyway, when doing GUI development with Forte, I'm finding the speed to be much slower on my Sparc workstation than it is on my Thinkpad. Both have 256MB RAM.
My question is, does the default install of Solaris 8 require tuning to get the Workstation to perform better? If so, how is it done? A friend told me the OS may be limiting utilization of the processor by any one process to 50%, does this sound reasonable?
I've loaded JDK1.4 and patched the system according to Hoyle. The 64bit JVM has been installed.
As an aside, the bar graph at the bottom of the CDE looks like it's pegging even when I do simple operations. The bottom half is blue and the top half red. What does this mean? Is the processor being 100% utiliized or only 50% utilized?
Your help is appreciated!

A Sparc II at 296MHz is actually going to be quite a bit slower than a PIII at 700MHz. Not sure where you got the reverse impression. Consider these spec.org benchmark results:
Dell Precision 420 @733MHz -> http://www.spec.org/osg/jvm98/results/res2000q2/jvm98-20000502-03335.g.html
Sun Ultra 60 @ 296MHz -> http://www.spec.org/osg/cpu95/results/res98q1/cpu95-980127-02362.html
Memory may be an issue- 256MB isn't all that generous for Forte plus Solaris. You might take a peek at paging rates and such as well as GC rates within Forte.
Some of the problem may be with the performance of Swing on Solaris 8 and your graphics subsystem. You might try to find tips for optimizing that.

    Hey guys, i am trying to slow down the velocity on a tittle in order people can read it properly. Any suggestions?

    speed = distance x time
    so, to slow down speed, your clip/title has to be 'longer'.

  • Why Java is slow?

    I am learning Java. I heard many people saying that Java is slow compared to other languages C,C++. What does that really mean?

    Java is run on top of what they call a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). When you compile your code, javac produces a class file which contains a byte-code that can be interpreted and run by JVM later on (using java command). So, your java program run on (controlled by) another progam (JVM), unlike C/C++ excutables, which are run on the hardware. This scenario ensures compatibility with any platform you run your Java code on.
    Basically it's like this :
    | Java Classes |
    |
    | | |
    | JVM for Win | | JVM for UNIX | | JVM for MacOS |
    | | |
    | Hardware |
    But, no matter what your friends say, Java is a pefrectly suitable for almost any program that you'd write :))

    hey  i need help with my ipod, i try to download facebook app and it wouldn't let me because it say ios 4.1 require and i dont have ios how do i get it ?  please i need help ASAP

    What generation of iPod touch do you have? If you don't know, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353
    If you have an first-generation iPod touch, it can only go to iOS 3.1.3 and hence will not run the Facebook app. If you have a second-generation iPod touch, see:

    Sorry, it appears you were scammed. The phone you have was replaced, either under warranty, or as an out of warranty replacement, & should have been returned to Apple. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous retailers will fix these phones, & then re-sell them. Your only option is to go back to whoever you purchased the phone from & confront them

  • Need help with a slow mid-2009 MBP

    Hello - I have read various threads on the subject of slow running MBP's and have attached Etrecheck results. I am running Yosemite and have the latest updates (as of today at least!). I don't seem to have any of the problem software that others have suggested removing - but am sure there is something I am probably missing. My MBP is going slower and slower by the day - especially if I want to use Lightroom, then it comes to a screeching halt. I do seem to be able to use Safari and Word at the same time, but they tend to get pretty slow after a time as well. Any and all recommendations greatly appreciated! Please note though, that I do not have the ability to upgrade to SSD at the moment, but maybe can manage new and increased RAM (I think my only options are to get 2 4x4's or a single 8?) if thats the only option. Cheers!

