HFS+, disk space, and weirdness

Hi all,
I leave my Mac Pro running continuously while it hosts several web applications and acts as a print and file server for my home network. Last week, I was gone for 6 days on vacation. When I returned home, I noticed a lot of weird stuff going on in every application I tried to execute, and I eventually discovered that my boot disk was out of space.
That's weird, I thought, because when I left I had about 120G of files on a 250G disk. What could have used all that space up in the meantime? I immediately started checking the obvious stuff (var/log, trashes, etc.) but found nothing amiss.
Here's where it gets weirder: Cmd-Info on the disk, or Disk Utility, or df at the command line, all show 240GB of capacity and 239.98 consumed. (I subsequently deleted a few large media files to get enough room for the system to run stably, but I'll ignore that slight reduction in used space.)
But if I go to the terminal and run at root:
/>sudo du -h -d 1 .
I get reports back showing total consumption of, basically, exactly what it was when I left, or around half the total disk. I CANNOT find what is making OS X think that the rest of the disk is totally used up.
Here's the output from df:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/disk0s2 233Gi 228Gi 4.1Gi 99% /
Output from du:
/>sudo du -d 1 -h .

After speaking with Applecare and getting no where, I decided to rsync the disk to another, empty, larger disk in hopes of creating a backup I could boot off of. Interestingly, rsync shows:
sent 241469882503 bytes received 25709573 bytes 18020041.94 bytes/sec
total size is 241347531673 speedup is 1.00
So it, too, sees all of this space being used!
I'm totally lost. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, this was totally it. I was ignoring the reports on disk usage under /Volumes figuring, incorrectly, that those were only reporting usage on other drives. However, I have a series of rsync launchagents that run scheduled backups, and at some point over the past week the physical targets must have been disconnected. Unfortunately, my scripts are smart enough to figure out that the target is gone.
I saw some discussion about this on the forum you linked, but no resolution. Has anyone figured out a way to reliably detect the existence of a mounted disk (and then abort a sync operation if it's not there)?

  • Relocated original files to desktop (on low disk space) and lost photos?

Help! My wife and I exchanged our vows on the Napali Coast and we lost our photos...
    2006 Macbook, iphoto06:
As I was importing our 200 photos from the hike, my computer warned me that I was running out of disk space and stopped before finishing the load. I regretfully opted to delete the photos from the camera as it imported (bummer). The photos were safe in my iphoto library when I returned the following day and cleared some disk space on my hard drive. I then imported the remaining photos and everything looked normal.
Here's where it gets weird. So I was looking at a photo and accidently deleted it from the iphoto library. I located the original file and reimported it, however the computer told me that I already had the photo in the library. I looked into help and followed the instructions to drag the rolls onto my desktop and reimport them into iphoto. I did this and consequently lost some 50 very special photos. Now the iphoto library had this giant gap filled with grey !!!'s where the photos were. I looked into the original rolls folders and found a number of the original files were now missing? Something obviously happened from me having moved the files from the originals folder to the desktop. When I returned to iphoto, I recieved a warning that I was running out of diskspace again and some of the recent changes may have been lost!
I have searched for the files according to their file numbers (from the missing thumbnail) and the files are not coming up on my search. The original files are not in the trash either?
    My questions:
    1. Is there any way to trace the history of my actions and undo my actions or salvage my files?
    2. The images still appear in my iphoto library thumbnails when scrolling down the screen (briefly before turning to grey !'s). Can I somehow salvage the image from the thumbnails?
    3. Do I have to find the original files to see the photos again?
I have learned to not mess with orignial files in iphoto, never delete when importng, and always have mucho diskspace when uploading.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Will and Julia in Kauai

As I was importing our 200 photos from the hike, my computer warned me that I was running out of disk space and stopped before finishing the load.
You should always have a minimum of 10 GB of free space on your boot hard drive for safe and proper operation of your computer. you must get at least that much free space to go forward
I regretfully opted to delete the photos from the camera as it imported (bummer).
It is recommended that you never have iPhoto delete your photos - wait until they are imported and tested (I wait for a backup cycle or two myself) and then use the camera to format the memory card - this will save you from many problems and reformats you card with every use which eliminates other issues

How did you do this? using iPhoto or using the finder?

