Hfs: Runtime corruption detected on my external Back up disk
Using Drive Genius 3 on my iMac.
I received an email from this application with Re: Drive Genius: DrivePulse™ Drive Integrity Warning.
The message states:
A potentially critical system error has occurred:
hfs: Runtime corruption detected on FreeAgent GoFlex Drive, fsck will be forced on next mount.
The volume should be repaired as soon as possible.
How can this be done?

What does this mean and how do I fix it? It came up during safe boot which I used because I have the gray screen with apple logo and waiting that won't let me log all the way onto the computer.It means your drive has malfunctioned. Ideally you should replace it. If you prefer to risk continued use, you should erase it and restore from a backup.

Runtime corruption detected on Macintosh HD, fsck will be forced on next mount
I encountered this message when i attempted to follow the Command + S upon bootup because everytime I login, it will go back to the login screen.
Do you have an up to date backup? Your HDD is failing and needs to be replaced.

TS2570 After performing verbose safe boot - runtime corruption detected on HD
Are their any other steps to resolve other than a disk replacement and complete restore ?
Did you boot off the DVD and run Disk Utility/Repair Disk? What steps have you tried? What OS are you running?

Do external hard drives mounted on my Mac get backed up by time machine on a time capsule wireless apple external hard disk? How can I see what folders have been actually backed up in the external wireless disk? any help would be appreciated
They can provided you remove them from the Exclude list. Normally, Time Machine does not automatically backup external drives.

MacBook Pro won't get past gray start screen - RunTime corruption error
Hi, I am a novice when it comes to fixing things, so I will make a Genius Bar appointment, but I thought I would consult this community first in case anyone has experienced this same issue:
I was using my 13 in. MacBook Pro this morning after not using it for a couple weeks. (It was running fine last time.) It started up fine, and the few applications I was using worked OK. Then I got an error saying I needed to update my Java in order to access my work VPN. I didn't think twice about downloading the Java upgrade. Once the Java download was complete, I thought I might need to restart to get the VPN to recognize the update. And that was the last time I was able to see my desktop. I restarted, and the could not get past the gray screen. I did this twice. Then I did a safe boot (showing the status of the progression), and that when I saw this message over and over and over:
hfs: RunTime corruption detected on MacIntosh HD, fsck will be forced on next mount.
hfs: BlockMarkFreeInternal () trying to free unallocated blocks (10865570,8) on volume MacIntosh HD
(I snapped a pic with my phone - that's how I transcribed it.)
This ran for about 20 minutes before I suspected it wasn't actually doing anything, and I forced it to shut down by pressing the power button.
I just tried to start it again (fingers crossed, hoping for a miracle), but no such luck. Does anyone have any ideas? Is all lost? Thank you in advance for any recommendations!
JenniferI should add that I don't know if the Java download is responsible - could just be a coincidence that it was the last thing I did/downloaded before restarting.

MFC CRecordset heap corruption detected at Close()
I recently upgraded my operating system from Windows XP to Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. We are using Visual Studio 2005/2008 Professional Edition and Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production.
When I try to execute this code I am getting the below exceptions.
try {
CDatabase *pDatabase = CDatabaseConnection::getDatabaseConnectionProcessLog();
ORSProcessLog rsProcessLog(pDatabase);
CString strFilter = _T("SELECT PROCESS_ID, MESSAGE FROM OP_PROCESS_LOG");
rsProcessLog.SetRowsetSize(1);
if( !rsProcessLog.Open(CRecordset::dynaset, strFilter, CRecordset::appendOnly) )
return;
if( !rsProcessLog.CanAppend() )
return;
rsProcessLog.AddNew();
rsProcessLog.m_PROCESS_ID = gcsProcessID;
rsProcessLog.m_MESSAGE = csMessageA;
rsProcessLog.Update();
rsProcessLog.Close();
catch ( CDBException* pEx )
bException = true;
pEx->GetErrorMessage(szCause, 255);
catch( CException* pEx )
bException = true;
pEx->GetErrorMessage(szCause, 255);
where rsProcessLog is the CRecordset object using a successfully connected database pointer pDatabase
In 32- bit Debug version I get a message box at rsProcessLog.Close(); with the below text
Debug Error
Program: ......\Test.exe
HEAP CORRUPTION DETECTED: after Normal block (#506) at 0x0087F628. CRT detected that the application wrote to memory after end of heap buffer.
Memory allocated at f:\dd\vctools\vc7libs\ship\atlmfc\src\mfc\dbcore.cpp(2626)
(Please Retry to debug the application)
In 32- bit Release version I get a message box at rsProcessLog.Close(); with the below text
Windows has triggered a breakpoint in Test.exe
This may be due to a corruption of the heap, which indicates a bug in Test.exe or any of the DLLS it has loaded.
This may also be due to the user pressing F12 while Test.exe has focus.
The output window may have more diagnostic information.
The above code was a working code in Windows XP with the rest of the env remaining the same and it continues to run in Windows XP but not in Windows 7. Any help will be greatly appreciated.Greg,
I installed the Patch using OPatch utility. After the installation I am still getting the "HEAP CORRUPTION DETECTED.." error. Please Help.
I am attaching the OPatch log file for your reference.