    First, get rid of "Memory Clean," which is at best useless. That alone might solve your problem. If not, see below.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Java Applet - slow response over WAN and fast on LAN

    Hi All,
    Using Tomcat we have a Java applet that runs very slow over the Internet but just the opposite on the LAN (fast). On our website we have a link that we click which initializes the application. it is very slow but if the same link is clicked on the LAN it is very fast in responding. We have a 10MB internet connection and even when testing with very little traffic after peak business hours we have same results.When closing the browser and reopening it is much faster the second time. This tells me it is being Cached. If I go to a system that has never accessed the applet we are very slow again. We are hosting this application for a 3rd party so we did not write the code. This company is finger pointing at Router and I am finger pointing at Java application itself maybe not being optimal.
    I am attaching "debug" info from Java Console. Can anyone identify any issues from this debug output or familiarity with this type issue. Your insight is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Geoff,
    Thanks for posting here.
    Have you checked your internet edge router ? and make sure there is no any speed limitation set on it , like QOS.
    You may also try the methods below:

    if you don't want to program in java dont, noone is forcing you. when java runs it will load up a vm and a library for it. that's the way it is. it may take a little longer then the equiv native app, but that's because the native app's vm and so on is ALREADY loaded (it's the OS).
    in summary: deal with it. it's not that bad. there are some very good examples of java desktop apps that work well; azereus being one, i'm sure there are others.

    undo 12 occurs at line X
    undo 11 occurs at line Y
    etc etc
    I need to be able to get this information without actually invoking the Undo last edit call.
    Im bringing the Java undomanager tutorial home but from what ive read it seems like impossible?
    Any and all help appreciated.

    This is what I have done in a similar situation. Back up your system and reinstall your OS. Then add your stuff back in and see how it runs. Just wondering how much RAM you are running?

  • Help, Java newbie a little over my head with LDAP

    I'm actually a network admin but I've been dabling in Java for a little while now.
    I am trying to write an app that will allow me to insert and remove attributes to entries in Active Directory.
    I have found some sample code which I have altered to make a "proof of concept" before I start on the actuall app I want.
    The problem I am having is writing into the AD. I can query entries with no error but when I try a modification I get an "DSA is unwilling to perform" LDAPException. I am pretty sure it's not a permissions issue but from reading stuff on here I am begnining to think that it may have something to do with SSL connections. There is commented out code below where I experimented with this but I was unable to connect the the AD when this was in. "unable to connect to the directory server error".
    If anyone can offer me any advice I would be most grateful.
    package LDAPTest;
    import netscape.ldap.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import com.novell.service.ndssdk.jndi.ldap.ssl.*;
    // Simple program to experiment with searching LDAP

    public static void main(String[] args)
    if(args.length != 6)
    System.out.println("Usage: java FilterSearch " +
    "<host> <port> "+
    "<authdn> <password> "+
    "<basedn> <filter> ");
    System.exit(1);
    String host = args[0];
    int port = Integer.parseInt(args[1]);
    String authid = args[2];
    String authpw = args[3];
    String base = args[4];
    String filter = args[5];
    String[] ATTRS = {"memberOf"};
    int status = -1;
    //SSL experiment that would not connect to the AD server.

    System.exit(status);
    public static void prettyPrint(LDAPEntry entry, String[] attrs, LDAPConnection ld)
    System.out.println("DN: " + entry.getDN());
    //Use array to pick attributes. We could have
    //enumerated them all user LDAPEntry.getAttributes
    //but this gives us control of the display order
    for(int i = 0; i < attrs.length; i++)
    LDAPAttribute attr = entry.getAttribute( attrs);

    System.out.println("----------------------");

    OK, I have learned a little about JNDI today and have attempted to implement this using JNDI instead.
    I am now getting the OperationNotSupportedException when attempting to add an attribute to an item in Active Directory.
    here's the code, can anybody who has managed to add data into AD help with this?
    cheers.

    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "ldap://hostname:389/");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, args[0]);
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, args[1]);
    try {
    // Create the initial directory context
    DirContext ctx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    // Ask for all attributes of the object
    Attributes attrs = ctx.getAttributes("CN=smstest0005,CN=MarimbaComputers,CN=Computers,DC=marimba,DC=local");
    for (NamingEnumeration ae = attrs.getAll(); ae.hasMore();)
    Attribute attr = (Attribute)ae.next();
    System.out.println("attribute: " + attr.getID());
    /* Print each value */
    for (NamingEnumeration e = attr.getAll(); e.hasMore();System.out.println("value: " + e.next()));
    // Specify the changes to make
    ModificationItem mod[] = new ModificationItem[1];
    mod[0] = new ModificationItem(DirContext.ADD_ATTRIBUTE,
    new BasicAttribute("memberOf", "CN=Tight VNC,OU=Staging Transmitter Channels,DC=marimba,DC=local"));