Again until you have a minimum of 10BG of free space you are risking many additional problems with your total system including iPhoto

    My questions:
    1. Is there any way to trace the history of my actions and undo my actions or salvage my files?
No - but you may be able to recover the photos on your camera card using program like media recover - http://www.mediarecover.com/ - the trial version will tell you what is available for recovery
    2. The images still appear in my iphoto library thumbnails when scrolling down the screen (briefly before turning to grey !'s). Can I somehow salvage the image from the thumbnails?
    no
    3. Do I have to find the original files to see the photos again?
Yes - either on your computer or on your camera media card
I have learned to not mess with orignial files in iphoto,
Yes - that is critical - doing so is likely to lose data and possibly photos
    never delete when importng,
    That is strongly recommended
and always have mucho diskspace when uploading.
    Yes - 10GB minimum

  • Error msg when I compact: The folder 'Inbox' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify you have enough disk space, and have write privileg

I recently had my computer serviced. I re-downloaded Thunderbird (getting a newer version), and retrieved my saved email. Now, Thunderbird keeps asking me to compact, but when I do, I get this error message:
The folder 'Inbox' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.
Obviously, since I'm getting mail all the time, I have write privileges, and disk space. The question is whether there's a setting I need to specify, or whether Thunderbird is writing to a special partition that may have gotten write-protected when my computer was in the hospital - or whether this is related to a known bug.
    All help appreciated.

The only know bug I can see is probably your anti virus is trying to scan the file when the new inbox is created leaving Thunderbird to think the file was not created.
As an experimental / diagnostic process. Restart the machine in safe mode with networking using Microsoft instructions for [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7] then try the compact. If it works I was most likely right. If it does not, another idea must surface.

  • Why do I have so little free disk space and am running slowly?

My iMac is running very slowly, and I was advised to examine the activity monitor to troubleshoot. I am not technically savvy, but I can see that I have very little free disk space, and that Safari seems to be taking up a lot of memory. I'm not a haevy user, so I'm unclear what the problem is. Could someone explain in simple terms what's wrong and how I can fix it? Thanks

    Jerry Kaiser wrote:
My problem seems to be greatest when I have both Safari and Firefox running.
There is a known memory issue with Firefox on OS X (Chrome has it too) first be sure your updated and check your plug-in compatability (both should be done auto-magically when restarting FF)
    https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/
Next time when you have a slowdown occuring, simply close all the open Firefox windows and that should clear the issue up.
What occurs is when one browses for sometime opening tabs, it asks OS X for more memory and then has trouble using what's been freed up by closed tabs. The issue has been occuring less often as updates have been rolling out.
If one has one more more other large programs open this also contributes to the issue.

Hi Rob, Thanks for your input. The temp location is on the C drive with 228 GB free space. My other drives have 123 GB and 204 GB of free space. I can see how the 32 bit set up is perfectly extracted when it stops when coming to the 64 bit set up. I have done the exercise several times and also made new downloads. I am using Norton 360 and Malwarebytes anti-malware but the dowload from Adobe should be trusted.

  • Your system is low on disk space and elements organizer cannot  perform this operation

your system is low on disk space and elements organizer cannot  perform this operation is the error message i keep getting. i have emptied my recycle bin and got rid of some software that i don't use and im still getting the error. Any Suggestions?

As you might be aware, when you apply auto-fix, a new file (of almost equal size) is created on HDD. This issue might arise if you don't have sufficient hard disk space on the drive which contains the source image. Do you have enough storage space available on your HDD?

Do you really mean MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) ?
Even if its GB, the free space may be enough, depending on your files size, especially with videos or raw files.
When you start the backup process, it first shows you the total size of the catalog.