When I try to play a song from my re-installed iTunes library, I get the error message: "Song xxx could not be played because original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" > "Locate" or "Cancel." When I click on "Locate" I can't figure out how to get the song to play from any of the places that were "located." The path is C:\users\Janet\libraries\music\iTunes
However, iTunes songs chosen from my library will play in iTunes (current version) when I have the external back-up drive plugged in! I recently copied my backed-up iTunes library from my external back-up drive to a new computer.
Most of the songs, but not all, magically appear in Windows Media Player and I can play those just fine.
I can see my iTunes library in the newest version of iTunes, recently downloaded to new computer, but can't play songs without connecting to the external back-up drive - so maybe there is something else on that external drive that needs to be on my C: drive?
I am using an HP Pavillion Notebook, Windows 7, 64-bit. My previous computer was Windows Vista. Before Vista, I had XP.
Back when I had XP, I wanted to purchase some songs to download to my computer. Because iTunes had the ability, I used it to create a massive library of songs, most of which were ripped from my CDs. I don't have an iPod and iTunes worked fine for creating playlists and then burning them to CDs.
Also, I'd like to know if there is a way to get back my playlists.
And another thing - in the older version of iTunes, there was a folder in the lists on the left-hand side of the screen where I could click to see all the songs I had purchased. I'd like to get that ability back if possible.
In hindsight, iTunes was probably not the best choice for me to build my music library in a Windows operating system, but it seemed to be the best choice at the time. I really wish I could convert all the songs to mp3 format.
I have been working with computers since the days of DOS, black and white screens, and no mice. The first computer I bought for my own use at home was a Mac and it had "Flying Toasters" as a screensaver. (I miss that screensaver.) It did not have a tower and I believe they called it a laptop, even though the thing was as big as a suitcase and probably weighed around 30 pounds. However, I am by no means a computer expert. In other words, pretend you're trying to tell your mother how to do what I am asking. =)
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places. I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file. There must be something else that's missing. My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive. If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess. I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={ Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period. I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive. Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me). As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!" -
Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store? When I try it tells me the pruchases have already been downloaded to this computer.
Does your purchased rmusic appears under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If they do and you don't have the cloud symbol against them so as to re-download them, then do you still have the entries for them in your library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them ? If you do then try deleting them from there (iTunes will be seeing them and assuming that you still have them somewhere) and they should then get the cloud symbol for re-downloading in the Purchased link.
If you aren't in a country where music can be re-downloaded then you could try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, -
My partner deleted, by accident my itunes library. I have an iMac 10.6.7, Itunes 10. I use an WD passport as an external back up and retrieved my itunes library but now get the message "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" so itunes is not recognised the exclamation marked songs, how do i get the retrieved files recognised. At times I get fed-up with Apple blocking files being used, although I like the product its restrictions are so silly!
You not only have to retrieve the library file from the backup drive but the actual music files (usually stored within the "iTunes Media" folder) as well.

Well, the pithy answer would be to buy a computer from a vendor who supports free operating systems.
Of course, I own and love my DV4.
What does it mean? Some BIOS implementations use areas of low memory without properly allocating it (letting the operating system know it is in use). Windows just does not use that area of memory, and some vendors do a sloppy job in their software quality; it only has to work with Redmond code, so why fix it?
Linux is forced to implement a bunch of ridiculous hacks to work around low quality hardware and firmware. You found one. The kernel was watching that memory to see if it could be trusted. Something changed that memory when nothing (in the kernel's view) should have touched it. Since it changed, the kernel has taken note that that memory should not be trusted. Kind of analogous to finding a bad block on a disk drive and subsequently ignoring it by adding it to a list of bad blocks.
So, aside from sucking it up because you lost some usable memory, you need do nothing.
EDIT: BTW, it probably means the new kernel is more stable.

We don't know which MBP you have so start by establishing what ports you have on the MBP that you can connect an external drive to. It'll have USB ports, but if they're USB 2.0, a full, bootable backup could take a very long time. If it's USB 3.0, backups can go a lot quicker. The USB external HD's are common and relatively inexpensive. If you have a Thunderbolt port, that's very fast but the externals compatible with it tend to be more expensive.
If it's just USB 2.0 and Firewire, Firewire is faster but is being phased out. USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 3.0 so when you upgrade to a newer MBP, a USB 3.0 external can plug right in.
Also, unless the external must be really portable, look for one that has a separate power source rather than drawing power from the connection to the Mac, since some externals need more power than the Mac is able or willing to supply. -
