You may be able to treat it like an external drive and use data recovery software on it, but it probably won't work because the system is telling you that the drive needs to be formatted before it is recognized.
If the problem is data corruption and there is no hardware-related problem on the iPod's hard drive, a Restore should fix the problem. But this will obviously erase the iPod's hard drive. -

just did the the new upgrade and now half of my songs are not playing. A screen appears and says you need to search for your music in folders. What the heck happen with this ? Anybody have any issues too?This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

My son has disabled his iphone 4 and it says it needs to connect to itunes. When I try to connect it, I get a message telling me that it can't connect because the iphone is lost. I tied erasing the phone on cloud but it still needs to conenct to itunes so this does not work. I have tried restoring the phone but partway through, the phone tries to connect to itunes again and I get the message that it is lost and the disabled message comes back up on the screen. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Did you make sure that iTunes can log into Apple Servers during the restore process?

Can you try another computer to restore from?
If this all does not work, you'll have to get your phone looked at by visiting an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider next to your place.

First try holding down the lock and home button for 15 seconds while your phone is plugged into a power source. If that doesn't work then plug it into your computer.

If there's not an iTunes disc with my L7 phone can I still download iTunes?