  • Why does my computer freeze when updateing if i have enough disk space and no disk repairs are needed?

I have problems updating my softwarebecause my computer freezes when it restarts to install. I have enough disk space and I checked for disk repairs and everthing is ok. Still can't update and not my cumputer is taking longer to turn on. There is an earth blinking then i get the apple logo blinking before it turns on and this takes close to 5 minutes.

When you say, "disk repairs" are you referiring to permissions or verifying the disk because clearly there's a problem.
Boot from your install disc, run Disk Utilty to "verify" and if necessary repair the startup disk. (Not Verify Disk Permissions).

  • Linux Mint 17, migrated from Win7: Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.

I get this error message (The messages could not be filtered to folder 'Generic Folder' because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.) popping up on many, though not all of my incoming filters. I recently migrated from a Windows 7 installation to a Linux Mint 17 system.

I did give it time to run through everything when I initially migrated, and it frequently will sit open for 3 to 4 hours while I'm working on other projects.
The 'Generic Folder' represents sorting folders in my main mail account in Thunderbird. For example, my mail which is listed to filter into my 'Amazon' folder is sorted there with no problem, while any mail designated to be filtered into my 'Games' folder prompts the above error massage.

    Done. Thank you, Allan.
The sparse image article you sent a link to needs a little updating (or there's some variability in prompts (no password was required) with my OS and/or Disk Utility version), but it worked.
Phew! It would have been much more time consuming to use Time Machine to recover all my photos after repartitioning the drive.

  • How to migrate from my old MacBook Pro to a new one with less disk space and an external hard drive?

I have just bought a new MacBook Pro and an external hard drive.
Yet I have problems migrating data from my old MacBook Pro (more internal disk space with around 500 GB data) to my new one (internal disk space less than 500 GB).
I have connected all 3 devices but it seems the Migration Assistant does not have an option for us to select to migrate to an external hard drive.
Any other way to do it?
    Kindly help me.  Thanks.

For your situation, Target disk mode may be the most efficient method:

  • Firefox thinks I don't have enough disk space, and cancels the download when it's almost finished.

So recently, I was downloading a pretty huge file for a game (4.5 gigabytes), and it was nearly finished, when an error popped up, saying that there wasn't enough disk space for Firefox to download the file. At the time, I had just enough disk space to download the file (yes, I checked and made sure). The download became unresumable, and I was incredibly irked to find I had to download again, as my download speed is not very good at all. I put it in overnight and made a note of where it stopped, and in the morning, when I checked it, it stopped in the EXACT SAME place, which is at about 4.1/4.5 GBs. I've made a lot more room since then, and I'm downloading it for the third time now. If this happens again, how can I solve this? Thanks.
Also, it's a .dat file. I have no idea if that has any bearing on what may cause this, but if anyone knows anything, please let me know.

The file system is a FAT32 Bootcamp Partition, and what baffles me is that I've been able to download and store files that are over 4 GBs before. And while I'm at it, why is it that you say FAT32 file-systems can't store files over 4 GBs? I've never heard of that happening before.
    Many thanks.

  • Disk space and Logic Pro 9

Hi, I have just upgraded from 8 to 9 and I have very little disk space available on my Mac Book. Using Logic Studio 8 some songs were stopping due to lack of resources, so I have also increased the memory from 1gb to 2gb. My problem is that having installed 9 (and even before this) I have very little disk space on the MacBook (8 gb), and I am wondering if this is affecting performance.
I have a USB Drive attached where I store all my songs and backups etc, and I wondered if it was possible to move some of the content that Logic Studio uses from the MacBook hard disk to this USB drive? If so, what are the steps I should follow and how do I ensure that when I start Logic Studio it points to the new locations by default?
Also, on a related note, I noticed that the Logic 8 application is still present. Should I move this to trash?
    Thank you

Yes it will be effecting performance if the disk is maxed out. You should definitely move the ESX24 and loop stuff, here's a good thread on exactly how to do it:
